See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Firefighters across the country have been tackling more wildfires this week - from the Mourne mountains in Northern Ireland to the Scottish Highlands and North Yorkshire moors. These fires in rural areas are difficult to fight. In the Mournes more than 140 fires have been reported in the past few days and firefighters say most were started deliberately. Various countryside organisations, including the Countryside Alliance and the CLA alongside farming unions have been raising awareness of the dangers of wildfires and ways of preventing them. The Ulster Farmers Union is calling for more grazing and controlled burning in some protected areas to reduce the risks. We're focusing on farmed fish this week and salmon really dominates this sector. It's not without its critics who say production is at the expense of the environment and fish welfare. However the industry in Scotland says its continuing to change and improve. We visit an island site owned by Norwegian fish farmer MOWI which believes that farming in deeper more remote waters will help solve some of the problems. The first asparagus of the season is one vegetable that's widely anticipated and valued and one Scottish farm has found a way of edging ahead of most of the others by making use of redundant fruit polytunnels.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney
Farmers are calling for the government to look again at the amount of funding it provides to stop illegal meat imports coming into the country. The Dover Port Health Authority which carries out the checks has been offered £3.1 million pounds by DEFRA for this financial year - the same amount as last year. However it says the funding's too low and will make delivering its remit ‘immensely challenging' and will ‘leave the border largely open'. With an increasing number of confirmed cases of foot and mouth disease and African swine fever on the European mainland, there are concerns the UK isn't doing enough to prevent these serious contagious livestock diseases from entering the country. All week we're looking at farmed fish. Last year Scottish farmed salmon was the UK's biggest food export, with £844 million worth of fish sold in 48 different countries. The industry is not without its critics though, they highlight marine pollution, fish welfare and disease and the impact on wild salmon as some of the problems. Salmon farming is big business on the West coast of Scotland. The Norwegian company MOWI employs more than one thousand 600 staff there and we've been looking into how the business is addressing criticism of the industry. We also speak to the industry body Salmon Scotland.Presenter = Caz Graham Producer = Rebecca Rooney
This week we're back and exploring the latest Q4 financial reports of 2024 from the world's top publicly traded salmon companies. While the holiday season brought profitability across the board, the real story lies in the strategic shifts companies are making - especially MOWI's industry-shaking moves. From acquiring Nova Sea to potentially selling its feed division, MOWI is making bold bets on efficiency and scale. What does this mean for the industry, and how will competitors respond? Tune in for a deep dive into the numbers, key industry trends, and the strategic plays that could define the next era of salmon farming.
Aarron and Cammy sit down on the eve of the season to predict who will win what in the Mowi leagues this season.
The most significant threat of severe weather including tornadoes and flooding since last autumn will target portions of the south-central and southeastern United States this weekend. Also, a seafood company that lost about 27,000 salmon from a fish farm off the coast of Norway is offering a bounty of about $45 per fugitive fish caught. Mowi, the world's largest producer of farmed salmon, said about a quarter of its 105,000 salmon escaped Sunday night from a fish farm in Troms and entered the waters of northwest Norway. A rise in sea temperatures is being blamed for the death of more than a million fish on salmon farming sites. MOWI - the company that runs the sites - says increased sea temperatures in the last 2 years led to an influx of jellyfish and algae, which harmed the fish. But campaigners say having large numbers of salmon concentrated in once place is the real problem - claiming it compromises their health, making them more vulnerable when water temperatures fluctuate.Invasive mink could be eradicated from the South East of England. Mink eat water voles - as well as other animals and birds - and projects are underway across the country to try and eradicate them. After successful efforts in Norfolk and Suffolk, The Waterlife Recovery Trust, with the help of volunteers and landowners, has laid two thousand floating "smart traps” along waterways. And soil has been rising up the agenda in the last decade - among farmers, conservationists and politicians. Farmers in England can be paid to improve soil health and, in Northern Ireland, the government is funding country-wide soil sampling. So how much difference is it making?Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced by Heather Simons

