Jonathan Howard's latest podcast episode revisits the early COVID-19 predictions of Dr. John Ioannidis, a prominent figure known for his controversial stance on herd immunity and the pandemic's severity. Howard plays clips from Ioannidis' interviews and writings, highlighting significant discrepancies between his optimistic projections and the actual outcomes of the pandemic. The episode also addresses Ioannidis' views on vaccine side effects, contrasting them with the broader scientific consensus. Howard provides a thorough fact-check, drawing from various sources to debunk misleading claims and emphasize the importance of evidence-based approaches to public health. Dr. Jonathan Howard takes a solo dive into the rationale behind some medical professionals' controversial endorsement of natural COVID-19 infection over vaccination to achieve herd immunity. Addressing a query from a listener, the podcast episode aims to uncover the motivations behind such a high-risk strategy, beyond the commonly cited reasons of greed and political influence. Throughout the episode, Howard examines the stance of several respected doctors from prestigious institutions who surprisingly supported the notion of purposeful exposure to the virus among the unvaccinated, particularly children and young adults. This approach starkly contrasts with the global push for vaccination and stringent public health measures. Central to the discussion is Dr. John Ioannidis, known for his early pandemic research that suggested COVID-19's infection fatality rate was significantly lower than initially feared, likening it to that of seasonal influenza. Ioannidis's viewpoints, including skepticism towards lockdowns and the emphasis on the severe potential side effects of pandemic containment measures, are dissected to understand the underpinning logic of the pro-infection movement. Howard critically navigates through Ioannidis's and others' assertions, contrasting them with the devastating impact of COVID-19 as it unfolded, highlighting the dangers of underestimating the virus's lethality and overestimating herd immunity's achievability without vaccines. The episode concludes on a reflective note, pondering the lessons learned from this pandemic approach and the importance of humility and adaptability in the face of evolving scientific evidence.   List of Resources: Perspectives on the Pandemic, Dr. John Ioannidis Interview on YouTube. I have a question that is really bothering me. I try my hardest to do everything as healthy as I can afford and can physically manage, but lately, there's a lot of conversation about the new Fruit and vegetable coating that's called Apeel. I feel that this isn't safe, but what are you supposed to do if the only fruit and vegetable that you can find has that on it?? Have you researched this at all? I'd be interested in what you'd have to say   Type A personality and High-ish fasting glucose Kelly writes: Hi Robb! I'm a fairly new listener (just started listening a few months ago - thank you for your super interesting range of topics!). I had a question after reading one short line in your book Wired to Eat. You mentioned that being Type A or “wound tightly” can lead to higher readings of fasting blood sugar. I personally would describe myself as Type A and always wake up with a rush of energy in the morning and an urge to “get things done” immediately. I also have a history of anxiety, although it's been amazingly managed with switching over to zero added sugar, zero grains and by getting great sleep. Recently I've been experimenting with my blood sugar to get a sense of where I'm at. I test after meals (usually 1.5 hours) and my blood sugar is always around 77-100, depending on if I went on a walk after the meal or not. Typically it hovers on average at 86-90 postprandial. And from my understanding, the goal is to be under 120 by two hours. So these results seem great! But everytime I test my fasted blood sugar around 6am, it's on the “higher” side of normal - 89-95. Could this be due to my Type A personality as you mentioned in your book? For reference: I'm a 5'5” 30 year old woman. I'm very active (walk about 13-15,000 steps per day), go to the gym 4-5 days per week for resistance training. I eat lower carb, I don't eat grains, I get about 130 grams of protein per day (around 90-100 of that being from complete sources), I eat 1-2 servings of low sugar fruit per day, I'm not shy on eating whole fats (but I don't track, so not entirely sure on what I eat per day - but I always eat until satisfied). In the past, my triglycerides were well under 100, usually around 70 ish and my blood pressure is about 100/65. Thank you for your insight! I appreciate the way you reason things out.     Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Proper hydration is more than just drinking water. