Welcome to episode 222 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We're super stoked for this week's episode for a couple of reasons. First, we survived April Fool's Day. Second, FORM Swim is sponsoring the show all month long. And last, but not least, we have 3x Olympian and Head of Coaching Science at FORM Swim, Brian Johns on the show this week to talk about all about the Smart Goggle. But first…This episode is sponsored by FORM Swim. Smart Swim 2 google features AR goggle based display that can show 9 real-time metrics including Pace, Stroke Rate, Stroke Count, Distance Per Stroke (DPS), Splits, Time, Distance, Calories, and Heart Rate● Directional headings in open-water● HeadCoach Metrics, including head pitch, head roll, time to neutral, interval and setpacing.Training UpdateApril 15th is the totally arbitrary day that we will begin training for ÖTILLÖ Whistler. Almost time to start busting the Swimrun rust! Almost.ShoutoutThis week's shoutout goes to Gerry Rodrigues of Tower26. He introduced us to the Smart Goggles way back in Episode 203 and, since whenever Gerry makes a recommendation we listen, we got them for our pool swimming. The rest is history! Feats of EnduranceThis week's award goes to friend of the show (and friend of Aquatic Park in San Francisco) Erika G. She recently swam from Candlestick to Aquatic Park. A cool 9ish mile swim (16,000yds) in an even cooler 2 hours and 25ish minutes. A worthy feat indeed!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff.Show BusinessSwimrun season is almost here! It's a good time to check in on your gear and replenish anything that might need replacement or upgraded. A good place to start is the Swimrun Swap Meet! Check it out on Facebook and buy/sell/trade your Swimrun gear.Brian Johns, Head of Coaching Science at FORM SWIMIt was great to chat with Brian. As we mention in the interview, we've been using the Smart Swim goggles for a couple of months so it was great to get the inside story of FORM Swim, the cool tech of their goggles and learn about Brian's role as Head of Coaching Science. So much good stuff!Enjoy!~~~That's it for this week's show. If you are enjoying the Löw Tide Böyz, be sure to subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast player and leave us a five-star rating and review since that's the best way for people to discover the show and the sport of Swimrun. “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus… for it is God who is at work in you” (Phil. 2). Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, CA | 2D68 | St. Francis Day - 18 Pentecost (Proper 21A) 11:00 a.m. Eucharist | St. Francis Day Pet Blessing                           Exodus 17:1-7 Psalm 148:7-14 Philippians 2:1-13 Matthew 21:23-32 How do you listen to your soul? How can you hear God's invitation to change your mind? Brené Brown writes about the difference between fitting in and belonging. All of us know what it means to fit in, to try to change essential parts of ourselves so that we will be accepted by others.   Belonging refers to a very different experience. It means learning to “be present with people without sacrificing who we are.” [i] It requires vulnerability and it happens in those rare places where we can really be who we are without pretending. It's one of our highest ideals at Grace Cathedral. Regardless of where we came from, what we may have done in the past, or whatever we believe now, we belong here.   Last Sunday the Hawaiian voyaging canoe Hōkūle'a, arrived at Aquatic Park in San Francisco after a dangerous journey. In the overflowing amphitheater we saw musicians and dancers; we heard prayers and proclamations from Native peoples from across the vast Pacific Ocean. I wish I could express the feeling of joy and celebration that we all shared together.   People describe Nainoa Thompson, the president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society as a Native Hawaiian master navigator but far more importantly he is one of the most significant storytellers of our time. On Tuesday night he talked about the world he was born into. In 1926 the Hawaiian culture and language were outlawed. By the 1970's there were fewer than one hundred people who could speak Hawaiian fluently and they were mostly advanced in age.   Hawaiians had lost so much – their land, sovereignty, language, religion, culture, music, art and even sports and pastimes. It no longer felt like they belonged in their own homeland. In 1948 the Norwegian writer Thor Heyerdahl published a book called The Kontiki Expedition: By Raft Across the South Seas. For many Hawaiians the book's unspoken thesis was that Pacific Islanders could never have had the skill to build canoes and navigate them at will through the Pacific, but instead only arrived in Hawaii by luck on giant rafts setting out from South America.   And so in the 1970's a group of Hawaiians sought out the last remaining navigators (Mau Pialug) and re-learned the practices of their ancestors. They built the Hōkūle'a and in 1976 they successfully traveled to Tahiti. They were utterly surprised when 17,000 people met them on their arrival in Papeete. The mood was ecstatic. The world began to see how they belonged.   But then came the fateful voyage of 1978. Unprotected in a massive storm, stacking waves overturned the canoe. One of the hulls had filled water and the entire crew sat on the remaining upturned hull at midnight getting periodically washed off by waves barely able to hear the next person over because the winds.   The legendary lifeguard Eddie Aikau began to paddle his surfboard for help into the white water of the gale. Nainoa swam over and was the last person ever to speak to him. Later the rest of the crew was miraculously rescued. Back onshore Nainoa witnessed the terrible grief of Eddie's parents. He heard Eddie's mother wailing. After all hope was lost he saw Eddie's father implore everyone to call off the search for his son. For a while fear overtook him and Nainoa lost faith in his calling.   