Is it possible to lose a lot of weight without cardio, low carb, or cutting out food groups for non-medical reasons? We've been programmed to believe that weight loss demands a total overhaul of how you eat, loads of cardio and lifting weights. None of that is true. Weight loss success is relative. What works for someone with 20 pounds to lose isn't always going to work for somebody with 200 pounds to lose. In today's episode, I'll discuss the power of meeting yourself where you are, and how to be successful with sustainable weight loss. I'll also address why forcing people to change behaviors they're not ready to change and telling them that there's only one right way to lose weight only makes things worse. Have you ever thought the GAPS protocol might be for you? Are you considering trying it, or you've just heard about it and wonder how it fits into a healing journey? Are you struggling to bring grains into your diet without digestive issues, or wondering what you can do to replenish a gut system damaged by antibiotics? This is the episode for you. We've had conversations with so many of you about GAPS, the Gut and Psychology Syndrome diet created by Dr Natasha Campbell McBride, so it is time to share Alison's story.Alison, along with her husband, Rob, and their then almost 2-year-old son, followed the GAPS protocol for over 2 years. Walk into any pet store and you'll be faced with aisles of options for feeding your pet. In fact, according to IBISWorld, there are currently 899 pet food production businesses in the US alone right now! It's no wonder pet parents struggle to figure out the right foods to feed to their pets. Add to that the confusion brought about by news-media headlines and social-media hype demonizing certain ingredients while touting others as the key to eternal life for your pet, and it can be downright daunting to just figure out what to put in your pet's bowl. In this episode, host Amy Castro interviews Dr. Jeff Grognet, a holistic veterinarian who shares insight into some of the biggest nutrition challenges facing our pets today and what pet parents can do to make good food choices for their pets. They discuss:How nutrition can adversely affect your pet's healthWhy so many cats and dogs are fat, and what pet parents can do about itHow to find and eliminate the not-so-hidden and unnecessary carbs in your pet's dietHow feeding an "ancestral diet" or one that is as close as possible, is key to pet healthHow to address common health problems such as bladder stones Dilated Cardiomyopathy in dogs and how misinformation about its connections to grain-free foods still persistWhy pet parents really need to educate themselves on pet nutritionAnd more!Dr. Jeff Grognet is a veterinarian based in British Columbia, Canada. He focuses on helping animals live better lives using holistic methods. His focus is nutrition and avoiding chemicals of all types. He has several courses available for pet parents as well as holding educational conferences. Wisdom for Wellbeing with Dr. Kaitlin Harkess (PhD Psychology)
The Momentum Series replays our top episodes so that you have the chance to catch episodes you missed, and refresh on others. The idea is to support you more regularly as you take charge of 2023 (through whatever challenges may arise). Here's to health, wealth and wisdom on this heartfelt path of yours. On this episode I interview Dr. John Arden, a brilliant author and leader in the field of integrative psychotherapy. This episode is particularly special for me, as I have been following Dr. Arden's work for many years, since I first read Rewire Your Brain Think Your Way to a Better Life. As you will see in the episode, Dr. Arden is able to take complex concepts from psychotherapy, neuropsychology, epigenetics, psychoneuroimmunology, and nutritional neuroscience and present them in an easily accessible manner. This means that you will have the knowledge to implement these evidence-based practices to cultivate more calmness and connection in your life. What is covered in this episode: >> The SEEDS approach to good health: Social, Exercise, Education, Diet, and Sleep >> Social: Early experiences, such as your attachment, can impact brain development and your epigenome, and how later life experiences, including therapy can also have an epigenetic effect. >> Exercise: This is the “most powerful” of all the components. Dr. Arden describes how he has implemented a cardiovascular boost “minimal dose” by structuring his environment, and how exercise supports you to get energy (even if you're tired!) and is the best antidepressant and anxiolytic! (That means, it decreases symptoms of depression and anxiety.) >> Education: Why learning new things is important for brain health and how it supports your adaptivity (i.e., mental flexibility). >> Diet: How what you eat affects your neurochemistry, and what the best diets are to support your mental health and gut bacteria. Dr. Arden