Hosted by classical guitarist Adam Keeler and electric jazz guitarist Tim Mirth expounding on conversations they've had about guitar over the last 15 years. Both with over 30 years experience playing guitar, gigging, recording, teaching, complaining ;-) "Adam and I have basically had a never ending guitar discussion for the last 15 years we've known each other. Everything from discussing great players, the plight of being lefty, to new gear, recording techniques, guitar techniques etc..." Says co-host Tim. We thought why not share our discussions, it might be interesting to some people. We really get into some heated discussions sometimes about different topics from Modelling vs Real amps to what makes players great, etc... So we're sharing, cause we know the world needs more guitar talk. Seeing the world primarily through different lenses, Adam mostly acoustic, and Tim mostly electric gives a pretty unique perspective on the whole thing.

Episode Notes Adam and Tim bring classical guitar performer, teacher, composer, arranger, hustler....Stephen Aron to the show. We have learned so much from Steve, and continue to. Steve's Bio: Described by the New York Times as “cultivated and musical,” Stephen Aron performs regularly throughout the US, Canada and Europe. An active composer and arranger, his work is published by Tuscany Editions (“wonderful guitaristic arrangement,” American Music Teacher), Mel Bay Publications (“historic,” Guitart) and Clear Note Publications (“a book to be ignored at your peril,” Classical Guitar). Clear Note also recently published several of Mr. Aron's original compositions (“imaginative, adventurous, effortlessly entertaining,” Classical Guitar). He has released thirteen publications, totaling nearly 600 pages of music. Aron's recordings have been described as “stunning” (Guitar Review), “superbly produced” (Soundboard), “warmly recommended” (Fanfare) and “inspired” (Classical Guitar). Notably, most of the works on his nine CD's are either original arrangements, original compositions, or premiere recordings of the works of others. His recordings and publications of thirty Lieder ohne Worte by Felix Mendelssohn and the complete Chopin Mazurkas, both for solo guitar, were industry firsts. Aron's most recent releases, One Fell Swoop and A Musical Congeries are collections of new original works for solo guitar. He is a dedicated chamber music advocate, and maintains a regular duo with his wife, soprano JoNell Aron, and another with flutist Jane Berkner. He plays frequently with mixed chamber ensembles both traditional and new music. Aron has adjudicated numerous national and international competitions and has been a repeat guest, giving performances, lectures and master classes at Guitar Foundation of America Conventions, Stetson Guitar Workshops, Portland Guitar Festivals, Eastman Guitar Festivals, Rantucci Guitar Festivals, Alexandria Guitar Festivals, the National Summer Guitar Workshops, the Eastern Carolina University Guitar Festivals, the Sauble Beach Guitar Festivals and the Appalachian Guitar Festivals as well as at the Yale Guitar Extravaganza, the Ithaca College Winter Guitar Festival, the Eastern Tennessee Guitar Festival, the Montreal Guitar Festival, the New York Guitar Seminar, the Miami International Guitar Festival, the Mediterranean Guitar Festival, the Scotland Classical Guitar Retreat, the TAMU Guitar Symposium and others. Recently, Aron has been a guest at guitar festivals in Iserlohn, Germany and Sorrento, Italy, and has appeared on recital series across Italy as well as in France and Denmark. Aron was Professor of Music at the University of Akron from 1981 until his retirement in 2015; he continues as Teacher of Classical Guitar and founder of the classical guitar studies program at Oberlin, where he joined the faculty in 1992. Episode Notes We first get going on how wearing your emotions on your sleeve can be pretty detrimental to progress, where when it's not too close to you, we find ourselves empowered and successful, but when we're too serious or clouded by ego (like not taking obvious help) we are only hurting ourselves. Then we get into the hardware thing that Paul Reed Smith talks about in a recent guitar writeup. He Discusses how even the hardware makes a huge difference in the sound of the guitar... not just the wood and pickups. He also has a pretty interesting TedTalk on the subject, and the mysterious 21 rules of guitar tone (locked in a box somewhere). Don't think I can beat their bio! But Spherical Agenda joins us to talk about their latest album coming out November 19th.... and we got a sneak preview and it is really astounding. Fans of amazing music need to check it out. Check out their websites, buy their music/gear etc...etc.... https://www.sphericalagenda.com/ https://sphericalagenda.