Join us this week as we invite actor Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad) and director & writer Sean Bryne (The Loved Ones) onto The Filmmakers Podcast to chat about their latest feature film Dangerous Animals which is out in cinemas on the 6th June! Giles Alderson sits and has a great natter with Jai Courtney about acting on the sea, why he takes parts, filming in Australia, what he looks for in a director and shooting Dangerous Animals. Then he talks to director Sean Bryne about genre filmmaking, action, stunts. How he made his debut The Loved Ones. Issues on set and overcoming obstacles as an indie filmmaker and the importance of prep and storyboarding. Jai Courtney's breakthrough came with the role of Varro in the Starz historical drama series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" and he quickly followed that up with roles in Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher" and Jack McClane Jr., in "A Good Day to Die Hard" with Bruce Willis. He played Eric Coulter in the "Divergent" film series (2014-2016) and portrayed Kyle Reese in "Terminator Genisys" (2015), and in Stuart Gatt's Catching Dust. One of his most recognizable roles came in 2016 when he joined the DC Extended Universe as Captain Boomerang in David Ayer's "Suicide Squad," a role he reprised with critical acclaim in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" (2021). Sean Byrne first gained international acclaim with his 2009 debut feature, "The Loved Ones." The darkly comedic horror film captivated audiences and critics alike, winning the People's Choice Award in the Midnight Madness category at the Toronto International Film Festival. He followed up with "The Devil's Candy" in 2015, a heavy metal-infused horror film. DANGEROUS ANIMALS is in CINEMAS on the 6th JUNE! I've watched Katrina Law for years on the hit CW show "Arrow" and now I can't believe she's on my podcast. I'm getting total cool wife points on this one! She played Nyssa al Ghul, a former high ranking member of The League of Assassins. My deep track nerds will appreciate just how cool this is. Internationally, she is also well known for starring as Mira on the critically acclaimed STARZ series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” and “Spartacus: Vengeance.” Fast forward a few years and Katrina just joined season 10 of "Hawaii 5-0" and is already kicking butt on, and off screen. I was so thrilled to talk to her while she was on a break from filming in Hawaii. Not only is she a badass in her new role as Quinn Liu, but she's also mom to an almost one-year-old baby girl named Kinley. She took a break from filming to chat with me about the challenges and joys of being a new mom while stepping into a new role on a popular show. "Hawaii 5-0" has been on for 10 seasons and has a well established fanbase. For some actors that would be intimidating. But Katrina says she's grateful for the opportunity and jumped right in. While she has a history of playing tough characters with a mastery of fight scenes, she tells me she didn't start off wanting to be an action star. It's something that she fell into and as it turns out, she's really great at it. Watching her in action makes me think I should try harder next time I'm at the gym. Another role she says she never envisioned for herself is the role of mom. Like me, she wasn't sure she wanted to have kids. So she waited until she felt the time was right and as it turns out, she's really great at that too. We talked about how she manages her day-to-day routine with being on set for long hours and missing her daughter. Like most moms, actors miss their kids when they're at work. It's not just fun and games while you're on set. It's a job. And it's nice to have family to go home to. She says her parents and husband Keith Andreen have been integral to her support system so she can work while they take care of her daughter. BTW, while researching this post I found out that Keith is also from Tulsa! Yay! His Instagram is also amazing so you should check that out. And while you're at it, check out this episode! I loved Katrina's honest and sense of humor about married life, motherhood and being a working actor in Hollywood. You can follow her adventures on Instagram @KatrinaLaw and watch for her in "Hawaii 5-0" on CBS.

