You often hear the terms antique, collectible and vintage used interchangeably. However, they do have different meanings that have to do with the age and value of an item. I begin this episode with a brief and helpful explanation. https://www.antique-hq.com/the-difference-between-antique-vintage-and-collectible-item-127/ We don't swear here on Something You Should Know, so we won't actually say the word that BS stands for. But everyone knows what it means because we hear BS from people all the time. People toss it around in an effort to make themselves look good or maybe try to sell you something. Being able to tell the truth from BS is a helpful skill and one John Petrocelli is going to teach us. He is a professor of psychology at Wake Forest University and author of a book called The Life Saving Science of Detecting BullSh*t (https://amzn.to/3vNOyfl). John is what you would call an expert on BS after you hear what he has to say, you will be much better equipped to detect BS when you hear it. Wouldn't it be great if people could just get along? Today more than ever, it seems people are less forgiving and easily upset by the actions of others. So how can we fix this – at least in our own lives? A good starting point is to listen to my guest Bill Eddy. He is an attorney and mediator and author of the book Calming Upset People With EAR (https://amzn.to/3Ch58qm.) Bill is the kind of person who doesn't get upset. People rarely rattle him or make him mad. Instead, he just tries to resolve whatever the problem is. Listen and he will teach you how. And it's not that hard. There are friends and then there are friends with “refrigerator rights.” Those are real friends. Given that we live in a time when people have fewer friendships and feel more isolated, friends with refrigerator rights are precious and rare. Listen and discover what it means and why these friends are important. Source: Dr. Will Miller author of Refrigerator Rights (https://amzn.to/3Ch0jxh). PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! What's the difference between an antique, a collectible and a vintage item? This episode begins with a brief and helpful explanation. https://www.antique-hq.com/the-difference-between-antique-vintage-and-collectible-item-127/ Since we don't swear on this podcast, we won't use the word that BS stands for - but we all know what it is. As you are aware, a lot of people fling BS around to try to make themselves look good or try to sell you something. So, how do you tell what is true, what is a lie and what is BS? Listen to John Petrocelli a professor of psychology at Wake Forest University and author of a book called The Life Saving Science of Detecting BullSh*t (https://amzn.to/3vNOyfl). John spends a lot of time researching and talking about BS and once you hear what he has to say, you will be a much better BS detector. While we all know friendship is important, people have fewer friends today than in previous generations and many of us live more isolated lives than ever before. According to one psychologist, what we need are friends who have “refrigerator rights.” Listen and find what that means and why it is important. Source: Dr. Will Miller author of Refrigerator Rights (https://amzn.to/3Ch0jxh). It sure seems people are more willing to argue, disagree and get upset with each other today than in the past. Wouldn't it be great if we could all just get along? Perhaps we can. Or at least we could move in that direction, according to Bill Eddy who is an attorney and mediator and author of the book Calming Upset People With EAR (https://amzn.to/3Ch58qm.) Bill is kind of a real-life Ted Lasso, if you watch that TV show. He doesn't get upset, people don't really rattle him or make him upset, he just works toward resolving the problem and getting on with life. I think you will enjoy what he has to say. Nuggets of Wisdom shared for the One Last Thought podcast by Ido Singer ... 5:08 "Seek an employer who encourages professional development and who covers the cost of it. Seek one that permits the pursuit of your own side hustle so that you can develop multiple income streams." 5:44 Authoring books and seeking ways to better market them was the very thing that led me to the voice platform and the creation of Season 2 of the podcast to help others learn how to prepare for voice. 6:23 "When you create a list of your goals, don't just leave it there in a list. Take your goals and work backwards - reverse engineer - figure out what steps you need to take to get to the goal and put those steps in your calendar." 6:42 "Lean in to change." 6:47 "Don't sweat your selection of a major in school or of your first job. It's going to change throughout your lifetime." 7:28 "While you are working - either as an employee or as a consultant or business owner - be preparing for your next job or your next piece of business." 7:41 "Keep a journal." (Two of the books that I have authored and published and stemmed from my journal and ideas that I didn't let slip away because I had written them down.") 8:48 "Always be working with a coach, no matter what phase of life you find yourself. Whether you are an athlete, a business professional, a stay-at-home mom, a CEO of a company, everybody should be working with a coach." 9:10 "Use your voice. Speak your life intentions in to being. Let your brain hear your own voice. Visualize and speak your accomplishments in to being. It is so important for our brains to hear our own voices." 9:33 "Embrace new technology." 9:45 "When you shine your light, you co-create opportunity for others to shine." 