In this episode, we explore a new dimension of intelligence for navigating our rapidly-changing world. We start with the story of Hiroo Onoda, a soldier whose unwavering commitment to a mission long after its context had vanished becomes a powerful metaphor for how rigidity can keep us stuck. We dive deep into "AQ"—Agility Quotient—with Liz Tran, founder of AQ Learning Lab and author of AQ: A New Kind of Intelligence for a World That's Always Changing.Liz breaks down why AQ matters now more than ever, as change, disappointment, and uncertainty become the hallmarks of modern life, exceeding the rates of just decades ago. We unpack the origins and limitations of IQ and EQ, and highlight how AQ is the urgent intelligence we all need to cultivate. Liz shares the four archetypes for handling change—Astronaut, Neurosurgeon, Novelist, and Firefighter—each representing different strengths and pitfalls. We discuss practical strategies for creative leaders to grow their AQ, especially those ahead of the curve who struggle to bring others with them. This episode is a must-listen for anyone committed to staying agile, relevant, and creative as the world evolves beneath our feet.Key Learnings:AQ – Agility Quotient: AQ is our capacity to handle change, disappointment, and uncertainty. It's the essential intelligence for today's world, complementing IQ and EQ.Rigidity vs. Agility: Sticking to obsolete missions or skillsets—like Hiroo Onoda—illustrates how lack of agility can prevent us from recalibrating when reality shifts. Agility is a mindset, not just a skill.Four Change Archetypes: We all respond to change as either Astronauts, Neurosurgeons, Novelists, or Firefighters, each with unique strengths and blindspots. Awareness of your archetype can help you adapt more skillfully.Durable vs. Technical Skills: Technical skills lose value quickly; it's our durable, transferrable skills—like communication, problem-solving, and reflection—that build true agility and staying power.Bringing Others Along: Especially for creative “astronauts,” practical tools like “giving turn signals” in communication and learning to value the insights of other archetypes are essential for inspiring and leading change.Get full interviews and bonus content for free! For decades, we were sold a lie: get good grades, be smart, keep climbing—and success will magically follow. But in a world of nonstop disruption, AI, political chaos, and careers that don't come with ladders anymore, IQ and EQ alone aren't cutting it. In this episode of This Is Woman's Work, Nicole Kalil sits down with Liz Tran, executive coach, former venture capitalist, and author of AQ: A New Kind of Intelligence for a World That's Always Changing, to unpack the intelligence that actually determines who thrives when everything keeps shifting: AQ (Agility Quotient). AQ isn't about being perfect, flexible to the point of burnout, or endlessly accommodating. It's about how well you adapt to change, uncertainty, and the unknown—without losing yourself in the process. Liz breaks down the four AQ archetypes (Firefighter, Novelist, Astronaut, Neurosurgeon), how proactive vs. reactive change impacts your life and career, and why adaptability is no longer optional—it's survival. This conversation will change how you think about intelligence, leadership, confidence, and what it really takes to succeed when the rules keep changing mid-game. Bottom line: Intelligence isn't just what you know—it's how you respond when what you know stops working. Thank you to our sponsors! Sex is a skill. Beducated is where you learn it. Have you ever heard someone spouting off on social media that the climate is always changing? Apparently this carries great weight amongst people who don't want to admit that humans are involved in the accurately predicted warming trend that we are currently experiencing. I just recently encountered someone on social media claiming that the climate is self-correcting and we don't need to worry about how much CO2 we emit, it will take care of itself….like the North Atlantic cod fishery, or the dodo bird. In this episode I'm going to review the state of our knowledge of past climates on our planet. This episode draws heavily on the nice summary recently published by Elise Cutts in Science News. The title of today's contemplation “our original face is always changing” comes from the story of the sixth ancestor, Eno, retold in case 23 of The Gateless Barrier collection of koans: “Don't think good, don't think evil. At this very moment, what is the original face of Ming the head monk?” “What is your original face before your parents were born?” In other words, just sit and your original face immediately appears. Finally, we could say our world self is also embedded in the great Cosmos. We could say - We are the Cosmos, experiencing itself in human form.

For many Christians in the American South —especially younger people— churches do not feel welcoming. People who don't look, think, believe, or live as we do are telling us as much. Some who claim the name of Jesus engage in blatant lies, gaslight the hurting, and even physically harm others. Human anatomy is often more important to becoming a leader than good character, empathy, and basic competence are. Many folks confuse “what the Bible says” with their own narrow interpretation of Scripture, boldly claiming “it's always been this way.” But has it always been this way? I began asking this question over a decade ago without even realizing. A series of bad church experiences finally sent me looking for answers. What I've discovered, and am still discovering, is that the answer is no, it has not always been this way. I was recently invited to share about the crises many churches find themselves in with a group of fellow believers in my home city of Memphis, TN. Most are in their twenties and thirties and are —or previously were— deeply engaged at their churches. Some are trying to turn the tide of a fracturing community they love. Others have already left hurt and confused. But they all love Jesus and are searching for something better. And that better something is out there waiting for us to find. Scripture invites us into a deep and rich conversation about how the community of God should and does change, as does 2,000 years of the historic Christian tradition. Both can help us identify the main problem that lurks behind so many of our challenges today. And both offer us a path forward for renewing the Church in our time. Katie Hubbard had lived under the shadow of cancer and cancer treatment so long, it was hard to look ahead with hope. Even so, that's what her God and her garden asked her to do. Sitting under her new pergola (of course), she meditated on the way that spring flowers gave way to mid-summer blooms. She felt challenged to look ahead with hope in the Lord. This was important because she also decided to stop her chemo regimen early. It was taking too much away with too little promise of helping.
