"What if your sleep quality shapes not just your day, but your whole health future?" In this first episode, Dr. Olli Tikkanen speaks with sleep expert Jin Wen about the fascinating relationship between sleep, stress, and daily well-being. Jin shares her journey from studying stress to focusing on sleep and explains how sleep isn't just about the number of hours you get—it's about how you feel when you wake up. Drawing on her research, Jin explores the “vicious cycle” of daily stress and poor sleep, showing how one bad night can make it harder to handle stress the next day, trapping people in a cycle of fatigue and anxiety. Jin also explains the power of subjective sleep assessments, emphasizing that how you perceive your sleep can be as important as the objective data from sleep trackers. She breaks down her research methods, including the use of ecological momentary assessments (EMA), which capture real-time data about participants' daily experiences. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding how sleep influences daily functioning and long-term health. --- This podcast episode is sponsored by Fibion Inc. | Better Sleep, Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity Research with Less Hassle --- Collect, store and manage SB and PA data easily and remotely - Discover ground-breaking Fibion SENS. --- SB and PA measurements, analysis, and feedback made easy - Learn more about Fibion Research. --- Learn more about Fibion Sleep and Fibion Circadian Rhythm Solutions. --- Fibion Kids - Activity tracking designed for children. --- Explore our Wearables, Experience sampling method (ESM), Sleep, Heart rate variability (HRV), Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity article collections for insights on related articles. --- Refer to our article "Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Measurements" for an exploration of active and sedentary lifestyle assessment methods. --- Learn about actigraphy in our guide: Exploring Actigraphy in Scientific Research: A Comprehensive Guide. --- Gain foundational ESM insights with "Introduction to Experience Sampling Method (ESM)" for a comprehensive overview. --- Explore accelerometer use in health research with our article "Measuring Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior with Accelerometers ". --- For an introduction to the fundamental aspects of HRV, consider revisiting our Ultimate Guide to Heart Rate Variability. --- Follow the podcast on Twitter https://twitter.com/PA_Researcher Follow host Dr Olli Tikkanen on Twitter https://twitter.com/ollitikkanen Follow Fibion on Twitter https://twitter.com/fibion Check us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@PA_Researcher

Host David Manilow has been eating his way around town via sandwich shops, chicken places and taco joints. He's also gone upscale at the Alston, a new French steakhouse in the Gold Coast. In this episode, Manilow catches up with two of the Alston partners, chef Jenner Tomaska and Scott Weiner of The Fifty/50 Restaurant Group. Hear why this isn't your typical Chicago chophouse. Tomaska, the chef behind the Michelin-starred Esmé, also shares what he has planned next.

Over two years after civil war erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and their former allies-turned rival militia, the RSF, Sudan is now the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with nearly 13 million displaced. Rape used as a weapon of war, together with other sexual violence, has disproportionately shattered the lives of women and girls. Today, gender agency UN Women estimates that 12.1 million people – 25 per cent of the population – is at risk. Just ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, UN News's Emma Trager-Lewis spoke to Esméralda Alabre, who leads the UN reproductive health agency UNFPA's work to counter gender based-violence in Sudan.

What would it feel like for other people to love me if they were to truly see me and truly know me as I am right now?Today we meet Esmé and we're talking about the queer book that saved their life: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. And Martha joins us for the conversation!Esmé has been slinging radical books at Firestorm since 2019. They wear multiple hats including communications, event facilitation, and offsite sales. When she doesn't have her nose in a gay book, Esmé sings in a doom metal band and snuggles with the shop dog, an ancient dachshund named Julius Caesar Salad, as much as caninely possible.Martha Wells has written many novels, including the bestselling and award-winning Murderbot Diaries series, which was adapted into an Apple Original TV series debuting May 16, 2025. She also authored Witch King, City of Bones, The Wizard Hunters, Wheel of the Infinite, and the Nebula-nominated The Death of the Necromancer, as well as YA fantasy novels, short stories, and nonfiction. In All Systems Red, the first book in The Murderbot Diaries, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests on a distant planet, shadowed by their Company-supplied SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module. Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.Special Limited SeriesThis episode is part of a special limited series of episodes featuring only guests who are owners or staff at LGBTQ bookstores.
