Have you ever wondered how you could use grants to fund your private practice? In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Anne Marie Flood, a Grow Your Private Practice student to discuss how she did it and now has a thriving private practice. Some cool things that we discussed in the episode include how as a homeschool parent herself, she's been able to attract home schoolers as clients and how hiring a virtual assistant has been a game changer for her practice. If you've been thinking about starting and growing a private practice and want to hear how Anne Marie did it, this is a must listen episode! After 5 years as a Spanish teacher, including earning a master's in Secondary Education, Anne Marie found her passion in the form of Speech Language Pathology. She returned to pursue a master's degree at the University of Maryland following the birth of her oldest children. Between virtual, school-based, and private practice experience, Anne Marie has worked with children with speech and language impairments, and their families, all across the US.Anne Marie founded Play & Thrive Speech Therapy in January 2022 in the hopes of offering families more flexibility and collaboration. She believes in partnering with families to help early learners improve their speech and language skills through play. She currently lives in Arnold MD with her husband. When not in the clinic, she can be found homeschooling her two older kids or running with the youngest in the stroller. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Anne Marie's journey into speech therapy and private practiceHow to get grants that can help you fund your private practiceThe most under tapped way to get resources for your private practiceThe benefits of offering teletherapy in your businessHow a virtual assistant can take your practice to the next levelWays to get referrals based on the populations you are working withHow Anne Marie tapped into the homeschool populationAnne Marie's latest level up in her private practiceI hope you enjoyed this conversation with Anne Marie as much as I did! "A part of fate is the freedom of man. Forever wells up the impulse of choosing and acting in his soul."- Ralph Waldo EmersonLori Lothian of Lunatic Astrology is my favorite Youtube astrologer! Her voice is a flourishing expression of the natural syncretism of the Information Age.Rising above the deluge of witless love horoscopes, prophecies of doom and tedious scene politics, Lori brings a refreshing style of densely researched but accessible forecasts. Her mind oscillates at a rapid frequency: intertwining the frayed edges of esoteric astrology, like the outer asteroids, with classical traditions. And she makes it all seem so easy breezy, fluttering from far out ideas into arcane techniques with effortless effort. She works tirelessly creating videos. But she's motivated to share her knowledge because she believes:“Astrology can be very useful for preparing the way for difficult circumstances as well as anticipating and leaning into hope for positive circumstances.”Lori's a very predictive astrologer, finely tuned and confident in her ability to help clients prepare and anticipate. Over the years, she's realized that fate does seem to play a significant factor in human life. The age-old question of fate versus freewill brings up so many questions. And this is exactly what Lori and I decided to tackle in this interview. As our conversation unfolds, we discuss:How the freewill taught in the Law of Attraction is solipsisticHow pure fatalism erodes agency and choiceWhy so many astrologers wrongly predicted the 2016 electionHow the 24,000+ asteroids have become a part of Lori's practiceHow personal will relates to Divine WillHow awakened imagination is connected to Divine WillLori's fascinating history as a psychicAnd her training as a high level remote viewer in Project StargateHow to Follow Lunatic Astrology!Subscribe to Lunatic Astrology where you'll find all of Lori's deep dive astrological forecasts.Follow Lunatic Astrology on Facebook and Instagram.Find out more about Lori's work at www.lunaticastrology.comSupport her work on Patreon to get early access to her forecasts + exclusive discounts on classes.Want to learn astrology from Lori Lothian?Fall registration for her 6-week astrology course, Sky Reader is now open!Support the showSupport the show at https://www.patreon.com/aeolianheart

Summer is a great time to rest, recharge, and work on professional development. This is often when we as music educators attend conferences and workshops, participate in training and certification programs, take summer classes at a local university, and catch up on all the reading we intended to do during the year.Reading is one of my favorite ways to continue learning as a music professional. I love books that help me better understand the learning process—the neuroscience and psychology behind how we take in and process new information. If you've been listening for a while, you know I've shared several book and reading-related episodes in the past: I talked about Daniel Pink's book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us back in Ep. 003, I shared insights from Keith Sawyer's book, Zig Zag: The Surprising Path to Greater Creativity in Ep. 009, and I unpacked Carol Dweck's book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success in Ep. 049.I also shared a summer reading list for music teachers in Ep. 031 with a few novels and non-music or teaching books, if you're looking for other suggestions.Today, I'm sharing a curated list of 11 pedagogy-related books for music teachers. Some explore the research on how the brain works, others outline the tenets of effective practicing; some touch on meditation and wellness practices in music teaching and performance, others teach foundational pedagogy principles. Some I've read, and some are on my reading list, but all offer a fresh perspective on the teaching and learning process that I hope will inspire and inform your teaching practice in the year to come. For show notes, click here.Resources Mentioned*Disclosure: I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.Ep. 003 - The Surprising Truth About What Motivates UsEp. 009 - Book review: Zig Zag: The Surprising Path to Greater CreativityEp. 049 - What Every Music Teacher Should Know About Mindsets: Insights from Carol Dweck's BookEp. 