In this episode, we talk with Anne Michaud, Author of "Why They Stay" As a leading political reporter for the Wall Street Journal, Anne Michaud covered Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign, Anthony Weiner's 2005 mayoral bid, and Eliot Spitzer's rise and fall as New York's governor from 2006 to 2008. Few folks have had the front row seat to the spectacular fall from grace of these politicians and the women who endured the cataclysm with them. Which got her wondering--as so many of us have--why did most of these women stick it out--or stay for as long as they did? Were they simply doing the Stand By Your Man blues, or did they have other motivations? Why They Stay: Sex Scandals, Deals, and Hidden Agenda of Eight Political Wives is the result of her musings and her deeply researched and fascinating analysis. Anne chose to look at eight couples and explore the similarities between them -- how the women responded to the crisis and its aftermath. These women made bold decisions that revealed their own agendas.  · Hillary & Bill Clinton: One masterful decision launched her political career · Jackie & John F. Kennedy: Coping in bed and all the way to the bank · Eleanor & Franklin D. Roosevelt: A lifeless marriage sparks a social champion · Marion Stein & Jeremy Thorpe: Riding out British scandal to provide for her sons · Wendy & David Vitter: Married to the Party versus married to a man · Silda Wall & Elliot Spitzer: Real-life drama spawns TV show The Good Wife · Huma Abedin & Anthony Weiner: How to win against a man and the Media · Melania & Donald Trump: A foreigner's desire to live the American dream Anne found some interesting correlations between all of them and Elizabeth Woodville, the "White Queen" of English history. A widow, she married Edward IV for love, endured his promiscuity to stay and wield power, and ultimately, outlasted him to build the Tudor legacy through engineering her daughter's marriage to Edward's successor. Anne looked at 5 factors in her books--how deeply are these women committed to being the family emotional caretaker, how patriarchal values drive their actions, how motivated are they about building a family legacy, the degree to which financial and emotional security drives their actions, and do they have a sense of patriotism that inspires them to overlook the misdeeds of their husband for the greater good. She assigned each a "White Queen Quotient" measured against Woodville's iconic role as the ultimate political spouse in the face of scandalous male behavior. While we as spectators can only speculate about what drives them, Why They Stay makes a great case for what causes each of these women to play out their roles as stay-beyond-the-embarrassment wives. If Hillary Clinton had left her marriage, she might only be known as the spurned wife of a retired politician. Instead, she became the first woman to run for U.S. president on a major party ticket, a U.S. Senator and Secretary of State. These political wives aren't powerless pawns. They are shrewder than you expect. Why They Stay pulls back the curtain to reveal why women throughout history stand by their man...for better and for worse. In addition to her reportage at the Wall Street Journal, Anne previously wrote a nationally syndicated op-ed column for Newsday from 2008 to 2018. She has won more than 25 writing and reporting awards and has twice been named "Columnist of the Year," by the New York News Publishers Association and the New York State Associated Press Association. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, Newsweek, BusinessWeek.com, Crain's NY Business, Cincinnati Magazine and more. Anne has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including WNYC's The Brian Lehrer Show, NY1's Reporters' Roundtable, and Fox 5 News WNYW....

https://annemichaud.com/ anne.michaud.harman@gmail.com “A journalist explores the motivations and emotional constructs of political wives who chose to stay in their marriages—in some cases, only for a while—after being confronted with their husbands' infidelities .... Skillful prose makes the dishy profiles an engaging read .... A lively political book ...." — Kirkus Reviews Why They Stay is about the lives of politically married women who have stood by their men after sex scandals. It covers Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Silda Wall Spitzer, Huma Abedin Weiner and more. Looking back on the path chosen by the women profiled in this book, we have the evidence to see a pattern as old as the dynastic maneuverings of England's medieval queens. The women married to the "royalty" of our times, politicians, make cold calculations in order to hold onto their "thrones" and their family's history-making potential. Why They Stay argues that women in the limelight remain loyal to their men, because of complex, often unconscious forces. From mapping a path to power to laudable notions of holding the family together, the author examines the uniquely challenging Faustian bargains that political wives grapple with, even as the public spotlight illuminates their every move. Winner of multiple national book honors, including in the categories of Women's Issues and Current Events. Audio and e-book versions are available. My guest this episode is Anne Michaud author of “Why They Stay: Sex Scandals, Deals, and Hidden Agendas of Eight Political Wives" Michaud's book recounts the stories of powerful political couples whose lives—both personal and public—were transformed by cheating. She explores what motivated each of these women to stand by their unfaithful man and, by consequence, augment his positive perception in the media as a virtuous American brand. Michaud contends that these wives were given little choice other than to publicly support their husbands in the face of affairs and sex scandals: an imperative imposed by political advisors and a moralistic electorate who expect women to appear as supportive and dutiful.

Welcome to this week's episode of the StephUp Podcast! Thank you for your support and for coming back each week to listen. This episode features special guest, Anne Michaud.Anne is veteran political journalist and author. She published "American Czarina" and her new updated edition of "Why They Stay" this year.  Anne has focused on social activism for women, political psychology, women's rights, and dysfunctional political marriages.Anne tells Steph how her original book came to be and why the questions from people about Melania and Donald Trump prompted her to write a 2nd edition. In her book, Anne explains the symbolic White Queen (Elizabeth Woodville) and why she gives each of the eight political wives in the book different white queen points. Steph and Anne discuss that they both have an appreciation for Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy and Anne also has an appreciation for the stories about the Spitzers. Patriarchy is a theme throughout this book and Steph asks Anne about this. There is a comment in her book that really stands out:"As they stand on the podium with the cheating husband, modern White Queens receive a good deal of public scorn, even though it was the husband who strayed outside of marriage and is more deserving of condemnation."Follow Anne Michaud  at her website, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and buy her book on Amazon.ca in Canada or Amazon.com in the US.And Buy American Czarina on Amazon.ca or Buy American Czarina on Amazon.comFollow StephUp Podcast on Instagram,  Twitter, her podcast website, and the website for her book, www.stephanieannwebb.com. "Doc" Smith, and a review of Judge Dredd™ America. This issue also features a very rare interview with science fiction author John Norman, famous for creating the Gor series of novels. It is one of the few interviews that Mr. Norman has conducted in the last 30 years. In this podcast, we also include an interview with Anne Michaud, author of "Visitors," which appears in this issue of Polygraff. This is a relatively short interview but we will post a longer interview, in Ms. Michaud's native French language, to another podcast, available on another feed, in the near future.LinksSample of Polygraff Volume 1 Issue #2 at Scribd.Sample of Polygraff Volume 1 Issue #2 at Issuu.World of Gor, an unofficial web site for John Norman's Gor series of novels.DiceCast is a member of RPGPodcasts.comPolymancer Studios is a proud sponsor of Conjurations 2010 (May 15 to May 16 in downtown Montreal).