In the most pivotal moment of his life Nainoa's father came to meet with him. They talked about values, about supporting the community and most of all about the destination – not of a particular voyage, or even of his own life, but of the Hawaiian people. Nainoa had to ask himself if he was ready to be changed.   2. When the religious authorities fault Jesus for befriending tax collectors and prostitutes, he tells the story of a father who independently asks each of his two sons to work in the vineyard. The first says no, but changes his mind later and works. The second says, yes but does not follow through. The strict answer is that neither fully did the will of his father (that would have been to say yes and go). But the one who comes closest is the one who actually does the work. And for Jesus that means the sinners will enter heaven before religious leaders.   We may be familiar with the Greek word metanoia which means changing one's mind and is frequently translated as repentance. But this is different. The word here is metamelomai. More literally it means to change one's “cares,” to change what we consider important. It implies a kind of regret or remorse. Jesus says that obvious sinners have this in a way that the religious leaders do not. Understanding how we have fallen short makes us more willing to change our minds.   Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. Living off the riches of his father Francis had a reputation as spoiled but also for putting on great parties. For a while he tried to be a soldier. A serious illnesses in his early twenties made him wonder if he had to change. He dragged his feet, but then began spending time in the ruined church of San Damiano. One day he heard a voice coming from the cross. It said, “Go hence, now, Francis, and build my church, for it is nearly falling down.” He took this instruction literally and within two years had rebuilt three churches that had been falling apart.   Francis cared for impoverished people and became poor himself. He founded a movement of monks. He wrote songs. He attained notoriety for preaching to birds and to human beings. Some say that in the eight centuries since his death no one has more closely approximated the ideal that Jesus teaches.   The twentieth century writer G.K. Chesterton writes that one could never anticipate what Francis would do next. But once Francis did something, all you could say was, “Ah, how like him!” Brother Masseo once approached Francis and asked why the world followed him so ardently, when he didn't seem especially smart, beautiful or wealthy. A friend of mine thinks it is because that while Francis chose, “a life of intense and prayerful austerity,” unlike many other saints he made being a child of God seem fun. [ii] He said, “rejoice always,” both in words and how he lived. [iii]   The most famous prayer attributed to Francis is “Oh Lord let me be an instrument of thy will.” Francis lived by emptying himself out so that God could be a continually growing part of his life. Francis told Masseo that God had chosen him precisely because he was the greatest sinner and that this reminded everyone that all good comes only from God. [iv] Emptying out his ego Francis saw a world filled with God. All people, all animals and birds, even the sun, moon, water and fire became his family. When we empty ourselves of ego nothing lies outside of the spiritual life.   So today we remember and celebrate this remarkable figure by blessing the animals we love. Over the years I have blessed dogs, cats, turtles, geese, chickens, lizards, gerbils, hamsters, mice, etc. We will also pray for the wild animals around us: the pelicans, coyotes, whales, seals, dolphins, sea lions, salmon, hammer-head sharks, red-tailed hawks, racoons, squirrels, and butterflies too. It is a wonderful to live in a city dedicated to a person who we remember by trying to be particularly kind to animals, by in our awkward way blessing them and recognizing all the ways that they bless us. In our lifetime an uncountable number of species will be lost forever because of human activity. I have a dream that one day we will truly care for the other creatures and learn to better understand them.   Nainoa says that all storms come in pairs. When the storm hits, take your place at the helm and face into it. Be humble, pay respect, and stay with it. The second storm is the one inside of us. It is the storm of emotions. In that storm when we are tempted by hopelessness we can choose the way of faith. With God's grace we can decide to be courageous. That is what Nainoa Thompson did.   By the end of the 1960's after generations of being forced to fit in, a Hawaiian Renaissance in politics, art and culture began to truly unfold. We see many signs of its success. Today there are 22,500 fluent speakers of the Hawaiian language. The Hōkūle'a has been an indispensable part of an extraordinary transformation.   In the beginning I imagine Nainoa may have thought he was just building a canoe, but really what he was doing was building up a culture, a people, a promise that we can all belong. And this has grown into something even more powerful. Today the Hōkūle'a sails to unify all native peoples and to share a message, that human beings will never thrive unless the oceans do too.   How do you listen to your soul? How can you hear God's invitation to change your mind? Nainoa Thompson and St. Francis were open to being changed by God. They learned to be humble. They dared to imagine a future when all species will be valued and preserved. May each of us conquer our ego and become an instrument of God. May we belong and our life be a blessing to the whole family of God's creatures.

