Curator Ekow Eshun reframes the Black figure in historic and contemporary art, surveying its presences, absences, and representations in Western/European art history, the African diaspora, and beyond, via The Time is Always Now (2024). In 1956, the American author James Baldwin wrote: ‘There is never time in the future in which we will work out our salvation. The challenge is in the moment, the time is always now.' Heeding Baldwin's urgent call, Ekow Eshun's new exhibition brings together 22 leading contemporary African diasporic artists from the UK and the US, whose practices emphasise the Black figure through mediums such as painting, drawing, and sculpture. These figurative artists and artworks address difficult histories like slavery, colonialism, and racism and, at the same time, speak to contemporary experiences of Blackness from their own personal perspectives. Ekow explains how artists like Kerry James Marshall, Amy Sherald, and Thomas J. Price acknowledge the paradox of race, and the increased cultural visibility and representation of lived experiences. Beyond celebration, though, The Time Is Always Now follow the consequences of these artists' practices, and what is at stake in depicting the Black figure today. We discuss the plurality of perspectives on view, and how fragmented, collage-like works by Nathaniel Mary Quinn, Lorna Simpson, and Titus Kaphar reconsider W.E.B. Du Bois' understanding of ‘double consciousness' (1897) as a burden, to a 21st century vantage point. Ekow shares the real people depicted in Michael Armitage's surrealistic, religious scenes, whilst connecting works with shared motifs from Godfried Donkor's boxers, to Denzil Forrester and Chris Ofili's dancing forms. We talk about how how history is not just in the past, and how we might think more ‘historically from the present'. Plus, we consider the real life relationships in works by Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Jordan Casteel, - and those shared between artists like Henry Taylor and Noah Davis - shifting the gaze from one of looking at, to looking with, Black figures. Starting at the National Portrait Gallery in London, The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure travels to The Box in Plymouth from 28 June to 29 September 2024. It will then tour to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and North Carolina Museum of Art in the US into 2025. Ceri sat down with Ekow Eshun, a creative director, writer, curator, and broadcaster, to discuss his personal journey and creative purpose. Ekow's story of growing up in Ghana and returning to a racially charged Britain in the 1970s is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination. Claudette Johnson talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Johnson, who was born in 1959 in Manchester, UK, and now lives in London, has created some of the most powerful figurative art of recent years. Working primarily in what she has called the “very small, twisted space offered to Black women”, she uses drawing and painting together in works that are bold yet sensitive, imposing in scale and intimate in their handling. She subverts the conventions of portraiture in her dramatic approach to composition and pose and in foregrounding the figure's presence in the viewer's space rather than establishing the context in which they are depicted. As a result, she confronts the historic invisibility, distortion and denial of Black subjects, and particularly Black women, in art. She discusses her discovery of Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon at university and how it has proved both inspirational and problematic. She reflects on the huge importance of Lubaina Himid to her early career and the recent resurgence in her work. She recalls the impact of Toni Morrison's fiction on her subject matter. And she eulogises Paula Rego's approach to pastels, a key element in her work. How many of us have shrunken back from the thought of being a teacher of the word of Jesus Christ? We have been brought up in a sense at the feet of Gamaliel as a post modern class of Christians. Paul the Apostle was educated by him who was a renowned teacher of the law. Yet Paul, though he was a "Pharisee of Pharisees," after he was born again, had to relearn. He had to know how to love. Not by his own love, but from the love that he himself was loved of God. Love is the essence of all workers in Christ. In several places Paul speaks about he and others being called to be "workers together with Christ." Yet, he admonishes them believers in Hebrews 5:12 that he expected them to be teachers by the time that he came back to see them. So what does this really mean? We are all called in some form or fashion to "be workers together with Christ." We also "have not received the grace of God in vain." How can that living water be stopped up if it is really His life in you? If the heavens and earth cannot contain Him, how is He not coming forth from us if He truly does live in us? The love of God is the purest essence and power of teaching, working and being among all people. No one can be a true vessel of Jesus Christ unless it is done by and through the power of His love via the Holy Spirit. Right where you are called, and what you are experiencing in life is the shaping, molding and character building He is doing in you. I love the words of Oswald Chambers below: "Always give the best you have got every time; never think about who you are giving it to, let the other people take it or leave it as they choose. Pour out the best you have, and always be poor. Never reserve anything, never be diplomatic and careful about the treasure God gives. Always NOW is the secret of the Christian life." How beautiful! You will never go wrong in anything you do for the Lord in word, deed and in your daily manner of life. MINDFULNESS – THE ETERNAL NOW I would like to talk about the practice of mindfulness today which is something practised by people of many belief systems. However I am starting with a Scripture that speaks about God’s mindfulness towards us, because that is where mindfulness originally came from . Hebrews 2:6 What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? (This speaks to all of us (mankind) and also Jesus (Son of Man)The root word for mindful in that Scripture is mnaomai (the idea of fixture in the mind - a mental grasp).  