Bonavista mayor John Norman tells us about restoration work at the Alexander Bridge House
Gor is a planet, a counter Earth, that sits in orbit at the opposite side of the Sun to the Earth we inhabit. And on the Vernal Equinox, this marks the New Year for most Gorean cities. This is the kind of sci-fi, fantasy sword and sorcery that Chris despises, and Dave loves. So it's only right that Dave's pick to see us into the new year would be Gor! But there might be a wildcard in this 1987 loose adaptation which has the review for this much maligned Canon picture going a different way. The making of Gor (1987) was a quintessential Cannon Films production—big ambitions, tiny budget, and just a dash of chaos. Helmed by Fritz Kiersch (the bloke behind Children of the Corn), the film aimed to bring John Norman's Gorseries to life. Now, Norman's books are… let's say “divisive,” so the filmmakers wisely ditched the dodgy bits and went all-in on the swords, sandals, and overly shiny chest plates. Shot in South Africa, the production made the most of the sweeping landscapes, though "epic fantasy" occasionally veered into "amateur cosplay." Still, it had that scrappy Cannon charm, the kind of vibe that screams, "This'll look brilliant on VHS!" As for the cast, it was a mixed bag. Urbano Barberini and Rebecca Ferratti led the charge, while Oliver Reed—bless him—turned up to chew scenery like it owed him money. Rumor has it Reed's off-camera antics were just as entertaining as what made it into the final cut. The costumes looked like a sale at the world's least practical armour shop, and the effects… well, let's just say they tried. Despite the shoestring budget and dodgy execution, Gor carved out a weird little niche for itself among fantasy film enthusiasts, probably because it's so delightfully bonkers. It's the sort of film you stick on late at night with a few mates and some questionable snacks, knowing full well you're in for some glorious nonsense. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Professor Tarl Cabot is a mild-mannered academic who is accidentally transported to the planet Gor, a savage world ruled by warlords and filled with brutal battles. Upon arrival, Tarl discovers that he's seen as a prophesied hero destined to free the oppressed people from the tyranny of the evil Sarm and his minions. Armed with a mysterious magical ring and a newfound knack for sword fighting, Tarl joins forces with a group of rebels, including the brave warrior Talena, to overthrow Sarm's regime. Along the way, Tarl must embrace his inner warrior, navigate treacherous alliances, and decide if he's willing to leave his old life behind to become the hero Gor desperately needs. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support
This month I had the honor to speak with FDNY Chief John Norman (ret). Take what you learned and pay it forward. Make the fire service better than you found it. Cherish the kitchen table talks and strive to learn something new every day. This is the best job in the world, and it is a blessing to be part of it.
RICHARD CURTIS has had half a century in the world of Literary Representation and digital Publishing. Listen to this self described “old timer” share his journey and how he worked with authors of all genres, with special success in science fiction. “A million dollar company,” his agency, in NYC, was recently sold. “I was a literary guy” and “not a tech guy” but he was pivotal in the beginning of the e-book industry. Richard shares the many skills and required communication styles that he has employed to work with authors and manage long careers. Authors love writing so much “they would do it for nothing” so as an agent he learned how to “add value” and “fool publishers” into paying top dollar for these books and build the careers of his clients. He also underscores how as a literary rep, you always reflect and wonder “what could you have done better?” Though this host is not a fan, Richard shares the massive success of the GOR (Gorean Saga) books he represented and sold. Now considered dated by “feminists” in the “80's” Richard says there are still people who role play out the characters in this series of books by John Norman. Beyond the world of books, Richard and his wife enjoy watching and supporting the world of ballet. He has befriended a few top New York City Ballet dancers. You may have heard about Gorean or Gor, but what is it exactly? Gorean refers to a kink lifestyle that originated in the novels of science fiction writer John Norman. It tends to follow a Master/slave structure and is often more of a TPE type of dynamic. The books themselves have faced criticism because of their perceived misogyny so why do kinksters continue to follow Gor? We definitely have opinions on this subject. Miles of the Casual Trek Podcast returns to Derry & Toms as we turn flagellant and cast our eyes over the first in John Norman's GOR series (and the Cannon movie adaptation as a Brucey Bonus). Publishers disdain it, booksellers sneer at it and the literary establishment would rather just not talk about it. But the GOR series still has a habit of popping up in the second-hand bookshops we frequent, because there are still millions of 'em kicking about probably. And there's even a Gorean subculture in Darlington!!! But which side are we on? The establishment (and at least one butcher in Darlington)? Or The other people that think it's saucy and cooooool? LISTEN AND FIND OUT! Spoiler: In the end... we're just with Oliver Reed. CW: This podcast contains discussions about themes of sexual exploitation and slavery that are shot through the Gor novels.

