I have always found the war Octavian fought against Antony and Cleopatra hard to understand. How did Antony find himself losing without even fighting a proper battle given all his experience as a general and commanding an army equal to or stronger than his opponent's? Barry Strauss explains the campaign brilliantly. You can find his book The War that made the Roman Empire here. Highly recommended.
This week the Roman historian and archaeologist Jane Draycott takes us to meet one of history's most glamorous and infamous couples, Antony and Cleopatra. Antony and Cleopatra, the last of Shakespeare's Roman plays, is an epic story that begins with the material of politics and history but expands into the realm of romance, poetry, and myth. Following the events of Julius Caesar – Caesar's assassination and the triumph of Mark Antony and Octavius Caesar in the resulting civil wars – Antony and Caesar are now joint rulers of Roman Empire. But Antony has left behind Rome and his imperial duties to be with his beloved Cleopatra, the captivating queen of Egypt. Personal and political rivalries bring Antony and Cleopatra to war with Caesar, in a conflict in which “the greater cantle of the world” is at stake. In the end, the lovers are forced out of the field of politics, but enter the space of legend. In this course, you'll learn the story of Antony and Cleopatra, study two of the most monumental personalities that Shakespeare ever created, and discover how these characters descend into and transcend tragedy In Part 1, you'll be guided through a detailed account of the story with commentary by Joyce MacDonald, Professor of English at the University of Kentucky. This episode includes key background and context for the play's historical source material. The summary is told using the language of the play itself, placing key quotations in context to help you understand where these lines come from and what they mean.
Part 2 explores the play's varied and conflicting perspectives on its leading characters. From the Roman point of view, Antony and Cleopatra are figures who fall from greatness, and their story is a tragedy or even, at times, farce; but from other points of view, Antony and Cleopatra represent a kind of success that could scarcely be achieved or even conceived of in Rome. The episode analyzes the play's characters, language, and mythic archetypes to ask how the play makes so many viewpoints compelling, and where these competing perspectives leave the audience when the play comes to its end.
Part 3 features close-readings of three key scenes in which Antony and Cleopatra articulate their cosmic self-conceptions in language so transcendent that it helps transform their vision into reality. Speeches and Performers: Enobarbus, Act 2, “The barge she sat in …” (Andrew Woddall) Antony, Act 4, “I will o'ertake thee, Cleopatra …” (Scott Ripley) Cleopatra, Act 5, “I dreamt there was an emperor Antony … ” (Dame Harriet Walter and Dame Janet Suzman)

Podcast Record
In one of the most famously torrid love affairs of all time, defined by extramarital cheating, lavish outfits, histrionics, and the shadow of collapsing empires, this episode's main characters define obsession and the insanity of passion. No, not Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton! Antony and Cleopatra! Picking up where “Julius Caesar” left off, Shakespeare cranks up the operatic dialogue and battle scenes as Rome tears itself asunder. Will and James discuss why Cleopatra is one of the most fascinating women in Shakespeare, the amazing language throughout the play, and whether their relationship represents puppy love or a clichéd midlife crisis.CreditsIntro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous)Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous)Illustrative Excerpts: “Cleopatra,” dir. Antony leaves Cleopatra in the spring of 40BC and soon after she gives birth to twins. They would not see each other again for three years. During this time, the stage is set for the beginning of the ultimate conflict. Octavian and Antony, rivals turned uneasy allies turned brother in law, struggle to gain power. Octavian ultimately pushes Antony to make a final choice: Would Antony come back West to duty and navigate Roman politics, or would he stay with Cleopatra in the Hellenistic East? Antony's decision will set destiny in motion.
Their love affair has fascinated us for ages. In this episode, learn about the beginning of Antony and Cleopatra. Cleopatra put on possibly the greatest PR display of all time and even from here, 2000 years later, I assure Antony didn't stand a chance.
Shakespeare's Roman trilogy reaches a climax in The Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra, a love- and wine-drenched account of Octavius Caesar's defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, and his consolidation of power over the nascent Roman Empire. The play is punctuated by bountiful allusions to Virgil's Aeneid. But besides the haunting downfall of the play's title characters, in the background of the action arises the specter of a new religious creed, Christianity. We continue our close reading, especially of the clash of mood or tone between characters in scenes 2 and 3, in the way Shakespeare is representing people trying to set the dominant mood of the scene: Antony and Enobarbus, and then Antony and Cleopatra. Some attention to the extremely subtle foreshadowing and creation of perspective in those scenes. Similarities and differences between Antony's relation to Enobarbus and his relation to Cleopatra.
Since we're now online, and since it is Antony and Cleopatra, we're going to go through the play scene by scene. Here we looked at the clash of tonalities between the soothsayer and Cleopatra's women, in 2.1, and also the way Antony treats the messengers from Rome.
We finally really begin Antony and Cleopatra, discussing Plutarch's interest in character, and Shakespeare's, and what makes a tragic character interesting since we know what the plot will be. Aristotle on pity and terror again: usually the protagonist or main is someone innocent or at worst someone like ourselves: not so in Macbeth. After which we start analyzing the opening scene, with comparisons to Lear and to Hamlet as well (on the quantification of love). Many corny jokes.
