To what extent does Zohran Mamdani's recent election represent a turn in American politics? In an interview for the Review of Democracy, Fabian Holt (Associate Professor at Roskilde University) discusses the political platform that made Zohran Mamdani's victory possible. Throughout our conversation, Holt maps the evolution of the Democratic Socialists of America, as presented in his latest book “Organize or Burn: How New York Socialists Fight for Climate Survival”, published last month by NYU Press. Throughout the podcast, you can hear the reasons why Holt became interested in studying DSA, as his initial focus was on music festivals and their relationship to the neoliberal framework. As he notes, Organize or Burn is the firstethnographic work on DSA. The discussion then focuses on the strengths and limitations of conducting ethnographic fieldwork on such an evolving phenomenon. Holt argues that first-hand experience is essential in understanding grassroots movements. Another point tackled in the podcast is climate apathy and how the DSA sought to raise awareness about climate change in a sustained way. As Fabian Holt argues, thisis the meaning behind his book's title, Organize or Burn, which captures a key component of DSA's campaign to support Mamdani. For those interested in better understanding how the DSA shaped its discourse and expanded its base, this podcast can provide a good insight. As well, it answers the question to what extent this movement is bound to large cities or canaddress a broader electorate.

In this episode, Andrew breaks down America's “off-off year” election results — and why the headlines don't tell the real story.Yes, Democratic Socialists scored big in New York. But in Minneapolis — one of the most far-left major cities in the country — voters pushed back. Jacob Frey won. The veto-proof DSA bloc on the City Council is gone. And in St. Paul, the pendulum nudged back toward common-sense governance.Andrew also warns Republicans: 2026 may be far more dangerous than it looks. Because without Donald Trump on the ballot — will Trump voters actually turn out?Support the showThe Andrew Parker Show - Politics, Israel & The Law. Follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and X. Minneapolis voters next week will see multiple candidates on their ballots who are endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, or DSA. The political group's profile has climbed over the last ten years nationally and in parts of Minnesota. While the DSA is not a political party, it has members on the city councils of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth and representing those cities at the state capitol. State Senator Omar Fateh is one of the most notable members in Minnesota. He is challenging Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in a race that includes 15 total candidates.University of Minnesota Associate Professor of Political Science Dan Myers joined MPR News host Nina Moini to explain more about the DSA and its role in this political moment.

In this segment, Mark is joined by Jessica Costescu, a Washington Free Beacon Reporter. She discusses her latest article titled, "Inside the Democratic Socialists of America Chicago Convention, Where Socialists Declared Dominance over Dems and Set Their Sights on 2028."
In this episode, Breht sits down with Ahmed and Luisa - two members of the Democratic Socialists of America's National Political Committee and leaders within the Springs of Revolution Platform. With the August 2025 DSA Convention approaching, this episode dives into the growing struggle between the organization's revolutionary left and its more moderate, staff-driven tendencies. Representing a strategic coalition of rank-and-file organizers from across the country -including Red Star, Liberation Caucus, MUG, and Emerge - Springs of Revolution is fighting to remake DSA into a bottom-up, anti-imperialist, and internationally rooted revolutionary organization. From prioritizing local chapters and doubling their funding, to instituting anti-Zionist political commitments and unified electoral strategies, their platform directly challenges the right-wing of the organization and sets out a more radical vision for this evolving organization. We discuss what it means to build DSA into a revolutionary mass force, why Palestine is the “moral compass” of the left, the material lessons of recent uprisings like the George Floyd rebellion and Pro-Palestine Campus Uprisings, and how deep organizing is key to seizing future ruptures. If you're a delegate heading into convention, a DSA member on the fence, or an outsider wondering what the internal political battles of the U.S. left really look like, this episode is essential listening. AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, is on its way to spending over $100 million this election cycle as it looks to punish candidates critical of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza. Earlier this year a coalition of nearly two dozen progressive groups – including Jewish Voice for Peace, IfNotNow, Justice Democrats, the Democratic Socialists of America, the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, and the Sunrise Movement – launched Reject AIPAC, an organization aimed at combatting the pro-Israel lobbying group. Mondoweiss's U.S. correspondent Michael Arria interviewed Justice Democrats spokesperson Usamah Andrabi about the coalition, AIPAC's election strategy, and two of the biggest primary fights of the summer. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. www.commsolutionsmn.com- The war in Israel is front and center on the world stage, and there are a number of things that are starting to surface, that we didn't think that we would ever see again. When Hamas blindsided Israeli families and concertgoers on not only their Sabbath, but also on a huge religious holiday, it proved its cowardice and barbarism. At least everyone is condemning it. Well... not everyone. We are seeing universities engaging in professor-led protests, where hordes of rabid demonstrators shout slogans that are code language for killing the Jews. This is totally unacceptable on every level. The Democratic Socialists of America have been squarely on the side of Hamas. We've seen the pure hate coming from people like Ilhan Omar and Rashide Tlaib, but the DSA in Minnesota has been hard at work spreading discrimination. This was on full display at the protest they were involved in at Bryant Square in Minneapolis. DSA has Minnesota chapters in the Twin Cities, Duluth, Red River Valley, and they all use the same antisemitic language. It's time to choose a side. Who are you standing with? We also discuss new speaker of the House, Mike Johnson. Who is he? Will he do anything different than McCarthy? Is there hope for the future yet? Also, MN Rep Dean Phillips (CD3) is officially in the presidential race. Look out, America! Have you checked out our Spotify playlist? Amelia joins Amy, Steven, and Greg for a discussion centered around the Marxist Unity Group (MUG) in the aftermath of the recent Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) convention. Amy, who earned a seat on the National Political Committee (NPC) through her election at the convention, as well as the others provide an insider's perspective on the organization of DSA and the significance of the National Convention. The conversation delves into the inner workings of DSA, exploring its structural dynamics, the purpose of the National Convention, and the extent of its influence. Factions within DSA, the culture of open debate, and the underlying divisions within the organization come under scrutiny. The team then dissects the proceedings and outcomes of the convention itself. Shifting the focus to the youth wing of DSA, they talk about Marxist Unity Group's strategic approach here. The episode concludes with an exploration of MUG's immediate and medium-term political aspirations, offering listeners a comprehensive overview of their vision and trajectory.