Welcome to episode 129 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We have a fun one this week! Fresh off of the heels of the EX SWIMRUN's ARK SUPERSPRINT and EX22 events we have Race Director Nicholas Roman back on the show to chat about these trailblazing races. It is becoming an annual tradition to have Nicholas on the show and we're here for it!But first...Training UpdateÖdyssey Swimrun Casco Bay is a month away! We had a great first Swimrun practice (and first Swimrun since Swimrun Lake James) at our training grounds of Aquatic Park in San Francisco. We were out there for 3+ hours and it was cool to see all of our time in the pool and on the track expressing itself. We're dialing it back a bit this week but have some pretty big weeks leading up to Casco Bay as we are essentially training through that race on our way to ÖTILLÖ.ShoutoutsThis week we are shouting out Alex Sheen from the U.K. We love hearing from our listeners but we especially love hearing about how their first Swimrun adventures went. Alex has definitely gotten the Swimrun bug and in short order has already gotten a couple of Swimruns under his belt and is loving it. Well, we're loving it that you're loving it Alex. See you in Austin in November.Feats of EnduranceThis week we are shouting out our friend Stirling Myles of Team Run for Tacos. He's been doing some cool training up in Montreal and recently ran a quirky “unsanctioned” race called a RUNK where folks meet at a random subway station and then get race directions from there. You can check out his write up about the event on Canadian Runner Magazine.Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWelcome to the LTBz news desk!As we mentioned last week, there were a bunch of events in the U.K. over the weekend and it was great to see so many participants at We Swimrun, As Keen As Mustard and Love Swimrun events. Coming up this weekend, there are some cool events taking place.  Over in Spain, we have the first ever Spanish Swimrun Championship as part of Swimrun Madrid. This is an interesting trend of countries coming up with their own national title events and we're here for it.In Germany, Swimrun Rheinsberg is going down and is offering a bunch of distance options for this urbanish event. Here in the U.S., PBR Swimrun Knox is happening on Sunday June 26 in Knoxville Tennessee and that event offers short and long course distance options. That is it for this week. This was a great interview filled with lots of laughs, a feel-good origin story, and, of course, Swimrun content. But first... Training UpdateWe are back at it after taking a light break the week after Swimrun Lake James. We are now upping the swim volume, the run volume, and, well, just a lot more volume all around as we barrel towards ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship in September. Want to learn more about our ÖTILLÖ build? Check out our Countdown to ÖTILLÖ episodes.Next up for us is Ödyssey Swimrun Casco Bay on July 17th. Thank you Nick and Hannah M., Jeff H., and Dave D. for supporting our brand of super niche content and helping to fund our random sticker giveaway. (BTW, another giveaway is coming soon!)We also want to give a special shoutout to a fellow Bay Area Swimrunner Jonathan Pascual. If anyone wants to help him and his family cover some of their upcoming medical expenses, his friends have set up a gofundme page to accept donations. Feats of EnduranceThis week's winner is Abby Rose. She's been crushing some major open water swims lately including the 5 Cove's of Death swim in Aquatic Park (5 loops around the perimeter of historic cold water home of the Dolphin and South End Rowing Clubs…and training ground of the Löw Tide Böyz), then a casual 4-hour, 12,000yd-ish swim, and she even swam in the green waters of Foster City. We were told that the water was chilly but good times were had by all.In Europe, there were a couple of races this past weekend, including Swimrun Portugal's Lagoa Swimrun which looked ridiculously epic and the Anjou Swimrun which also looked amazing. But that is not all, in the last few weeks since our last TWIS update, there have been a bunch of awesome Swimruns, including Swimrun Costa Brava and Swimrunman Gorges du Verdon. Both of these events looked world class and so was the podiums that featured a lot of former guests of the show including, Victor Dahl, Alexis Charrier, Hugo Tormento, Desirée Andersson, and Sabina Rapelli. (Sabina was even bitten by a dog during the ultra distance course at Swimrunman and still won the Women's division and came in 3rd overall!)In the bummer news department, like super bummer news, Breca Swimrun has announced that they are canceling all of their events in the UK and New Zealand for 2022. This news might not come as a total surprise given the messages that have been coming out from them but it's still a bummer. But all hope is not lost! 3D Events (based in Cambridge, UK)  announced that they have been working behind the scenes and will be putting on the Jersey Swimrun on September 3rd, 2022. A lot of folks might be racing another event in a Scandinavian country around that time but we're stoked that the Jersey Swimrun will go on!Finally, ÖTILLÖ is just a week away from kicking off their 2022 season with their Swimrun Utö event. Welcome to episode 117 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We have a super random episode for everyone this week. We've gone deep into the LTBz vault and found a one-off podcast that we recorded after racing our second Swimrun ever back in 2018. We're talking about SwimrunUSA's (now Ödyssey Swimrun) Casco Bay a.k.a., “Cole Classic.” This is a peek back in time to the primordial origins of LTBz and the race that caused us to fall in love with the sport of Swimrun. But first... Training UpdateSwimrun Lake James is less than a month away and we finally did our first Swimrun practice together. Short story: the water was cold AF! Like 51 degrees Fahrenheit (10.5 Celsius) cold AF! Despite that, it was great to bust some rust and start dialing in transitions and different paces as we head towards Lake James.ShoutoutsThis week we are shouting out Dan Streetman. By chance, Dan was running on the Embarcadero on Saturday morning while we were experiencing brain freeze in Aquatic Park when Dan noticed us (the only two dudes running out the water and down the street) and snapped a photo to send to his Swedish co-worker (and future guest of the show Anna) mentioning that he saw a couple of Swimrunners. Long story short, Anna recognized us and proceeded to blow Dan's mind. Small world indeed!Feats of EnduranceMajor feats of endurance this week from Marika Wagner and Ingrid Kjellström for their completion of the 2022 Cape Epic. We're not sure why we decided to record a podcast of our race experience but here we are. Welcome to episode seventy of the Low Tide Boyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We’re headed back to the U.K. this week (North Wales to be exact) to chat with Anna Naylor, founder of Smoc Smoc. Don’t know what Smoc Smoc is, well you’re about to get an education!More on this interview later in the show.Training UpdateWe did our first Swimrun practice of the year on Saturday! Went to our usual stomping grounds of Aquatic Park in San Francisco and had fun testing out the NU Orza pull buoy, Ark Sports KORP wetsuit, and Frank Paddles swim paddles in open water. (We will save our impressions for our Gear Talk show so stay tuned for that.) We did 6 runs and 4 swims with the runs increasing from 1 mile 3 and then back down with the swims staying static at around 400yds. The water was 56F (13C) so the shorter swims were just fine for our delicate bodies. We were stoked to be back out there and it will start being a regular thing now that we are about three months away from Ödyssey Swimrun Casco Bay. ShoutoutsThis week we’re shouting out everyone that’s headed to Boonsboro for Swimrun Maryland happening this weekend. The start list had some pretty funny team names so bonus shoutouts to: The Her-ricanes, Team Amphibilicous, Big Otter Energy, Please Bring Me My Whine, Grumpy Squared, This Tether’s For Strangling, Buoy oh Buoy, Doing This Again!, and We Put the F in Swimrfun.Yet another race that we would love to race but alas, we’re trying to keep our happy marriages happy and Chris will be in Texas for work. Feats of EnduranceThis week’s winner is Ben Kennedy from the U.K. Not only did he post a cool looking Swimrun workout this past week, the location was extremely British sounding. Today's guest is an Olympic Trials qualifier and Pan American gold medalist. Catherine Breed has always loved the water. She wasn't sure what to do after her college career swimming ended, but fortuitously, a friend introduced her to the Dolphin club, based at San Francisco's Aquatic Park.At her first open water swimming event hosted by the Dolphin Club event she was a complete unknown. She was immediately hooked. Her first marathon swim was completing the length of Lake Tahoe, in record setting time. I love how Catherine describes marathon swimmers as having to scratch an itch. This is exactly how it transpired for me! After completing my first 10 mile open water swim, I immediately jumped on the internet trying to find out what else was out there. Fresh on the scene, and incredibly driven, I suspect we'll be seeing a lot more of Catherine Breed in the marathon swimming world! In her own words: Former pool swimmer for Cal, 2x Pan American Gold Medalist, and 3x Olympic trials qualifier found love of open water in 2017. Since then had completed 2/ oceans 7 and broken 3 records along the way, currently holding fastest time for Lake Tahoe. Welcome to episode thirty of the Low Tide Boyz, a Swimrun Podcast! We have the one and only Mario Fraioli on the show this week. He’s an Olympic level running coach, host of the morning shakeout podcast/newsletter, and the last member of the Marin County Holy Coaching Trinity of to be interviewed for the show. (Mike Olzinski and Nate Helming are the other two members of that crew.) More on Mario later in the show.