If your service managers and advisors can't explain Effective Labor Rate in one sentence, money is leaking out of your shop every single day. In this episode of Dealer Talk with Jen Suzuki, Jen breaks down the most misunderstood yet most powerful performance metric in the service department: ELR (Effective Labor Rate). While advisors often track CSI, gross, and hours per RO, ELR quietly tells the real story of how the shop is performing, how advisors get paid, and how profitable the operation truly is. Jen simplifies what ELR actually is (and what it's not), why it matters more than the posted labor rate, and how everyday advisor behaviors like discounting, incomplete presentations, weak explanations, and missed opportunities directly drag it down. This episode connects the dots between ELR and advisor income, shop absorption, and leadership discipline. Jen also outlines practical coaching strategies for service managers, including daily visibility, advisor-level tracking, role-play, discount accountability, and how to celebrate ELR wins so strong behaviors get repeated. ELR isn't a scary accounting term. It's a performance mirror. If you understand it, you can influence it. If you can influence it, you can control profitability. Dealer Talk with Jen Suzuki Podcast |

We're wrapping up the month of “Rocktober” this week on Outdoor Magazine radio. First, Glenn Duncan of Duncan's Outdoor Shop has great advice on sighting in your deer rifle. Then, Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Waternews talks about their November edition. Hour two kicks off with Jake Romanack of Fishing 411 TV. Jake describes his tactics for targeting open water walleye in the fall. Mike Mitchell is up next. Mike is the acting director of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. He talks about changes in that organization and where they're headed. Extreme Long Range shooting expert Paul Phillips is featured in Hour 3. Paul describes how Michigan deer hunters can learn from the ELR pros. We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar and another great venison recipe.
The Barrett M99 continues to prove it's worth the price of admission... ELR impact visibility is discussed. And, do you really need a 35x riflescope zoom? (You don't)... We discuss these and other things on tonight's show. :)
The Remington 783 is a jewel... a low cost rifle that will deliver the goods~! And, what about that Browning X-bolt Target Max? (it rocks!) ... And why the 50 BMG is STILL the "go to" *real world* ELR cartridge. And finally... we do see how they killed Charlie Kirk... let's hope the truth will come out... but don't hold your breath. :/
We've been tossing around LPVO/MPVO for years—so let's finish the system and make it useful. In this episode I lay out a practical naming convention for tactical optics:PO – Pistol Optics (micro/open/closed-emitter pistol dots)NVO – Non-Variable Optics (rifle-rated red dots, holo, prisms, + optional magnifiers)LPVO – Low-Power Variable Optics (1-4/1-6/1-8/1-10; no parallax knob)MPVO – Mid-Power Variable Optics (high-1x/2-10/2-12/… with parallax adjustment)IPVO – Intermediate-Power Variables (3-15/3-18/4-16/2-20; tops out ≤20x)HPVO – High-Power Variable Optics (≥ ~5-25 and up; ELR/bench/tactical precision)I also cover why parallax is the line between LPVO and MPVO, where prisms live, why 3-18x isn't an MPVO, and how hunters can steal the best parts of “tactical boy” glass.Sound off in the comments: What would you tweak in these definitions?Shop & support:Optics Ready-to-Go, mounts, rings, etc. at Ally MunitionsLocal folks: go see Milling About Outdoors for a big in-stock selectionChapters below. In this special episode, Jamie sits down with Bruce Thom, founder of BAT Machine, to dive deep into the history, philosophy, and uncompromising craftsmanship that have made BAT actions legendary. From the company's benchrest roots to dominating tactical, hunting, and ELR applications, Bruce shares how precision, tolerances, and attention to detail shape every receiver they produce. We cover the difference between tolerances and clearances, what defines an “ultra-premium” action, how BAT approaches machining and heat treating, and why smoothness and consistency matter more than shortcuts. With over 100 world records set on BAT actions, this conversation highlights not just the technical side, but the ethos of making rifles that truly perform. If you've ever wondered what sets BAT apart—or why so many top shooters trust their actions—this episode is packed with insight you won't want to miss. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1124: Today we break down the latest Fixed Ops Golden Metrics, showing where service departments are winning and where there's room to grow. We also look at how dealer inventory has returned to pre-tariff “normal” levels, and why Atlantans are playing cancellation games just to ride in a Waymo robotaxi. The Fixed Ops Golden Metrics 2025 report from Reynolds and Reynolds highlights how service departments are stacking up in hours, labor rates, and RO profits—plus the big gains from technician efficiency tools.Dealers are grouped two ways—by urban classification (Major Urban, Metro, Community, Rural) and by 5 volume classes based on monthly customer-pay ROs: Class 1: 1,200.High-volume Class 5 stores topped 3,000 hrs/month. Major Urban averaged 1,613 hrs/month vs. Rural at 490. Major Urban led profit per RO at $414, Rural just $225. Class 1 averaged $400, dropping to $243 in Class 5.Using recommendation software added +0.5 hrs/RO, +$18 ELR, and +$62 profit/RO—worth $9K more profit/month for a 150-RO store. After months of tariff shocks and supply swings, dealer lots look familiar again. The average automaker now has a 73-day supply of new cars — right on the industry's long-term target.Lots once ran as high as 89 days of supply during early tariff panic.Inventories plunged to 66 days when 25% tariffs first hit but have since recovered.Despite costs, prices rose just 1.5% YoY as automakers and dealers absorbed tariffs. Some brands buck the trend: Toyota/Lexus are tight with just over a month of supply, while Ram and Land Rover sit on four months' worth.Waymo has expanded beyond its California and Arizona roots, bringing robotaxis to Atlanta. But there's a catch: you can only hail one through Uber, and it's not guaranteed.Riders can select “Prefer Waymo” in the Uber app, but often get matched with human drivers. Some Atlantans cancel ride after ride—one reporting 20 cancellations on average—just to snag a Waymo.Waymo has only dozens of vehicles in the city now, with plans to grow to hundreds in coming years.Riders can improve their odds by staying inside the 65-square-mile service zone, avoiding highways, and riding outside peak times. As one rider put it, “The fact that it's so challenging to get has turned it into a game.”0:00 Intro with Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier1:08 We'll be at the NAMAD Annual Meeting next week1:45 Webinar on Dealer Reputation Tomorrow2:26 Fixed Ops Golden Metrics from Reynolds and ReynoldsJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

