The title of today's contemplation “our original face is always changing” comes from the story of the sixth ancestor, Eno, retold in case 23 of The Gateless Barrier collection of koans: “Don't think good, don't think evil. At this very moment, what is the original face of Ming the head monk?” “What is your original face before your parents were born?” In other words, just sit and your original face immediately appears. Finally, we could say our world self is also embedded in the great Cosmos. We could say - We are the Cosmos, experiencing itself in human form.

For many Christians in the American South —especially younger people— churches do not feel welcoming. People who don't look, think, believe, or live as we do are telling us as much. Some who claim the name of Jesus engage in blatant lies, gaslight the hurting, and even physically harm others. Human anatomy is often more important to becoming a leader than good character, empathy, and basic competence are. Many folks confuse “what the Bible says” with their own narrow interpretation of Scripture, boldly claiming “it's always been this way.” But has it always been this way? I began asking this question over a decade ago without even realizing. A series of bad church experiences finally sent me looking for answers. What I've discovered, and am still discovering, is that the answer is no, it has not always been this way. I was recently invited to share about the crises many churches find themselves in with a group of fellow believers in my home city of Memphis, TN. Most are in their twenties and thirties and are —or previously were— deeply engaged at their churches. Some are trying to turn the tide of a fracturing community they love. Others have already left hurt and confused. But they all love Jesus and are searching for something better. And that better something is out there waiting for us to find. Scripture invites us into a deep and rich conversation about how the community of God should and does change, as does 2,000 years of the historic Christian tradition. Both can help us identify the main problem that lurks behind so many of our challenges today. And both offer us a path forward for renewing the Church in our time. Katie Hubbard had lived under the shadow of cancer and cancer treatment so long, it was hard to look ahead with hope. Even so, that's what her God and her garden asked her to do. Sitting under her new pergola (of course), she meditated on the way that spring flowers gave way to mid-summer blooms. She felt challenged to look ahead with hope in the Lord. This was important because she also decided to stop her chemo regimen early. It was taking too much away with too little promise of helping.

Right now, despite signs of huge distress, rising interest rates, and economic volatility, prices for most Real Estate assets are still priced too high for experienced, disciplined investors to pay. As a result, there's a lot of dry powder in the market, especially with smart intuitions and Private Equity. Many are pivoting from acquisitions to ground up development. “Your mother can't be with you anymore.”Talking About Bambi with our Guest Todd Alcott, ScreenwriterWhen released in 1942 during WWII, Walt Disney's Bambi struggled to find its audience. It still did well enough for itself, but it wasn't until its subsequent releases over the decades when Disney would bring its classics back to theatres where it really found its audience. Since that time, it's often cited as one of the best animated films out there. Why does this simple film about a young deer learning about life in the forest work so well?Screenwriter and graphic artist Todd Alcott joins us to talk about Bambi, one of his favorites. But as he says, even that didn't happen over night. It took decades and multiple viewings to realize what the story was really about and why it clicked so suddenly. And for a film from 1942, there are elements within that make it feel somewhat subversive. It's a story with little plot about a passive protagonist that doesn't have any clearly established goal, after all. What screenwriting handbook said that was okay? The film is about life, the mistakes we make, and how we try learning from them. It's also a reminder that there's no clear path for life. Just when things make sense, life changes the rules. It's quite a lot to absorb from what seems like a simple little film. But that's why we like it, and are thrilled that Todd brought it for us to talk about on Movies We Like. Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel!Film SundriesLearn more about supporting The Next Reel's Movies We Like through your own membership with The Next Reel.Todd's siteTodd on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and IMDbPro or IMDbWatch Bambi on Apple or Amazon, or find other places at JustWatchOriginal 1942 Theatrical trailerPoster artworkLetterboxd(00:00) - Welcome to Movies We Like • Bambi(00:22) - Meet Todd Alcott(12:53) - First Viewings of Bambi(19:06) - Flower(20:01) - Absentee Fathers(20:48) - Beats(22:02) - Gap After Mom Dies(22:26) - Mystery of Life(22:40) - What Does the Protagonist Want?(24:01) - Trying to Figure Life Out(26:18) - Always Changing, Always Learning(28:09) - Males(29:02) - Never Wavers in the Face of Ridicule(30:41) - Life Continues to Be Surprising(32:03) - Childhood in the 40s(33:03) - Fitting It Into the Natural World(34:22) - Characters Moving Through the World(36:07) - Timeless Quality Yet Impossible to Make Now?(42:38) - Capturing the Real World(43:23) - Dogs and Deer(45:27) - Twitterpated(47:19) - Sequels and Remakes(49:33) - Awards(52:05) - Budget and Box Office(53:18) - Liking 'Cute'(54:37) - Having Kids(56:12) - Finding Todd

