All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Mountain View High grad Charbel Aoun Who Founded Nonprofit Named to Georgia Trend's 40 Under 40 list The Georgia First Generation Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Gwinnett County, was founded following a business competition pitch at Georgia State University in 2016. Charbel Aoun and Francisco Martinez, both first-generation college students, recognized the barriers faced by students pursuing higher education and established the foundation to support these students and create a sense of belonging and community for them. To date, Georgia FirstGen has established student chapters in seven Gwinnett County high schools, assisting 750 first-generation students with a 95%+ college acceptance rate. Aoun, who is now a third-year pharmacy student, was recently recognized by Georgia Trend magazine's 40 Under 40 class of 2023 for his dedication to equitable access to higher education and mentorship. STORY 2: Editorial: After a sharp decline during the pandemic, child poverty is soaring again Child poverty in the United States surged in 2022, with more children living in poverty than before the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic had initially reduced child poverty, thanks to measures like the enhanced Child Tax Credit (CTC) program. In 2021, the child poverty rate dropped to 5.2% due to these programs. However, Congress allowed these measures to expire, leading to a child poverty rate of 12.4% in 2022, affecting approximately 9 million children. Poverty negatively impacts children's nutrition, health, education, and overall well-being. The author argues that reducing child poverty should be a high priority and that the U.S. has the means to achieve this goal. STORY 3: AMERICAN DREAM: Honoring Jimmy Carter's legacy of humanitarian work a 'full circle' moment The author shares a personal story of their family's journey to the United States from Cuba in 1980 during the Mariel Lift Boat event. They describe how they were initially scared of Americans but eventually realized they were in America when they arrived in Key West. The author has lived most of their life in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and became actively involved in community service, including joining the Medical Reserve Corps and assisting with COVID-19 responses. They also serve on the board of the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber and the Good Samaritan Health Center of Gwinnett. In 2023, the author and their husband launched the Thumann Foundation to focus on children's healthcare, nutrition, safety, and education. They were selected to the Gwinnett Leadership program Class of 2024 and recently had a full circle moment when honoring President Jimmy Carter's legacy. Break 3: Lawrenceville Harvest Fest – ESOG – Ingles 2  STORY 5: Gubernatorial candidates quarrel over glory for winning opioid settlements Opioid settlement funds, totaling over $50 billion, are becoming a political issue among gubernatorial candidates in several states. Candidates are vying for credit for these funds, even though the settlements resulted from a coalition of attorneys general and private lawyers. North Carolina's Attorney General Josh Stein, running for governor, lists securing opioid settlement funds as an accomplishment. However, mixing politics with these funds raises concerns about their effective allocation and potential misuse. Advocates argue that the focus should be on how the money can be used to save lives and address the public health crisis of opioid addiction, which claimed over 100,000 American lives last year. STORY 6: Buford Middle Competition Cheerleaders Repeat as State Champions Buford Middle School's competition cheerleading team secured their second consecutive state championship victory, competing against other Class AAAAAAA feeder middle schools. The Wolves scored 93.5 points, outperforming Lakeside-DeKalb, the runner-up, and North Paulding, who placed third. This win marks their third state championship in five years. The team consists of sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students and is led by coach Caroline Parker. The achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of these young athletes, contributing to their school's proud cheerleading tradition. Coming up next. A jury has convicted Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Phillip Barker of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, for the 2017 crash that killed a pedestrian. WSOC-TV reports: Jurors have convicted a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who hit and killed a college student in his patrol car. In July 2017, Phillip Barker was speeding while on his way to a call when he hit and killed James Short on Morehead Street near Uptown, according to police. Investigators said Short, 28, was drunk at the time but was walking in a crosswalk. Barker was charged with involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor death by vehicle. He was placed on unpaid leave that year, and a grand jury indicted him on involuntary manslaughter charges. In 2018, he entered a plea of not guilty. Meanwhile, former NC Congressman and Chief of Staff for President Trump, Mark Meadows, could face charges for voter fraud. From WBTV: The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said it has submitted to state prosecutors the findings of its voter fraud probe into Mark Meadows, a former White House chief of staff to President Donald Trump, who was simultaneously registered to vote in North Carolina and two other states earlier this year. The State Bureau of Investigation announced Tuesday that it has turned over the case file detailing its investigation into Meadows' North Carolina voter registration and listed residence to Attorney General Josh Stein's office. Prosecutors with the attorney general's office will determine whether criminal charges are appropriate, the bureau said in a statement. Meadows, a former Republican North Carolina congressman, was removed from the state's voter rolls in April after Stein's office asked the bureau to examine his voter registration records. He had listed a mobile home Scaly Mountain, North Carolina, that he never owned as his physical address weeks before casting an absentee by-mail ballot in the state for the 2020 presidential election. ... Public records indicate Meadows registered to vote in Alexandria, Virginia, in 2021, a year after he registered in North Carolina and just weeks before Virginia's pivotal gubernatorial election in which Gov. Glenn Youngkin became the first Republican to win statewide office in a dozen years. He also registered to vote in South Carolina in March 2022.    Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, North Carolina is one of few states in the South where abortions are legal for up to 20 weeks, but in a press conference with fellow Democrats, Attorney General Josh Stein says that could change depending on which party leads the state after the November elections. Stein said more than 30% of people making appointments at abortion facilities in North Carolina are from out of state. Wednesday, the attorney general vowed to continue fighting to protect laws allowing them to do so. “I have a message for the woman of North Carolina -- no matter what the Supreme Court said in the DOBS case, you have a legal right to an abortion here in this state," Stein said. Stein was joined by two other elected leaders and a doctor in Wednesday's news conference as he voiced concerns abortion rights could be at stake come November elections. North Carolina is one of a few states in the region with the least restrictive abortion laws.  “North Carolina currently stands as a safe haven in the South, but we need to fight to keep it that way," U.S. Congresswoman Deborah Ross said.  READ MORE: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/politics/north-carolina-politics/democratic-leaders-nc-vow-fight-abortion-rights/275-b4c22bd9-0951-4807-8eaf-aa7aaf3197dc Robinhood, a popular app that allows users to buy and sell stock without paying commission or account minimums, is closing its Charlotte office as company layoffs continue.  The Uptown office opened last year, promising to bring hundreds of jobs to Mecklenburg County.
