You can watch the video of Mr. Pakhomkin's performance here, beginning at 39:19 in the video stream.Midday host Tom Hall opened the segment with an update on the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's labor-management dispute. Lovers of classical music are certainly aware that the members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra are embroiled in a contentious contract dispute with BSO management. The musicians have been picketing in front of Meyerhoff Symphony Hall for much of the summer, after management canceled the summer season, and locked out the musicians. Midday has been in touch with members of the BSO administration and the players committee. Management will lift the lock-out on Monday. Both sides are meeting at this hour (noon on Friday, September 6) to try to reach an agreement by Monday, when rehearsals for the 2019-20 season are scheduled to begin. The first concert of the season is scheduled to take place at the Meyerhoff on Saturday night, September 14th at 8:00pm. Go to the BSO website for information about the event. The BSO musicians, separate from management, are producing their own concert that afternoon at 4:00pm at the New Shiloh Baptist Church with Music Director Marin Alsop on the podium, and guest artists Brian Stokes Mitchell, Janice Chandler Eteme, and choral singers from the community. You can find details about that concert event at the musicians' website.
Today I’m speaking with French guitar phenomenon Thomas Viloteau who’s approach to the instrument, its repertoire and its technique is reshaping the term ‘classical’ guitar, into something new, alive and forward thinking.Viloteau began studying guitar at the age of 12 and worked with with some the most prolific guitarists and teachers in Europe including Alvaro Pierri, Roland Dyens and Judacael. He won first prize at the GFA convention in 2006 and the Francisco Tarrega Competition in 2012 among others. After completing a doctorate at Eastman, his prestige and talent landed him a position at the Peabody Conservatory where he sits among the great guitarists and teachers, Manuel Barrueco and Julian Gray.Thomas is featured on Tonebase and GSI and is one of many younger guitarists who have embraced the technological advantages of the web and social media. We talk about his journey with guitar including his teachers, the need to take a break, his return to the guitar and school, working and surviving as a musician in this day and age, and a lot more.https://www.tigadorecords.com/https://www.tacticalguitaracademy.com/https://www.tacticalguitarist.com/
Hailed by Classical Guitar Magazine as "one of the bright lights of the younger generation of classical musicians, a player of tremendous skill and sensitivity," Russian-American guitarist, Piotr Pakhomkin has extensively performed and given masterclasses in Europe, Central America, and the U.S. Based in Washington, D.C., he was the only guitarist to be featured at Strathmore, Kennedy Center, and Phillips Collection series in the span of a single concert season in 2014.After finishing his studies with Manuel Barrueco at Peabody, Piotr won First Prize in the 2012 Mexican International Guitar Competition and has taken top prizes at the 2012 Boston GuitarFest International Guitar Competition, Great Lakes Guitar Competition, Montreal International Guitar Competition, and the European International Guitar Competition in Italy. After finishing the prestigious Strathmore Artist-in-Residence program in 2014, he returned to serve as a faculty member and mentor in their Institute for Artistic Development. As the winner of the 2016 Respighi International Soloist Competition, he made his concerto and solo debut at Carnegie Hall in the Chamber Orchestra of New York's "Masterwork Series" in June 2018.Piotr is a great example of next generation guitarists out there working and doing their best to sustain a career as a guitarist, in many capacities. I chatted with Piotr about his career, his unique start with the guitar, his latest album, how he has made his way so far, and so much more.

