Former Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz debuted his new show on One America News late last week and was immediately blasted for his terrible performance and horrific appearance on the air. Gaetz was botoxed almost to the point of being unrecognizable, and his delivery was stale and boring. The whole show was roasted by the internet, while plenty of others questioned why the network would even put him on the air after the release of the Ethics Report.Republican Congressman Steve Scalise has an absolutely ridiculous theory about why the New Year's Eve attack on New Orleans happened. According to the man who actually represents that district in the House, the attack occurred because of "DEI" and "wokeness." Republicans will use any excuse to go after what they think "wokeness" actually is, in spite of having no clue what the words they are saying actually mean. Donald Trump isn't the only person getting sick and tired of Elon Musk - Republicans in Congress are also ready for the world's richest man to shut his mouth and sit in the corner. Republican lawmakers are STILL fuming over Musk's lies about the recently-passed budget bill, and they aren't holding back their disdain for his claims. But they won't dare actually get rid of him because they love his money more than they hate his antics.Republicans in Washington, D.C. have made extending the 2017 Tax Cuts a priority as the new session kicks off, but many in the caucus want to know how to pay for those cuts. The solutions they have come up with are all devastating to the public, including the likelihood of cuts to the SNAP program and cuts to Medicaid. And if that's not enough, they are also planning to role back environmental protections and imposing Trump's tariffs - both of which would also negatively impact American citizens. SEASON 3 EPISODE 81: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: To paraphrase Van Jones and other panderers: This was the weekend Elon Musk truly became president. It was also the weekend the other guy became Donald J. Trumpuppet. The number of Republicans who defied Trump over the Continuing Resolution ranges, depending on your point of view, from 29 to ALL of them. Because they also voted by unanimous consent to bury Musk's fabricated controversy over the no-cost land transfer to the District of Columbia. Trump, for his part, is in a bigger hole now than he ever was during his presidency as the self-inflicted losses pile up: The Gaetz Lack-of-Ethics Report may come out today. Other nominations are in trouble. One new one may be Alan Dershowitz and another may have padded his resume. The idea of Recess Appointments is forgotten. Trump has been taunted with the "Musk Is President" chatter. Some Republicans are taking it seriously and suggesting him for Speaker. And that in turn let Democrats emphasize Trump tanked the deal to benefit his interests with the Chinese Communist Party. And Trump spoke yesterday for the first time in weeks and sounded drunk - which is a problem, because he doesn't drink. All while he is being pursued by his two worst enemies: himself - and Musk. B-BLOCK (27:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Remember my suggestion that MSNBC's response to Trump's win and its own tanking ratings was to do nothing but double down and exploit the Liberal Media Monopoly the cowards at CNN, The Washington Post and others were giving them? Guess what! MSNBC's new boss wants... better relationships with Republicans. (40:56) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Martin Shrkeli emerged from his sewer to get owned on social media, New York sends a bill for damages to the family of a guy a police officer killed with an unmarked car, and are there secret Mark Burnett Trump Outtake Tapes? Don't ask Burnett - he now works for Trump. C-BLOCK (50:20) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: You have your Christmas story, I have mine. Mine is about falling off a cliff near Malibu filming a commercial for fast-food chicken. Stick around for the post-closing theme guest appearance Easter eggs courtesy some of my dogs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tonight on The Last Word: The House Ethics Committee meeting ends with no agreement on the Matt Gaetz report. Also, the Manhattan district attorney plans to oppose Donald Trump's efforts to dismiss the hush money case. And questions on Trump's deportation plan remain unanswered. Rep. Steve Cohen, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Professor Laurence Tribe, and John Sandweg join Lawrence O'Donnell.