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), Adults (MIS-A), Neonates (MIS-N), and some Vaccinees (MIS-V). These are all considered clinically distinct diseases; however, the MIS-X diseases have overlapping symptoms and treatments with Kawasaki Disease (KD). MIS-C, MIS-A, MIS-N, and KD occur with increased frequencies several weeks following increased numbers of COVID-19 and for KD other pathogens. The incidence rate for MIS-C, MIS-A, MIS-N, and KD are typically a factor of roughly 5,000 lower than COVID-19 and for KD other pathogens. In this podcast, Dr. Darrell Ricke advances the hypothesis that MIS-C, MIS-A, MIS-N, MIS-V, and KD all represent a novel type of antibody-dependent enhanced (ADE) diseases associated with hyperactivation of granulocytes or mast cells. Symptoms for these diseases overlap those of histamine intolerance (HIT) coupled with pathogen associated symptoms. This ADE model proposes that antibody titer levels higher than primary immune response levels can hyperactivate granulocytes or mast cells to release inflammatory molecules including histamine; MIS-X and KD disease symptoms onset when histamine levels exceed the individual's tolerance level. The proposed ADE model purports that patient treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is successful in treating the MIS-X disease because IVIG compete with pathogen antibodies for binding to Fc receptors on immune cells, thereby reducing the immune responses to the pathogen or vaccine protein. This model is further supported with the vaccine spike protein activating immune cells via envisioned Fc receptor binding. This ADE model proposes additional antihistamine and diamine oxidase (DAO) adjunctive treatments combined with current standard of care treatments for investigation.

She has served on various hospital committees regarding patient safety and cost-optimization. She actively researches operating room cost-effectiveness and waste minimization, most recently publishing a manuscript titled, “Sustainability in Healthcare: A Call to Action for Surgeons and Healthcare Leaders.” Drs. Park and Hoffman begin the episode by asking Dr. Wright to bring to light the overall carbon footprint of healthcare in both the US and the world, as well as what should be included in biohazardous waste containers in the operating room (OR). During this conversation, Dr. Wright demystifies the common assumption that single-use products are related to better patient outcomes postoperatively. The group then breaks down the utilization of reusable, re-processable instruments in the OR, ultimately agreeing upon a reduced carbon footprint when using these products in comparison to those that are single-use. Dr. Wright further explains what surgeons can do in order to mitigate these issues. She discusses various approaches at the individual, institutional, and federal levels. She highlights options that include making conscious efforts to reduce waste, demanding the industry to develop reusable products, and advocate for tighter regulation to reduce carbon emissions in hospital facilities. Throughout the episode, Dr. Wright charges listeners to collaborate with members of their institutions / hospitals who are directly involved in OR waste (e.g. human factors groups, quality and safety officers, heads of linen services) to find ways to mitigate waste and engage in sustainable practices. --- RESOURCES Schwartz KM, Wright KN, Richards EG, King LP, Park AJ. MonkeyPox.  MonkeyPox.  Undoubtedly… when you first heard about it.  You… or someone you love… immediately scratching going ooo ooo ooo.  There are two types of people in this world.  Those who did the ooo ooo … and those who roll their eyes at it… and that's the problem with these scientists. I respect and appreciate the miracles they create in their laboratories. They've cured countless diseases …but they are absolutely horrible at naming sicknesses. MonkeyPox.  Very descriptive it originated in simians… and it causes pox… pus filled lesions on the skin.  But … MonkeyPox. They want to get us on board call it the pus virus… or jungle rot.  Back in the days before scientists were naming diseases we had some good ones.  The Black Plague.  Come onnn.  That's how you do it. But MonkeyPox.  Covid… is just the first letters of the words "CoronaVirus Disease”  They shoulda called it the Bat Plague.  Everybody woulda joined in to fight the bat plague … they'd put up search lights in the night to remind you to mask up.  We coulda skipped all the politics.  But instead….   Covid.  Meh.  But now… MonkeyPox.  I want to suggest… if it's not too late… lean into the part about the pus filled lesions.  Call it… lesionaire disease.  Call it Gorilla Flu.  Anything but a name that conjures up images of a barrel of monkeys.  Which is supposed to be fun.  Right up into you get the disease. Even with the increased risk, heart inflammation is a rare occurrence.”   