also shares that there is more DNA in your gut that is not you, than is in your cells! He also shares concerns around the most consumed vegetable in the USA. >> Sleep: What makes for quality sleep, and how this impacts different components of your health. >> The FEED approach to learning: Focus, Effort, Effortlessness (stay on behaviour long enough to make it effortless), and Determination Links Discussed Dr. John Arden's webpage and books Head to www.drkaitin.com/ww2 for show notes, free resources and courses that support you a heartfelt life alongside peak performance. What is the best fertility diet? Is it keto, paleo, gluten free? You might be wondering what on earth it has to do with fertility - Think free radical damage, bad eggs, poor circulation, malnutrition and a generally hostile reproductive environment. In today's world, we've been able to pinpoint more and more how and why certain foods affect gut health and fertility. Lectins are sticky proteins that bind to glucose molecules, and when ingested too much, can have negative impacts. In fact, one of the reasons why the keto diet is so popular these days is because lectins are highly responsible for a lot of inflammatory responses. If you find yourself frequently bloated, you are likely reacting to lectins daily.Found in a variety of food families (and GMO crops), lectins can bind to the intestinal lining and cause inflammation, leaky gut, and chronic autoimmune disorders. This can lead to irregular periods, poor egg quality, and inflammatory conditions that can potentially thwart your fertility efforts. But there's a catch - foods that are high in lectin are often foods that are traditionally highly healthy in many other ways - nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, certain vegetables and fruits. You may now be wondering if you need to avoid them altogether. The answer is a bit more complicated than you might think. Moderation is important, but so is preparation.Tune into this session to get the scoop on why certain “healthy” foods would cause inflammation and what to do about it. We'll explore exactly what lectins are, how they can affect the body and fertility, and what food sources they are commonly found in. Most importantly I'll give you the scoop on how to consume them and make sure not to be flaring an immune response that could hinder your fertility. You'll Learn:What lectins are and where they're foundThe effects of lectins on health, and fertilityThe cons of completely 100% eliminating lectins from your dietHow to adjust consumption and preparation of lectin-heavy foodsNeed more guidance? Have you ever been frustrated that a medical diagnosis didn't do anything to fix the problem? Reed Davis talks about how this frustration led him to learning more about how to see and improve the health of the whole person through holistic lifestyle medicine. In this episode you will learn: The difference between functional medicine and diagnostic medicine. The constellation markers that functional medicine uses to connect the dots of your health. The most recognizable patterns that are measurable for improvement. The factors within your own control to change and create a healthy lifestyle. How to preserve and maintain your health. Unique Constellations Reed's dad taught him the benefits of “early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise.” He has seen how the most effective advertising is the healthy person you helped. “We have a credibility problem in our medical institutions,” says Reed. There are external forces that created the compartmentalization of diagnosis into tiny boxes of specializations that only took 2 dots of information to encompass everyone within broad, “normal” parameters. The holistic approach is to look at the whole person, look at the whole constellation for each unique individual in order to step away from a reductionist mindset and into a program that doesn't only see one fix for one problem of one part of their lives. “You don't deserve to be pigeon-holed.” Healing Opportunities Voltaire said, “The art of medicine is distracting the patient long enough for the body to heal itself.” Functional Diagnostics is about identifying healing opportunities so the individual can lift themselves out of the problem with support. You can't get through your metabolic chaos alone, and you shouldn't feel like you have to. Some acronym tools that help Reed in his work include: H.I.D.D.E.N. (Hormone, Immune system, Digestion, Detoxification, Energy production, and Nervous system) and D.R.E.S.S. (Diet, Rest, Exercise Stress-reduction, and Supplementation). These tools help you to look at your life through a high resolution lens, and identify the factors that reduce or heighten your longevity potential.”You have to have a program that has an effect on every cell, tissue, and organ in the person.” This is the purpose of a holistic program. As we know, “you can't empty a