9:54 "Stretch yourself by looking to learn things that are outside of your lane." 10:59 "Keep in mind that you have established 95% of your habits by the time you are age 35, so when you are facing change or if there is something that you deliberately want to change about your life - the 5% is pushing against the 95% that already has a routine in place. So know that you'll have to be very deliberate about it. Capture awareness of your thoughts. There are many things that you can study about this that are available for free out on the Internet. But I just want to plant that seed that changing something about your routine is not going to be easy. You will have to have awareness of your thoughts, adjust your mindset and be deliberate. You can do it!" 11:56 "Speak intentions about your future everyday. Visualize where you are going to be in moments of your future. Place yourself in those moments. And speak about them - speak about them out loud - to yourself, to your maker. Don't worry about the details of how you get there, but be intentional about visualizing being there." 12:31 Join me this week. Let's go out, and teach, inspire and connect! Thank you for listening! There is no stopping these Blues, it seems.Leon MacDonald's new-look outfit have won their fourth in a row by beating the Waratahs at Eden Park tonight in a now typically tense victory which would have shredded the nerves of their supporters and coaches alike.Actually, in the end it was more excruciating than tense, the Blues defending a three-point lead with grit and discipline, two words not normally associated with this franchise. The work of the pack in particular during those final moments as they ran relentlessly close to the ruck was superb and it was enough to get MacDonald's men home for what was perhaps their best win of the year given the circumstances.Their latest success takes them to fifth on the table and it was thoroughly deserved against a side packed with Wallabies who suffered the indignity of losing at home to the Sunwolves last weekend.Remarkably, it is the first time the Blues have strung four wins together in the same season since 2011. They won a total of four last season."Some of our play was outstanding but then through our own errors we let them back into the game and they took their opportunities through their strengths – their kicking game and getting [Israel] Folau into the game," MacDonald said afterwards. "It's pretty hard to stop when they get that going."Fullback Folau was a constant threat and his first-half score took him to 60 tries in Super Rugby; a competition record. The previous record holder was one Doug Howlett, a man familiar in these parts. The Waratahs' Kiwi coach Daryl Gibson felt some decisions in the final moments could have gone either way but added the Blues are a different team this season."There's a lot more backbone to the Blues, no doubt," Gibson said. "To decide to run the clock down with three or four minutes to go; that's pretty gutsy. It shows definitely in their forwards – their willingness to compete at the ruck. There's starting to be a bit more steel in their team."A suspended right wing Tanielu Tele'a? No problem, Caleb Clarke comes in for his first game of the season and scores a stunning try as his side pours on the pressure in the first quarter, suffer a bit of adversity later in the half when the visitors nearly come back on even terms, and then dominate the second half.As usual, Rieko Ioane was again a constant threat with his pace and anticipation. Ma'a Nonu rolled back the years with an energetic performance at second-five which reaped him his first try of the season and his midfield partner TJ Faiane was again assured in his decision making and actions.Apart from loose forward Blake Gibson's knee injury after seven minutes which forced him from the field, it appeared as if MacDonald was about to get his wish and see the Blues take control of the game in the first half.Nonu featured in two assists for two tries – first with a cut-out pass for Tom Robinson in the left corner and then following a beautiful piece of deception to put Clarke under the posts. With their big forwards breaking the advantage line with virtually every carry, and the Waratahs missing tackles and conceding ground, it seemed the Blues could do no wrong, but the second quarter put paid to that.A series of penalties forced them into their own territory, with Folau soaring high, as he so often does, to haul in a Bernard Foley kick to crash over, and Will Miller scoring from a lineout drive. The Blues' new patience was shown when Faiane scored after the break with a try after 14 phases which put his side on the front foot again but again came the Waratahs, this time through wing Alex Newsome.Jake Gordon's try with five minutes remaining put the heat on again, but the Blues held firm. They will travel to Hamilton for a derby against the Chiefs with growing confidence.Blues 32 (Tom Robinson, Caleb Clarke, TJ Faiane, Ma'a Nonu tries; Otere Black 2 pens, 3 cons)Waratahs 29 (Israel Folau, Will Miller, Alex Newsome, Jake Gordon tries; Bernard Foley 3 cons, pen)Halftime: 17-14
