Anthony Brandt is an acclaimed composer who is also a multi-disciplinary researcher. Dr. Brandt is a Professor at Rice University and co-founder and Artistic Director of Musiqa. Like many people worldwide, I had first learned of his work as co-author with neuroscientist David Eagleman, of the amazing book “The Runaway Species: How Human Creativity Remakes the World”. We started this episode with an overview of that book, and Tony's passion for the importance of encouraging creativity at all stages of life comes through in our discussion of his research, compositions, teaching and mentoring. You'll hear about how he and other researchers are using mobile brain body imaging, and how research into the arts are so important to the development of neuroscience. You'll learn about his unique childhood, his mentors and approach to composing and teaching composition, his valuable insights on presenting new music and how integrating art forms can help to connect with audiences. We're also shining a light on his recent album of string quartet music Meeting of Minds and LiveWire which are both collaborations with the NobleMotion Dance Company and the University of Houston Brain Center. Central to this episode is the importance of creativity, and different ways to investigate and explore that. Like all my episodes, you can also watch this on my YouTube channel, and I've also linked the transcript, everything linked here Anthony Brandt website Meeting of Minds Scene 9 video It's a joy to be able to bring these meaningful conversations to you, but this project costs me quite a bit of money and lots of time; please support this series through either my merchandise store or on my Ko-fi page. From a neuroscience point of view, what is creativity? How does it shine light on the current lawsuits over large language models and whether they produce anything fundamentally new... or are simply remixing the old? How do the arts expose something important about what's happening in the human brain? What do we know about the cultural evolution of ideas? And what does any of this have to do with how cell phones got their names, and why koala bears don't write novels? Join Eagleman and his guest, composer Anthony Brandt, as they uncover the surprises about creativity.

A dupla vai falar dos efeitos da música, do teatro, da literatura e das artes plásticas e, surpreenda-se, vai também explicar como se estuda e encara a possibilidade de usar a arte como forma de resolução de conflitos e ferramenta terapêutica.REFERÊNCIAS E LINKS ÚTEISLivros«Neurological disorders in famous artists», J. Sometimes those clients who seem like they're too good to be true, really are just that amazing. When Barbara and Anthony Brandt, a mom and son team, came to Bill Grant to help them build a new brand, he didn't think they were real. Together they were able to build and launch an entirely new brand all while exclusively using Zoom to communicate. They believe in creating real, handmade furniture that's crafted here in the United States. They're also decentralizing manufacturing to better serve the local areas where they sell. Additionally, they are doing all of their sales in house. Growing a business organically by cultivating long-lasting relationships and solving their customers' problems is the key to their marketing efforts. In their mind, they don't sell furniture, they sell solutions. Listen in to hear all about their journey, their brand, and how it's all come together in just a couple short years, despite the pandemic. In this episode:[01:45] Welcome to the show, Anthony Brandt and Bill Grant![03:41] Listen as Anthony discusses the start of the company and the journey to what is now Plural.[09:45] The process behind their marketing.[13:04] How relationships are the foundation of the industry.[14:46] Where the name Plural came from.[19:44] Plural's approach to manufacturing.[22:56] The huge advantage Plural see's with their way of manufacturing.[28:11] The different ways Plural approaches sales.[32:49] “When you start doing the right things for the right reasons you will attract the right customers.” [39:11] Their philosophy behind product creation.[39:44] Why their customer base has grown so quickly.