Slam the Gavel welcomes back Laurie Smith, LMSW to the podcast. Laurie was last one Season 3, Episode 170 and Season 4, Episode 37. W discussed issues that when a person does the right thing it may have a negative affect in their life and the solutions on how to survive it.      There are challenges in life. Can bad things happen to us in the world when we are helping others and doing good? Why is LIFE is NOT FAIR. We discussed the correlation between doing the right thing for the GOOD of others and end up being crucified and that there is a RESURRECTION in the end. Perhaps we have been betrayed by either family or friends but we as people have to do what we think is right for us and do what is right for us.     When all Hell is breaking loose, we have to weigh the costs and the benefits. Again, what is best for us. Whatever the stressful situation is, it does not define our worth. Laurie recommends finding like-minded individuals  who are able to support someone that is going through the same thing. Family or friends may not understand the situation you are going through.     The outside world is ALWAYS CHANGING. Emotional safety internally is VERY important whether the outside world is CHANGING. Laurie gave a really important coping skill on how to breathe to help reduce anxiety.   Not a podcast to be missed with so much information on coping.Linktree - with Course that's 50% off for the holidays ($200 for 6 wks, 12 videos, 200+ page workbook with weekly group coaching/community), webinars, (in Jan I'm starting a Merchandise leg of this company) and my Podcast.  https://linktr.ee/cloudedcompass***This episode of Slam the Gavel is sponsored by CPSprotect Consulting Services. Ever feel like some things are just outside your ken? I'm that way with literary magazines. And I've never found the right retreat or residency, or applied for a grant, and I know sometimes it's just that I don't think I belong in that world. But worlds don't usually just reach out and drag you in. That's a fave theme of ours around here—you can't be published unless you write something, etc. If you want to be part of a literary world you have to find it and start looking around for a door. This podcast is ALL about finding doors. And knocking, and however you want to extend the metaphor—and it was great. As I've said before, you can tell a practical podcast by the number of links that end up in there, and there are a ton of useful links below. And let me add to all of it my favorite old school book on a similar topic, Making A Literary Life from Carolyn See. I hope this talk with Patrice inspires you to get OUT THERE.About our guest: Patrice Gopo is an award-winning essayist and the author of books for adults and children. Her essay collection, All the Colors We Will See, was Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection. Her debut picture book, All the Places We Call Home, was inspired by one of the essays in her collection. She's the child of Jamaican immigrants, but she was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska—which gives her a pretty unique perspective on everything from racial identity formation and immigration to weather and life in the great outdoors. She's had essays in a ton of publications, including Catapult, Charlotte Magazine, Creative Nonfiction, and AFAR Magazine, and her essay “That Autumn” received a notable mention in the Best American Essays 2020—which is HUGE. She's also the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Artist Fellowship and a Sustainable Arts Foundation Award—and I'm telling you all these details because literary magazines, grants and residencies are exactly what we're planning to talk about.Links from the PodLiterary MamaRelief: A Journal of Art and FaithPublisher's Weekly Lit Mag DatabaseFunds for Writers databaseClifford Garstang Poets & Writers: Literary MagazinesLit Mag News!Creative NonFiction Classes (Patrice mentioned teacher Lisa Olen Harris) North Carolina Arts CouncilPatricia Gopo's Grant Application TipsPatriceGopo.com Writing ResourcesSt. Nell's Humor Writing ResidencyNational Endowment for the ArtsSustainable Arts Foundation#AmReadingPatrice: Nothing Special, Desiree CooperWhen Stars Are Scattered, Omar Mohamed and Victoria JamiesonThe Anti-Racist Writing Workshop, Felicia Rose ChavezKJ: A Rather Haunted Life (Ruth Franklin's biography of Shirley Jackson) Writers, I've got exciting news from Author Accelerator. Today's tea is on moving through change and living in impermanence in our world. This is the first part 2 with a previous guest on the House of Lo podcast - Ryane LeCescne. I just love this woman in all her magnificience and magic. Today's conversation is INSANELY powerful and magical and I don't say that lightly. Ryane LeCesne is a Mindset Advancement Coach. Since 2012, Ryane has coached nearly 1,000 high-achieving women – specializing in the unique needs of high-achieving Black women – to advance their professional dreams by overcoming and healing from the self-limiting mindsets of Impostor Syndrome, Perfectionism, and Distractionism.Ryane understands how frustrating it is to have followed the "blueprint to success" only to feel like you secretly lack the 3Cs – clarity, confidence, and courage – to advance your career or build your dream business on your terms. She knows what it feels like to have done "everything right" and still feel stuck and trapped second-guessing yourself and your dreams. She also knows the mindset required to take big, bold action in the face of your fears. Her coaching process is evidence-based, holistic, transformational, and proven to be instrumental in helping high-achieving women professionally advance. When Ryane's not coaching or with her nose in a personal development+leadership+spiritual book, she is the wife of a very loving and supportive super-guy and mommy to a very special love bug. She's a proud member of The Links, Incorporated and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and a graduate of Spelman College and Georgetown University.Visit Ryane's websiteConnect with Ryane on LinkedinFollow her on InstagramFollow House of Lo on Instagram
