We are back with another episode on fungi. It has been awhile since we spoke on some of our favorite poisonous mushrooms, but this time I wanted to discuss the subject of molds. Toxic black mold has long been a subject of debate within the medical community concerning just how toxic it can be to humans. Certainly, it affects those with allergies to it, chronic respiratory issues such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, and COPD. It has also been shown to cause pulmonary hemorrhage in infants and in animal studies. So let's discuss how mold grows and how it causes symptoms such as headaches, breathing problems, and confusion for some. We also need to take a look at possible deaths that were related to toxic black mold. We are also discussing invasive fungal infections this episode. No, not that bad case of ringworm or athletes foot, although those are certainly annoying. I mean that which infects the respiratory system or invades through broken skin and spreads around causing havoc in our bodies. There have been millions of deaths every year related to invasive fungal infections, many of which are related to immunosuppression such as with HIV or those on immunosuppressive drugs longterm. There are various fungi that can invade the body, but this time we are focusing on Aspergillus (causing aspergillosis). I could not do another episode on fungi without including some fun ones such as whiskey fungus and radiotrophic fungi. Nor could I leave out the subject of one of the most well known video games/shows these days: The Last of Us. Yep, we are also going in to cordyceps and how it hijacks it hosts, leading them to an unfortunate demise so it can propagate more of the parasitic fungi.I promise to end on a fun note though with the cutest blue mushroom you've ever seen. Fungi can be our friends. They're responsible, after all, for some of our favorite foods and drinks, including beer, bread, wine, and cheese. Penicillin, the parent of all antibiotics, comes from the fungal family as well. But fungi can also cause disease in humans, animals, and plants. In this episode of One World, One Health, Dr. Ana Alastruey-Izquierdo, a research scientist at the Mycology Reference Laboratory of Spain head of the mold unit, explains how fungal diseases affect people, how they evolve to evade treatment, and what people are doing that helps make these fungal infections even more dangerous. Climate change and the imprudent use of antifungal treatments on crops are both working to toughen up fungal pathogens, she says. The World Health Organization even released a list of the world's most preoccupying fungal pathogens in 2022. Listen as Dr. Alastruey-Izquierdo tells us why we need more awareness of fungal infections and what we can do to fight them.
The risks from fungal pathogens are increasing. Severe infections used to be rare, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates more than 75,000 people in the U.S. are hospitalized for fungal diseases each year, and the World Health Organization says rates of severe fungal infections are likely to increase as fungi adapt to warmer temperatures and become resistant to drugs. Could a vaccine be the answer? WSJ's Danny Lewis explores how scientists are looking into new ways of reducing the threat from dangerous fungi. It was Summer 2021 when our almost-13-month-old Springer Spaniel, Timber, started throwing up. She was a puppy and had a strong desire to see the world through her mouth so we assumed she had eaten something strange and it would resolve itself. When that didn't immediately happen we went to the veterinary clinic and started the diagnostic process. What we were ignorant of then was the possibility and danger of internal fungal infections.
With the success of "The Last of Us" show, we thought we'd take some time to look at historically important cases of fungal infection. We'll investigate a possible explanation for all those witch trials of yesteryear as well as a common childhood fungal infection that accounted for quite the degree of social upheaval in Victorian England. Also, we'll have our first entry in Mike's mailbag segment. Tune in to see if he gets the question correct. Dr. Scott Roberts, Associate Medical Director, Infection Prevention at the Yale School of Medicine, joins John Landecker on the show to talk about how the real-life cordyceps fungus (depicted in fictionalized form in in “The Last of Us”) poses little threat to humans. However, some fungal infections can do severe damage to us.
Just about everyone has had an unpleasant fungal encounter, usually something as simple as athlete's foot, ringworm, or dandruff. But fungal infections can become much more dangerous and even deadly, especially in people whose immune systems are damaged by another infection such as HIV, tuberculosis, or even COVID-19. Mold species such as aspergillus are in the air all the time and when breathed in by someone whose immune system is damaged, they can cause an infection known as aspergillosis. Another infection, candida auris, spreads in hospitals and can kill. More than 300 million people have such infections and 1.5 million die from them, according to recent estimates. In this episode, Dr. David Denning, a retired professor of infectious diseases, global health, and medical mycology at Wythenshawe Hospital and the University of Manchester, chats with One World, One Health host Maggie Fox about the threat of fungal diseases, especially as people alter their environments.Denning is the founding president, executive director, and chief executive of Global Action For Fungal Infections (GAFFI), which focuses on the global impact of fungal disease.Listen as Dr. Denning describes the need for new, resistance-busting medications to fight fungal infections, better testing to diagnose them, and better awareness of the threat.