On Wednesday, a bipartisan House ethics panel investigating sexual misconduct claims against former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) voted not to release its report. The panel was scheduled to meet last week to discuss making the report public but changed course after Gaetz resigned from Congress following President-elect Trump announcing him as his pick for attorney general. The Ethics Committee customarily does not release a report if a member leaves office (with some exceptions). Gaetz has denied all wrongdoing. The George Santos ethics probe. On November 17, House investigators released an ethics report that determined Rep. George Santos (R-NY) knowingly violated ethics guidelines, House rules, and criminal laws. The scathing report detailed alleged misconduct that included stealing money from his own campaign, creating fake loans, engaging in fraud, and deceiving donors about how their money would be used. Santos allegedly used some of his campaign funds for things like spa charges, paying his own credit card debt, and an account on the adult website OnlyFans. The committee voted unanimously to refer the report to the Justice Department for investigation. The House Ethics Committee released their report on their investigation into George Santos this week, and it is even more wild than we could have imagined. After it was revealed that he was funneling money to himself and making obscene expenditures on botox and makeup, an irate Santos announced that he would NOT be running for reelection. But that wasn't the craziest part of his meltdown. Also, an appeals court in New York has temporarily lifted the gag order on Donald Trump that was placed on him (and his lawyers) by Judge Arthur Engoron, opening up the door for Trump to continue attacking the staff of the judge. Finally, Donald Trump's lawyers finally got around to filing that motion for a mistrial in New York after talking about it for a week, and it didn't take long for New York Attorney General Letitia James to issue a fiery response motion. In her motion, James pointed out that Trump and his team didn't make a single accusation based on any merits, effectively telling the court that Trump's team was just griping for the sake of griping.

Media reports UK/Canadian dual citizen Jack Letts (aka "Jihadi Jack") has been stripped of his UK citizenship over his membership in ISIS. That now leaves Letts as a Canadian citizen. Letts, who identifies as British, has been attempting to persuade the Trudeau government to allow him to be moved from a prison operated by Kurdish forces and John Letts, Jack Letts Canadian father told us on air Global Affairs Canada had been in touch with the Letts family and spoken to the possibility of patriating Jack Letts, but then suddenly cut off communication. Possible voter fallout of parliamentary Ethics Commissioner report on Justin Trudeau over interfering with Jody Wilson-Raybould doing her duty in SNC-Lavalin case. Reality is, their national public profiles notwithstanding, Jody Wilson-Raybould an Jane Philpott are running for federal election as independent candidates. They no longer have the Big Red Machine providing support. In fact, the Big Red Machine will be doing everything it can to unseat and defeat JWR and JP. What are the obstacles the Liberal Party will place in the way of JWR and JP? And even if they are elected, how influential can they be as a caucus of two? We speak to a former Liberal MP who lived exactly that reality. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business has its 2019 federal small business platform in place. Facts: 99.9% of businesses in Canada are small. - 86% are businesses with 5 employees or less. - Small and medium-sized businesses were responsible for 85% of new jobs created between 2013 and 2017. - 1 out of 2 small business owners had to stop paying themselves or family members to pay other employees. As we close in on the 2019 federal election what is the health of Canada's small business sector? How do int'l developments like market uncertainty (800 point drop in the Dow last Wednesday alone) U.S./China trade war, a hard Brexit, deteriorating Hong Kong/China relationship affect Canada's number 1 employers? Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Brian Peckford's latest blog is titled "Canada has Crossed the Rubicon - We Are A Corrupt Nation." Deals with Ethics Commissioner's report this week. BP also makes the point that Pierre and Justin Trudeau behaved similarly in "ignoring the fulsome nature of our constitution." - Guests: John Letts. Canadian father of "Jihadi Jack" Letts joins us live-to-air from UK. Darrell Bricker. President/CEO IPSOS Public Affairs. John Nunziata. For years a prominent LPC MP and member of the so-called Brat Pack, Nunziata called out Prime Minister Jean Chretien for not fulfilling the cornerstone LPC promise to "scrap the GST" and voted against his party in the first budget bill. Nunziata was turfed from the Liberal caucus and sat as an independent. He also ran as an independent in his Toronto-area riding and overcame everything the Liberals placed in his way and was reelected. What does John Nunziata expect JWR & JP will face from the Trudeau Liberals? What will they have to do to win as independent candidates? And if they do, how effective can they be as a caucus of two? At the SCCE 2016 Compliance and Ethics Institute, I sat down with four of the top compliance commentators in the field for my first roundtable-style podcast. The premier episode is available for your listening pleasure today. I will post a new episode every two