My guest today is the phenomenal classical guitarist Gohar Vardanyan. I first met Gohar when I performed a split concert with her way back in 2010 in Sacramento. I, and I think everyone else in the room, was just floored by her performance. We’ve kept in touch over the years and I always planned on having her on the show, so I was excited to get to speak with her sooner than I expected.Widely admired for her technique, artistry, and passionate performances Gohar has performed throughout the United States and internationally performing for numerous guitar societies, universities, and arts organizations, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and guitar societies in Seattle, San Francisco, Houston, Miami, and New York City to name a few.She has appeared on National Public Radio in the United States and Radio Nacional in Argentina. Ms. Vardanyan has performed with the Juilliard Opera Center and as a soloist with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Panama National Symphony Orchestra. She has also been a guest artist at International Guitar Festivals in Canada, Panama, Italy, and Mexico. She has been featured on the cover of Classical Guitar Magazine and Guitar International Magazine has described her as “the complete package,” “with musicality and emotional quality . . . that one would expect from someone much older than the young wunderkind. Not only is she able to draw you into her performances with engaging musical interpretations, but she has the technical facility that is required of any concert level guitarist.”Her playing has been described as “passionate,” “evocative,” and “virtuosic.”Gohar is also an avid teacher maintaining a private studio in New York City and frequently teaches master classes and guitar technique workshops during her concert travels. She is an author of four books from Mel Bay Publications with a fifth one of its way. And she has a very extensive list of instructional guitar videos on both her own channel and the Strings by Mail channel. She began studying the guitar in her native Armenia at the age of five under the careful guidance of her father. At the age of eight, she gave her first public performance and also appeared on Armenian National Television. She went on to study with Antigoni Goni at the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School. In 2001, Ms. Vardanyan studied with John Wunsch at the Interlochen Arts Academy. She was awarded the Young Artist’s Certificate from Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Harold Randolph Prize in performance from the Peabody Conservatory.Gohar holds a Master of Music Degree from The Juilliard School where she studied with Sharon Isbin and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory of Music where she studied with Manuel Barrueco. She is also an alumna of the Aspen Music Festival and School. In addition to these accolades, Gohar is sponsored by Strings by Mail and plays on Royal Classics Recital strings.I caught up with Gohar over Skype a couple weeks ago. She was very generous with her time and we were able to cover a lot of topics including how she got started with guitar, studying at prestigious schools, touring, booking and promoting as a first time performer, recording, teaching, and much more.
Dan Krikorian sits down with Manuel Barrueco, who has been called one of the worlds best living classical guitarists. They discuss Manuel's life in music, playing on the most renown stages worldwide, and how he came to love the New York Yankees.
The Beijing Guitar Duo are recognized as one of the worlds leading classical guitar duos. Both Meng Su and Yaming Wang have studied under and collaborated with the legendary Manuel Barrueco. They continue to tour extensively internationally and have released number of CDs the latest one called Bach to Dan Dun. I caught up with the duo on their recent visit to Australia and had a quick chat about their amazing guitar journey. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Meng Su and Yameng Wang.
We're delighted to welcome to Midday's Studio A the internationally acclaimed classical musician, Manuel Barrueco. A few years ago, Fanfare Magazine called the Cuban-born artist the world’s greatest living classical guitarist, and it’s hard to dispute that encomium. Three decades' worth of recordings and performances around the globe are the gold standard for legions of aspiring guitar players; for the past 25 years, he has shared his artistry and musical erudition with many of them at the Peabody Institute here in Baltimore. This weekend, Manuel Barrueco comes to Towson University to open the Baltimore Classical Guitar Society's 30th anniversary season, with a program titled The Spanish Guitar. The performance begins Saturday evening, October 28th at 8 p.m. in Towson’s Kaplan Hall. Manuel will perform pieces by Fernando Sor, Granados, and Falla. (Sorry about the sound quality, some issues with the microphones) Jonathan Palevsky interviews Manuel Barrueco in ref to "China West".
When I'm learning a new piece or searching the repertoire for something new, or maybe I just can't seem to make immediate sense of a score, I like to listen to a variety of interpretations via recordings. Over the years I've developed my “go to” list for recording artists, stellar players like David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Scott Tennant, Pepe Romero, and Adam Holzman. Cornering Holzman for a chat at the GFA symposium a couple of weeks ago, I finally had the chance to ask him about some those phenomenal albums. He is among the first classical guitarists to record on the Naxos label, and has recorded several series of complete works from a range of composers, including two discs of Sor, two discs of Ponce, many of Lauro's Venezuelan Waltzes, and most recently Mertz's Bardenklang. Not to mention that every time I see him live I love his playing too, and I'm often struck by his especially engaging approach to composers of the classical style like Carulli, Giuliani, and Sor, as he somehow transforms works I'm tired of, or unsure about, into music I adore. In this episode you'll hear him discuss his preparations for recording, some excellent practice techniques, his current experience teaching three GFA finalists, in addition to picking some great music from his ample library of recordings for us to listen to, including pieces by Sor, Ponce, and Lauro.