In this candid and wide-ranging episode, Kurt von Ahnen and Toby Cryns reflect on the unique ups and downs of running a small WordPress agency. From their early days coding in HTML and building Flash websites to managing client rosters, teams, and productized services, the hosts explore the joys and hard-won lessons of agency life. One major theme: the freedom (and chaos) of living and working on their own terms. Both hosts share what makes them “emotionally unemployable,” emphasizing how autonomy, community involvement, and passion-driven work keep them committed to their businesses rather than traditional employment. The conversation also covers important topics like pricing services, navigating global competition, managing clients and contractors, and building credibility through niche expertise and community engagement. Whether it's “firing” the bottom third of clients each year or offering templated websites to local food trucks, Kurt and Toby share actionable strategies and hilarious stories from the trenches.Key Takeaways:Letting go of low-value clients can lead to business growth and improved margins.Overseas freelancers often undercut U.S. rates, creating tension in hiring decisions.Being part of your local community (through events, speaking, and partnerships) can naturally build trust and attract clients.Effective labor rate (ELR) is a key KPI to track project profitability.Productized services (like $1500 templated websites + $79/month maintenance) offer sustainable income for smaller clients.Sales success often hinges on personal connections and industry niche familiarity. The path to long-term agency survival is through adaptability and knowing your worth.Important Links:Kurt's Agency: Mañana No MasToby's Agency: The Mighty Mo!Follow Kurt & Toby:LinkedIn: Kurt | TobyThe WP Minute+ Podcast: thewpminute.com/subscribe Support us for as little as $5 to join our members-only Slack group. ★ Support this podcast ★
The "beater" rifle... worth having around? Yes, it certainly is; we'll explain. The ATF is being cut by 30 to 40 percent! And is ELR (extreme long range) shooting practical? Or just fun? We'll knock the idea around a bit on this show. And, will the boycotters be able to hurt Tesla? We were shocked to find out how large Tesla is on a global scale. These and other topics on tonight's show. We hope you'll tune in. :)

We talk about the devastation of hurricane Helene in the western Carolina and eastern Tennessee areas... And, what sort of rifle cartridge might you need for an extreme range "high value" target?