Fungus is on us, in us and all around us. HealthCall's Lee Kelso talks with researcher Rebecca Drummond about how fungal infections affect our health, change or bodies, and the growing concern about drug-resistant fungal infections. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today, Ali and Asif discuss the hit TV show ‘The Last of Us' (0:56). Asif starts off by discussing the game it is based on and whether video games can be considered ‘art'. Then the guys discuss the challenges of adapting video games to other media. They then discuss the development of the show and how the creators avoided the ‘video game curse'. The guys then give their thoughts on the show. Then Ali asks Asif about fungal infections (22:13). Asif starts off by defining what fungi are and describes some common fungal infections found on the skin. He then talks about more invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised individuals. Finally, Ali asks Asif if the “zombie fungus” that can infect ants could jump to humans. The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. The World Health Organisation recently released a report stating that fungal infections currently kill around 2 million people a year and that they present a growing threat to human life. For anyone who has been watching HBO's fungal zombie TV series The Last of US this may be cause for alarm. But how big is the threat of fungal infections, how well equipped are we to deal with them and could a fungus ever really turn us all into mindless zombies? We speak to Dr Rebecca Drummond, Associate Professor of Immunology and Immunotherapy, at the University of Birmingham. She tells us about the fascinating lifecycles of fungi, the threats they pose to human life and why we should be doing more to protect ourselves from them. Learn more about your ad choices. New research indicates multiple obscure fungal infections are spreading much further than originally thought. On the heels of the attempted coup in Brazil, former president Jair Bolsonaro remains in the United States. Over in Utah, hapless park officials ask people to stop planting strange electronic rigs in mountains near Salt Lake City (spoiler from Ben: I'm pretty sure this is related to crypto). Some fungal infections, like athletes' foot or thrush, are relatively common and are usually not serious. But in those with underlying conditions or compromised immune systems, fungal infections can be deadly. In recent weeks, the World Health Organisation has warned of the serious threat that fungi pose to humans with a new report and list of priority fungal pathogens. In this episode of Microbe Talk, Charlotte takes a look inside the creeping threat of fungal infections with guests Prof Kevin Kavanagh and Prof Neil Gow.
How To Get Rid of Candida? Today's question is" Hi Nate, found you on TikTok and now watch your YouTube videos. How do you say to get rid of Candida - do you suggest any workout routine and foods ?" Let's start off by covering what Candida or Candidiasis is. It's a fungal infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Some species of Candida can cause infection in people; the most common is Candida albicans. Candida normally lives on the skin and inside the body, such as the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina, without causing problems. So what are the Main steps you can take to overcome Candida? Dysbiosis: Make sure you include beneficial bacteria back into your system and starve out the bad ones. Look for food intolerances: Fungus eats whatever you can't digest and assimilate. Optimize detoxification systems: If one or more of your detoxification systems are having issues, your immune system will have to overwork, which usually allows invaders like fungi to overgrow. Exercise: Start walking daily; make this a habit first, then increase your exercise intensity. I can't tell you how many clients I worked with that suffered from a fungal infection. I believe it is one of the leading causes of ill health. Fungal infections show up in many ways. Here are some symptoms of a fungal infection: Skin itching and eruptions (especially after eating sweets/carbs) Pimples that don't clear Cravings for carbs/ sweets Fatigue Mental Cloudiness Alternating between hard and soft stool and so much more I'll say the most noticeable one for me to see as a coach with my clients is digestive issues. I will immediately ask my clients, "Do you have back pain, tight hips, and fatigue?" They reply with enthusiasm, "YES!" According to the research provided in the book "The Fungus Link," 50% of Americans suffered from fungus infection in 1961, whereas today, 90% of Americans struggle with a fungal infection. Since this subject is not a quick fix, I dedicated an hour of a podcast for you to help you overcome your fungal infection ( if you have one). I hope the podcast helps! Keep me updated:) References Doug Kaufmann - Has a book called "The fungus link" and a website Knowthecause.com Paul Chek, has a program on the Chek Institute website called " Healing fungus and parasite infections." Candida albicans is one of the many types of fungi that live and grow inside most human bodies. Normally, Candida causes no harm; our bodies are equipped with probiotic (or “friendly”) bacteria and immune cells that keep it under control. However, some medications, high-sugar diets, allergies, and other factors can all cause the friendly bacteria to die, leaving Candida free to grow unchecked in parts or all of the body.Sometimes the fungus spreads throughout the entire body in a condition knownas systemic candidiasis. This disorder can produce any out of a wide variety of symptoms and is often at the root of a persistent, mysterious illness. For those with dramatically weakened immune systems, systemic candidiasis is a grave threat, as the fungus can actually poison the blood.
In our tenth episode, host Simran Kaur Malhotra speaks with Emily Rayens, corresponding author of a fungal infections study and a postdoctoral fellow in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. Together, Simran and Rayens discuss the research funding, why fungal infections are important to know about, and anti-fungal resistance.