We've heard a lot about the health care situation in Bonavista in recent weeks. The closure of the emergency room there due to a lack of physicians has resulted in weekly demonstrations, and even a claim by one family that their loved one died after being diverted to Clarenville for care. The Town also announced it would offer incentives for doctors interested in practising in the area. Now the province is offering its own incentive packages in hopes of attracting new doctors. John Norman - the mayor of Bonavista - is hopeful the efforts will make a difference.
The frequent closure of the emergency room in Bonavista has caused many people in need of urgent care to travel to Clarenville for treatment. Town officials and concerned citizens have been lobbying for a solution to the closures - and now there is some encouraging news about that facility. John Norman is the mayor of Bonavista, and he spoke with CBC producer David Newell.
Last week, we heard from Bonavista mayor John Norman, about the Town's plans to attract doctors to the community. The Town is offering up its own signing bonuses and a plot of land to each doctor who agrees to practise there. Provincial health minister Tom Osborne says communities are welcome to take on any recruiting initiative they want. But Fogo Mayor Andrew Shea doesn't think it's a good idea for his town.
For years, Bonavista has been the poster child for rural community success. The town - led by Mayor John Norman - has converted old buildings into new homes and businesses. New entrepreneurs and families have moved in, and tourists have flocked to the community. But now, the lack of health care services - as shown in the case of an emergency room that will be closed most of this month - is threatening that success. Mayor Norman spoke with CBC's Leigh Anne Power.
A deep dive into 50 years of leadership, experience, and wisdom. Chief Norman provides a humble look into the people and events that have had their unique place in his journey of the fire service. One day we will have guests back, but until then join John Norman and Sam Baker for an “in the weeds” discussion of Romans 3. Something to note about this show is that John and Sam disagreed on some key points in this passage for about 45min before they hit record, but their commitment to brotherhood and unity in the Spirit let them disagree with respect. This is unity.
Join your host John Norman and Jonathan Brown for a discussion of Romans 4. Something that readers might have to wrestle with in Romans 4 is the precise meaning of “it was counted to him as righteousness”. We probably won't have that worked out in this episode, but it needs consideration. For a fuller picture read through Genesis 14 and 15.

NL's Fish Processing Licensing Board has sent a report to the province, outlining details of a possible crab processing license for a recently refurbished plant in St. Mary's. A Princess of Mars - Edgar Rice Burroughs - Book 1 Title: A Princess of Mars Overview: A Princess of Mars is a science fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first of his Barsoom series. It was first serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Magazine from February to July 1912. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the novel is considered a classic example of 20th-century pulp fiction. It is also a seminal instance of the planetary romance, a subgenre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the decades following its publication. Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. This vision of Mars was based on the work of the astronomer Percival Lowell, whose ideas were widely popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Barsoom series inspired a number of well-known 20th-century science fiction writers, including Jack Vance, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert A. Heinlein, and John Norman. The series was also inspirational for many scientists in the fields of space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life, including Carl Sagan, who read A Princess of Mars when he was a child. It's fine, they were great apples! Miss Honey is fantastic and much more charismatic than we are, so you're not going to want to miss this one.

