The Risk of Pathogenic Aspergillus and Cannabis

Some people in the cannabis industry are questioning whether it is appropriate or necessary to test inhaled cannabis products for pathogenic Aspergillus.  Full disclosure, we at Medicinal Genomics sell qPCR testing kits designed to detect pathogenic Aspergillus on cannabis products. We have also published several resources on our website that describe the potential harms that can be caused by inhaling pathogenic Aspergillus spores and cite with more than 2 dozen Aspergilosis cases in cannabis users.  We have also recommended that states that are considering cannabis testing regulations adopt pathogenic Aspergillus testing. Not because we sell Aspergillus tests, but because we want to protect patients.  By almost any measure, cannabis is one of the most safe and effective medicines available. And in many cases, the potential harms that can come from using cannabis are not caused by the plant, but rather contaminants. And although cases are rare, The documented cases describing Aspergillosis deaths from contaminated cannabis vastly outnumber the published clinical risks for every other contaminant for which the cannabis industry tests. There are no documented deaths for cannabis-derived heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides or incorrect cannabinoid labeling. The same cannot be said  So that is our position, but of course we acknowledge that we are biased, and we are not experts on pathogenic fungi; however, our guest today is.  David W. Denning is a Professor of Infectious Diseases in Global Health at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He was the founding president, executive director, and CEO of Global Action For Fungal Infections, an organization dedicated to reducing the worldwide burden of fungal disease. In 2016, he became the director of the National Aspergillosis Centre in Manchester, which treats patients with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), and led the committee that developed the first CPA guidelines. He chairs the editorial board of a website which focusses on aspergillus and he leads an organisation which provides education on fungal diseases.  In short, Dr. Denning is the leading authority on all things Aspergillus, and we asked him many of the questions that have been debated on social media recently, including:  Should cannabis be tested for pathogenic Aspergillus Should there be an allowable limit for pathogenic Aspergillus? Is Apergillosis only a concern for immunocompromised patients?  Are the number of Aspergillosis cases under reported?  How difficult is Aspergillosis to diagnose and treat?  How ubiquitous is Aspergillus in the air we breathe?  and so much more.  Thanks to This Episode's Sponsor: Modern Canna Modern Canna is regarded as Florida's first medical cannabis laboratory and one of the most trusted third party testing providers in the United States. H., Gago, S. Abstract: Secondary infections caused by the pulmonary fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus are a significant cause of mortality in patients with severe Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19). Even though epithelial cell damage and aberrant cytokine responses have been linked with susceptibility to COVID-19 associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA), little is known about the mechanisms underpinning co-pathogenicity. Here, we analysed the genomes of 11 A. fumigatus isolates from patients with CAPA in three centres from different European countries. CAPA isolates did not cluster based on geographic origin in a genome-scale phylogeny of representative A. fumigatus isolates. Phenotypically, CAPA isolates were more similar to the A. fumigatus A1160 reference strain than to the Af293 strain when grown in infection-relevant stresses; except for interactions with human immune cells wherein macrophage responses were similar to those induced by the Af293 reference strain. Collectively, our data indicates that CAPA isolates are genomically diverse but are more similar to each other in their responses to infection-relevant stresses. A larger number of isolates from CAPA patients should be studied to identify genetic drivers of co-pathogenicity in patients with COVID-19. Copy rights belong to original authors. This week we have a dinosaur episode, but not one you may expect. We're going to learn about some dinosaur fossils found with evidence of sickness to answer the question, did dinosaurs get sick? Yes, they did. Otherwise this episode would be about two minutes long. I know some people get squicked when they hear about illness and disease, so I've also unlocked a Patreon episode about puppies that are born green. Don't worry, the puppies are fine! There's a link in the show notes so you can click through and listen to the episode on your browser, no login needed. Before we get to the dinosaurs, we have a birthday shout-out! Happy birthday to Gwendolyn, who is turning two years old this week! Oh my gosh, Gwendolyn, you're going to learn so many new things this year! I hope you have a wonderful birthday. And now, the dinosaurs. Just a few days ago as this episode goes live, researchers announced that they'd found the fossilized remains of a young sauropod dinosaur. It lived around 150 million years ago in what is now the United States, specifically in southwestern Montana. The fossil was nicknamed Dolly by the paleontologists who studied it. Dolly was a sauropod in the family Diplodocidae, and like other sauropods the Diplodocids all had huge neck vertebrae because their necks were so long. The bones weren't solid, though, but contained air sacs that made the bones lighter and also connected to the respiratory system. This is the case in birds too. Technically the air sacs in the bones are called pneumatic diverticula, but that's hard to say so I'm just going to call them air sacs. When a bird breathes, instead of its lungs inflating and deflating, the air sacs throughout its body and bones inflate and deflate. This pumps fresh air through the lungs and allows the bird to absorb a lot more oxygen with every breath than most mammals can. The bones of Dolly's neck had unusual bony protrusions around the spaces where the air sacs once were. When the paleontologists made a CT scan of the protrusions they discovered they were abnormal bone growths that probably resulted from an infection. Sauropods share a common ancestor with birds and researchers think they might have sometimes caught a respiratory illness similar to aspergillosis [asper-jill-OH-sus], a disease common in birds and reptiles today. Dolly would have had a fever, difficulty breathing, coughing, a sore throat, and other symptoms familiar to us as flu-like or pneumonia-like. Aspergillosis can be fatal in birds, so this respiratory infection might have actually been what killed Dolly. I think we can all agree that the worst symptom to have as a sauropod, whose necks were as much as 30 feet long, or 9 meters, is a sore throat. That's not the only indication of illness in a dinosaur fossil, of course. A 2003 paper published in Nature detailed the results of a study where paleontologists scanned 10,000 dinosaur vertebrae from over 700 animals to see if any of them showed tumors. They found 97 individuals that did, all of them from around 70 million years ago and all of them hadrosaurs. Those are the duck-billed dinosaurs that were common in the late Cretaceous in many parts of the world, especially in what is now North America and Asia.