weeks. I host these four well-known compliance practitioners and commentators:Jay Rosen (Mr. Translations) - Jay is Vice President of Legal & Corporate Language Solutions at United Language Group. From that starting point we will all join in. I also include an “On My Mind” segment where each participant discusses what is on the forefront of their mind. This podcast is longer than my others, coming in at around 60 minutes, which allows us to explore the week’s issues in depth. In the inaugural episode we discuss the following subjects: For Volkov’s post on conflicts of interest (COI) in internal investigations after the Yates Memo, click here. The original FCPA Compliance and Ethics Report focuses on the nuts and bolts of compliance. Unfair and Unbalanced - is a podcast I do with SCCE CEO Roy Snell. In it we focus on wide ranging issues for the compliance profession. Compliance into the Weeds - is a podcast I do with Matt Kelly where we take a deep dive into the weeds of a compliance issue, typically technology, internal controls or GRC. We both indulge our inner geekiness in this podcast. Jay Rosen and I wrap up each week in FCPA, compliance and ethics with This Week in FCPA. All of these podcasts are available to you on my site, FCPAcompliancereport.com, and are available on iTunes under the same name. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Show Notes for Episode 1 At the SCCE 2016 Compliance and Ethics Institute, I sat down with four of the top compliance commentators in the field for my first roundtable-style podcast. It was so successful that I persuaded the gang to come back together every couple of weeks for a formal podcast, which is entitled Everything Compliance. The premier episode is available for your listening pleasure today. I will post a new episode every two weeks. I host these four well-known compliance practitioners and commentators: Jay Rosen (Mr. Translations) - Jay is Vice President of Legal & Corporate Language Solutions at United Language Group. Rosen can be reached at rosen@ulgroup.com. Mike Volkov - One of the top FCPA commentators and practitioners around and is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and owner of The Volkov Law Group, LLC. Volkov can be reached at mvolkov@volkovlawgroup.com. Matt Kelly - Founder and CEO of Radical Compliance, is the former Editor of the noted Compliance Week Kelly can be reached at mkelly@radicalcompliance.com Jonathan Armstrong - Rounding out is our UK colleague, who is an experienced lawyer with Cordery Compliance Limited in London. Armstrong can be reached at armstrong@corderycompliance.com. The format is a roundtable discussion where I throw out a question to one commentator to lead the discussion. From that starting point we will all join in. I also include an “On My Mind” segment where each participant discusses what is on the forefront of their mind. This podcast is longer than my others, coming in at around 60 minutes, which allows us to explore the week’s issues in depth. In the inaugural episode we discuss the following subjects: Mike Volkov leads a discussion of the unintended consequences of the Yates Memo/Pilot Program for internal investigations. We explore the issue of “de-confliction” where the government asks a company to halt its own internal investigation for the government to be the first to interview witnesses. We explore de-confliction in the context of a requirement of cooperation to gain the benefits of the pilot program and how such a request from the Department of Justice (DOJ) could lead companies to be unable to disclose to other agencies or to shareholders and keep a Board in the dark about the alleged wrongdoing. What does this mean for the company and the internal investigator? For Volkov’s post on conflicts of interest (COI) in internal investigations after the Yates Memo, click here. Matt Kelly leads a discussion on compliance and corporate governance. We explore the issue of compliance being involved in issues around pricing and sales in companies like Valeant and Wells Fargo. We discuss the role of compliance in areas outside of strict legal compliance but may move towards reputational risk, going into such areas as the new revenue recognition standards and executive compensation. For Kelly’s blog post on the intersection of CEO pay and Chief Compliance Officers (CCOs), click here. Jonathan Armstrong leads a discussion of funding and the UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO), in the context of the recent announcement that the SFO has received additional or supplemental funding to investigate Unaoil. Why does the SFO need supplemental funding and how does it obtain it? What does all of this mean for the continued existence of the SFO in light of a former critic now being PM? Finally, Armstrong ties all of this into Brexit, his recent interview of Max Schrems and issues surrounding Privacy Shield. For Armstrong’s interview with Max Schrems, click here and Cordery’s FAQs on Privacy Shield, click here. Jay Rosen takes us through the compliance conference scene. For those of you who are avid attenders of the various conferences, he discusses some of the key differences in the types observed, such as the nuts and bolts types (SCCE) and others which focus more on commentary (FCPA Blog NYC Conference). He discusses the relative strengths of each and how a compliance professional should think about selecting one or more to attend. He ends with his thoughts on why compliance certification is a plus (or minus). For Rosen’s blog post Designing Your 2017 Ethics, Compliance & FCPA Conference Schedule, click here.