bathtub with the water still running.” Reed and Wade will talk you through the process of zooming out in order to see the whole, holistic health potential of a person, with some humor along the way. How do we help boys develop positive body image? In this episode I interview Dr Charlotte Markey, a leading body image expert for close to three decades. While body image concerns have traditionally been considered a female-centric issue, recent research suggests that 75% of adolescent boys are dissatisfied with their bodies. Now more than ever, boys are facing the same competing pressures: to look a certain way, to wear the right clothes and shoes, to be strong and muscular, and on the mental health side, to hide their feelings and worries from others. That's why the author of The Body Image Book for Girls tackles the subject for boys in a new book, Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys, which Cambridge University Press will publish on April 7, 2022, and I urge you to schedule an interview. Charlotte Markey, Ph.D., is one of the world's leading experts in body image research, having studied all things body image, eating behavior, and weight management for close to three decades. A professor of psychology and founding director of the Health Sciences Center at Rutgers University, she is passionate about helping people develop a positive perception of their bodies. The author of The Body Image Book for Girls: Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearless, Dr. Markey will release her latest book, BEING YOU: The Body Image Book for Boys, from Cambridge University Press in April 2022. Her previous publications include Smart People Don't Diet: How the Latest Science Can Help You Lose Weight Permanently, which Scientific American praised as “possibly the best book about weight loss ever written,” and Body Positive: Understanding and Improving Body Image in Science and Practice, co-edited with Drs. Elizabeth Daniels and Meghan Gillen. Are you looking to adopt more plants into your diet, build your personal brand, or maybe make a York Times best-selling cookbook? Team, today's episode is special. I had the pleasure of having Carleigh Bodrug, the creator of PlantYou, on the show today! Carleigh is truly a baller. After growing up on a meat and dairy diet, her father developed cancer. Shortly after, dairy and red meat became labeled as Group 1 and Group 2 Carcinogens. The very food her family was told to be eating day-in and day-out, almost took everything from them. Carleigh decided it was time to dive headfirst into plant-based cooking. While working at a hospital during the day, she began posting food pictures and recipes to a blog called PlantYou. After relentless hours of work, Carleigh built up her income from PlantYou to the point where her work with food was providing an equitable income to her hospital pay. Carleigh quit working at the hospital and never looked back. Since then, she has amassed over three million followers on social media and is now a New York Times Best-selling author for her new cookbook PlantYou.In today's episode we specifically dive into:How to make plant-based food deliciousHow to successfully become plant-basedHow you can build lean muscle on a plant-based dietHow you can get enough protein on a plant-based diet to achieve your fitness and health goalsHow plant-based diets improve your gut health Why a plant-based diet is better for the environmentThe plant-based food industry growthHow to write a cookbookHow to build your personal brandYou can connect with Carleigh at the following links:Order PlantYouFollow PlantYou on InstagramFollow PlantYou on TikTokSubscribe to PlantYou on YouTubeCheckout PlantYou's website
It's common for people to have cheat meals — cheat meals feel like a much-needed break from one's restrictive diet. There is nothing wrong with having cheat meals, but there is something wrong with feeling guilty and shame after having them.In today's episode, Nikki shares her opinion about having cheat meals, how the concept of a cheat meal will affect your relationship with food, and what you can do to create the results with your body that you desire. In this podcast episode, Nikki shares:Having a healthy mindset about having cheat mealsThe biggest game-changer when it comes to eating healthyNikki's transition from craving certain foods to having no desire for themHow to overcome the all or nothing mentality and stop self-sabotagingStrategies that help you enjoy "cheat meals" without ruining your dietHow changing your perspective and dialogue around food can improve your relationship with it forever.Memorable Quotes:"There is a purpose behind certain foods. The biggest difference is your mindset around it, your narrative around it, and your purpose behind it.""If you really want to be successful, when it comes to your nutrition and your health and certain goals, you need to work on your mindset. You need to stop