https://www.health.harvard.edu/covid-19-vaccines     Most people read the headline only or spend about 15 seconds reading an online article never reading the entire thing. Interesting that the data on myocarditis was put as the last item of the article and the top portion only says adverse events are rare and educated on common side effects.   https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2016/06/16/six-in-10-of-you-will-share-this-link-without-reading-it-according-to-a-new-and-depressing-study/     CDC lists rare reactions from covid 19 vaccine  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/safety/safety-of-vaccines.html   "Cases of apparent secondary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) after SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination with both the Pfizer and Moderna versions have been reported and reached public attention. Public alarm was heightened following the death of the first identified patient from an intracranial hemorrhage, which was reported on the Internet, then in USA Today 1 and then in The New York Times. 2 Described below, we have collected a series of cases of very low platelet counts occurring within 2 weeks of vaccination in order to enhance our understanding of the possible relationship, if any, between SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination and development of ITP with implications for surveillance and management." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8014568/ “Adverse events from drugs and vaccines are common, but underreported. Although 25% of ambulatory patients experience an adverse drug event, less than 0.3% of all adverse drug events and 1-13% of serious events are reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Likewise, fewer than 1% of vaccine adverse events are reported. Low reporting rates preclude or slow the identification of “problem” drugs and vaccines that endanger public health.”   https://digital.ahrq.gov/sites/default/files/docs/publication/r18hs017045-lazarus-final-report-2011.pdf   Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare is affiliated with Harvard Medical School and was asked by HHS to conduct this study.   https://www.covidlonghaulers.com https://covid19criticalcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/FLCCC-Alliance-I-RECOVER-Management-Protocol-for-Long-Haul-COVID-19-Syndrome.pdf https://regenerativemedicinela.com/   Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs), present in 1-5 % of healthy individuals, are associated with the risk of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), which is the most common form of acquired thrombophilia. APLs may appear following infections or vaccinations and have been reported in patients with COronaVIrus Disease-2019 (COVID-19). However, their association with COVID-19 vaccination is unclear. Notably, a few cases of thrombocytopenia and thrombotic events resembling APS have been reported to develop in recipients of either adenoviral vector- or mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines. The aim of this review is therefore to speculate on the plausible role of aPLs in the pathogenesis of these rare adverse events.  https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34090785/

This week we're “just asking questions.” You probably recognize that quip from Joe Rogan, of course, but today's focus is another actor and comedian turned popular podcaster, Russell Brand. As with Rogan, who he recently said he loved being compared to, Brand is amassing an increasingly large following—trust us, he'll remind you of that number at the top of every episode—thanks to his high-energy solo rants about the conspiracy of, well, seemingly everything. But what's Russell really saying? We've listened to hours of his podcasts and watched further hours of videos and, to be honest, we can't really tell. Pseudo-spiritual musings mesh with benign revolutionary politicizing with a healthy dose of his live performance schedule and reminders to smash the subscribe button thrown in. Russell is exceptionally good at evoking emotions and firing listeners up with his high-energy, seemingly stream-of-consciousness diatribes, yet when you break down the sentences, you find that he's pretty content-free. Well, except when he's marketing himself, which, at the end of the day, seems to be the only thing Russell is truly interested in.Show NotesHybrid immunity offers increased protection that is longer-lasting against Covid-19 reinfection, studies showRussell Brand: My ResponseRussell Brand: How Did We Miss This?Russell Brand & Nigel Farage clash over immigration on Question TimeRussell Brand: 'I've never voted, never will'Johnson & Johnson Announces Real-World Evidence and Phase 3 Data Confirming Strong and Long-Lasting Protection of Single-Shot COVID-19 Vaccine in the U.S.Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Vaccine Boosting in Persons Already Protected by Natural or Vaccine-Induced ImmunityEffectiveness of the BNT162b2 Vaccine after Recovery from Covid-19Protection against SARS-CoV-2 after Covid-19 Vaccination and Previous InfectionWorld Economic Forum: Digital IdentityWatch Russell Brand Read From A Couple Of My Articles

