Is there any emancipatory potential in playing mainstream video games? And can war games convey pacifist messages? The work of the art collective Total Refusal seems to indicate that the answer is yes. It is so because its members do not play by the rules. They subvert the usual logic of game narratives and show how they are permeated with politics. In this artist talk, two of Total Refusal's members, game theorist Leonhard Müllner and illustrator and cultural anthropologist Robin Klengel, discuss the merging of capitalism with the gaming world and the possibilities of subversion. The talk is moderated by philosopher Václav Jánoščík.Mainsteam video games are the core material of all Total Refusal's work. Besides films, they also create installations. In the one called Flowers Don't Care, for example, they explore the indestructibility of flora in the environments of three different war video games. Another work of theirs, the video installation Featherfall, is based on research on internet forums in which gamers exchange their dream experiences and shows how close dream and game worlds can be in the psyche of video game players. The collective was founded in 2018 and has won several awards, including the Diagonale Film Award for Best Short Documentary and the Contemporary Visual Arts Award of Styria Province.Follow us on  Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.___Je v hraní mainstreamových počítačových her nějaký emancipační potenciál? A mohou válečné hry předávat pacifistická poselství? Práce uměleckého kolektivu Total Refusal se zdá ukazovat, že ano. Jeho členové*ky totiž nehrají podle pravidel. Převrací obvyklou logiku herních narativů a zviditelňují tak jejich politickou rovinu. O splývání kapitalismu s herním světem a možnostech subverze hovoří v tomto artist talku dva z členů Total Refusal, herní teoretik Leonhard Müllner a ilustrátor a kulturní antropolog Robin Klengel.

The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

This week we return to the veteran podcast series with Josh Izenberg and his film Resurface which explores the question, How can surfing change the lives of military veterans? I love this series and the individuals who are working to help veterans heal. Josh (along with his colleague Wynn Padula) is a documentary film director based in San Francisco. His most recent film, SLOMO, was featured on the New York Times, was short-listed for an Academy Award, and was the recipient of the prestigious International Documentary Association award for Best Short Documentary, as well as notable awards from SXSW, Sheffield/Docfest and AFI/Docs. Josh has also worked on commercial documentaries for clients on topics covering auto design, green energy, and race car driving. Struggling with trauma and depression after his military service, Iraq war veteran Bobby Lane wanted to cross surfing off his bucket list before taking his life. Resurface tells Bobby's story and explores the question: How can surfing change the lives of military veterans? More and more research has demonstrated the healing effects of surfing on the brain and body. Organizations like the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, Operation Surf and Surf Action are now acting on this research, turning to ocean therapy to help active duty Marines and vets cope with physical and mental trauma. Resurface focuses on these vets and how surfing and the ocean are helping them heal.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