This show was not what I anticipated. Rather than spend the evening with the American Comedy and Emmy Award winning comedian, Craig Shoemaker, discussing his stand up, TV, and film career, we spent the time diving deep about behaviors, addiction, recovery, healing through laughter––even when there’s nary a joke to be found––there’s none needed. The mere act of laughing, even forced, is a mood changer, not only for the person guffawing, but for all in their path, as well. We tried it on. Vanna White, Merv Griffin, Bill Maher, Cheech and Chong, Farrah Fawcett, Eric Roberts, Billy Crystal, Will Miller, Nancy Allen, Rachelle Carson… some exclusive stories, never before shared, divulged… some secrets told, theirs, and his. We discovered we both spent time in the Laughter Company, near-missing. Craig replacing Eddie Murphy and me, Rosie O’Donnell. Crazy. Our mutual sobriety and varying opinions, perhaps swayed through open hearts and minds. How we’re dealing with our kids’ drinking (Happy 21st, Samantha, who was having her first legal cocktail, as Craig and I spoke), and Craig’s kids. The Champion gene… how to shine light on the darkness of others, and ourselves. Letting go, getting grateful, persistence, resilience… The Wizard of Oz as a metaphor of life. Laugh, an acronym - Love. Acceptance, Understanding, Gratitude, Humility… and how to apply each. Sounds heavy and dry… it t’wasn’t. We laughed like hell. I leave with new tools as a takeaway. I love surprises. The sound was great thanks to our new Blue Yeti, and Kevin Walt. Oh please Facebook, clear the visual blur. Please. Fewer and fewer people know how to have good, lasting relationships. In this episode, Tammy and Lauren discuss the ever growing problem of isolation, depression, loneliness, and suicide and offer hope in building meaningful friendships. On our last podcast, many of you sent us your feelings about live music experiences. The response was great. Now, we want to do a series of podcasts about your musical experiences; the first important song or album, concert experiences, music related to life milestones. You can send your stories to mumcast@rickmum.com. On this episode, I turned to two favorite people of mine, Dr. Will Miller, a frequent flyer on the Bob and Tom radio show, minister, stand-up comic, counselor. He talked about an early special album, and a U2 concert experience. Then Joe Peters talks about some high school special music, and the thrill of being able to become a musical influence himself. We finished with a song from Joe called, "Kingdom Come", which features Joe and music genius Mike Kelsey. Let us know your musical stories, and we'll pass them on, and contact some of you for a podcast interview. Enjoy!
Check out the second episode of our four part series on officer health and wellness, STRESS! Last week we learned how nutrition can lead officers down a path to metabolic syndrome and a host of other health problems. Enormous amounts of stress can further complicate things. Dr. Will Miller, along with the Inside The Squad crew discuss the stressors modern police officers face and ways to handle it. Do you have a friend that you can talk to for hours and be entertained and educated? I sure do. He's Dr. Will Miller, author, counselor, clergyman, stand-up comic, frequent contributor to the Bob and Tom radio show..he even did a series of appearances on "Nick at Night". He's a busy and brilliant man. We recently recorded one of our chats, which I have excerpted in this podcast. We spoke about the meaning of wealth, and addressed the recent sexual harassment revelations, and its effect on our appreciation of creative people involved in this movement. Looking back on the past year plus, we finish with a tune from one of my favorite people and musicians, David Corley, called "Available Light". Happy New Year!
I don’t know about you but I have been in a bit of a funk lately. When that happens I call on Dr. Will Miller! Sit in on my “free” session. We discuss the horrible tragedies that have been occurring nationwide. How do we cope with “bad news” that is forced upon us from every angle? His answer, relationships. We can not hope to be anxiety free without the help of friends and family. And in some cases your friends are your family. Never take that for granted and surround yourself with your “village”. Set down your devices and spend some quality time with the ones you love. It can work wonders to relieve anxiety and the feeling of isolation. We also dip into talking about death. Not a ha ha subject but one that all of us will face. I have a great deal of trouble dealing with this issue. Sound like you? Let Dr. Will help. We finish up with a wonderful metaphor for life using the PBS series Downton Abbey as a model. I felt so much better after our visit. I hope you do as well. More info: drwill.com
In this episode, Inside The Squad digs into why teenagers do the things they do. Ever wondered or asked a teen, “Why did you do that?” Or the common question, “What were you thinking?” Youth Services Director, Rebecca Humphrey, along with LPD Captain of detectives, Kurt Wolf, dive into the Policing the Teen Brain program. Dr. Will Miller, LPD staff psychologist, joins the conversation with his insights and witticism. Enjoy the group discussing new trends in training police officers to better deal with teenagers in law enforcement circumstances. Most of you are familiar with therapist, keynote speaker, professor and former stand up comedian Dr. Will Miller. He was the first guest I ever had on my podcast and you may have heard him on one of his many visits to The Bob and Tom Show; However, his wife Dr. Sally Miller is just as engaging and interesting and she joins us today as well. Sally is a national authority and speaker on coping with a loss. She has written books on the topic, (Mourning & Dancing: A memoir of grief and recovery), made appearances on TV talk shows, and tours extensively discussing a topic that makes many of us uncomfortable. Not Sally; however, she loves to talk about grief and loss and she speaks from the heart. At 24 she suffered the tragic loss of her husband unexpectedly. She was left a widow with two children under the age of 4. How did she