In this episode I talk with Sean Wheelock and Art Davie regarding Campbell's McLaren's claims that he started the UFC. Over the years I and others have seen Campbell make these claims and I had been meaning to do a show on this to refute those lies. I had talked to Sean about this in the past and I am glad we had the opportunity to do this show with Art Davie to set the record straight. Sean also helped Art write his memoir which is called "Is This Legal." Welcome to the 6th Round Retro Post-Fight Show. This is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events, that span as far back as UFC 1. Join Eddie Mercado & Victor Rodriguez as they relive the Bellator 58: ‘Chandler vs. Alvarez’ event this week, complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. As mentioned, this week we feature the Nov 19th, 2011, Bellator 58: ‘Iron' MIchael Chandler vs. Eddie ‘The Underground King’ Alvarez’ event. This event we’re covering today was a jam-packed nine-bout card, which was a mixed bag with a couple subs, a couple KO's, and a few decisions, along with one DQ. The show went down on SPIKE.tv from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL. The main event that night showcased a battle for the Bellator MMA Lightweight Championship with MMA icon Eddie Alvarez facing then up-and-comer Michael Chandler. Battling it out for the title that night, no one expected them to go the entire five rounds, but what they really weren't expecting was a 4th Round Sub from the young undefeated 'Iron Mike'. Chandler was able to secure the ‘W’ via a wicked Rear Naked Choke to the talented Alvarez. Chandler entered the bout with a 9-0 record at this point in his fledgling career, including his recent victory over Patricky Pitbull. ‘The Underground King’ was entering the octagon after a six and a half month break, on a seven-fight win streak, with a record at that point of 22-2. In the co-main event, we watched Hector ‘Showeather’ Lombard quickly put an end to Trevor Prangley, via Punches at 1:06 of the second round. To refresh your memory, at this point #Lombard had a 31-1 fight record, while this was Prangley's Bellator debut, despite a professional fight record of 24-8 at the time... he never fought in Bellator again after this loss. The rest of the card was pretty decent, with a women's bout between Jessica Aguilar and Lisa Ellis, which was preceded by a sub, a KO, a few decisions and that DQ -- which was due to an illegal kick between Herbert Goodman and Jonas Billstein. The venue consisted of Sean Wheelock & Jimmy Smith at the announcers table, Michael C. Williams as the Ring Announcer, with around 269,000 average viewers on Spike TV. Let’s check it out! If you wanna take a look at the card, complete with fight results, it;s right here: MAIN CARD PPV: 9. MAIN EVENT Lightweight Championship: Michael Chandler DEF. Officials have long dubbed that “playing the game.” It’s no longer viable. Now, fighters must have both hands on the ground — either their palms or fists — to be considered grounded. As always, if a fighter’s knee or any other part of the body except the hands and feet are touching the mat, then that fighter is also grounded. MMA’s Greatest Podcast Extended fingers Eye pokes have been a topic of controversy lately. They are fight-ending, career-damaging illegal maneuvers. Under the original rules, referees could do nothing about it until it was too late and the poke was already landed. The new rules empower referees by making it a foul to extend your fingers outward toward an opponent’s face, which could lead to an eye poke. Previously, a referee could tell a fighter to close his or her hand, but the ref had no recourse — a point could not be taken. Now, it can be if a fighter continues to extend fingers in the direction of an opponent’s face. Female apparel The days of T-shirts, half-shirts and loose-fitting tank tops (sorry, Reebok) are over in women’s MMA. Women must wear either a sports bra or a form-fitting rash guard in the cage. For bottoms, the rules are the same as for men: nothing below the knee, which means no more grappling or yoga pants. Why is this a big deal? Well, loose-fitting shirts are actually dangerous. Fingers and toes can get caught in them. They can slip over a fighter’s head if too loose. UFC fighter Valerie Letourneau recently had an issue when her opponent Joanna Calderwood’s foot pulled down her tanktop with a front kick and she nearly had a wardrobe malfunction. Letourneau covered up and was struck in the head by Calderwood when she wasn’t defending herself. That kind of thing can’t happen in MMA. Grappling pants, which have been used by Marloes Coenen and others, are an inherent advantage. Men have never been able to wear them under the Unified Rules. This is the first time women’s apparel has been standardized in the official rules. Many have asked, Why are a bunch of men deciding what women can wear? That’s a good point. But MMA rules and regulations committee chairman Sean Wheelock consulted with Invicta FC matchmaker and women’s MMA pioneer Julie Kedzie .before writing these regulations. MMA’s Greatest Podcast Heel kicks to the kidneys The last time any of us saw this technique was Royce Gracie vs. Ken Shamrock. It’s not prevalent and the fact there was a rule against it was kind of odd. All other blows to the kidneys are 100 percent legal, but heel kicks (used by fighters holding opponents in guard) were banned. Not any longer. Heel kicks to the kidneys aren’t much more than an annoyance or cause to change positions, as demonstrated Tuesday by MMA legends and Randy Couture and Jeremy Horn. “The kidney strike with the heel is not an effective strike,” Couture told MMA Fighting. “It doesn’t make sense for it to be illegal. We do get hit in the kidneys. I can get in on a shot, if you’re trying to take an opponent down, and he’s perfectly free to hit me in the back all that he wants. It’s not illegal now.” Grabbing the clavicle Very few people knew this was even illegal before. The foul has now been removed. It was unanimous this week at the ABC Conference that no one had ever seen this attack attempted in an MMA fight. MMA’s Greatest Podcast

Art Davie came up with the idea for a little something called the UFC. As an American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt I can tell everyone without a doubt my life would be completely different without Art's creation and hard work. It was an honor and a pleasure to sit down with a true legend and founder of mixed martial arts. His book "Is This Legal" is available on Amazon and anywhere else books are sold so get it. After you listen to this episode you'll be begging for an audiobook version ( just like I was ! ). I am a fan of the end-of-the-year, double-size issues of magazines–full of photographs, lists of the best and worst of the year, notable quotes, and vignettes about the year’s events. This week’s podcast follows in the spirit of those year-end special issues. The episode is thicker than usual, but it is full of colorful observations, reflective commentary, and expert recommendations on the best recent sports books. We call this final podcast of 2011–the Special Year-End Book List. Instead of a single author talking about a new book, we have a variety of guests offering their views on the year in sports and their choices of favorite books. The suggestions come from a range of sports commentators, in the US, the UK, and beyond. We welcome back to the podcast sports historians Kurt Kemper and Tony Collins as well as New York Times writer Don Van Natta. We hear from a Fulbright-winning doctoral student working in sports history, Shay Wood. The episode features the BBC’s Tom Fordyce and Sean Wheelock of the World Football Phone In; the editor in chief of Baseball Prospectus, Steven Goldman; and Atlanta-based sports journalist Wendy Parker. We get recommendations from E, author of the hockey blog A Theory of Ice, and Supriya Nair, contributor to the soccer blog The Run of Play. And offering his views on the significant recent events in American sports is Robert Lipsyte, longtime sports columnist and writer for the New York Times. Our guests have suggestions for books, new and old, in baseball, football, hockey, soccer, cycling, boxing, and host of other topics related to sports. If you are still making your shopping list, or writing your letter to Santa Claus, or simply looking forward to a gift card from that certain online retailer named after a South American river, this episode will have plenty of good ideas for you.New Books in Sports is then going on holiday for the rest of the season. Look for new episodes in January 2012, when we will discuss recent books on Canadian hockey, Japanese sumo, American owners of English football clubs, and the philosophy of being a sports fan.
