For at least a year and a half now, most of us have relegated Covid-19 to the back of our minds. Cases of the virus had drastically reduced, it was not mentioned in headlines any more, and life seemed to have got somewhat back to normal as we learnt to live with Covid. It's difficult however to ignore the news of yet another coronavirus mutation – this latest sub-variant, JN.1, a descendent of the Omicron variant, has been classified by the World Health Organisation as a ‘variant of interest' because it has led to a rapid rise in cases across countries. But the WHO has said that the risk to public health is low, and this has been echoed by the Union Health Ministry in India which has said that JN.1 is not a cause of immediate concern. India has seen a surge in cases over the past few days – as of December 27, a total of 109 cases of JN.1 have been detected in the country. Active Covid-19 cases now stand at over 4,000 and several deaths have been reported over the past few days. With winter having set in across north India, pollution levels on the rise and respiratory infections doing the rounds, do we need to be worried about JN.1? Is this sub-variant more infectious than previous variants? Does it have higher vaccine escape properties? Would a booster shot of the vaccine help? And do we need to mask up again? Tune in to find out.

It was a 2-part question and we asked: Who is Wellens syndrome named after and in what year did he co-author the paper that describes what we now know as Wellens syndrome? The answer was: Cardiologist Dr. Henrich Wellens described, with his co-authors, what we now know as Wellens syndrome in 1982 in the American Heart Journal. The winner this month is Mike Sprosty, PA. Mike actually came to our live Original Emergency Medicine Boot Camp in July! It was great to meet him. Roy L Hales / Cortes Currents - While the number of active COVID cases on Vancouver Island has now reached 504, these are almost all in the South and Central Health Service Delivery Areas. Yesterday Island Health reported 32 active cases in North Vancouver Island. Their are no school closures or outbreaks reported in our area. The most geographically specific data available, week old Local Health Area statistics released by the BC Centre Disease Control on Wednesday April 7th, shows 12 cases in the Comox Valley, 7 in Greater Campbell River, 5 in Vancouver Island West and 1 in Vancouver Island North. Their are no school closures or outbreaks reported in North Vancouver Island. The only mention of COVID on Quadra Island is now almost a month old and, as there have been no updates, could be irrelevant. There are no known reports of active cases on Cortes Island. The only incident to report comes from the Session Taproom & Kitchen in Campbell River. On Wednesday, April 7, they posted the following note to their website: “One of our team members had a COVID exposure this past weekend and has since developed some symptoms. As a precaution, while we await test results, we have decided to close the taproom for today, Wednesday April 7th, and perform a deep clean of our space.” Their staff member tested negative and a subsequent note posted on the restaurant's website states: “We are thrilled to report that we have been given the green-light to resume our growler fill program with any of our rotating BC Craft Beer taps!”
Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents -There was only one active COVID 19 case in the Greater Campbell River Health area as of last Monday, according to the latest report from the BC Center for Disease control. At that point there were only seven cases in the North Vancouver Island Local Health Area. Now there are ten. The only other report from our area pertains to Cortes Island. The Klahoose village's immunization program experienced a weeks delay, but is rolling out despite the province wide shortage of COVID-19 vaccines. Chief Kevin Peacey told the National Observer, “We hear a lot of our members are jumping at the bit to get in line first. It is frustrating with the delay, but I keep positive that it will all work out in the end.” The Klahoose were put at the front of the line of First Nations receiving vaccinations because of their COVID cluster in November/December.

Hi and welcome to Quick look, i am your host -Siddharth In his last ''Mann Ki Baat'' radio broadcast of the year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged people to substitute foreign-made products they use with items produced in India, and said they should make this resolution for the country in the new year. India made progress in the fight against the coronavirus, as the number of active cases fell down to its lowest since July. According to the Union Health Ministry the country has reported a trend of sustained decrease in the number of active cases. On December 27, The nation's active Covid-19 caseload in the country dipped to 2.78 lakh. India's present active caseload consists of just 2.74 per cent of India's total positive cases. The total recovered cases stand at 97,61,538. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/business-line/message
Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Another one of North Vancouver Island's 26 Active COVID cases identified himself over Facebook last week. Lawrence O'Connor is a stock car driver who contracted the disease while participating in a benefit race for Amnesty International in the Arizona Desert. “There's nothing pleasant about this painful illness; I feel like I've been eaten by wolves, and s**t off a cliff,” he wrote. He arranged for friends to drop off groceries at his door, in Port Hardy, and is currently in quarantine. Closer to home, Chief Kevin Peacey posted an update about the situation in the Klahoose village at Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island. “Several people have been tested. They are self isolating. We are waiting for the results. The storm did not help delaying our ability to get the swabs off the island. We should know by Monday whether we have more confirmed cases. We will continued to announce the number of confirmed Covid19 cases as we get the results back. We hope that more “positive” cases are not going to happen but we are getting ourselves prepared. “Officially we have only one confirmed case and the contact tracing is STILL ongoing. This is why it is VERY IMPORTANT for everyone to follow the provincial guidelines and stay home, stay in your household bubble, wash your hands and mask up if you do leave your home. We are doing our due diligence, following the guidelines from various government agencies, as well as advice from our sister nation Tla'amin's Covid19 emergency response team. “We do all live on this island together and I very much appreciate the whole community rising to this occasion and doing your part of shutting down COVID. On another note, I'm getting a lot of people asking how they can actually help, right now bringing a couple armloads of DRY firewood to keep our frontline workers warm at the check point is a fantastic contribution to our efforts here. Once again I raise my hands to you all. Emote.” Island Health has not disclosed the whereabouts of the other 24 active cases in the North Vancouver Island Health Service Delivery Area. The 2016 census lists more than 122,000 people in this 40,225 square kilometre region. There are a great many small islands and rural communities, as well as urban centres like Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Campbell River, Courtenay and Comox.
