My guest today is Kate Ostheimer who shares how Ayurveda found her. Originally from Peru, Kate spent many years working in the hospitality industry, primarily for mega-luxury hotel chains. “While they aimed to bring a sense of well-being to their clientele, the essence of wellness was missing.”Currently, Kate is a student and teacher in the Master's Ayurveda & Integrative Medicine program at Maharishi International University (MIU). What she has discovered is that studying Ayurveda is not just about gaining knowledge, but learning how to apply it in your own life. “If you want to have good digestion, you have to eat well every day. If you want to reduce your stress level, you have to practice stress-reduction techniques like Transcendental Meditation (TM) every day. Ayurveda allows you to integrate the knowledge on your own terms. Unlike many wellness protocols, it is not an all or nothing proposition. Ayurveda is a lifestyle that supports both your physiology and psychology.” Through Ayurveda, Kate has shifted her lifestyle from one of high stress, burnout – feeling so tired at the end of each workday that the only thing she could do in the evening was get under the covers of her bed as soon as she arrived home. After two years of practicing Ayurveda, she reports having boundless energy. As a student and teacher of Ayurveda, Kate has discovered the body's power of self-healing. She quickly became aware that everything we consume (not just food) has to be digested by the body-mind – some will lead to sattva (feeling peaceful and balanced) and some to rajas (overstimulated) or tamas (dull, lethargic). A regular practice of meditation has enabled her to enjoy the moment, whatever it may bring, instead of striving to meet goals or live up to someone else's expectations. This has brought great freedom into her days. Most of all, Kate views Ayurveda as “the science of getting to know yourself.” “As your self-awareness grows, you no longer struggle to make healthy choices. Healthy choices become easy.” And the question: “Ayurveda is an ancient system of self-healing. In what way is it relevant to your modern life?” “In every way. That's the magic of Ayurveda. It improves every aspect of your life.” And the question: “Your favorite Ayurvedic product?” I like the Vata and Pitta teas sold by Maharishi Products International (mapi.com). The Pitta tea cools me down and the Vata tea relaxes and grounds me. I also like the herbalized massage oils sold by MAPI – I use them for my daily self-massage -abhyanga – which is the ultimate act of self-care.”
In these changing and challenging times, more and more people are realizing the need for a Spiritual path or anchor. But many are confused as to what Spirituality is. We have images of monks meditating on the mountains or something similar which makes us feel that Spirituality is outside of our normal day to day life. When the truth is Spirituality is how we are living rather than what we are doing. That's the point, if we paid attention to how we are living, we may become aware that we are creating our own suffering. This awareness alone can wake us up to who we are - Spiritual Beings, living a human life. The ancients knew how human life works, how to live in alignment and connection with Source and this knowledge is found in Ayurveda - The Science of Life. In our modern civilization we have moved further and further away from our roots and the rich, time tested knowledge that we have and we are now seeing the results in our times. But the beauty of these times is that it has awakened our need for something more, we are looking for ways out of suffering and seeking Spirituality. In this episode, I will talk about the myths and facts about Spirituality, Spirituality for the householder path and the need for a mentor or Guru I will also introduce to my Spiritual Mentorship Program that begins January 2022. You can get the details here https://www.ayurvedichealingcenter.com/on-line-services/online-courses-workshops/spiritual-mentorship-program/ This program is hugely discounted to encourage participation. I also invite you to join me on a Q&A on this program. Register here Meeting Registration - Zoom Enjoy an additional discount by enrolling before December 26th.

Ayurveda the science of life is an medicine system with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. Ayurveda is heavily practiced in India and Nepal, where around 80% of the population report using it. Ayurveda therapies have varied and evolved over more than two millennia. Therapies include medicines, special diets, meditation, yoga, massage, laxatives, enemas, and medical oils. Medicines are typically based on complex herbal compounds, minerals, and metal substances (perhaps under the influence of early Indian alchemy or rasa shastra). Ancient Ayurveda texts also taught surgical techniques, including rhinoplasty, kidney stone extractions, sutures, and the extraction of foreign objects. The main classical Ayurveda texts begin with accounts of the transmission of medical knowledge from the gods to sages, and then to human physicians. In Sushruta Samhita (Sushruta's Compendium), Sushruta wrote that Dhanvantari, Hindu god of Ayurveda, incarnated himself as a king of Varanasi and taught medicine to a group of physicians, including Sushruta. Ayurveda has been adapted for Western consumption, notably by Baba Hari Dass in the 1970s and Maharishi Ayurveda in the 1980s. Some scholars assert that Ayurveda originated in prehistoric times, and that some of the concepts of Ayurveda have existed from the time of the Indus Valley Civilization or even earlier. Ayurveda developed significantly during the Vedic period and later some of the non-Vedic systems such as Buddhism and Jainism also developed medical concepts and practices that appear in the classical Ayurveda texts. In Ayurveda texts, Doṣa balance is emphasized, and suppressing natural urges is considered unhealthy and claimed to lead to illness. Ayurveda treatises describe three elemental doṣas viz. vāta, pitta and kapha, and state that balance (Skt. sāmyatva) of the doṣas results in health, while imbalance (viṣamatva) results in disease. Ayurveda treatises divide medicine into eight canonical components. Ayurveda practitioners had developed various medicinal preparations and surgical procedures from at least the beginning of the common era. Listen to Renu, an Ayurveda practioner in north India talk about Ayurveda.