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sphericalagenda/ Here's their bio: SPHERICAL AGENDA is a jazz-rock fusion band consisting of the midwest region's top musicians. Hailing from Cincinnati, OH, their sound not only draws from the cutting edge of today's fusion, but harkens back to the reckless abandon and pure energy of groups like Tony Williams Lifetime, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Return to Forever. Featuring Matt Wiles on bass, Brandon Coleman on guitar, Ben Tweedt on keyboards and Devon Leigh on drums, Spherical Agenda is a powerhouse band whose unique chemistry gives rise to infectious grooves, daring solos, and captivating energy. ARCANE WISDOM, the band's full-length debut album, is an eclectic assortment of compositions featuring diverse musical influences and a sharply-honed skill set. Whether it be their progressive rhythmic explorations or soul-infused grooves, Spherical Agenda consistently pushes the musical envelope while paying homage to their home state's rich heritage of funk and soul. Despite the all-encompassing nature of their style and sound, the band maintains a singular, identifiable voice, proving themselves to be an up-and-coming force to be reckoned with. Despite the band itself being fairly young, the collective is cultivating an ever-growing list of accomplishments. The band's members have credits including: performances with the Snarky Horns, The Drifters, Fareed Haque, Grammy-Nominated Dan Pugach Nonet, and Sam Blakelsee Quintet and Large Ensembles, clinics and masterclasses both nationally and abroad, and recording credits such as the television series DC's Legends of Tomorrow soundtrack and the upcoming “For the Love of King”, a compilation series by the Bootsy Collins Foundation benefiting the restoration of historic King Records.Episode Notes Find out more at https://woodairmetal.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Episode Notes Well this started off well.... After shrinking Adam in the beginning, we talk about the shrinking pockets of musicians because of places like Julliard upping tuition over 15% this past year??? What gives? Also, would you send your musician child to music college? Or would you encourage a different route? (coming from 2 college music majors)... Also, we talk about the number one thing that would help the music industry more than just about anything and that's lowering the age limit to who can go to bars. Not allowing 18 year old college students to go to shows really dampens things. And we're just getting started. Here is the Two Set Video about Julliard where they do way better at explaining things than we do, and probably explains a big part why they're more popular and funny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xhnViy_Yfg https://woodairmetal.pinecast.co/ RSS Feed: https://pinecast.com/feed/woodairmetal https://www.facebook.com/woodairmetal https://www.timmirth.com/ Subscribe like and all that yo. Episode Notes Plans... who needs plans. We quickly go from best laid plans and dive deep into the ideas of analog and digital, this was all inspired by the fact that Tim finally released the Red Side Visible record that's been about 10 years in the making. This includes 4 videos, and availability on streaming services http://hyperurl.co/RedSideVisible2 (this handy link will get to popular services) While discussing this release, it was mentioned how some have asked about getting vinyl, and while this sounds pretty amazing in principle, the costs make it very difficult to do in reality (without losing a lot of money). This all descending into... why even bother with records? Etc... You know the story, now hear us jaunt about it. Oh... and go buy Tim's album ;-) Or at least add it to your playlists and share ;-) We're not pushy or anything. Last weeks episode on "Spectacle Culture" inspired a link being sent about the book "Society of the Spectacle" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Society_of_the_Spectacle from sociologist and guitarist extraordinaire (most importantly) Dr. Mark Worrell. In this episode Mark imparts some serious wisdom on us, and I think we're still processing all the nuggets. I think your head will likely be turned around a few times with the thought process going here, and how we live in a spectacle society... ultimately fascinating stuff. Mark has an impressive resume, with it looks like 7 sociology books? And many journal articles, etc... but also a killer guitarist you should check out. Is it the top 1% and nothing else? Or should that really be more appropriately label the best entertainment? Episode Notes Wow, with a week off, we come back with some heavy opinions and rude interjections (and interjections of interjections). We have a doozy here as we tackle a pretty interesting topic all together which is, how much should a learner question a master? What's a healthy response from both sides? We also discuss just the sort of ambiguous nature that is music notation/theory etc... or as Adam likes to say (and getting to the punchline again, haha) "Theory follows practice". Anyways, we think you'll enjoy this one. Stick around for more. Please Like, Subscribe, Share, etc... Episode Notes Um, what to say about how this one starts, but kind of interesting nonetheless. We do dive into some other topics though, like how valuable it is to learn from records, getting the feel for