Last week, Mowi, .the salmon-farming giant based in Norway, held an open house to update people on the company's planned expansion. It wants to add capacity to its salmon hatchery in Stephenville. The project first came up for review in 2018, but was rejected after a court ruled the government didn't follow its own environmental guidelines in assessing it. Now it's back on the table, but the Atlantic Salmon Federation says it shouldn't be. Neville Crabbe is a spokesperson,.
Gideon Pringle, managing director of MOWI Canada East takes questions at a public meeting about a salmon hatchery expansion + Gregory Peddle was just a boy when his father, a Coast Guard officer, lost his life with two colleagues off Middle Cove beach.
Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents Around 30 people turned out to meet Green candidate Nic Dedeluk when she came to Mansons Hall on Monday, October 7. Cortes Currents recorded 145 minutes of the two hour meeting, which is far too much to fit into a half hour broadcast. So today's program consists of a few highlights. A copy of the unedited audio is embedded in the written version of this story. As a third of the audience came from the Cortes Island Academy, Dedeluk told them, “I'm so thankful that youth are here and participating in this. You're part of the reason I'm doing this. I'm a mother, I'm a grandmother, and I'm concerned for the children yet unborn.” Dedeluk also gave an overview of her life before becoming a candidate, “I am a marine biologist. About 25 years ago, I came up to study whale/ vessel interactions. I fell in love with the area and I've lived in Alert Bay since 2003. Some of you who have spent time on the watermight've run into a small Zodiac program that does boater education and lets people know about the whale watching guidelines, Strait Watch. That was a program that I helped create in 2003, as well as the Cetus Research and Conservation Society. That program and society still carries on today even though I'm no longer with them.” “In 2013, I started working for the Namgis First Nation. I'm their Aquatic Resources Manager. If it has to do with the ocean or the rivers, those are projects that fall under my supervision and I really love my job.” “While working with Namgis, and still under Namgis, I was subcontracted to work on another project called the Broughton Aquaculture Transition Initiative. That was a four year program where we did work with two fish farm companies, MOWI and Cermaq, as we transitioned to closure 17 fish farms in the Broughton area. That program just ended in March, and so I'm now back to my aquatic resources position with just Namgis. The Broughton project was a project of the Namgis, the Mamalilikulla, the Kwikwasut'inuxw Haxwa'mis nations together. As a biologist, I have experience working with multiple levels of government and organizations to find selective successful paths forward meeting the conservation needs. So that's quite a bit about me. I'd love to hear about you. I'd love to learn more about your concerns on Cortes and hopefully answer some of your questions.” The format we agreed upon at the beginning of the meeting was that speakers who were okay with having their comments included in the broadcast would speak their names and anyone who wished to remain anonymous would not. I believe everyone gave their name.

Aged 13 I picked up a book in my school library. Listening to whales by Alexandra Morton. It changed my life, It brought me to British Columbia and it brought me to Alex! Alexandra Morton settled in a remote area of the BC coast in 1984 to study orca vocalizations. When impact of the industrial salmon farms flooding into the area became apparent, Morton began a 35-year effort to convince government to halt the damage by this industry. She has published dozens of scientific papers on the impact , built the research station Salmon Coast to document the impact, filed 5 lawsuits and never lost, and then occupied the farms with First Nations for 280 days. Nearly half salmon farms in BC have now been closed. Another round of consultations are underway on the fate of the remaining farms. Salmon farming in BC is run by three Norwegian based companies, Greig, Mowi and Cermaq. Morton's recent book Not on My Watch chronicles, among other things, the coverup of impact of farm salmon pathogens on wild salmon. Alles gut also? Leider nein.

There could be a big new expansion coming to the salmon hatchery in Stephenville. Mowi, the company that owns the Indian Head Hatchery is holding a public information session tomorrow to tell people all about it. The session is part of the environmental assessment process to get government approval. The thing is, the project already HAD that approval, until a successful court challenge by an environmental group stalled things. Now, Mowi, the company that owns the hatchery, is once again pressing ahead. Ian Roberts is director of communications for Mowi in Canada.

The Fisheries and Oceans minister, following a recommendation from the Cohen Commission, orders fish farms in the Discovery Islands to close. By 2023, they will be gone. The industry — Mowi and Cermaq go to court to challenge the decision. The court rules in their favour. But it isn't a done deal — it just means the minister has to make some changes before making the order. Meanwhile, First Nations are also moving to get rid of fish farms on their territories. We are crowdfunding to cover the cost of this podcast.
