In light of the news that Everton midfielder Aaron Lennon had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, Mental Health Monday looked at the issues faced by sports stars in the spotlight. Clarke Carlisle, former teammate of Aaron Lennon, tried to commit suicide in 2014 and said that he believes that mental health screening should be compulsory in football from academy level as well as sharing his personal experiences. Rachel Kearney and Jim Johnson discussed this further on the Panel followed by Professor Andy Smith from Edge Hill who has done research into elite athletes and mental health.
Mick Coyle was joined by former PFA Chairman and teammate of Aaron Lennon, Clarke Carlisle, after Lennon was detained under the Mental Health Act. Clarke attempted suicide in 2014 and he told Mick of his personal experiences with mental health, and how he believes that full mental health screening should be compulsory in football.