BH Sales Kennel Kelp CTFO Changing The Future Outcome

GB Talks about aromatherapy, and natural earthen clays, clean water, natural salves, Kennel Kelp, and THE BH Sales Power Trio- to help abate issues ranging in scope to sinusitis, rhinitis, aspergillsis, nasal obstructions , polyps and more how to treat these holistically vs Over The counter prescribed meds!! Brachy means shortened and cephalic means head. Therefore, brachycephalic dogs have skull bones that are shortened in length, giving the face and nose a pushed in appearance. Due to the shorter bones of the face and nose, the anatomy and relationship with the other soft tissue structures are altered; some of these changes can cause physical problems for the affected dog. Mildly affected dogs will have noisy breathing, especially with exercise, and most will snort when excited and snore when relaxed or asleep. Severely affected dogs have more pronounced airway noise, appear to tire easily with exercise, and may collapse or faint after exercise. Other signs may include coughing, gagging, retching, and vomiting. Signs are often worse in hot or humid weather. Dogs with impacts to their gastrointestinal tract may show signs including retching, vomiting, or lack of appetite. Over time, dogs with this syndrome may develop other secondary problems, including inflammation of other structures in the airways. In the long term, the increased effort associated with breathing can put an increased strain on the heart. Most dogs are diagnosed with brachycephalic airway syndrome between 1 and 4 years of age. Both males and females appear to be affected equally. Dogs with multiple abnormalities tend to develop problems at an earlier age. Aspergillosis is an infection caused by the Aspergillus fungus, which is commonly found in the environment in substances such as dust, hay, and grass. The nasal form of the disease is usually seen in outdoor and farm dogs because there more frequently exposed to the substances in which the fungus Aspergillus is found. Birds are the most common source of infection in humans. While the potential to contract aspergillosis from your dog exists, it is less likely if you practice good personal hygiene, especially hand washing and avoid handling any discharges. Treatment for aspergillosis depends on which type of fungal infection the dog has. If the dog has nasal aspergillosis, then an antifungal medication will be prescribed and administered directly into his nasal passages while under sedation --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bhsales/message