Ötillö World Championship UpdateIf you’ve been off the grid or just getting all your Swimrun reporting from us, then you haven’t heard that Ötillö made the tough decision to cancel this year’s World Championship. You can read more about their decision here. You can also read about how the slots are being set for the 2021 race here. This hasn’t been without controversy but there’s no way to please everyone and we are living in unprecedented times. In other (happier) news, Ötillö Engadin happened last weekend and it looked like it was an epic weekend in Switzerland. If you’re curious as to what the course is like, check out our course preview episode and start planning for 2021!Training UpdateChipper was on vacation in Lake Tahoe and enjoyed some time away from the show while swimming and running in one of the most beautiful places in California.Chris and Sandrine teamed up to race the Swimrun Edmonton Virtual Race at Aquatic Park in San Francisco. “Team Untethered” made their debut and apparently won a prize box from the race organizers. True to the LTBz pact, we didn’t use a tether. (This was a good thing since Sandrine is an amazing swimmer and Chris would have been dead weight on that tether.)ShoutoutThis we’re shouting out Patrick from Italy. He’s a triathlete that was looking for something else to do and DIY’d his own pull buoy, got after it, and is now “100% hooked.” Glad we played a small part in his new Swimrun journey.Feats of Endurance Weekly AwardWe had a lot of feats of endurance this week! We had a couple of folks in our Strava club that raced Ötillö Engadin over the weekend. Tobias and G Flo raced the World Series race on Sunday and looks like they had the best time in Engadin. You can check out their race report on Spotify here.We also wanted to give a special shout out to the Swimrun Labs crew doing a 50k distance Swimrun. (They can’t win the Feats of Endurance because we co-host a show with them) Here’s their description of the Swimrun: “12 runs, 11 swims, 50k total distance, volcano views, bracing ocean swims through kelp forests to secret coves, single track climbs through prehistoric old growth forest, new friends, old friends, mobile roving aid station, PBJs for days, currents from all directions... we’ve often said we could swimrun all day and today we actually got to. We were back, middle, and front of the pack, had highs, lows, swallowed some seawater, and shouted out loud about the magic.” LTBz UpdatesWe have a new Patron on Patreon! Thank you Dirk for the support all the way from Germany. We really appreciate the support! We also want to announce yet another new project, the International Swimrun Adventure Guide! With races being canceled and a lot of people training on their home turfs, we’ve noticed in our Strava club that a lot of teams have their go-to training locations. We thought it would be fun to compile them all in one place so swimrunners can explore new training grounds if they happen to be visiting from out of town/state/country or if they are looking for some variety in their training. We need your help to get this off of the ground. If you have a great training route that you don’t want to keep secret you can head over to our website and fill out the form on our website homepage and we’ll start compiling the entries and getting them on the site.Mario Fraioli InterviewOur guest this week needs no introductions in running circles. Mario Fraioli is an Olympic-level running coach, a journalist, the host of the morning shakeout podcast, the creator of the morning shakeout newsletter and one of the greatest human beings around. We’ve known Mario for years (Full disclosure: Chris’s company helps to produce the morning shakeout podcast and newsletter and manages sponsorship and sales) and frankly, he has no business being on our show, but he’s just that awesome! In this interview we cover a lot of topics including his coaching background, how the morning shakeout newsletter got started and how that expanded to the super successful podcast, and what he’s up to now.We spent most of the interview talking about running and how to approach any Swimrun course and reverse engineer the type of build that you would want to have a successful race. According to Mario, every race is about problem-solving and understanding the course. We also talked about the mental game and how to work on “perspective” while training for races and the importance of making sure that every session has a purpose and some type of “quality” to maximize both the training effect but also developing mental toughness. All in all, there was a lot of knowledge being dropped on this episode. We encourage everyone to sign up for Mario’s newsletter and listen to the podcast. You can also follow Mario on Twitter and Instagram. That’s it for this week’s show. We used Hyde Street (a very steep street famous for the cable cars that go up and down it from Ghirardelli Square) for the “hill.”  