the musicians, their tendencies, personalities, etc... Episode Notes Because of Tim's recent single release for his long working project (that Adam is certainly sick of hearing a million iterations at this point, ha)... some surprising gatekeepers... It's not that the audience isn't there, it's that even the communities make it difficult to share with likely fans. However, it's all part of the learning process. Episode Notes We were a bit all over the place on this one, but it's all good. We talk about Fender copying Phillip Sayce's guitar... allegedly... we also drift into the the "clone" industry (millions of strat copies out there for instance)... we also drift into what's up with guitars future? Is it dying? Does the fact that you can just stay on your own genre and never listen to anything else a good or bad thing? And we ramble on about Bach and well the music world in general. The music at the beginning came from the CD release party for Paul Stranahan's Insomnia featuring Tim on guitar. The song is "Professor Moriarty" and this is probably the first time it's ever been shared. Some cool moments. Tim talked about the Ox Hybrid Fuzz, for those curious. Episode Notes A recent Dave Grohl quote has been making the rounds on social media about things like American Idol telling people they aren't "good enough" to be a musician. He relates his experience that Nirvana started as a bunch of kids with crappy instruments who didn't know how to play, but one day after just going for it... became the biggest band in the world. Could you imagine someone telling you that you suck national TV? It's a weird thing. However, people seem to often believe that some are just born with magical musical abilities... they don't see all the work that goes into it. We also discuss does your personality dictate what kind of music you like? Here is the survey we discussed: https://www.16personalities.com/articles/music-preferences-by-personality-type Wood Air Metal Guitar Podcast Song playing is by Chromadrive "Candy" - Featuring Tim Mirth on guitar. Episode Notes Adam and Tim catch up after a week off sharing the Brandon Coleman Interview. First they talk about what they're up to now, mentioning the band Leprous, Tim's project -Red Side Visible, and some arrangements Adam is working. Then we get into the main topic, where we discuss how a high quality instrument to start out might actually give a huge advantage and having cheaper instruments might really prevent you from ascending into some of the more "competitive" musician landscapes. In particular in classical guitar, you can be limited by your guitar. And even the fact that HQ instruments need time to get used to (think years) and to really learn the inside and outs. In other words, playing a musical instrument is a lot more than playing the right notes. Just like when you play that sample back of "Chopin" on your 50 dollar toy keyboard, that plays the right notes, but does it really play the music? Then Adam and Tim talk about upgrading your instrument. We are a bit limited on the acoustic front, but from an electric guitar, improving the wiring, changing pickups, pots etc... can make a significant difference in a guitar. Tim recently has been updating a lot of instruments and the differences are very promising. The song playing in the intro is "Lucky 13" from Paul Stranahan's Insomnia, featuring Tim on guitar. Here's a link to the recording (but also available on your favorite streaming services). https://timmirth.bandcamp.com/track/triangular Please Like, Subscribe, Share etc...! It means a lot. Ah, we're making you wait for the continuation of the Brandon interview. But, what do you know, here is one we just recorded last week. We talk a bit more about amplification but in particular for classical guitarists, and perhaps using studio monitors? Will that work? Perhaps. Which leads to discussion about recording your guitar... you are responsible for getting the sound you want, don't expect the sound engineer to nail it down. The main topic of the day... What kind of guitarist to you aim for? Are you the type that is working to mimic any style? Your sort of studio ace, hired gun work? Or do you get hired to sound like yourself? Certainly we all do what we got to do, but plenty of great players very well, but their job is to not be too unique, to play the right part, they're hired to not be instantly noticeable of who they are. Like, we knew it was Edward Van Halen playing on Beat It, he was hired to be himself, not to just be "generic" so to speak. As we discuss, it's not so black and white, but it is an interesting question to ask yourself about your goals as a musician. I suspect there is plenty more we discussed, but you'll have to listen and check it out.Episode Notes Find out more at https://woodairmetal.