So how is Mindfulness to be applied in practice?Mindfulness can be described as the practice of paying attention, with an intention, and in the present moment. People in our Western culture have been engaging in the practice of mindfulness for some years now. It is a discipline that helps people to stop anxious or distracting thoughts from coming into the mind, helping them to appreciate and pay attention to what is central to them in their here and now experiences and in the inner space of what is meaningful in their life. People use mindfulness as a tool for sharpening their focus of attention and efficiency in doing productive things or for engaging in leisure or creative skills, and also as a form of emotional therapy for staying calm in times of stress. It has generally become a psychological discipline that is useful for finding some order in a busy and agitated world. That is well and good and helpful but it does not reach the highest goal of conscious mindfulness that God has prepared for us. Our mindfulness of God does more than just help us to pay attention to the inner space of what is meaningful in our life, it puts us in touch with the source of all meaning in our life, God himself. So we have seen that it was God who invented the practice of mindfulness and we can see that he is focussing his full attention upon us with an intention of seeing us becoming the person we were created to be from eternity, and he has the attention, the intention and the eternal now, his present moment. And he wants us to get to know him and also to know that we are known by him, and can communicate with him at a level of close and intimate relationship – so it is a two way thing -  God starts the process of mindfulness towards us and invites us to respond. And right there begins a divine process of inner wholeness and transformation. (Romans 12:2 -  being transformed by the renewing of the mind). So What becomes transformed? – it is more than just behaviour - it is the consciousness of who we really are in union with God through Jesus. This consciousness is what captures the present moment and It fills the now with it’s fulness and focus. It is not simply hanging around in the background somewhere – It is front and centre in the mind. It becomes the eternal Now of our existence – always active.  God wants us to know that we are known. God wants to help us locate that known self within himself in us – that is our inner source of power and love- the treasure in the earthen vessel. That is the wellspring, the fountain of living water. We can’t find it on our own, we are taken there by the Holy Spirit. John 16:14 he takes of what Jesus has said and of who Jesus is and reveals it to us. He takes us on this journey of mindful focus and intention.The Holy Spirit hears the cry of our heart to the Father which says;I want to know someone who really knows me and can help me find who I really am and who understands how I feel so that I can be who I really should be. That is powerful – and that is why David exclaimed ‘What IS man that you are mindful of him – are you that interested and focussed? Our life (as part of the human race, created to be part of God’s family) is about knowing God and becoming KNOWN! – Known of God; Galatians 4.9. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world(how can you lose that focus and get bound up in the darkness etc of the world) Being really heard is being really knownWhen a person really feels heard they are tremendously grateful. They feel like saying – ‘how wonderful to know that someone is beginning to understand what it is like to be me’ Can you imagine God feeling like this about us? God says; ‘how wonderful to know that someone is beginning to understand what it is like to know me and to be KNOWN by me’  This is how we feel when we understand that God is always being mindful of us and that we are known by him in all things.Can you imagine that God is hearing you and that he understands what it feels like to be you? That is the work of the Holy Spirit who knew what it felt like to be Jesus as a human being just as Holy Spirit knows us as a person in everything that we feel and understand.He hears the outpouring of our own inner conflicts, our self-defeating attitudes, and our harmful or careless relational conduct towards others.We have to know we are being heard without being judged, condemned, rejected or even evaluated for performance. This is because we are serious about knowing God.When we begin to understand this and believe this that we are known like this we are entering into a healing dazzling light where our darkness can be conquered.  