Last week, I released a video review of a new book from Prestel about Gregory Crewdson. It was significant for me, not just because Gregory is one of my photographic heroes — although yes, that is part of it — but because it was the first project I've done in quite a while that was really just for me. I've been on a bit of a “creative hiatus” for the better part of a year and I've only done a few videos before this. So more than anything, I wanted to see if I could pull it off and have it be interesting and feel like me, rather than just another YouTube photo book flip-through. And before I get too far into this, I want to thank Andy Adams at FlakPhoto, without whom it may not have even happened. Andy is a good guy and if you're at all interested in photography, he's well worth a follow.A few months ago I started seeing a new therapist, and part of what we've been working on is something called Somatic Therapy, which I'll include a couple links to in the notes if you'd like to learn more about it. Basically, somatic therapy focuses on the body and how emotions such as trauma and anxiety manifest as physical sensations. When I'm sharing a particular story or experience, my therapist will sometimes interrupt me and ask me to focus on how it feels to talk about or relive the experience — and not emotionally or existentially, but physically. It's been fascinating to start noticing changes in my breath or heart rate or feel tension start to develop in my hands and shoulders when I'm sharing something disturbing or painful. On the other side, and this is where the video fits in, we're working on identifying objects, memories, and pursuits and activities that give me joy or pleasure and naming or defining what those things feel like.LINKSGregory Crewdson video reviewWhat is Somatic Therapy?Somatic Experiencing TherapyThe Difference Between Reacting and RespondingWhat is Internal Family Systems?CONNECT WITH MEWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com Instagram: @jefferysaddorisEmail: talkback@jefferysaddoris.comSUBSCRIBESubscribe to Almost Everything with Jeffery Saddoris in your favorite podcast app. You can also subscribe to my newsletter on Substack.

A true piece of American west history as cowboy Andy Adams, in his book 'A Texas Matchmaker', recalls his younger days working as a cowboy on a Texas ranch and enjoying the competitions between his ranch and others- events to which came hundreds of men and women. It was a time to compete in feats of horsemanship and a time to kindle flames. The only problem seemed to be that young men could read cattle brands much easier than they could read women..... Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) will be holding its 2022 convention in Whister on September 12 -16. Local governments tradionally seek interviews with high level provincial officials. The interviews can be up to 15 minutes long and cover up to 3 topics. The SRD chose their topics at the Wednesday June 15 Board meeting. Regional Director Jim Abram suggested that they talk about putting more funding into affordable housing. Cortes Island Regional Director Noba Anderson, added that there was a need for more funding for community based, or local government based, or a collaboration between social profit and local government, resilience planning. “I think we would be very well advised to support community efforts to do deep adaptive resilience planning,” she said Chair Brad Unger said he'd like to sit down with the Premier to discuss forestry and aquaculture concerns. These have been divisive issues in the past. Fish farms and forestry are two of the three economic pillars of Campbell River. Several other Directors are supportive, but there are also Directors who take a more ‘environmental' approach. Anderson proposed that this topic be dropped from the list. Mayor Martin Davis of Tahsis agreed, “We do have some fairly different viewpoints. I advocate for large scale forestry reform. I want to see pieces of land taken out of the Tree Farm License so that we can create community forests from them. That will require major policy changes, which may be coming anyway. I'm not sure if everybody would be in agreement on all that. Also I do want to see the old growth strategy push through to a good resolution.” Three of the Campbell River Directors, who have long supported the forestry and aquaculture sectors, spoke up. Colleen Evans said, “I think this board has been clear in terms of support for industries that are driving the North Island economy. We had a presentation yesterday from both the forestry and the aquaculture industry, which is science based statistical information about the impact on the island.” Charlie Cornfield declared, “I won't support a motion that doesn't address forestry, whether it is in favor or in opposition. This board is made up of many different communities and many different residents. It is important that we reference all of them and don't back away.” To which Mayor Andy Adams added, “We know that there are diverse opinions and views on the board. While we certainly respect the differences of views, once a motion is made, that is the will of the board and it moves forward. And I would, with that, ask that the question be called.” The motion before the board was whether to drop fish farms and forestry from the list of topics to be discussed with the province The hybrid virtual/in-person vote itself was confusing. It had to be taken twice, with much discussion throughout the process, but the final result was clear. Five Directors (Jim Abram, Noba Anderson, Gerald Whalley, Kevin Jules and Martin Davis)voted in favour of dropping forestry and aquaculture from the list of topics to be brought before Premier Horgan and the MInister of Municipal Affairs. Seven Directors voted against removing them: Andy Adams, Charlie Cornfield, Colleen Evans, Ron Kerr, Director Dahl, Brenda Leigh, Martin Baker and Brad Unger the board passed a motion “that a request be made with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and the Premier to discuss the following topics: Interministerial cooperation; Community based/social profit resiliency planning; and North Island forestry and aquaculture concerns.”
Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - At their February 9th meeting, the SRD Board voted against setting aside $50,000 to support community climate action planning initiatives. The motion was brought forward by Cortes Island Regional Director Noba Anderson, who suggested the project fit into their strategic objectives for 2022. “When I compare the budget commentary and service goals here to our strategic priorities, this was the one that really stood out to me as a strategic priority that could be very specifically budgeted in resource for in support of existing initiatives that are happening in our communities either that are undertaken by a municipality or social profit sector or some combination thereof that are struggling to find funds to do these climate action plans,” she explained. “If we were able to put aside a very modest amount for a original district of our size, that communities could reach out to the regional district for some collaborative matching funds to support their already ongoing work, I think that would be a very small way of leveraging excellent work that's already underway.” Regional Director Brenda Leigh spoke against the motion, “ I think that if we are committed to climate action, then we should have established a climate action committee that would oversee how any initiatives are implemented from our regional district. I'm not in favour of what director Anderson's proposing, which is to just cast $50,000 out into the air for non-profit groups to access funding. To me that's just like grants and aid. There's no real control over how the funds are spent.” If they decide, say just an example on Cortes, if they want 20,000 to support the old growth flying squad or whatever it's called. Will they get that money? How will they spend it? And how will it be accounted for?” She reiterated the need for the SRD to have serious policy, goals and objectives for a program like this. They need to prioritize the initiative and control the funds and prioritize the initiatives. Since they started holding meetings online, the board found the quickest method of tallying votes is to start by counting people who are opposed. The minutes of this meeting list 8 directors voting against the motion ( Andy Adams, Mark Baker, Colleen Evans, Ron Kerr, Brenda Leigh, Sean Smyth Brad Unger and Gerald Whalley). If you listen carefully, you can hear one more opposing vote in the audio: Claire Moglove. That leaves five five directors who were presumably in favour of the motion: Noba Anderson, Jim Abram, who seconded the motion, Julie Colborne, Martin Davis and Kevin Jules The motion was defeated, by a 9 to 5 vote.
Are there inequalities in divorce proceedings for men? Is ‘Résidence Alternée' the default ruling for child custody? In this podcast, I talk to Patryk Rybiński, the President of FAD Fathers Against Discrimination, http://fad.lu/, and Andy Adams, who have both experienced the inequalities of divorce when it comes to child custody and associated issues. Fathers Against Discrimination was set up to create a platform of dialogue: - to promote gender equality - to raise awareness of gender parental discrimination in Luxembourg Family Courts - to ensure that children's rights are respected They believe Luxembourg Family Law is outdated with regards to divorce and the rights of each parent during custody hearings of children. In 2015 there was a Council of Europe ruling which called on all EU member states to introduce Equal Shared Parenting as a base for family law. [CE Resolution 2079/15]. It has existed in Belgium and Denmark for a long time. There was a change in the Luxembourg law in November 2018 to state that Equal Shared Parenting - Alternating Residence should become the default. Patryk and Andy feel that ‘Résidence Alternée' is still not the default law in Luxembourg. Andy speaks about the 'holy trinity' of divorce being financial assets, property and custody, saying that most are split 50-50 except child custody. Once custody arrangements have been put in place, the court still needs to assign one home the main 'residence', even in the case of alternating parenting. This has all manner of consequences when it comes to receiving child benefit, tax benefits and deductions, access to health records, CNS cards, school reports, and so it goes on. “Zukunftskeess argues that regardless of even or odd number of children in a household the payment cannot be split because the IT system does not allow it. “ This particular quote from fad.lu reminds of the Little Britain sketches where David Walliams drawls "Computer says no". According to Patryk, there are no shelters for men and boys in Luxembourg, even though men also suffer from domestic violence (about 40% in 2019), and are most commonly the ones to leave the family home. Roy L Hales / Cortes Currents - Campbell River Mayor Andy Adams released his affidavit supporting Grieg Seafood, MOWI Canada West and Cermaq Canada in their attempt to get an injunction to stop fish farms from being phased out of the Discovery Islands by June 2022. The virtual Supreme Court of British Columbia hearing starts today. In his affidavit, Adams pointed out that aquaculture has become the city's largest economic driver and its loss would have a significant impact on the local economy. That said, none of the big aquaculture companies made it to the city's 2019 list of top ten municipal taxpayers. It has been repeatedly said that closure of the Discovery Island fish farms could result in a loss of 1,500 direct and indirect jobs. In their February 2021 report on the consequences of shutting down the Discovery Island fish farms, the BC Salmon Farmers Association mentions at least 690 direct salmon farming jobs across the entire production cycle — broodstock farms, hatcheries, smolt farms, ocean farms, and primary processing. estimated employee losses from Consequences of the decision to shut