move on? What tools did she learn that may help you deal with a loss? We also talk about Will and Sally’s belief in the afterlife. Will's from his near death experience and Sally from an encounter with her first husband Bob after his death. An encounter that happened the day their first grandson, Henry, was born with a serious complication. One that has left Henry with Cerebral Palsy, paralyzed from the the waist down and limited use of one arm. Now, at 23, Henry is an inspiration to all who meet him. He works for the Purdue Women’s Basketball team as a statistician and is a delight to all of his friends and family. Sally is on a personal crusade to help Henry and others with physical disabilities. She is spearheading a program to build "Henry’s House" on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.This self-sustaining co-op will be designed so that people with physical challenges yet intellectual abilities would be responsible for their own care. While tenants without disabilities would provide help with simple tasks. The mission is simple give people like Henry the chance to live independently. YOU CAN HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN. If you would like more information on “Henry’s House” , find them on Facebook, or check out their Go Fund Me page: gofundme.com/ecxunyks. Also be sure and check out Dr. Will’s podcast at DrWill.com. I hope you find this show as special as I do. Until next time: Be Kind!

Even if you are not a divorced parent I can bet you know one or two. We live in an age when divorce is almost the norm for many parents and children. I brought my ex-husband Adam Ritz and Psychotherapist/Emotional Wellness Expert Dr. Will Miller in to discuss how to coparent more effectively. I do not claim to be an expert on this topic but I am not afraid to say that Adam and I have done a pretty good job raising our two daughters in a “non-traditional” home situation. I hope we may be able to answer some of your questions. Dr. Will touches on topics like, bringing in a new partner, the knowledge of extended family members, and the importance of putting KIDS FIRST! I admit we barely scratched the surface on this topic and I hope to have another show with the three of us again. I would also like to recommend a book that helped me tremendously when I divorced. EX-Etiquette for Parents by Jann Blackstone-Ford and Sharyl Jupe. You may have to look for it since it’s been around for awhile but I can’t tell you how many times I referred to this book. I have also given it too many of my divorcing friends. For more information: Dr. Will: drwill.com Adam Ritz: adamritz.com The Adam Ritz Show: adamritzshow.com The Patriarchs: patriarchsmedia.com/
Dr. Will Miller, proprietor of Dr. Will's Neighborhood and The Gathering, educator, counselor, speaker, comedian, took off some of his hats and sat down with us. We had a conversation on satire, and whether these times are so self-satirizing that it must be difficult to try and be more tragicomic than the real events. In times like these, MAD Magazine can just about write itself! We touched on the role of art, music, and comedy to provide the service of sending up the elite, commenting on politics and important issues, or simply providing a useful distraction from modern chaos. Will is a fabulous conversationalist, and you'll enjoy his take on what's happening. We end with a tune from Joe Peters, who will doing a show October 15th with Mike Kelsey at GLM Live in Lafayette (michaelkelsey.com for tickets)

This week, Mike welcomes special guest co-host Will Miller, a center-right political scientist. Mike and Will start the show by discussing the upcoming negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea in the wake of Secretary of State Nominee Mike Pompeo's Easter weekend visit to North Korea and recent indications by the regime that they're willing to freeze nuclear testing and discuss denuclearization. Both Mike and Will are skeptical, but believe that getting the North talking is a step in the right direction. After that, it's a discussion of the Russia sanctions that didn't happen, when UN Ambassador Nikki Haley's announcement of upcoming sanctions was walked back by the administration, which claimed that Haley had gotten ahead of herself. Mike and Will see this as yet another example of the Trump administration's poor message discipline - a problem that seems to stem largely from President Trump himself. The Guys also discuss whether additional sanctions should have been imposed. Next is a discussion of a Supreme Court decision on immigration in which Trump appointee Neil Gorsuch joined with the Court's four liberals to strike down part of a law used to deport immigrants on the grounds that it is unconstitutionally vague. Will argues that this isn't really a partisan issue, but rather one of statutory construction, and says that the real surprise is that other conservatives on the Court didn't have more of a problem with the vague wording of the law. Then Mike gets to talk about his favorite government agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as well as explain the intricacies of the Congressional Review Act, which Senate Republicans used to overturn a CFPB 'guidance' issued during the Obama administration. Mike says that this is a clever / sneaky move by Republicans that could lead to a good deal more Obama-era regulatory guidance being overturned. Will agrees, but as he's no fan of regulation, he sees this as a potentially good thing. The Guys close with a discussion of James Comey's media blitz and what his new book and memos tell us about whether or not President Trump obstructed