031 - A Summer Reading List for Music TeachersThe Musician's Toolbox: Thoughts on Teaching and Learning Music (Diane and Nick Petrella)How We Learn: The Surprising Truth About When, Where, and Why It Happens (Benedict Carey)Ep. 038 - The Secrets of Interleaved PracticeThe Art of Practicing: A Guide to Making Music from the Heart (Madeline Bruser)The Inner Game of Music (Barry Green & W. Ever wished that you could hear directly from people who have gone from being regular SLPs or OTS to successful private practitioners after going through the Start Your Private Practice Program? In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I'm introducing you to three amazing Start Your Private Practice alums. They are Farwa Husain, Teresa Ochoa, and Claudia Davisson, and they all three came from different backgrounds. One was a school-based SLP or OT who couldn't wait to get out. One took time off from the profession to raise her kids and then came back and started a private practice working just three days a week, and another started her private practice small and on the side of her job as a school SLP, but actually retired early and has grown her private practice with school contracts and also contractors. All three of these students had the same fears, doubts, and hesitations that you do, but they decided to go for it and join the Start Your Private Practice program to create a new future for themselves and their familiesIn Today's Episode, We Discuss:The stories of these three studentsHow private practice helps you create changeThe freedom you can get from starting a private practiceHow a private practice can help you take back control of your life and financesThe benefits of having school contractsHow having a private practice can impact the lives of your familyThe hardest part of starting a private practiceThe benefits of having a support system when starting outWhy you don't need to worry about competition in your areaTheir favorite parts of the programI hope you found this episode helpful! I love how these students took a chance on themselves and have found so much success. We don't learn about starting a private practice in grad school, and I am so happy to offer this program so that you can get the help and support you need to start your private practice and take back control of your life and finances! If you're feeling less than confident about yourself as a teacher, listen up. On today's podcast, we're going to be talking about two ways to look at your confidence in yourself as a teacher… starting today! These two strategies and perspectives will help teach you how to be confident as a teacher.Everyone needs a confidence boost from time-to-time, whether you're a new teacher or are a veteran teacher, especially when you meet new challenges. It's great when someone else gives you support, but you can't depend on others to keep you feeling confident. You are responsible for developing and nurturing your self-confidence. Having confidence as a teacher can improve your overall effectiveness as well as your wellbeing.Confidence as a Teacher comes down to TWO THINGS:1) Self Confidence: Belief in ourselves and our thoughts. Believing that we're already amazing and acknowledging how far we've come is essential to increasing self confidence. If we believe in where we are going, then feedback and "criticism" will become “learning moments”. They won't be a "bad thing" but rather a gift to help us improve.2) External Confidence in Capability- You can look at your wins to see what skillsets you already have confidence in. When you do this, you can see all the areas that you lack confidence in and begin to do practice and repetition to grow your confidence in those areas that you are lacking confidence. Those are just two tips we dive into on this episode that is full of methods to help you begin owning your wins and growing your confidence. Whether you're new to the classroom or a veteran teacher, you won't want to miss this episode that is sure to help you feel more confident in the classroom.Head over to the show notes: https://www.wifeteachermommy.com/podcast/how-to-be-confident-as-a-teacherIn this episode on how to be confident as a teacher:How to be more confident as a teacherThe benefit of believing in yourself and external confidence in your capabilityWhy owning your wins is essential to self confidenceHow to manage your mind when “sticky moments” come upThe theory of 10,000 hours of practiceHow shifting your mindset to positivity can increase your confidenceA simple and easy way you acknowledge your daily and long term winsResources mentioned:Wife Teacher Mommy ClubEducate and Rejuvenate Summer 2023Wife Teacher Mommy: Mentioned on Podcast Amazon List

Are you feeling like you're being held back in your current position? Private practice may be the answer. In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Jordan Scholl to talk about how starting a private practice has allowed him to show up as his most authentic self and it helped his clients show up authentically as well. Jordan Scholl (he/him) is a speech-language pathologist living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Jordan has spent his career as a speech therapist providing services to the adult population in rehabilitation hospitals, private practice, and research settings throughout Ontario. He is also a course lecturer and course designer for SLP programs in Quebec and Ontario and is a sought-after guest lecturer on topics of clinical anatomy/physiology, voice, and motor speech disorders.Jordan opened his private practice so he could emphasize a holistic, functional, and individualized approach to working with his adult clients. He believes everyone has a right to communicate in a way that is authentic to who they are, and has originated the term “identity-affirming" to refer to a therapeutic perspective that adapts to the needs of each individual client. His primary areas of focus include voice and singing voice, gender-affirming care, and adult stuttering. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Why Jordan decided to pursue private practiceHow he embraces authenticity in his practiceThe population he serves How he works with his clients The power of referrals The difference that having a website makes The rebrand Jordan has in mind for his private practice The creativity that private practice allows you to embrace I hope you enjoyed this interview with Jordan and that he inspired you to create an environment where you and your clients can thrive as well. Joseph Goldstein explores the path to freedom that the Buddha laid out for all of us and talks about the importance of developing and sustaining the quality of ardor in our practice. This podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. Click to receive 10% off your first month with your own licensed professional therapist: betterhelp.com/insighthour“What is ardency? I think we all have some sense of it in our very worldly lives. Just think of the feeling of ardor in the great love of your life, or in the first days of the great love of your life. What is that feeling of ardor like? There's this powerful and sustained energy that is just so full in us. And it's characterized by tremendous warmth of feeling and passion and enthusiasm and interest. That's what ardor means. So can we cultivate that kind of ardor in our love of the Dhamma? In our love of the truth? That's the quality that the Buddha is saying we need that, we need that passionate interest, that passionate energy to explore and discover.” – Joseph GoldsteinIn this episode, Joseph talks about:The path to freedom that lies in Vipassana practices and how these practices are rooted in the Buddha's discourse, the Satipatṭhāna SuttaThe deeper meaning of some of the Pali words used in that discourse and why the Buddha frequently repeats some phrasesThe importance of developing and sustaining the quality of ardor in our practiceHow reflecting on the preciousness of human birth and understanding impermanence can help cultivate ardorHow Metta practice works together with Vipassana practiceHow we begin to see that practice is not just for ourselves, but for the benefit of the whole worldThis dharma talk from September 27, 2004, was originally published on Dharma Seed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