down salmon farming in the Discovery Islands Estimated employee losses from Consequences of the decision to shut down salmon farming in the Discovery Islands, RAIS in, Feb 2021 The most easily identifiable component is the 222 people who actually work on the fish farms, 92 of whom appear to live in Campbell River, Sayward and the Discovery Islands. Mayor Andy Adams – courtesy the city of Campbell River 2019 Annual Report Spin off benefits of the fish farms In his affidavit, Mayor Adams listed some of the businesses that have grown up to support the aquaculture companies: “net-washing businesses, warehouses, labourers, trucking companies, maintenance and repair companies, tire and servicing companies, welders, plumbers, diving companies, painting and building contractors, taxi and shuttle services that get workers from point A to B, tech and innovation companies.” “ … The aquaculture industry created an environment where people could grow up here in Campbell River and look for training and jobs in the industry instead of moving away.” This, of course, meant more people buying groceries, eating restaurants and paying their property taxes in Campbell River. The mayor added that the aquaculture sector was an integral component of Campbell River's social fabric, “I have seen Mowi and the other aquaculture companies donate huge amounts of farmed salmon to golf events; they have supported the City's Canada Day celebrations; and I have seen them host barbecue trailers with money going to charitable causes.” As regards the decision to phase out fish farms, Adams wrote, “… I had always understood that the decision to transition fish-farming in the Discovery Islands would be science-based. But the latest report issued by the DFO in 2020, entitled “Discovery Islands: 2011-2019/2020 Compliance and Performance, Marine Finfish”, stated that the ‘farms in the Discovery Islands are generally very well performing across almost every metric' and that salmon farms posed minimal risk to wild salmon.” “… The problem with the Minister's Decision was not inadequate consultation, there was no consultation.” The day before the decision was announced, Adams and several other North Island Mayors had a teleconference with the Parliamentary Secretary for the Fisheries Minister to discuss a plan to transition fish-farming net pens by 2025. He wrote they were not given a hint of what was coming Photo credit: Sockeye salmon fry by National Park Service K.Martin via Flickr (Public Domain)

Andy is the founder of FlakPhoto Projects, an international community of photographers that operates in a parallel path to the one Powhida and Johnson come from—the New York based studio and museum world. Andy, William, and Paddy began working online around the same time—2003-2005, so we start our conversation there. We track through the exuberance and possibility we saw online in the early aughts, the economic collapse of the late aughts, and fraught political environment we’re now navigating. Flak Photo's Andy Adams asked his followers for their website URLs early this month, and was surprised to find that a number of them didn't have a website. Instagram has become the dominant way to follow photographers and see updates, but that doesn't mean it's a good replacement for a website. In this episode of Vision Slightly Blurred, Sarah and Allen discuss the limitations of social media, and the value of building your brand and SEO through your own website.

Today I speak with Andy Adams, owner of The Growth Arc. Any is a mom, an educator, an activist, a human, and a lover. Her background is in education. She’s been teaching in 7-12 public schools for eight years and her M.A. degree is in Educational Leadership in Human Development. Her studies focused primarily on learning how and why our current culture does relationships the way they do- a bit of relationship anthropology! It was during her master’s program that she found the tools for ‘successful’ polyamory and wanted to find a way to teach those tools to anyone in relationships. Finding the non-monogamous lifestyle changed her life completely. Through many learning experiences, she’s come to find non-monogamy to be a frame of mind, a practice of life -- principles in which to live your life, rather than a relationship structure. She’s not perfect. It has been through a great deal of practicing to clearly communicate what she needs to the people in her life that she has been able to let go of past habits and live an ethical lifestyle. This practice has translated to the other aspects of her professional and personal lives, in the classroom, and into every interaction she has with anyone. She believes everyone deserves to be working towards happiness in all relationships in their lives. Whether these relationships are ones with friends, family members, co-workers, lovers, spouses, or children. That’s what brought her to create The Growth Arc. She has seen firsthand the positive influence that relationship coaching can have, and has had in her own life. By having a space to be honest with yourself, you can start the (often difficult) journey to being honest with communicating your needs to others. While practicing non-monogamy has helped her accomplish this most fully, she understands that isn’t the path for everyone. She also works with monogamous couples and individuals to help accomplish the same goals of education, honesty, and truth-seeking. Today we discuss relationships, boundaries, and interpersonal dynamics. ***Now that we’ve begun to process our history with toxic religion, we seek to regain autonomy over our minds and bodies from residual narratives, whether cultural or religious; while working towards respecting and empowering the autonomy of others. Together, we seek to rejoin the human race and participate in this chaotic experience of existence Thanks for listening and remember: You are autonomous and so is everyone else.