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Episode Notes Episode 7.... who would have thunk it? We continue our verbal onslaught. This week, we dive right into a Holdsworth quote, paraphrasing, where he mentions the goal for him playing live is to not just regurgitate what he practiced, but to play something he never even tried before. How do you practice for that? We also talk about a hypothesis of Tim's that's surely to get a few people upset, but not intentionally, haha.... Essentially there seems to be 3 primary types of uses of amplification in the guitar world. Type 1: Using amplification solely to make the sound of your guitar louder. You don't want the amplifier to color the tone of your instrument much, if at all, and you're really not working with the amp in any particular way, you just want it to make you louder. Type 2: The amp is just as important as the guitar, your instrument is the guitar and amp, and one without the other might as well be clicking keys on a keyboard. The amp has to be a certain volume/feel... do certain things when you roll the tone and volume knobs around, expressive kind of playing. Type 3: More or you create sounds. It doesn't so much matter what amp, though the amp itself (like a Mesa sound) might be one of the sounds you want. This is the person who crafts sounds to be very specific. It really doesn't matter if its modelling or an amp, as long as the end result sounds a certain way. Everyone, for the most part, is a little bit of each category, but most tend to fall into one camp more than the other. This has a lot to do with what stage volume you need to... and why different players have different takes on the stage situation. We also talk a bit about playing in Pit orchestras and all kinds of other stuff. Some players mentioned worth checking out: Allan Holdsworth, Chris Crocco, Gustavo Assil Brasil, Stephen Aron, Steve Vai (again, haha), Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau... and probably others I'm forgetting (sorry). https://woodairmetal.pinecast.co/ RSS Feed: https://pinecast.com/feed/woodairmetal https://www.facebook.com/woodairmetal https://www.timmirth.com/ ***Track playing is "Impressions" by John Coltrane : solo by Tim Mirth, with a killer Abersold backing track.... Episode Notes Oh joy, the aftermath of a gig that goes unexpected. In today's day an age of streaming and relying on technology... we are vulnerable to chances.... Tube amps, Live Streams, Routers, oh my... soldering, pickups, and things that stop working. Then we dive into all kinds of stuff, in probably the loosest and while Tim tries to derail Adam's attempt to have some kind of plan, ha. Other topics, string action, adjustments, backstory on guitars and all kinds of other stuff. I suppose I should write some more here, but I'm starting to wind down, ha. So you'll just have to listen. Cheers! Please Subscribe! Like and Comment. We know it's a long road growing these things, but every little thing helps. Episode Notes Adam and Tim discuss a strange thing happening in today's day. Tim has a gig and has to get the rust off. So we thought, why not share what that takes? We'll talk about the guitar itself, the project "Night Terrors", certain effects, and how to, one way, do a Wet/Dry rig using an attenuator (without actually using any attenuation, and even why you'd want to do that. Also, just what kind of practice do you need to do for a gig? The prep work, practicing the parts, rehearsing with the other musicians, etc... running stuff before the gig at the gig. Also, just setting up at the gig (presuming you have gear to setup), getting sounds, warming up. I guess we'll see how it goes! https://woodairmetal.pinecast.co/ RSS Feed: https://pinecast.com/feed/woodairmetal https://www.facebook.com/woodairmetal https://www.timmirth.com/ The gig will be at the Bop Stop which has amazing live music most nights of the week. https://www.facebook.com/bopstop https://www.themusicsettlement.org/event-rentals/ The song at the beginning is "Summertime" performed by Tim Mirth. Episode Notes Adam's back this week and we dive right into it, despite some perceived technical issues on Tim's side (thinking it was a ASIO driver thing)... Today we talk about all kinds of stuff, but drive towards the theme of the day which is basically the new landscape of the music scene. Has the function of music changed? As suggested by Eric Johnson on Rick Beato's channel. Meaning... previously, people had music as a primary form of entertainment and relief. They'd spend time with focused listening... introspection, etc.. but perhaps now a days, that is really not the case. Perhaps now, music is more of a filler, in the background of our lives, but too many distractions from other things get in the way. We also dive a bit into Matteus Asato's recent retirement? And the Instagram 60 second culture. Is a 60 second guitar lick music? Is it cool at all to present something as "off the cuff" when you rehearsed and recorded it 78 times and perhaps even mimed the best video with the best audio? Finally, we get into an "Ask Ann" article about how Ann Landers and this kids parents wanted to destroy their kids ambitions and love for guitar and well, how we hate her for it, ha. This and more! Tim was fortune this week to be part of an interview on "Getcha Some Productions" podcast to discuss the recent passing of Chick Corea, so be sure to