Entering into this two way mindfulness with God is our wrestle with God and with ourselves. Just as Jacob wrestled with God who was in the form of an angel, at a time when he was wondering what his life had been all about, and where was it going in the future. Jacob had been cheating and competing all his life, even trying to beat his twin brother out of the womb, and he ended up cheating him out of his patriarchal inheritance, and he had cheated his father in law out of the best of his cattle. But now he was heading for an encounter with his brother Esau who was on his way to meet up with him – and he was very very worried. Jacob engaged in that wrestle with God that God had set up and this wrestle was the time set for Jacob to come to terms with himself and who he was and to come to terms with God – and he said; ‘I won’t let you go until you bless me’, we enter into the same kind of wrestle with the same kind of feelings and with a heart of saying ‘I won’t let you go until you bless me’. I want to know who you know I am.Jacob was given another name by God after that wrestle. It was Israel. It means ‘you have prevailed with God’ – that means he stayed the distance and endured and hung on to God no matter what is cost him. It was an eternal Now moment for Jacob’s destiny. That is the story of inner transformation because in this encounter he actually prevailed against himself in his own inner being. He was touched by God on his thigh and his hip was put out of joint in the wrestle, and from then on he walked with a limp. That was the outward sign of his newfound vulnerability and humility. He was a changed man. He was known of God and he knew himself. The word for mindful  (Mnaomai)in the Scripture comes from the same root word as ‘abiding’ -(meno).Meno - to stay (in a given place, state of expectancy): — abide, continue, to be present, That is what it means to abide in Him. Jesus said to his disciples and to us;John 15:4 Abide in me, and I will abide in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you abide in me.“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who abide in me (are ever being mindful of me), and I in them (ever being mindful of them), will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. So this abiding, or mindfulness, is always a present moment experience. You cannot be present yesterday, or tomorrow – only now – the eternal Now. Mutual mindfulness between God and us is our eternal destiny. Or does God want us to live eternally in a chaotic conflicted life here on earth? It is a creation at war with itself when you see the destructive storms, earthquakes, animals killing each other, and killing people, and people killing people and bacteria and virus destroying populations. This will not be the case in eternity – no more sorrow no more tears no more death. BUT Jesus said that in this world we would have tribulation, pain, suffering, conflict, but he said ‘be of good cheer, let a supernatural joy fill your life in the midst of all these things – I have overcome the world. That is what it means – That is the outworking of our two way mindfulness with God in the here and now – that is salvation – The Bible says we are ‘being saved’ and ‘Now is the day of salvation’ – even though Jesus did the saving two thousand years go – our faith appropriates NOW as a conscious reality.We can arrive at a place of faith where we can say that no matter what important or momentous things are happening I my life, the biggest thing that is REALLY happening is that God is mindful of me! It is difficult to take our attention off ourselves and our struggles and practice our two way mindfulness and abiding with God.There are some things that you will find good to be mindful of at the start of each day.  Remember that God is still the same. He never changes, even if yesterday everything around you changed. His mindfulness means he cannot forget you – your name is written upon the palm of his hand.Remember that his love for you is an everlasting love, and the reason you exist is because he wants to share his love with you today. Remember that he can do all things, and that nothing is impossible for him; who created you, and the Universe, just for you. Remember that he only wants the best for you, and he will surprise you with his goodness. Tell him you will not worry or be anxious today, for there is no need for that – He will make life work out for you if you let him.Remember ALL this only becomes a reality when your mindfulness of faith is operating. Outside of that is the darkness of a shadowy world where chaos and anxiety take over the mind.  we can actually hear God saying this to us, ALWAYS NOW, and we can really listen, and become mindful about how God truly feels about us. When we become willing to make mindfulness of God the centre of our lives we can finally find peace within ourself. There is a peaceful harmony in being a whole person. We also find hidden aspects of self that we have denied to our awareness, and each such discovery of our shadowy self can give us uneasy and anxious moments. But we can come to terms humbly and honestly with these shortcomings knowing we are not rejected but accepted. We live like Jacob had to live with his limp humble but prevailing into a revised and changing picture of self, a challenging, sometimes disturbing, but exciting and never- ending adventure in this present life. Consider these aspects of God’s mindfulness towards us in the Scriptures Hebrews 2:6 What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? Hebrews 13:8 ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.’ Psalm139:17 How precious are your thoughts (rêa – intentions, purposes) towards me, O God! How great is the sum of them! Isaiah 49:16 Behold, I have written  your name on the palms of my hands; Jeremiah 29:11 ‘For I know the thoughts I have towards you, thoughts of good and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.’ Jeremiah 31:3 ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love, therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you to me.’ Luke 18:37 ‘There are things that are impossible for men, but with God nothing is impossible’ Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Exodus 33:14 My presence will go with you and I will give you rest, for you have found grace in my sight and I know you by name. Philippians 4:6 ‘Do not be anxious for anything, but talk to me about what your needs are, with hope and thanksgiving in your heart.’