Needless to say, it lived up to its billing. It was super hard and super fun! Feats of Endurance Weekly AwardOn Saturday, we had Ray and Sandrine (members of our Strava Club) join us for the sufferfest for no other reason than they were easily convinced. He came in second in the mixed team division at Otillo Catalina with his girlfriend (and stout swimrunner in her own right) Helena Dalivin. He’s raced pretty much every Ötillö race in the series and won Ötillö Engadin in 2019.We covered a lot of topics in this conversation. We chatted about Johan’s athletic background, his time in the Navy as an underwater mine-clearing diver (yes, you heard that right), and how he found swimrun thanks to his main partner Joakim Brunzell. Joakim had raced Ötillö in the early days of the championship and convincing Johan to take on the adventure. When they started racing, they were doing it mostly for fun and then at some point they started to train very hard and started seeing great results. We chatted about his experience racing in Catalina, how he trained for it and where he ranked it in terms of difficulty compared to other Ötillö races (Spoiler alert: They are all tough!). We spent some time talking about swimrun training in general (averaging 20-25 hours a week) and how he sets up his training blocks for the specific features of each course. We also talked about the importance of training the mental game to make sure the mind is ready for the effort required to compete at a high level. We discussed Ötillö Engadin and how he raced in 2019 to win. He shared some funny race stories with us as well. We talked about training in the age of COVID and how to stay motivated when there aren’t races to train for and keep working on the mental aspect of racing to keep sharp. You can follow Johan and Team Simployer on Instagram. That’s it for this week’s show. Hill Law Firm Cases

We recently filed a lawsuit in San Antonio on behalf of a young woman that slipped and fell in a bathroom at an amusement park. The fall did not injure her but the big sharp piece of metal that was jutting out cut her arm wide open. The piece of metal was bent and twisted and sharp. It created an unreasonably dangerous condition on the premises. Transcript: ٍSpeaker: Welcome to Hill law firm cases. A podcast discussing real world cases handled by Justin Hill and The Hill law firm. For confidentiality reasons, names and amounts of any settlements have been removed. However, the facts are real and these are the cases we handle on a day-to-day basis. [music] Speaker: Every case that comes into the office is different. One thing I can tell every client is that almost without fail the insurance company and defense attorneys will make up some excuse and some defense as to why. First, they're not at fault and if they are at fault you're not hurt and if you were hurt it wasn't their fault. If you were hurt and the jury believes you're hurt well you're better now. No matter what the case or what the facts, I can count on one hand the number of times the other side is agreed they're at fault, and they owe money. We're currently working on a case in which a young lady, less than 10 years old, went to the bathroom at an amusement park. Now, this bathroom was close to where the aquatic rides are located so the bathroom would get wet inside. The Aquatic Park knew that. They knew the bathrooms could get wet. It's their duty to make sure that they have a flooring surface that does not get slippery when wet. These flooring surfaces exist and the amusement park knows that. This case was different. When this young lady slipped, her arm hit the side of the bathroom stall. That by itself should be fine. However, the bathroom stall had a piece of metal, a metal flange that had been folded out. Essentially, a piece of metal was sticking out when it should not have. Our client's arm hit this piece of metal as she was falling down. Her slip was due to the slippery floor but her cut that required 28 stitches down her arm was due to this metal flange that inexplicably was bent out facing outward. Sharp, rusty and exactly where somebody who fell who hit this bathroom stall would hit. The insurance company called us and as they do, they had a defense. Their defense was well she slipped because it was wet, and she should've known it was wet. Sometimes I never know if they're making up their defenses, or they just don't understand the claim. I agreed with her that the floor was wet and our client slipped on a wet floor but that doesn't excuse or changes the fact that there shouldn't be a dangerous piece of metal sticking out from a bathroom stall. As I said earlier, they never admit to this but you could tell by her silence that she agreed that they had a dangerous premises defect in that bathroom and that premises defect led to this cut on my client's arm. Now, this young lady got 28 stitches. She'll have a scar for life. She's going to hear the defense say it's her fault for slipping in a bathroom. The slip isn't what caused her injury. That's what premises liability cases are. That if a business wants you to come onto their property and spend money that they have to keep their premises in a safe condition. They have to remedy dangerous defects on the property, and they actually have to inspect and look out for them. They don't get to just hide behind the log and when somebody is injured say, "Well, we didn't know about it". All too often that's the attempt of companies and their insurance companies to try to avoid liability. However, in this case where this young lady slipped and fell in San Antonio and cut her arm open, they're not going to be able to avoid liability with that excuse. [music] [00:04:37] [END OF AUDIO]