According to the World Health Organization, if exercise were a drug and everyone took it, it could save 3.2 million lives per year. Lack of exercise or physical inactivity is the 4th leading contributor to death in the world. Physically activity is superior to most medical intervention for the prevention and reversal of disease, (according to research on heart disease, type two diabetes and other chronic diseases). Active living is a human need and the benefits go way beyond weight loss. Does your company have products that were granted emergency use authorization to get to market? Assuming you want to keep those products on the market post-EUA, do you know what you need to do now to prepare? In this episode of the Global Medical Device Podcast Jon Speer talks to Mike Drues with Vascular Sciences about the recently released FDA draft guidance that describes transition plans for EUAs and how medical device companies should be preparing before EUAs are terminated by FDA.Some of the highlights of this episode include:EUA is one of many pathways that medical device companies can use to bring devices onto the market in the United States. EUA is a temporary authorization—not approval or clearance. The FDA has authorized more than 800 EUAs for medical devices for COVID-specific indications. The regulatory burden is lower for an EUA than a traditional approval. The FDA is reasonably expected to give companies a six-month notice for terminating EUAs. However, it takes much longer to get a 510(k), De Novo, or Premarket Approval (PMA) cleared.Quality versus Quantity: What is worse - not having enough ventilators, diagnostics or more ventilators, diagnostics that don't work? Both the regulatory and quality burden is higher for companies in the medical device industry.Certain shortcuts are justified in the short-term but not in the long-term. What companies did before for COVID/EUA medical devices is not enough now. Don't waste the FDA's time. The EUA needs to be a part of a company's overall regulatory strategy to determine how it fits into the bigger picture.Memorable quotes from this episode:“For those of you that have products that went through the EUA pathway to get to market, if you want to keep those products in the market post-EUA, there's things that you should be doing and frankly you should have already been doing them.” Jon Speer “The emergency use authorization or the EUA is one of many pathways to market that medical device companies can use to bring devices onto the market here in the U.S.” Mike Drues “Basically, it's a very, very special kind of pathway. It is not an approval. It is not a clearance. It's an authorization.” Mike Drues “If you're not building a plan, a strategy, and starting to execute that strategy, you're going to be leaving the market with your products.” Jon SpeerLinks:FDA issues draft guidance for transitioning medical devices granted EUAs during pandemicTransition Plan for Medical Devices That Fall Within Enforcement Policies Issued During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Public Health EmergencyTransition Plan for Medical Devices Issued Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Public Health EmergencyWebinar: How Can Medical Device Companies Use the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to Address the COVID-19 Pandemic? The End of EUA Is Coming SoonFDA - Medical Device OverviewMike Drues on LinkedInGreenlight Guru AcademyThe Greenlight Guru True Quality Virtual SummitMedTech True Quality Stories PodcastGreenlight Guru YouTube ChannelGreenlight Guru

In another uproariously virulent episode, we take another dip into life in the lockdown, getting querulous in the quarantine. Shane suffers a major minor meltdown, Jon extols the virtue of bidets and begins to question the strength of his relationship against the constraint, and Michael manages to squeeze out more than several sentences while explaining some myths and fun facts about everyone's favorite outbreak starter kit, Sars-Cov-2. Our heroes complement one another, fail to pronounce defeatist for more than a minute, explain Walgreens' delivery procedure, dub Arizona the Alabama of the Southwest, realize no one in Phoenix knows how to make lasagna, find former paramours on Pornhub, join Spitsters, beat their boom-mics beyond belief, slanderize many members of Damn the Weather, adore tennis, needlessly reference Saliva, and then chat even MORE about Coronavirus Disease 2019.
