Long before Dana White and his rich friends bought the UFC, and even longer before Dana White was filmed slapping his wife and didn't get any punishment for it, Art Davie and Rorion Gracie had an idea. Eight fighters from different disciplines, coming together like gladiators to finally determine which martial art was the most effective. Most people didn't have any idea who would win, but most people hadn't encountered Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The first UFC was an unorganized, awkward showcase for an idea that would change combat sports forever. First we talk about animals that could end us and Jay Leno's face catching fire. 00:00 - 15:19 Scary animals, Jay Leno's face 15:19 - 1:35:25 UFC 1 If you like our show, please give us a follow on your podcast feed so you don't miss an episode!
In this episode I talk with Sean Wheelock and Art Davie regarding Campbell's McLaren's claims that he started the UFC. Over the years I and others have seen Campbell make these claims and I had been meaning to do a show on this to refute those lies. I had talked to Sean about this in the past and I am glad we had the opportunity to do this show with Art Davie to set the record straight. Sean also helped Art write his memoir which is called "Is This Legal." You can purchase the book on isthislegalthebook.com and Art will personally sign it for you as well. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/toddatkinsshow/message
Robert Lucarelli was a competitor in UFC 2. He lost to Orlando Weit in the first round. The fight was not originally shown on the VHS tape. All that was shown was a replay of Weit escaping the headlock and finishing Lucarelli with a kick to the head following with some elbows. In this episode we talk with Robert about that experience. Later we are joined by UFC creator Art Davie to talk about more old school UFC stuff. A great episode! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/toddatkinsshow/message

A scrappy 19 year old hockey player picks the wrong guy to challenge to a hockey fight, we accidentally skank our way back to the 90’s with a Mighty Mighty trip down memory lane, Plus we talk UFC 236 with Stylebender and Kelvin Gastelum delivering an early contender for fight of the night, and we strap in for this week's show-and-tell that proves two great tastes don’t always taste great together in Xarm.SHOW NOTESA new genre of viral fight clip of the week… Hockey fights! Ovechkin delivers sock classic chin music via a label grab, Zeke skanks his way back to his 90’s ska/punk days and details how he ended up with a Dicky Barrett original (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) and accidentally appeared on their record, we remind our listeners to not rush the stage at a Tool show, Zeke reminisces about shows at the Middle East in Cambridge and his Big D and the Kids Table fandom. We attempt to unpack the unwritten rules of fighting and violence in college and professional hockey, how that fighting style mimics street fighting with collar grabs and lapel work, how mouthguards work by dissipating energy, GO PHYSICS! This Week in Sporps we touch on a bunch of including UFC 236 fight of the year contenders Gastelum vs Adesanya and Poirier vs Holloway, Loma putting on a boxing clinic against a not ready for primetime contender. We fan boi out on Stylebender and his anime background and the tools he’s yet to show, we marvel at Theo Von’s reaction to Dustin Poirier winning the interim Lightweight title, nerdy Stylebender talks some smack to High School Bully Jon Jones.WE GO DEEP on the strangest “sport” to ever materialize in the vicinity of MMA….XARM. From the broken brain of Art Davie came this abomination of an arm wrestling and MMA hybrid. Drawing on inspiration from prison rules basketball XArm dared to ask, “What would happen if I was losing an arm wrestling contest and just wanted to punch the other guys in the face??!?!?! Did we mention the “Idea Lab” he established in the 909?!?!?! We decide to start a new sport that combines WoW and grappling to compete with MMA and esports, hockey is the greatest sport ever but it is not a tv friendly sport even with Fox Trax glowing puck from the 90s, CREDITSFight Stuff is executive produced edited and hosted by Jarrett Sleeper and Zeke Rodrigues Thomas for Mindjam Media. Art Davie is the Creator and Co-founder of UFC, Ultimate Fighting Championship. It didn't start as the UFC we know today. Over the years UFC and MMA have become one of the most popular sports, So we sat Art down to give us the inside on how it all really came to be. MMA reporter Susan Cingari speaks with UFC creator Art Davie about his book "Is This Legal? The Inside Story of the First UFC from the Man Who Created it." In this in-depth interview Art Davie recounts how he overcame tremendous obstacles to start the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Hear how even Chuck Norris turned him down, and why many thought he was crazy for even trying to start the UFC. Get the inside details on how he brokered a last minute TV Deal for the first show. Does he regret selling out after UFC 5? And where does he think the UFC is headed? A fascinating interview with a man who would not take "no" for an answer when it came to making his dream into a reality. My thanks to Art Davie for the interview.