check that out too. Episode Notes We are out a "normal" new episodes this week, so I thought I'd do a quick video lesson that we can discuss more in the future. This is the first of the "Things I wish I knew about guitar when I first started" series we are starting. Adam and Tim will drop these from time to time, so be sure to check in for quick tips. In this video Tim Mirth talks about the wrist motion of the picking hand, and how it might not quite be what you think it is. In Tim's words, he didn't figure this out till likely 15 years of playing or so, after much experimenting and the help of the 1000th time reading Tuck Andress's article on picking. Where Tuck expresses why George Benson had come up with the most economical and effective picking motion. Tim has altered this slightly, but in this video he shows you what it is, and what is "important" about the motion. There is plenty more to explore, but I think you might get something out of this one. We'll see you next week! Thanks for tuning in! Be sure to subscribe, hit the bell, like, and comment, it helps motivate more of these. We have plenty more in this series and episodes coming in the future. Episode Welcome to episode 3 of WoodAirMetal guitar podcast. Who knew we'd make it this far? But we are having fun with it. It's more or less we have to tell each other to stop the episode more than anything, ha. Today we get into all kinds of stuff, a bit about the guitars we have, both being lefty guitarists (With a shout-out to Southpaw Guitars in Houston, TX), even a bit about True Temperament tuning, which I think we'd both love to try (though it's tough being lefty on that front). We get into what we're working on, Adam shares a bit about his cool new arranging project, and Tim discusses his ongoing 9 year recording project for his band Red Side Visible, which just isn't getting done, but included replacing all the guitar tracking, violas, gongs, more and more. But basically got to the point that he has taken over 100 takes on a solo for the one song because he thinks he can do better. I'm sure we can all relate. We shift into the self promotion topic for a bit, and just the new landscape of guitar promotion. We will need to spend a lot more time on this topic. What are your thoughts on the new paradigm? And especially things like Instagram and 60 second clips? Adam's still listening to a lot of Thraikill and Tim is in Keith Jarrett land. Thanks for tuning in to Episode 3. Be sure to subscribe and like it really helps and motivates to know who might be listening! Episode Notes Thanks for joining us again on the Wood Air Metal (WoodAirMetal) guitar podcast. Adam and Tim had a few topics to discuss about teaching that lead into the topic of Advanced musicianship and even comparing some unlikely characters together. How do you determine if a musician is "advanced" anyways? Is Jeff Beck advanced if he doesn't know weird exotic scales and 12 tone harmony (do we know he doesn't know these things?) or is Steve Vai technically better than Hendrix? We didn't even get into the fact that speed is just one technique... either way, we disagreed on this one How about teaching too? What are good methods to teach? Adam shares his favorite methods for beginner students and an approach that works both in his college classes and private studio. We also talk about some music we are listening to today and instagram/youtubers to check out. Some Guitarists mentioned today: Mattias IA Eklundh, Josh Smith, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Mike Moreno, Thraikill, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Liquid Tension Experiment, Johannes Mueller https://woodairmetal.pinecast.co/ RSS Feed: https://pinecast.com/feed/woodairmetal https://www.facebook.com/woodairmetal This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Episode Notes In today's episode we eventually get into the topic of "music competitions". Are they good? What's good about them? Or not? And the fear....oh the fear. We mention a lot of great guitar players names throughout the episode, be sure to check them out. Among them include classical players like Xavier Jara, Marcin Dylla, Tengyue Zhang, David Russell, Sharon Isbin, the other other John Williams and jazz players such as Pat Metheny, Max Light, John Scofield... plus other players like the great Michael Manring, Pierre Bensusan, Michael Hedges, and some guy named Steve Vai??? (whoever that is) More to come, we hope to do this weekly, we're still figuring out the logistics. We'll get the video to Youtube and the Audio to your favorite Podcast host/players. What will we talk about next week? Let us know what you want to hear! Cheers! Topics Today include: 1.) Introduction 2.) Comments on the current landscape (such as Instagram) 3.) Adam brings up GFA (Guitar Foundation of America) Competition Winners and we start to discuss whether it is good or bad for music/guitar? 4.) As we wrap we get a little bit into one of Tim and Adam's biggest pet peeves, having excuses for not learning the notes on the fretboard. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
