Episode Summary: The Air Force increasingly needs a broader set of munitions to achieve mission effects in the modern age. Combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq required a specific range of capabilities. Tomorrow's fights will be different. We need to ensure that we evolve our munitions toolkit to cover these new mission demands. This is especially true when looking at missions in the Indo Pacific—where the threat environment, factors involving range, weather, and mission performance are going to demand a broader range of technical solutions. Gor is a planet, a counter Earth, that sits in orbit at the opposite side of the Sun to the Earth we inhabit. And on the Vernal Equinox, this marks the New Year for most Gorean cities. This is the kind of sci-fi, fantasy sword and sorcery that Chris despises, and Dave loves. So it's only right that Dave's pick to see us into the new year would be Gor! But there might be a wildcard in this 1987 loose adaptation which has the review for this much maligned Canon picture going a different way. The making of Gor (1987) was a quintessential Cannon Films production—big ambitions, tiny budget, and just a dash of chaos. Helmed by Fritz Kiersch (the bloke behind Children of the Corn), the film aimed to bring John Norman's Gorseries to life. Now, Norman's books are… let's say “divisive,” so the filmmakers wisely ditched the dodgy bits and went all-in on the swords, sandals, and overly shiny chest plates. Shot in South Africa, the production made the most of the sweeping landscapes, though "epic fantasy" occasionally veered into "amateur cosplay." Still, it had that scrappy Cannon charm, the kind of vibe that screams, "This'll look brilliant on VHS!" As for the cast, it was a mixed bag. Urbano Barberini and Rebecca Ferratti led the charge, while Oliver Reed—bless him—turned up to chew scenery like it owed him money. Rumor has it Reed's off-camera antics were just as entertaining as what made it into the final cut. The costumes looked like a sale at the world's least practical armour shop, and the effects… well, let's just say they tried. Despite the shoestring budget and dodgy execution, Gor carved out a weird little niche for itself among fantasy film enthusiasts, probably because it's so delightfully bonkers. It's the sort of film you stick on late at night with a few mates and some questionable snacks, knowing full well you're in for some glorious nonsense. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Professor Tarl Cabot is a mild-mannered academic who is accidentally transported to the planet Gor, a savage world ruled by warlords and filled with brutal battles. Upon arrival, Tarl discovers that he's seen as a prophesied hero destined to free the oppressed people from the tyranny of the evil Sarm and his minions. Armed with a mysterious magical ring and a newfound knack for sword fighting, Tarl joins forces with a group of rebels, including the brave warrior Talena, to overthrow Sarm's regime. Along the way, Tarl must embrace his inner warrior, navigate treacherous alliances, and decide if he's willing to leave his old life behind to become the hero Gor desperately needs. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support
This month I had the honor to speak with FDNY Chief John Norman (ret). Take what you learned and pay it forward. Make the fire service better than you found it. RICHARD CURTIS has had half a century in the world of Literary Representation and digital Publishing. Listen to this self described “old timer” share his journey and how he worked with authors of all genres, with special success in science fiction. “A million dollar company,” his agency, in NYC, was recently sold. “I was a literary guy” and “not a tech guy” but he was pivotal in the beginning of the e-book industry. Richard shares the many skills and required communication styles that he has employed to work with authors and manage long careers. Authors love writing so much “they would do it for nothing” so as an agent he learned how to “add value” and “fool publishers” into paying top dollar for these books and build the careers of his clients. He also underscores how as a literary rep, you always reflect and wonder “what could you have done better?” Though this host is not a fan, Richard shares the massive success of the GOR (Gorean Saga) books he represented and sold. Now considered dated by “feminists” in the “80's” Richard says there are still people who role play out the characters in this series of books by John Norman. Beyond the world of books, Richard and his wife enjoy watching and supporting the world of ballet. He has befriended a few top New York City Ballet dancers. You may have heard about Gorean or Gor, but what is it exactly? Gorean refers to a kink lifestyle that originated in the novels of science fiction writer John Norman. It tends to follow a Master/slave structure and is often more of a TPE type of dynamic. The books themselves have faced criticism because of their perceived misogyny so why do kinksters continue to follow Gor? We definitely have opinions on this subject. Miles of the Casual Trek Podcast returns to Derry & Toms as we turn flagellant and cast our eyes over the first in John Norman's GOR series (and the Cannon movie adaptation as a Brucey Bonus). Publishers disdain it, booksellers sneer at it and the literary establishment would rather just not talk about it. But the GOR series still has a habit of popping up in the second-hand bookshops we frequent, because there are still millions of 'em kicking about probably. And there's even a Gorean subculture in Darlington!!! But which side are we on? The establishment (and at least one butcher in Darlington)? Or The other people that think it's saucy and cooooool? LISTEN AND FIND OUT! Spoiler: In the end... we're just with Oliver Reed. CW: This podcast contains discussions about themes of sexual exploitation and slavery that are shot through the Gor novels.

We've heard a lot about the health care situation in Bonavista in recent weeks. The closure of the emergency room there due to a lack of physicians has resulted in weekly demonstrations, and even a claim by one family that their loved one died after being diverted to Clarenville for care. The Town also announced it would offer incentives for doctors interested in practising in the area. Now the province is offering its own incentive packages in hopes of attracting new doctors. John Norman - the mayor of Bonavista - is hopeful the efforts will make a difference.
The frequent closure of the emergency room in Bonavista has caused many people in need of urgent care to travel to Clarenville for treatment. Town officials and concerned citizens have been lobbying for a solution to the closures - and now there is some encouraging news about that facility. John Norman is the mayor of Bonavista, and he spoke with CBC producer David Newell.
Last week, we heard from Bonavista mayor John Norman, about the Town's plans to attract doctors to the community. The Town is offering up its own signing bonuses and a plot of land to each doctor who agrees to practise there. Provincial health minister Tom Osborne says communities are welcome to take on any recruiting initiative they want. But Fogo Mayor Andrew Shea doesn't think it's a good idea for his town.
For years, Bonavista has been the poster child for rural community success. The town - led by Mayor John Norman - has converted old buildings into new homes and businesses. New entrepreneurs and families have moved in, and tourists have flocked to the community. But now, the lack of health care services - as shown in the case of an emergency room that will be closed most of this month - is threatening that success. Mayor Norman spoke with CBC's Leigh Anne Power.
A deep dive into 50 years of leadership, experience, and wisdom. Chief Norman provides a humble look into the people and events that have had their unique place in his journey of the fire service. A Princess of Mars - Edgar Rice Burroughs - Book 1 Title: A Princess of Mars Overview: A Princess of Mars is a science fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first of his Barsoom series. It was first serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Magazine from February to July 1912. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the novel is considered a classic example of 20th-century pulp fiction. It is also a seminal instance of the planetary romance, a subgenre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the decades following its publication. Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. This vision of Mars was based on the work of the astronomer Percival Lowell, whose ideas were widely popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Barsoom series inspired a number of well-known 20th-century science fiction writers, including Jack Vance, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert A. Heinlein, and John Norman. The series was also inspirational for many scientists in the fields of space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life, including Carl Sagan, who read A Princess of Mars when he was a child.