It’s Always Now or Never.

Vin Cassidy from Section 25 in conversation Section 25 formed in Poulton-le-Fylde near Blackpool, Lancashire, in November 1977. Initially the band was a duo, consisting of brothers Larry Cassidy (bass, vocals) and Vincent Cassidy (drums). In June 1978 they made their live debut with Phil Denton on guitar. Denton was replaced in November by Paul Wiggin. June 1979 saw the Cassidy brothers promote a charity gig in aid of International Year of the Child at Blackpool Imperial Hotel, featuring Section 25 and other local bands as well as Joy Division and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. As a result, Section 25 were invited to play at the Russell Club in Manchester, and joined Factory Records. Their debut 7", "Girls Don't Count", was released in July 1980 on Factory Records, produced by Ian Curtis and Rob Gretton of Joy Division. All Section 25 releases would be released through either Factory Records (until the demise of that label), or sister imprint Factory Benelux. Their debut LP, Always Now, appeared in 1981 and was produced by Martin Hannett at Britannia Row studio. The pochette sleeve was among the most expensive and elaborate in the label's history (designed by Peter Saville) utilising an exclusive 'marble' effect design printed on the inner jacket and a fold-out cover that resembled a match-book similar to the cover used by Cabaret Voltaire for their 2x45 album. The three-piece group played many gigs in Britain and Northern Europe between 1979 and 1981, both as a headline act and with other Factory Records artists, such as Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Blurt, The Durutti Column, Crispy Ambulance and New Order. The group also released a self-produced second album, The Key of Dreams. However the original line-up split in September 1981 shortly after Paul Wiggin declined to fly to a concert in Helsinki supporting New Order, swallowing up most of their fee by travelling overland. With a North American tour already planned, his fear of flying made his departure inevitable. Factory label boss Tony Wilson then tried and failed to recruit then-unknown guitarist Johnny Marr as a replacement. Abandoning much of the existing live set, the Cassidy brothers prepared for an upcoming European tour with backing tapes and an extra percussionist John Grice. Following a warm-up date in London, the group visited Belgium, Holland and Germany in January 1982 in tandem with Factory labelmates Crispy Ambulance. The band then undertook their first North American tour, albeit restricted to the East Coast. 1983 – 2006 (From The Hip to Love & Hate) Joined by percussionist Lee Shallcross, Section 25 gradually evolved with a more electronic-dance direction, a process which culminated in the album From the Hip and remix single "Looking From A Hilltop", both released in 1984 and produced by Bernard Sumner of New Order. This second iteration of the band also featured the Cassidy brothers' sister Angela Flowers (vocals, keyboards) and Larry Cassidy's wife Jenny Ross (vocals, keyboards). The five-piece completed a lengthy second tour of North America in January 1985, where the single "Looking From A Hilltop" achieved a measure of club success. Later in 1985 the single "Crazy Wisdom" emerged on Factory Benelux as a 12", but the group again splintered, leaving husband-and-wife team Larry Cassidy and Jenny Ross to complete a fourth album, Love & Hate, finally released by Factory in 1988. Bad News Week was also released as a 12" single, remixed by Bernard Sumner. Section 25 then fell silent for more than a decade, although their entire back catalogue was reissued on CD on LTM as well as an archive DVD, So Far. There have also been several live and rarity CDs released by the same label. In 2001 the band regrouped and started composing new material. It was originally expected that this would form the basis for a new album, but these plans were derailed when Jenny Ross, after a long fight with cancer, died on 20 November 2004 at age 42. The LTM DVD So Far, an audio-visual history of the band released in January 2005, was dedicated to her memory. 2006 – 2009 (Part-Primitiv to Nature and Degree) Now with Ian Butterworth (formerly of fellow Factory act Tunnelvison) on guitar and Roger Wikeley on bass and keyboards, the Cassidy brothers performed their first live show in nearly two decades at their hometown Poulton-Le-Fylde in May 2006 followed by dates in Blackpool, Paris, Brussels, Leicester, London and Athens. A new studio album by the quartet, Part-Primitiv, was released by LTM in April 2007, together with Communicants, a DVD assembled from live performances in 2006. Larry and Vin Cassidy also featured in the 2006 Factory documentary film Shadowplayers, and a BBC television documentary on the label. The group performed at the Plan K venue in Brussels in December 2007 as part of the Factory Night (Once Again) event, being joined onstage by Peter Hook of New Order for a cover of "Temptation". It was then proposed that Hook and Section 25 play further shows together, performing a mixture of Section 25, Joy Division and New Order songs. Roger Wikeley left Section 25 in 2008 and was replaced by Stephen Stringer. In November this revised line-up played with Peter Hook in Paris, Brussels, Oss in the southern Netherlands and Krefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.