John Norman's long-running Gor series has a reputation that precedes it. Set on a brutal counter-Earth where beautiful women long to be enslaved by the strong men who maintain nature's moral balance, it would seem that the books have all the trappings of spicy, guilty pleasure reading. Jack and Kate dive into the sixth title, Raiders of Gor, alleged to be the last "good" entry in the thirty-five book series. Listen along as your hosts encounter sexual slavery, drunk crying, and enough tedious agricultural detail to break a lesser reader. Why have critics neglected to acknowledge Norman's high-minded philosophical influences? Can civic pride transform a hive of scum and villainy into a city of heroes? Where do Home Stones come from? How is series protagonist Tarl Cabot a lot like a startup founder? All these questions and many more will be answered in this month's episode of Bad Books for Bad People. The energy of the mind is the essence of life. - Aristotle I always make it a point to never trust an atom....they make up everything. But we're not making anything up on this episode of Laughbox! We're talking Energetic NLP with the master himself, Art Giser! This interview was particularly enlightening for me. I had heard a bit (here and there) about NLP but really didn't k now much detail. Art shares some real wisdom on what it is, how it applies to you, and what may be holding you back. Further, he made it so simple even I could understand it. If you haven't registered for the conference, NOW IS THE TIME! Don't do anything else (EVEN LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE) until you've gone over to the AATH website and made that investment in yourself. Here's the link: www.aath.org. There's never been a better time to start living a happier, healthier, and more joyful life. That can start with coming to the conference! Your Stupid Minds once again takes on a Cannon Picture (and separately, a movie somewhat focused on submission/domination) with 1987’s Gor, based on the fetishist fantasy science fiction books by John Norman. Cabot (Urbano Barberini) is a college professor whose lectures focus on magic rings that transport people to Counter-Earth, a planet that lies on the opposite side of Earth’s orbit and perpetually masked by the sun. After his girlfriend breaks up with him, Cabot gets into a car accident and is transported to Counter-Earth, also known as Gor. It is a savage land of prehistoric people with primitive weapons, dirty/sexy loin cloths, and slave women. Cabot must find the Home Stone (that looks like a giant Pop Rock) in order to get back to earth. Also a dwarf is there.
I was in my mid-twenties when I first dipped my toes into kink. At that time I had no idea there was a name for BDSM or that there was a community devoted to it. What I did know is that there were things I liked that were outside the norm of what I perceived relationships to be. What I wanted was wrong or deviant, but certainly not normal. During the mid-eighties I discovered I loved tying up my then-wife. I used whatever I had handy at the time - scarves, neckties, and even the tie from my bathrobe. I had a pair of handcuffs in the nightstand next to my bed. Playing like this with my wife allowed me to express a certain freedom, and we both reveled in it. Sadly a year and a half later our marriage fell apart, and it was a rather rough breakup. I blamed the kink for a big part of the demise of that relationship. Because of that, I turned my back on my kinky feelings and desires and decided that they were wrong and not normal. For many years I buried those feelings way down deep where they would never see the light of day and toed the line with strictly vanilla relationships. Discovering BDSM For a long time burying my desires seemed to work well for me, but underneath the surface I always felt there was something wrong. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I never quite felt complete or whole. Fast forward to my late thirties early forties, I was doing a websearch on the Internet which was still in it’s early days at that time. At this point I don’t even remember what the search was about but I do remember what came up in the search results. It was a website called Leather and Roses. The name caught my eye immediately, and I clicked on the link. It was a BDSM site and warned viewers that only those of legal age should enter. Entering the website caused a dam inside me to burst. Soon I was digging through the site reading all the articles on Dominance and even on submission that the site contained. I couldn’t get enough. All the feelings and desires I had hiydden away and denied for all those years came back to the surface waving a gleeful flag. It was a major revelation for me that I wasn’t alone, and there are others that had the same feelings for these things. Even better there was a name for what I wanted and enjoyed. One would think that from there it was all easy peasy. I embraced my kinky side and all was well with the world. Right? Not quite. From the discovery of that site I began researching more about this thing called BDSM. It was fairly easy for me to embrace my Dominant side as that was a natural part of who I am. There was another side of this that wasn’t so easy for me to embrace. Realizing I’m a Sadist BDSM is made up of several things: bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. The bondage aspect I already loved, having explored that years before. The power exchange of Dominance and submission was new to me but I grasped the meaning of it and what it entailed fairly easily. Then came the sadism and masochism part. In my digging and learning, I also discovered the visual aspect of BDSM and found myself drawn to images of people being not just tied up but also spanked, flogged, caned, and whipped. What really threw a wrench in my gears was the excitement I felt looking at these images. My mind raced and my blood boiled in a new and exciting way. I’d also found the Gor books by John Norman - a science fiction series that takes place on an alternate Earth where men are dominant and women are sexual slaves. I dove into the series, reading voraciously and basking in this world where men just took what they wanted from women. (Note: even while reading these books, I understood I couldn’t behave like the characters in the book. The excitement