When was the last time you saw an email open with 'Dear' or finish with something like 'Yours Sincerely'? It seems younger people are denouncing the traditional ways of communicating, and are opting for less formal language. Is this a sign that the English language is becoming more relaxed? When it comes to making money, flexibility is a key ingredient because things are always changing and fluid. Right now, despite signs of huge distress, rising interest rates, and economic volatility, prices for most Real Estate assets are still priced too high for experienced, disciplined investors to pay. As a result, there's a lot of dry powder in the market, especially with smart intuitions and Private Equity. Many are pivoting from acquisitions to ground up development. Omar Kahn, Managing Partner of Boardwalk Wealth, has diversified from multifamily acquisitions to doing a 1200 unit ground up development is Sioux City, South Dakota. He also opened three franchised healthy food restaurants in Central Florida.

“Your mother can't be with you anymore.”Talking About Bambi with our Guest Todd Alcott, ScreenwriterWhen released in 1942 during WWII, Walt Disney's Bambi struggled to find its audience. It still did well enough for itself, but it wasn't until its subsequent releases over the decades when Disney would bring its classics back to theatres where it really found its audience. Since that time, it's often cited as one of the best animated films out there. Why does this simple film about a young deer learning about life in the forest work so well?Screenwriter and graphic artist Todd Alcott joins us to talk about Bambi, one of his favorites. But as he says, even that didn't happen over night. It took decades and multiple viewings to realize what the story was really about and why it clicked so suddenly. And for a film from 1942, there are elements within that make it feel somewhat subversive. It's a story with little plot about a passive protagonist that doesn't have any clearly established goal, after all. What screenwriting handbook said that was okay? The film is about life, the mistakes we make, and how we try learning from them. It's also a reminder that there's no clear path for life. Just when things make sense, life changes the rules. It's quite a lot to absorb from what seems like a simple little film. But that's why we like it, and are thrilled that Todd brought it for us to talk about on Movies We Like. “When people talk about the death of the channel, the death of distribution, I just sit back and go, ‘Hold my beer – give me a whiteboard and I will explain to you how wrong you are.'” Channelnomics CEO Larry Walsh is our guest today for a wide-ranging discussion on what the channel is and why it matters for B2B companies. He shared how the pandemic exposed both the vitality of the channel and the perils of neglecting it, how the channel serves as a salve to a recession, why talk of a “new normal” may be misleading, and much, much more. Ever feel like some things are just outside your ken? I'm that way with literary magazines. And I've never found the right retreat or residency, or applied for a grant, and I know sometimes it's just that I don't think I belong in that world. But worlds don't usually just reach out and drag you in. That's a fave theme of ours around here—you can't be published unless you write something, etc. If you want to be part of a literary world you have to find it and start looking around for a door. This podcast is ALL about finding doors. And knocking, and however you want to extend the metaphor—and it was great. As I've said before, you can tell a practical podcast by the number of links that end up in there, and there are a ton of useful links below. And let me add to all of it my favorite old school book on a similar topic, Making A Literary Life from Carolyn See. I hope this talk with Patrice inspires you to get OUT THERE.About our guest: Patrice Gopo is an award-winning essayist and the author of books for adults and children. Her essay collection, All the Colors We Will See, was Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection. Her debut picture book, All the Places We Call Home, was inspired by one of the essays in her collection. She's the child of Jamaican immigrants, but she was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska—which gives her a pretty unique perspective on everything from racial identity formation and immigration to weather and life in the great outdoors. She's had essays in a ton of publications, including Catapult, Charlotte Magazine, Creative Nonfiction, and AFAR Magazine, and her essay “That Autumn” received a notable mention in the Best American Essays 2020—which is HUGE. She's also the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Artist Fellowship and a Sustainable Arts Foundation Award—and I'm telling you all these details because literary magazines, grants and residencies are exactly what we're planning to talk about.Links from the PodLiterary MamaRelief: A Journal of Art and FaithPublisher's Weekly Lit Mag DatabaseFunds for Writers databaseClifford Garstang Poets & Writers: Literary MagazinesLit Mag News!Creative NonFiction Classes (Patrice mentioned teacher Lisa Olen Harris) North Carolina Arts CouncilPatricia Gopo's Grant Application TipsPatriceGopo.com Writing ResourcesSt. Nell's Humor Writing ResidencyNational Endowment for the ArtsSustainable Arts Foundation#AmReadingPatrice: Nothing Special, Desiree CooperWhen Stars Are Scattered, Omar Mohamed and Victoria JamiesonThe Anti-Racist Writing Workshop, Felicia Rose ChavezKJ: A Rather Haunted Life (Ruth Franklin's biography of Shirley Jackson) Writers, I've got exciting news from Author Accelerator.
