No book in the series gets more hate than Feast. That's understandable--the earlier books comprise arguably the greatest epic fantasy trilogy of all time. Faced with writing a sequel to that, GRRM plotted an entirely different course--Feast sacrifices epic action for internal struggle. The original trilogy is about heroic characters remaking the world around them. In Feast, we're navigating internal landscapes. The transformation is personal. Consider these lines from the book: Have you decided what you are? The question is, who are you? Girl or boy, we fight our battles, but the gods let us choose our weapons. What is dead may never die but rises again stronger. What changed? I died in the Battle of the Trident. Who are you? No one. The earlier books contained many great ideas and insights. Feast goes a step further and shows how you can apply those ideas to enrich your own life. Another big difference is that Feast emphasizes and highlights the social context in which we operate. As a result, it offers a much more nuanced and thoughtful discussion of personal choice and responsibility than does the original trilogy. Feast also differs from the earlier books because it's the product of a different cultural moment. The earlier books were conceived and written in the 1990s, when political scientists were contemplating "the end of history." Feast is written after 9/11 and Bush/Gore, when our understanding of democracy and our place in the world has been massively shaken. The point is, Feast is not at all like the original trilogy--it's even better. Story time! (How fitting for today's topic of language skills and literature?) It was the very first day of our homeschooling journey. The kids and I cracked open the Language Arts curriculum I'd chosen… I hadn't thought to pre-screen the material (rookie mistake) and I began to read the instructions out loud: “Circle all the prepositions.” Horrified, my kids and I stared at each other blankly and we all wanted to cry. “A prepo-what???” I had pulled my kids out of public school, and coming from public school myself, none of us knew what in the world a preposition was. I was the mom. I was the teacher. I was supposed to be leading this whole thing and I didn't even know what a preposition was!? I felt like a failure and I quickly realized that curriculum was NOT going to work for us. I began desperately searching for an effective way to teach my kids language skills. Although my kids are quick learners, I knew this process was going to take divine intervention, because grammar seemed difficult to understand, and to teach. No one was inspired to write, nor did we have any kind of a system in place for learning how to do it well. Enter the unsung hero: Mr. Andrew Pudewa, founder of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). Mr. Pudewa had a system in place (“Structure and Style for Students”) that included easy-to-use videos, pre-selected source texts and key word outlines. On top of that, his charming personality stole the hearts of my kids and if I'm being honest, it stole my heart too. Mr. Pudewa's method for helping homeschool families thrive was unlike anything I'd seen before. My kids became strong, inspired writers (and grammar wizards). Most importantly though, they fell in love with reading and writing and thinking. When I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Pudewa in person, I quickly realized how authentic, engaging and witty he was. I invited him to join me on the podcast and he graciously agreed to share his time and expertise. So, today you are in for an absolute treat! You can head to the podcast now to take in a conversation that is full of tips to help you cultivate language skills in your homeschool. Mr. Pudewa is sharing book recommendations, encouragement for homeschooling moms, one of his famous jokes and so much more! Trust me when I say… this is a don't miss episode! Andrew welcomed Woodson Hughes to the McKee Financial Studios for our June episode of Mind Yo' Business. Hailing from Halifax County, VA, Woodson spent most of his life in Virginia saying that he would never leave. After graduating high school, Woodson went to college to study Education and quickly changed direction to Library Science. That career shift took him to South Boston, VA where he worked as the manager of the library. There, he was put in a position of influence as he developed programs for the community and sought to initiate outreach. Woodson tells us how he became a sort of celebrity in the community. His lovely wife – whom he met in a YMCA during a Virginia drought – nudged him to leave the place he said he would never leave for Bloomington, IN about seven years ago. Woodson talks about his position at the library, what it was like growing up in “Trump Country”, why black and white film is superior, why you should “never say never”, and how literature is of incredible importance to understanding humanity. Per the theme of season six, the conversation veers to Lambert Cafe. Woodson tells Andrew about an imposter restaurant throwing pancakes instead of rolls, and how throwing rolls may be insensitive to the world hunger crisis. If your life has taken unexpected turns, you love film and literature, or you want to use your position for good, this is an episode you do not want to miss! People involved in the arts, literature, or other creative fields are generally politically left wing - even far left. It's much rarer to see someone who is explicitly and openly to the right, though it does happen occasionally. But there's another way to look at it. Our ideas of left and right in politics descend from the French Revolution. But what if we defined them differently than we currently do?My preferred definition of the right, properly understood, is discerning and aligning oneself and the world around him with the truth. Thus, because great art often expresses Truth, that art is implicitly right wing regardless of the politics of its creator. The best art, journalism, etc. often overflows the intentions of its creator. But many of those who have the greatest insights about today's world are not Christian at all. Sometimes this makes their work offensive to American Christian readers. But those who pay careful attention will often find incredible truth, particularly about the deformed nature of contemporary society, hiding in plain sight. Today I want to give some examples of this in the form of three contemporary European literary figures: Hanne Orstavik, Karl Ove Knausgaard, and Michel Houellebecq.