was in the fantasy.) Even so, it created a conflict of who I might be and who I thought I was supposed to be. I’d been raised in a fairly religious family that taught me from a very young age you never, ever under any circumstances raise your hand to a woman for any reason. Never. Finding Other Kinksters Here again I found myself in a tailspin and a contradiction of terms. This kinky thing was drawing me in and yet it went against everything I was taught to believe in. I stood at a precipice once again. Do I walk away from it like I did when I was younger and bury these feelings and desires away from the light of day once more? Based on my upbringing it might sound like the right answer, but the thought didn’t sit well with me. Since that internal dam had burst open during this discovery of BDSM, I felt more like the me I was meant to be in a way I hadn’t felt in a very long time. I continued reading what I could find on the web and learning as much as I could. I found out about something called a munch - a local gathering of people who lived and enjoyed BDSM and met once a month to talk and socialize. That got my gears turning again. Does this exist here in my local area? Could I go to a munch and meet other people like me? Again I searched online. Finding a group in my area took time - remember, the internet was still fairly young at the time. Not everything could be found with a single Google search. But eventually, I found my local community. When I attended the munch, I was welcomed by a rather large group of friendly people. The first time there I was rather reserved and didn’t talk much but everyone was very friendly and open. Asking Questions to Understand As time went on and I got to know people in the community I began to make friends. An internal battle still raged within me. How could I really hit someone? I became friendly with a submissive woman at the munch. I mustered the courage to ask her about being spanked. I explained my feeling to her about my conflict in regards to hitting and spanking someone. It sparked an interesting conversation which went a long way to help me understand consent and gave me an eye opening look into the mind of a masochist. She explained to me how she actually liked and in many cases needed to be spanked. How being spanked freed her mind from other concerns and while I couldn’t grasp it at the time she did her best to explain subspace - that floaty, out of body experience some submissives experience during a particularly intense scene. In telling me this she also explained that it wasn’t just anyone that could spank her but only someone that she trusted and knew when to stop and not take it too far. Listening to her explanation was was an epiphany for me. Spanking or hitting someone wasn’t abuse. By providing it (under specific circumstances), being hit fulfilled a need for them, giving them something they wanted and in some cases, genuinely needed. It wasn’t long after that I met my first submissive and she brought up the topic of spankings. I was a bit trepidatious. Instead of refusing her, we talked about it in detail and eventually I spanked her. We both thoroughly enjoyed the moment and talked about it at great length afterwards. She was also the first person I ever struck with a paddle and a riding crop. From that moment, I felt fully complete, like all parts of who I am were in place and I was on the path I was meant to be. The shame I felt all those years ago as a young man vanished as I found that there are others like me who enjoy BDSM. I was able to move past the last (important) hurdle of the stigma of hitting a woman and move forward on my journey into the BDSM lifestyle. To get to this point, I had to educate myself, embrace the idea I liked and wanted things outside the norm, and be willing to ask questions and listen. Thanks to a conversation at a munch with someone that was able to explain the consent, communication and trust required for spankings I was finally able to become the person I was meant to be and embrace the life I desired. What’s the lesson here? Don’t ignore your feelings and ask questions. Learn as much as possible. And embrace who you really are.

Cody is joined by the cast of the real-play pop culture tabletop podcast Shuffle Quest (Gwynn Fulcher, Tom Harrison, and Joe Anderson) to dive DEEP into the world of GOR! You can find all 1,549 Gor novels in the basement of your local “that guy”. 'Plunder of Gor' (Gorean Saga Book 34) by John Norman A mysterious package lies unclaimed somewhere in the great port of Brundisium, and it is rumored that its contents could determine the fate of a world. Whether or not that is true, one thing is certain: Men and beasts will kill to claim it. Meanwhile, a young woman, now merchandise, has been brought to the slave markets of Gor after displeasing a stranger in her secretarial job back on Earth. Unbeknownst to her, she holds the key to finding the elusive package—and changing the course of history forever. Inspired by works like Edgar Rice Burroughs’s John Carter of Mars novels and Robert E. Howard’s Almuric, this adventure series—alternatively referred to by several names including the Chronicles of Counter-Earth or the Saga of Tarl Cabot—has earned a devoted following for its richly detailed world building, erotic themes, and mash-up of science fiction, fantasy, history, and philosophy. From Keene in the 'shire - the liberty media capital of the world, this is Darryl Perry, host of the Police Accountability Report. This week, a couple of stories that should cause anyone critically thinking to see that those wearing badges aren't always operating with the best intentions. John Norman, an employee with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, resigned earlier this week after multiple women he stopped when on duty stepped forward and disclosed that he had groped their breasts. . .Obviously he should be held accountable for his actions. But if anything, this situation proves the harms that stem from treating someone with a badge any different than someone without.Read More Longstanding problems in the Oakland Police Department led to a botched response to Occupy Wall Street protests last year, according to the findings of an independent review of the events conducted at the city's request and released on Thursday. . .So how can bad be made less bad?