Welcome to episode twenty of the Low Tide Boyz, a Swimrun Podcast! On this week’s show we have the CEO of blueseventy, John Duquette. We had a great conversation about the brand and their expansion into swimrun. For shout outs this week we are saying hi to Sossi! She’s a Bay Area swimmer and former triathlete that is a big fan of the show. She recently reached out to Chris to let him know that there was a swimrun team (in blueseventy Alliance swimrun wetsuits incidentally) training at Aquatic Park. While we appreciate the intel it was made funnier by two other of our friends letting us know that they saw a team out there on the same day! This week is also her birthday so HAPPY BIRTHDAY SOSSI!Training continues this week with Chipper starting to ramp back up on volume and Chris keeps reliving the glory days with a lot of volume of running, cycling and cross-training. Make sure to join our strava club to follow along with our workouts and other LTBz fans. Now for this week’s interview. We were lucky to get a chance to talk to John about the history of blueseventy and their development of their swimrun wetsuit.John Duquette started racing triathlon in 1999 and since then has competed in multisport, running and cycling races all over the world. After working at a Seattle running store for 7 years he joined the team at blueseventy in 2007. In 2015 he was named CEO and purchased the brand in 2017. After 20 years in the endurance space he’s seen and experienced enough to tell stories well past last call in the local pub. While he still enjoys racing his mountain bike his primary focus now is making sure his two children develop a love for the outdoors and making sure his dog gets enough exercise to keep him from chewing up his running shoes. The company was actually founded in 1993 as Ironman Wetsuits and did business under that brand name until 2006. The company rebranded as blueseventy in 2006 and John joined the team in 2007. blueseventy is a small company where everyone is an athlete and into open water swimming.Swimrun first came onto the their attention from their distributors in Europe. They started working on a suit for 2 years before they ended up releasing their suit. Mike Orton, a former Olympic swimmer, was the chief designer of the suit that was perfect for swimming and geared for durability. The Alliance Swimrun wetsuit was the result. (You can read our swimrun gear review of the Alliance Swimrun wetsuit here.)The next version in development will have a zipper on the front and the back, sleeves that are removable and re-attachable and better materials. They will also start working on a new performance-based suit. They are also working on additional products that are specific for swimrun like new swim paddle designs and larger pull buoys.John and the folks at blueseventy were cool enough to set up a discount code for our fans to use for 20% off of the site. Just use the code SWIMRUN at checkout for 20% off everything on their site. That’s it for this week’s show. Welcome to episode five of the Low Tide Boyz, a swimrun Podcast! On this week’s show we chat with the San Diego-based swimrun team Sean and Phillip A.K.A., The Swimrun Monks. But first…we wanted to thank everyone that’s been listening to the show and reaching out with questions and feedback. It has been great to see and even though there are people way more experienced than us we’ll keep trying to answer everyone’s questions. We also wanted to give a special shout out to Pepe And Florian from Sweden for being fans of the show and basically becoming our unofficial Swedish pronunciation coaches and meme suggesters. We’ve hit some adversity in training with our collective kids being sick and Chris traveling for work but we’re still getting some good training in. We finally got in a swimrun practice in Aquatic Park in San Francisco which was fun. We practiced transitions and swimming with a tether, which is always good to do before race day on Otillio Catalina. Speaking of Catalina, our guests on the show today helped design the course with the race directors. The Swimrun Monks, Sean and Phillip are pretty bad ass athletes in their own rights and came together in 2019 to race together. Both had interesting journeys to get to Swimrun and were introduced to the sport by Andy Hewitt and Sean Durkin. They raced the Ötillö World Championship in 2019 and have a stacked race schedule in 2020 as they gear up to hopefully race the World Championship again. The Monks talked about what Ötillö races are like in Europe and how big of a deal it was that they were coming to the United States to put on their first event in Catalina. They also helped Andy Hewitt to design the race course and even put in an 11 hour “training day” when they went from Two Harbors to Avalon to see if that was possible. The official race course will start and end in Two Harbors and The Monks run us through what the course will be like. The water will be clean and clear and the running legs will be all on trails with some good elevation. They talked about race strategy and how to work together with their partner to have a successful race day.We talked about finding and training together with a partner. The Monks train together 3-4 times per week and are always