associating certain foods as good foods or bad foods. Because that can change the goals you have, that can change in the season you're in, that can change with your priorities.""You don't need to cheat on a diet or a way of eating when it's actually a part of our everyday lifestyle. You're not a cheater for having certain foods if it's part of your everyday lifestyle."Links Mentioned:To join our FREE Facebook community, go here:https://www.facebook.com/groups/NIXINCommunityTo learn more about our coaching programs, DM me "Health First" on IG:https://www.instagram.com/nikkikorekApply to work with NIXIN Nutrition: www.nikkikorek.comNikki's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nikkikorek/Nikki's Website - https://www.nikkikorek.com/ Hosted on Acast. This week on The Health Made Simple Show, Dr. Bart Precourt discusses masks, the current global pandemic, and more. Learn about the immune system alliance and the superhuman strategies to help gear up our bodies so theyre ready for whatever comes towards us. Read below to discover 5 ways to protect your immune system and keep an eye out for our 20% off special on our immune system packages. 1. Let's Talk About Face Masks Do they work? How do they help? Think of it like this…if I throw a bucket of water at your face and you have a mask on, you're going to be a little drier than if you didn't have a mask on. Is there protection from these masks, yes absolutely! Does it protect you from everything–no. Let me challenge you in this, at my office when a client comes in with a mask on I put mine on as well. For me it is about respecting that person. I encourage you to take both opposing sides of the argument and simply land in the middle with respecting others choices. 2. Fear of the Unknown The reason that we have been put in this uncomfortable place is fear of the unknown. It all started with a super high proposed mortality rate. We're not afraid of getting a cough or a fever, we're afraid of dying. So when those proposed mortality rates were released, the fear began to set in. The reason we started social distancing and the reason masks and gloves were implemented was not to stop the virus entirely, but rather to flatten the curve and extended the period of time that people were going to get this virus and in turn, decrease fatalities from the virus. 3. SuperHuman Strategies If we prepare ourselves to be super human with superhuman strategies, we start to think in ways of building our bodies up so they're ready for whatever comes towards us. Thats the strategy moving forward. 4. Immune System Alliance The microbiome in your gut is a big part of your immune system. Let's call it the “immune Alliance.” Did you know theres actually not a “immune system?” Theres an endocrine system that is made up of glands like your adrenal glands, thyroid etc. Theres other systems that are definable, but the immune system is made up of an alliance. The better that your bodies systems work together, the more protected you are from viruses Did you know your bones are part of your immune system? Your long bones is what houses your bone marrow where we make red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout your body. This is critical. We are dealing with a virus that has an oxygen issue on a cellular level. So if we do not have strong red blood cells we wont be able to defend ourselves from a virus that deprives the host from oxygen. The alliance also includes your thymus gland, which is what creates T-Cells and produces white blood cells. Also your lungs which holds oxygen in your body and even your spleen. Did you know that your spleen is where antibodies are made in your body? Your hands are a big part of this system as well. Ever since we were kids we touch things and we get sick. The microbiome instantly neutralizes these viruses or bacterias and then started the process with the white blood cells to create antibodies, helping to keep us healthy. Using hand sanitizer can actually start to kill off our natural bacteria in our hands. This makes us often MORE susceptible to viruses. 5. 5 Ways to Protect Your Immune System 1. Sleep We heal when we sleep. Your T-Cells and natural killer cells go hunting at night to kill harmful viruses in your body. This is why sleep is so important. 2. Diet How your diet affects your immune alliance. Sugar causes the most oxidative stressors, while alcohol can put your immune system. 3. Movement Even a 30 minute walk can boost your immune system. Movement helps produce red blood cells, and helps you fight off viruses. Movement is not exercise. That is something humans made up because we don't move enough. This should be a natural thing just get up and go and get your body moving. 