[citation needed] Ian Butterworth parted company with the Section 25 at the end of the year. Stephen Stringer moved on to guitar and Section 25's sound engineer and programmer Stuart Hill moved on to bass guitar. Both were no strangers to Larry and Vin, who had helped them record demos in 1983 and 1985. The band released a new album in 2009 called Nature + Degree through LTM Recordings. Several tracks featured vocals by Bethany Cassidy, daughter of Larry and Jenny, who joined the group as co-vocalist and keyboards player. Section 25 appeared at the "Factory Night (And Then Again)" event at Plan K on 12 December 2009, with Beth and Larry sharing vocals. The group also returned to the States for festival dates in Los Angeles and San Francisco. On 27 February 2010, it was announced that founding member, singer, and bass player for the group, Larry Cassidy, had died at the age of 56. 2010 – present (Retrofit to Elektra) Prior to Larry Cassidy's death, the band had completed work on a new album, Retrofit, which was released on 14 September 2010. The album features electro reworkings and updates of previously issued Section 25 tracks, as well as one new song "Über Hymn". The album closes with a new version of Looking From A Hilltop, produced and arranged by Stephen Morris of New Order. Limited copies came with an extra CD of a 16-minute recording of Larry Cassidy reading selected lyrics of Joy Division's Ian Curtis. This was recorded in January 2010 and would be Larry's last visit to a recording studio. The band opted to continue to perform with their current line up. Section 25 played the FAC251 club in Manchester on 20 November 2010, and in 2011 issued their first new release without Larry Cassidy, a download-only EP titled "Invicta" EP, via Hacienda Records. June 2012 saw a deluxe vinyl reissue of From the Hip (Fact 90), issued as a special edition on Factory Records with 'remixed' artwork by Peter Saville, as well as a split coloured-vinyl 12" with Stereograph featuring two dub versions of "Colour Movement Sex and Violence" and "Inner Drive". Saville also provided the cover image and title for their eighth studio album, Dark Light, issued on the Factory Benelux imprint in February 2013. "My Outrage" was also released as a 7" single. Also released during the same period were the 10" single "Invicta Max" (an expansion of the 2011 EP of the same name) and the official remix album "Eigengrau", featuring numerous remixes of earlier Section 25 recordings by Zoviet France, Absolute Body Control, Portion Control and Renaldo and the Loaf among others. In May 2014 the group issued an expanded 30th anniversary CD edition of From the Hip via Factory Benelux, with a bonus disc featuring original demos as well as a BBC radio session from 1984 plus a new recording of "Reflection". Both Bernard Sumner and Jon Savage contributed liner notes. The new version of Reflection (subtitled 'Younger Image') was also issued as a limited edition orange vinyl 7" single to mark Record Store Day in April 2014. On Record Store Day the band performed in Manchester with Factory peers Crispy Ambulance and Minny Pops. A review of the show in The Guardian newspaper described Section 25 as "a revelation" and "the best new/old band in Britain." In April 2015 Section 25 released "Mirror", another limited edition 7" single for Record Store Day, with guest vocals by Simon Topping, formerly of A Certain Ratio. The song dated from 1980 but had never before been recorded in the studio. Both the song and the packaging complemented a new CD edition of Always Now, re-mastered and featuring a bonus disc with their 1981 John Peel radio session as well as a complete live concert from 1980. The packaging replicated the original wraparound cover designed by Peter Saville. In 2016 the group released a new live album, "Alfresco", as a vinyl and CD package to mark Record Store Day in April. That same year the track "Hit" from their 1981 album Always Now was sampled by Kanye West on a new song, "FML", featured on his seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo.[6] In December 2017 the band announced on their Facebook page that they were working on a new album, to be released during the spring 2018. Vincent Cassidy also announced that their original guitarist, Paul Wiggin, will contribute on the new album. June 2018 saw the release of an eleven-track album Elektra, recorded at West Orange Studios during the early part of the same year. The album featured appearances by original guitarist Paul Wiggin and newest family member Michael Cassidy on bass. One of the tracks (FML) is an acoustic cover of the Kanye West track that sampled the band's Hit from their 1981 set Always Now.