justice. Mike says that it tells us next to nothing, and the media is making focusing far too much on the clash of personalities. Will agrees, and says that the Republicans' move to release the Comey memos may have partially backfired on them. **What Will's Reading & Watching** [Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities](http://bit.ly/2JeOMTs) (PBS documentary) [Why Historically Black Colleges and Universities are Enjoying a Renaissance](https://on.natgeo.com/2JaoFNa). Having heard from our listeners, this week we have a special three-person edition of The Politics Guys with Will Miller, Michael Baranowski, and Jay Carson. The Guys start off the show with a lengthy discussion around current developments in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Much of the discussion focuses on the application of process and differences between an investigation and an impeachment inquiry. Mike posits that he believes what Trump has been accused of merits an impeachment inquiry and will merit removal from office if proven true beyond a reasonable doubt. Will and Jay both agree—in theory—that the allegations merit some form of investigation but are concerned about the rush to impeachment as opposed to formally looking into the allegations in a public venue first. Given all of the unusual variables in this case—the use of a personal attorney and having it all based on a whistleblower—it is even more difficult to determine what could happen next. All three note the need to have a process that can be trusted in place. Will continues to worry about what Jay terms a permanent impeachment campaign becoming a way of life in American politics while Mike argues that if the president isn't behaving like Trump that shouldn't be a future problem. Next, the Guys turn to discussing Tuesday's election results. Jay begins by pointing out that he has difficulty in putting much stock in the results of off-year elections with historically lower turnout. Will points to the statewide results in Virginia as continuing evidence of a shift of Democrats to affluent suburbs that can change elections—especially, as Jay notes, in new districts. Mike echoes this and rightly suggests the 2020 race may come down to whether Trump can turnout rural voters at a higher rate than Democrats can these new suburban voters. The Guys discuss Bevin's loss in Kentucky but also acknowledge that for such a poor candidate, not even Trump's support was likely to resonate, which is evidenced by Republican performance down-ballot. And even though the Republican was only able to carry Mississippi by 6 points (compared to 17 for Trump), it was one of the strongest Democratic challengers that could have been brought forward. Lastly, Mike, Will and Jay discuss the state of the Democrats heading into 2020. First, Mike explains how Elizabeth Warren's Medicare for all plan is a political document that even Democrats acknowledge has no chance of being enacted. He also questions the impact this has since it will be easy for Trump to denounce the plan in a general election if her own party is doing so already. Further, Mike pushes for Democrats to adopt a more centrist pitch that focuses on opportunity and growth. Will and Jay point out that despite progressives clamoring that they are so large in number, that Joe Biden—as a centrist candidate—is out-performing both Warren and Sanders in polls versus Trump in key battleground states. Will believes if progressives continue to speak louder than their numbers can support, they will only help Trump gain a second term. Lastly, Jay wonders about whose votes Michael Bloomberg might take when he enters the race while Mike points to the strangeness that the general election could be between two New York-based, party-switching, billionaires in their 70s with a history of sexual harassment allegations. Before I start putting together our show host schedule for 2020, I wanted to get your thoughts on our hosts. I've put together a short survey for that purpose at the below link. It's only a few questions, plus some comment boxes if you want to comment on your answers. We do this show for you, and so getting your responses to this will be extremely helpful. Thanks! This week, Mike welcomes political scientist Will Miller back to the show. Will and Mike open by discussing the testimony of Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Included is the perspective of Mike's politically astute friend, Leah. While the Guys differ on whether Kavanaugh is the right person for the vacancy of the Court, they do agree on the credibility of Dr. Ford and her testimony. They also discuss what this means for future nomination battles and the willingness of individuals to even consider being nominated for the Court. Next is a discussion of the federal budget process, which is progressing surprisingly smoothly. While Mike and Will agree that the budget is largely inflated, they disagree on the causes and solutions. Mike advocates for increasing taxes to balance the books, while Will suggests something akin to zero-based budgeting would require agencies to justify the money they request in a more meaningful way. After Jay responds to some fairly intense criticism concerning his comments on last week's show, Ryan provides Will and Mike with their listener mail question this week. Ryan asks the Guys response to a recent Robert Reich opinion piece ( http://robertreich.org/post/177349093095 ) suggesting Congress or the Supreme Court could annul the totality of Trump's presidency if he's found of colluding with Russia to get elected. *Listener support helps make The Politics Guys possible*.