[45:51] Connect with Anthony and Bill.Links & Resources:INDEAL UniversitySupport The Trend Report PodcastEpisode 52 - A Conversation About Product Design with Brian GrahamEpisode 57 - The Power of Color with Laura Guido-ClarkConnect with Anthony:Plural StudiosEmail | Instagram | LinkedIn | FacebookConnect with Bill:Grant Design CollaborativeEmail | InstagramConnect with Sid:www.sidmeadows.comEmbark CCT on FacebookSid on LinkedInSid on InstagramSid on YouTubeSid on Clubhouse - @sidmeadowsThe Trend Report is proudly sponsored by INDEAL U. Tony joins us from Houston, Texas. He shares with us his upbringing in a family with musical pedigree where his parents taught him the value of using his imagination to build and to create. He was tasked to learn the violin as a young boy and he did - but he took exception to practising it. He learned soon thereafter that his curiosities instead lay with actually composing music. We follow Tony on his journey as a young man discovering his talents and passions and how he has applied them to his life’s journey as a composer, an author and a professor. We discuss the animal brain and exploration vs exploitation – and the mystery of the creative source and freewill. We learn about Tony’s take on the “search and rescue” nature of his own creative journeys and the realization of how far we can travel far beyond our immediate sensory world. We discuss how we often defeat ourselves when we are tied up by our veneration of great masters rather than by the encouragement offered by their works. An illuminating chat. The Chat Dr. Anthony Brandt is a world-renowned composer, Professor of Composition and Theory at Rice University and co-author of The Runaway Species, a book that inspired the Netflix documentary, The Creative Brain - and deeply impacted our philosophy at Daydreamers. In our chat today, Tony (or Dr. Brandt) shares some awe-inspiring truths about the human experience - most importantly: creativity is part of our DNA. As humans, our ability to imagine a future that doesn't yet exist is literally what makes us different from llamas or robots, and what Dr. Brant calls “magical.” Tony not only does a brilliant job at explaining the biological and neurological research behind creativity, but he also gives accessible and tactical advice about how to exercise this muscle in our daily lives. As a career artist and composer, Dr. Brandt walks through the exact steps he takes to buck fear, access vulnerability and create something new. Join us for a deep conversation about what makes us human over robots (or llamas), how we can move beyond fear to actually start creating every day, and what we need to do to access our imagination and logic at the same time. Some stuff we also cover: Why our education system today makes kids adults too quickly - and what we could do about it How human beings evolved to create - and why our brains are different from every other animal in the world The difference between creating and coping - and what Beethoven + Picasso had in common Why creatives aren't loners (in fact, it's the opposite) How we can reframe “failures” and why we need new language around risk-taking Resources you might want to check out: Book: The Runaway Species: How Human Creativity Remakes The World Documentary: The Creative Brain, Netflix Website: anthonybrandt.net As always, this podcast is sponsored by: Daydreamers. This week, Anthony Brandt and David Eagleman talk about the science (and practice) of creating new things. Sara talks to neuroscientist David Eagleman and composer Anthony Brandt, authors of 'The Runaway Species', a book about creativity in art, music and the brain. Also, what the internet tells us about our musical lives and how we 'consume' music today; Toner Quinn from 'The Journal of Music' reveals the latest findings. Jason Gots: It’s 150,000 years ago. You’re a Homo sapiens, hanging out in a really cozy clearing protected from behind by a cliff wall. It’s a great spot. Temperate, isolated, pretty safe. Lots of good fruits and tubers nearby. Should you just hang out here forever? Well…you could…but something’s nagging at that medial frontal cortex of yours. There’s a hill in the distance. What’s beyond it? Something different, maybe! Something new and shiny! Maybe today you’ll just take a quick look.  My guest today is neuroscientist David Eagleman. In The Runaway Species, How Human Creativity Remakes the World, David and his co-author Anthony Brandt explore that ancient tension between mastery and curiosity - the known and the unknown. And how the human imagination exploits it to make new things.  Surprise conversation-starter clips in this episode:  Isaac Lidsky on how going blind showed one man the light, Michael Slaby on a 30-hour work week.  Learn more about your ad choices. 'The rock star of neuroscience', David Eagleman teams up with composer Anthony Brandt to present an agenda-setting investigation into human creativity. Our relentless drive to create makes us unique among living creatures. How can we harness this instinct, and where is it taking us? We face global, ‘wicked’ challenges that require all our ingenuity to address. Luckily, as a species we have a seemingly unlimited capacity to generate solutions to our problems. For the full visual experience, watch an edited version of the talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQQJP6mqHC4 This event was recorded live at The RSA on Wednesday 11th October 2017.