It has been quite a year for us at The Neutral Ground Podcast. In this first part of our year in review, I talk about the growth of our community, my goals for the next year, and I introduce the first of two themes that I want to end the year on: Literature in Conversation. My literature episodes have produced quite a bit of interest in the second season, and so I wanted to highlight some of the interesting conversations and thoughts that came through in our second season. We talk about Bram Stoker's Dracula, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, John Milton's Paradise lost, and Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. I'll be back with new episodes on January 10th. However, if you have not had the opportunity to check out the full episodes, you can use the links I've provided below. After a very successful interview with Eso Won Books co-owner James Fugate back in October 2021, I thought it would be a great idea to have him back for a part 2. The first half of this episode we go in depth about our shared love and passion for Jazz Music. We talk about some of his favorite albums, artists and what it was like to see this great music live for the first time. In the second half we take a deep dive into the world of literature. We discuss what he thinks are necessary reads and important books for the younger generation. Being a bookstore owner for over 30 years he shares some of his favorite all time titles. Lastly we talk about the future of Eso Won Books, since they recently announced they will be closing at the end of the year.

Renowned author and speaker Joseph Pearce discusses the relevance of great literature in our lives today. Humanity is revealed through great literature, and is a vein to explore the ever-present problem of suffering.
So much of our modern life is built upon simplifying the complex. We reduce social interactions to likes and follows on social media and dilute the “news” in our favorite echo chambers. But Azar Nafisi warns that life is not simple and the complexity found in great literature is ultimately liberating of the mind and essential to the health of our democracy. Dr. Azar Nafisi is best known as the author of the national bestseller “Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books,” a compassionate and often harrowing portrait of the Islamic revolution in Iran and how it affected one university professor and her students. Born and raised in Iran, she came to the United States to earn her Ph.D. at the University of Oklahoma during the 1970s. Afterward, Nafisi returned to Iran and taught English at the University of Tehran. In 1981, she was expelled for refusing to wear the mandatory Islamic veil and did not resume teaching until 1987. She taught at the Free Islamic University and Allameh Tabatabai, and went on to a fellowship at Oxford University, teaching and conducting a series of lectures on culture and the important role of Western literature and culture in Iran after the Revolution in 1979. Nafisi returned to the United States in 1997—earning national respect and international recognition for advocating on behalf of Iran's intellectuals, youth, and especially young women. Nafisi was a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC, where she taught aesthetics, culture, and literature, and taught courses on the relation between culture and politics. She also served as Director of The Dialogue Project & Cultural Conversations there. She has lectured and written extensively in English and Persian on the political implications of literature and culture, as well as the human rights of the Iranian women and girls and the important role they play in the process of change for pluralism and open society in Iran. She has been consulted on issues related to Iran and human rights both by the policymakers and various human rights organizations across the world. This episode features a conversation we hosted on Friday, May 21st with author and Trinity Forum Senior Fellow Karen Swallow prior on Jane Austen and her novel approach to virtue. Speaking of Austen's Christian faith, Prior says, “Hers was the restrained, quiet, and personal faith of her Anglican tradition. Her novels are less altar calls than liturgies of ordinary life.” Austen's world may feel quite removed from ours, but her focus on such everyday liturgies illustrate the importance of the seemingly mundane and illuminate the path towards repaired and rightly ordered relationships. Amor Towles is a master novelist. His second book A Gentleman in Moscow spent 104 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Rules of Civility, his breakout debut, is also a