A Thracian warrior is sold into slavery, becomes a champion gladiator, and leads an uprising that will shake the Roman Republic. Get ready for lots of blood, sex, and slo-mo on the STARZ original series, Spartacus: Blood & Sand! Welcome to a new series here in the Evil Clones Podcast! On the History Box Binge, Kevin & Doug take a tour through the centuries with the help of the best historical dramas on TV.
So what happens when a franchise's first director - in this case Guillermo del Toro, who had a pretty surprising film that worked out well - steps back to just a producer role and the guy who's done, well, episodes of Daredevil (yey) and episodes of... Spartacus: Blood and Sand (huh? But it has a colon like this movie does, so yey I guess?) steps in? You get Pacific Rim: Uprising, which takes the concept of robots and monsters from another dimension and does... well, did we like it, is what you're asking? Does another multi-million dollar extravaganza that is essentially Robot-Jox on steroids live up to its potential? Sadly, Korey couldn't be with us this week, no (recently-deposed) Andrew, so Jack has his first podcast in a year with just Guest Star Matthew Catania of the blog with the link below. We get into spoilers about 29 minutes in (just listen for the easter-egg Ron Perlman Kaiju commercial, which is a real-Fake thing we found on YouTube! Meaning he did do it, but it's for a goof from the original Pacific Rim). https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com https://www.facebook.com/mattthecatania https://www.twitter/com/MatttheCatania Also find us at: https://www.facebook.com/wagesofcinema https://www.twitter/com/wagesofcinema

In this episode, your intrepid Doctors continue to explore Spartacus and modern incarnations of his story. In 2010 the Starz series Spartacus Blood and Sand hit our television screens. This season functions as a origin story, as our primary sources for pick up the story at the moment of Spartacus leading the slave revolt in 73 CE. With an eye for the historical sources, we consider how this series tackles the details of Spartacus' life and the blurring of history and drama.
We all agree that this episode is the best payoff episode to ever grace the boob tube. We LOVES this episode.
Revelations! Steve cracks Em and Paul up when he imagines Gollum as the Medicus… and we talk about the episode too. ;)
Other than the pure derision we heap upon the Medicus, we also briefly touch on the awesomeness of the dream imagery and how it is used as a truth reveal, and we speculate about Ashur’s personal motivations.
In this episode, we discuss how seemingly insignificant actions can lead to some serious consequences…so much so that it is time for the Gods to step in and assert their will.
A whore-ific episode, and we are smitten with it. We delve a little into the scheming of Lucretia, and some of us admit to feeling bad for Ashur and Illythia.
More talk about the ever vigilant voyeurs, the ever present schlong, and the ever increasing blood spillage. Also, Em reveals she is on Team Crixus…which was apparent already, really.
We have some differing of opinions in this episode, but one thing we all did agree on is Spartacus’ satisfying manner of dealing out some justice.
Villains! In this episode, we discuss the many plays of skullduggery at work…and we cry a little.
Finally, Paul is hooked! This our longest podcast to date! We spend a lot of time discussing the featured gladiator match of this episode, and of course, we discuss naked fighting (it’s unavoidable). This leads to a very entertaining digression where Paul shares an intimate story of his own…
In this episode, we talk about Ashur’s agenda, the coercion of Crixus, and Spartacus’ descent into Hell.
In this episode, we discuss the layers of character development and the reality of men performing sexual acts under duress of command.
In this episode, we speculate what Glaber’s Facebook status updates might be like, and what it would be like to road trip with Illythia. Of course, the oiled bodies are discussed at length.

For a long time, many video games have sought to emulate storytelling techniques found in film, particularly the ways a story is visually conveyed. While a growing number of people are questioning the wisdom of this goal, "cinematic" is still usually a complementary term used to describe games. This week, we turn the tables and examine how aesthetic techniques from video games are influencing TV and film. With the help of G. Christopher Williams' article on the video game aesthetics of Spartacus, we discuss both subtle and overt aesthetic contributions games make to works outside of the medium. As always, feel free to share your thoughts on the sharing in the comments Some discussion starters: - Do any specific films or TV shows strike you as aesthetically inspired by video games? - Is there a particular "look" that denotes video game aesthetics? Is it still pejorative to liken a film or TV show to a video game? - Can film and TV appropriate video game aesthetics even though they lack the ability to appropriate the corresponding mechanics?