trying to get in some swimrun-specific training at least once a week. We geeked out about swimrun gear and talked about shoes (Hoka Speedgoat Evos are their current shows of choice), pull buoys (of course we chatted about buoys), wetsuits (they are fans of synergy wetsuits), shin floaties, etc. Finally, we chatted about how San Diego is a great place to train for swimrun and the cool crew that meets up to do workouts. We really appreciated the guys coming on the show and look forward to seeing them at the start of some of our races this year…and then seeing them at the finish line since we’ll be way behind them on the course! That’s it for this week’s show. From the blog www.blissanddrumming.com, this piece is read by Clementine. She also references www.awakeningthetrueself.com. *** I did love to float on my back and just watch the sky. Once or twice I made it there as the sun was rising or setting and the sky was a marvel. Those moments were worth it all. I didn’t think about what was underneath. I just watched the rose clouds blossom and change, and I allowed that peaceful, floating-on-my-back joy to wash through me. Eventually though, the thought of those fit folks and their steady paces behind me brought that old shame to the surface: I can’t keep up. I’m a failure. Or suddenly, my vision would drop below me, to the bottom looking up, and I would see my body up there on the surface, with all that space and darkness in between bottom and top. I would flail about with a kind of vertigo, panting. I would berate myself, power through, fall into a stroke to mimic the real swimmers out there, finding strength and pushing away the fear for short bursts. Then, the recognition that I was kidding myself would dawn on me. Then, I would paddle in defeat in to shore.

Maybe the problem is we're too interesting. Maybe we don't grab people's attention because our brand of infotainment goes over the heads of most listeners. Maybe we're just intimidating. In other words, maybe it's us. In an experiment to see if we can right the podcast, this week, we welcomed into the bomb shelter, Keith Breitbach (If that indeed is his real name). Keith was evasive about what he did for a living but he's an exceptional podcaster in his own right so we gave him a microphone. The man wouldn't stop talking about Municipal Pier at Aquatic Park. As it turns out, Keith is  the project director for the Committee to save Aquatic Park Pier. Now we're open minded and all that sort of nonsense, but we felt that updates might be more appropriate to start the show. After all, the 2017 Cable Car Bell Contest had just concluded this week so we spent 20 minutes or so talking about Pete's recent contest win, Schwarzenegger's starring role in Titanic, an absent architect, Ed Lee's Mustache (Remember to hashtag), and - because it's podcast gold - Animal Obituaries. So yeah. We're still looking for that audio magic. At least we gave the sponsors enough play.

From the blog www.blissanddrumming.com, read by Clementine. She also refers to this work: www.awakeningthetrueself.com *** I gaze at the water and its relation to the color wheel of sky and watch the peaceful swimmers in Aquatic Park. I remember my numb feet and the shock of cold when I spent some time believing I could be one of them, and still, I envy them. I feel in my shoulders what it must be like to be in the long meditative stroke of their pace. I turn a corner and the sun is the largest thing in view, hanging heavy over the bell curve of Chestnut Street, burning behind the marine layer and spreading a coral light across the screendoor of sky. As I walk my mind drifts, and I come back from whatever thought has pulled me away to sound; again, there are crows. They fly overhead, their sound a fading alarm. I switch up on my attention and start to play with my hearing. My eyes follow the sidewalk as I go in order to listen intently to every layer of sound: the heavy whoosh of the tour bus, the whining of the engine and the sharp cry of the brakes, the conversation of teenagers rising and falling. I imagine I don’t speak their language, and try to hear the true sound of the words beyond meaning. I hear the rising and falling sigh of tires on the street beyond, the rustle of my clothing against my limbs in motion, the sound of the breeze in my hair, the small white-noise buzz in my ears, and still, in a level all to themselves, the crows.

This episode of Color and Sound is an audio journey made from some of the audio "footage" that I've been collecting over the past year or so in and around San Francisco. I'm impressed with the diversity of culture and influences that can be heard when walking around the city. As well, there are a full range of modern, mechanical, and natural organic things to be heard. Some of the clips include: a man named Fagoni from Mali playing what sounds like a Koura in the BART station; chinese drum parade and firecrackers during the Chinese New Year; jazz in North Beach; and the lull of waves from Aquatic Park. Open your ears, mind, and heart wide open w/ your host J*House as we use sound to paint a vivid visual picture. Thanks for listening and don't forget: HELLA GIMMIX SAY WHAT !?! - J*House