4. Supplements We've always heard vitamin c is good for the immune alliance. Asorcbic acid is what you'll find at the local grocery store but it is not giving you the full spectrum of the Vitamin C complex. You need a full spectrum of Vitamin P and Vitamin J that all work together to help fight viruses and bacteria. There are always good quality and bad quality supplements, look for reputable brands that include full complex's like I spoke of above. Vitamin D is another great supplement as well as Zinc. By taking supplements we are trying to give our body the tools to do what it's made to do. Heres a link to some immune packages I put together for you: https://drbart.clickfunnels.com/sales-pageomv2u0tp 5. Mindest Who do you need to be to move forward? You don't need to be the one trying to rip someone on facebook. We need to be getting back to our roots and smiling and loving people and helping each other through this pandemic. -- Register for the Health Made Simple Show If you are interested in registering for the Health Made Simple Show please visit http://www.healthmadesimple.com

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed the Christmas break, in whatever shape yours took this year. Hopefully there was plenty of resting and you’re feeling ready to support yourself - in mind and body - through what looks set to be a few more challenging months*. We thought we’d kick off the year talking about food and, specifically, why in 2021 it might be worth ripping up the healthy eating rulebook. That’s according to Professor Tim Spector OBE, a genetic epidemiologist at King’s College London, co-founder of personalised nutrition app ZOE and author of Spoon Fed: Why Everything We’ve Been Told about Food is Wrong. As that book title would suggest, Professor Spector has a reputation for being one of the most formidable myth busters in the world of nutritional science and he certainly lives up to his rep in today’s conversation. He argues against placing too much emphasis on counting calories and he’s not a fan of counting macros either: he thinks both are a bit boring, reductive and unlikely to help you achieve your health goals in any meaningful or lasting way. Professor Spector believes letting go of tired dietary rules, replacing them with a few core principles, and then - on the specifics - working out what works for your body should be your new M.O. Eat for yourself, he argues, and you'll experience fewer energy crashes and be able to reach a healthy, sustainable weight (if that's a goal for you this year) without excess restriction, calorie cutting or unnecessary misery. While Professor Tim's reasoning and evidence may be highly scientific, his solutions are pretty simple: in essence ‘don’t count your foods, change your mindset’. Sounds good, right? Imagine playing basketball in front of 70,000 people and millions on TV. Today's guest, Zak Showalter, did just that for the University of Wisconsin. His career took him to 2 different Final Fours and four Sweet 16's and now he's tackling Ironman. He's graduated, stepped away from basketball, and turned his sights on Ironman Wisconsin. Our goal for this podcast was to see how many lessons learned from Zak's days at Wisconsin under Hall of Fame coach Bo Ryan translate into triathlon. As it turned out, a lot of them do. We start with some of Zak’s endurance background and early training challenges. Then go into how what he learned on the basketball floor can be translated into Ironman training: Were you ever into endurance sports before? What it's like hanging out with Packer's QB Aaron Rodgers What it was like to work with Michael Jordan’s strength coach When he decided he wanted to do an Ironman How he deals with Winter training in Wisconsin What's it like going from a high exposure team sport to an isolated training world? A coach’s message “Play hard, play smart, play together, and have fun.” Race like you train - Zak tells us how what he learned from the daily grind of college basketball practice and how he thinks it can be applied to triathlon training and best set him up for the race. Ups and Downs - How to stay level headed and on the same path when faced with setbacks of a big loss or the the high of a big win. Patience - Wisconsin basketball is built on patience, both in execution and sytem. Zak gives us a perspective on how they looked at a long season or career and how the philosophies can apply to Ironman training. Emotions- He takes us in the locker room before Wisconsin faced off with a 38-0 Kentucky team at the Final Four. How is it possible to stay calm when you’re running out in front of 70,000 people to play a game watched by millions? He gives us a very simple solution. Diet: How did you guys eat? Was there a big focus on nutrition or were you just kids? Has that changed as you train for Ironman? Here are a couple videos of Zak in his playing days: - His salute to Aaron Rodgers after hitting a buzzer beater against Florida - High School State Championship Opening Tip Dunk Zak on Instagram: zshowalter3 Zak on Twitter: @ZShowbball333 If you enjoy the Crushing Iron podcast, you can support us with a direct pledge here.