Times bestseller, and together the two books have been translated into more than 30 languages, selling more than 3 million copies to date. This comes as no surprise. Amor's writing is elegant and soul stirring, leaving you feeling more engaged, more aware of life's expansiveness. This conversation was a reminder that returning to the creative boundlessness of our youth can happen whenever we choose, that following our curiosity can lead to greatness, and that exceptional literature can be written with the audience in mind.Amor's third novel The Lincoln Highway comes out October 5th. Karen Swallow Prior spoke at The Gospel Coalition’s 2019 National Conference in a breakout session called, “Why, How, and What to Read.” The relationship between God and his people, she posited, has always focused on the centrality of the Word with a specific emphasis on written words. In fact, it may be said that reading is a supernatural gift from God—one that can be accepted, rejected, or lost. It is therefore incumbent upon all believers to cultivate the ability to read the right things, in the right ways, in order to steward the wonderful gift of reading that both enriches our lives and deepens our relationship with the Word who took on flesh and dwelt among us.

High Culture in TNG. When The Next Generation had a cultural reference or an artistic performance, it was often part of what would be called high culture, such as Shakespeare, classical music, or painting. Although cultural references and performances considered to be among the highest accomplishments of Earth culture go back as far as the first season of The Original Series, The Next Generation seems to bring this type of culture into the lives of its characters more than any other Star Trek series. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan and Amy Nelson are joined by guest Duncan Barrett of Primitive Culture to discuss high culture in The Next Generation and its effect on the show. Today on the Betwixt Podcast, Dr. Karen Swallow Prior talks about her newest book On Reading Well: Finding the Good Life through Great Literature. Her book walks readers through twelves literary works that show us how to live virtuously. "Literature is like a boxing ring of ideas where we can try out and test ideas.” - We also discuss the virtue (or vice) of angry reading, Prior's combat boots and why virtue is so tricky for women. “The latin root word for virtue is the same root word for man. So virtue literally meant manliness.” Historically, women have not been expected to be virtuous - with the exception of the 19th century ideal of chastity. When it comes to women’s issues, Prior notices a binary trap. You’re either conservative or progressive. Or you are either egalitarian or complementarian. "It’s a binary based on opposition, conflict, disagreement and denouncement.” What it might look like for women to defy labels and come together in unity, support and affirmation? Karen Swallow Prior is Professor of English at Liberty University. She is the author of Booked: Literature in the Soul of Me, Fierce Convictions: The Extraordinary Life of Hannah More—Poet, Reformer, Abolitionist, and her latest book On Reading Well: Finding the Good Life through Great Literature. She lives in Virginia with her husband Roy and sundry horses, dogs and chickens. Special Bonus: Mandy Smith joins the conversation to talk about a powerful moment at the Women’s Luncheon during the Missio Alliance Awakenings Gathering. Through that story, we explore how God is calling women to live and lead virtuously for the sake of the Church and the world. Links Twitter: @KSPrior karenswallowprior.com

Master Teacher Mfundishi Jhutyms has mastered over five languages and is an expert in reading, writing and translating the Ancient Language of the Nile Valley Afrikans commonly called Hieroglyphics. The language called by the Ancients themselves is Mdw Ntchr. This language is commonly taught in the Universities as a Semetic Language, however the language is an Indigenous Afrikan Language and is related to other Afrikan Languages. A proper study of Ourstory and Kulture of Afrikan People shows that language itself originated in Southern Afrika and ultimately spread down the Nile Valley and other river systems of Afrika. Kemet which is the Indigenous name for Egypt as called by the Nile Valley Ancients is what we call Classical Afrikan Civilization. Here language, culture, morality, science and architecture culminated in creating the worlds most Ancient and Complex Civilizations. This Civilization gave many other Civilizations their Golden Ages including the Greeks and the Arab Civilizations.