Today we discuss the ancient field of Ayurveda and how to heal your own imbalances using it with a gifted practitioner Damin Hagglund. I've experienced Damian's work first hand and it's been a key asset for maintaining my health. We'll cover gut wellness, mind-body connection, martial sciences and his incredible journey. Damian's story begins like an epic Martial Arts saga. At the age of 5 Damian began training by entering boarding school studying under monks and masters. He lived in India for 18 years and trained with many great masters, covering ancient Vedic texts, Wing Chun, Taekwondo, and Aikido. In 1995, Damian met Dr. Madusudan Ray, while on a search for relief from sciatica. After implementing the warrior system of Ayurveda, Damian was able to heal himself and after much dedication and persistence became Dr. Madhusudan Ray's first western disciple. Damian practices a form of martial arts massage called Marma where he uses specific points on the body to resolve any disharmonies. With a no-nonsense attitude and approach, he has dedicated his life to serving others by sharing his experience and knowledge of Ayurveda around the world.

In episode 23 I chat to Ayurveda practitioner Dr. kavya. Ayurveda is an Indian system of medicine which comes from the Sanskrit term meaning the science of life. Ayurveda is a holistic approach to wellbeing which gets to the root cause of disease in the body as opposed to just treating the symptoms. Dr. Kavya is a specialist in Ayurveda Panchakarma, and received her degree from one of the most renowned universities in India, RGUHS (Rajiv Gandhi university of health sciences). She is one of few individuals who is trained in clinical as well as experimental research on the pathology called Hypothyroidism. She has published articles on diseases treated by Ayurveda panchakarma. Also, attended multiple seminars and presented scientific papers on Ayurveda. On 22nd Dec 2017, she won the best paper presenter award in an “International conference on Ayurveda and medicinal plants” held in Colombo, Sri lanka. On 26th March 2019, she received a gold medal and certificate from the governor of Karnataka for acquiring the highest marks in the field of Ayurveda panchakarma. In her own words “The Power of Healing lies within everyone, but very few of them are aware of this power & when you know, it’s you, your mind, your willpower that has the potential to raise this power and make it work for you to start your healing journey." Dr. kavya gives us so much insight into Ayurveda and like me you may be tempted to jump on the next plane to India to find out more after listening to the episode. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Jose: Hello Stephen I'm so glad I found you and your podcast! I was wondering how do I sign up for your upcoming functional medicine education training? I work as a physical therapist and have found myself frustrated at times because I see many patients with issues other than musculoskeletal issues that I can't help. I also know other systemic issues may actually lead to the musculoskeletal pain they may be having. I have become interested in furthering my education with regard to funcional medicine. I would also love to get your opinion on whether you feel it would be a good choice to apply to a Naturopathic Doctor program which I recently have been seriously considering. I would love to better be able to help people and I plan on signing up for your classes if I am allowed to but I wonder whether I will be better able to make an impact with people by actually becoming a board certified naturopathic doctor? Any advice/information you can provide would be much appreciated. Thank You-Jose Jenett: Hi Dr. Cabral, First off, I love every episode and learn s much from you, so thank you!! I really look forward to every episode and have enjoyed the recent ones on ayervedic dosha’s. Much like you, my passion is to help people with their health in a natural Patric way. I’ve been looking at schools on line, but it’s hard to know where to go to get a degree as a natural path of practicianer, that doesn’t take seven years to complete, or break the budget. Can you recommend a great online school? Have you heard of new eden? If so, what are your thoughts on it in terms of achieving my goal? Thank you so much for any advise and help you can give. Jenett Elizabeth: Hi Dr Cabral, I've had a fixed retainer with bonded metal wires for about 7 years now, is it possible that some metals are leaching from the retainer and possibly exposing me to heavy metals? At least once a year I get a professional dental hygiene clean and the fixed retainer doesn't bother me other than the potential heavy metal toxicity. Currently considering having it removed but given the money I spent on correcting my teeth I really don't want my teeth misaligning back to how they were! (don't particularly wish to wear a plastic retainer at night either!). I wondered what your view is on this and whether it's best to have them removed or would a regular heavy metal detox alone be suffice? Ideally I'd simply do a hair tissue mineral analysis but frustratingly I am unable to do that right now. On a side note, I have more or less all the symptoms of low thyroid and some minor melasma (I understand melasma can persist due to excess copper levels). Have been taking gaia herbs adrenal support; understand weak adrenals also contribute to inability to excrete excess copper. Taking multivitamin (Nature's plus source of life gold), milk thistle to help detox the liver along with pure Hawaiian spirulina. I wondered if there is also any potential link with scoliosis and heavy metals? I presume any type of metal in the body would propose heavy metal risk? Look forward to your upcoming show with your biological dentist! Thank you for all you do. (London, UK) Ashley: Hi Dr. Cabral, I love your podcasts, you have inspired me in many ways! I wanted to see if you have any experience with abnormal/irregular migraines? I have had only 3 in my life and they have been very spread out. During the first one I actually believed I was having a mini stroke. It starts with an aura in which a figure in my vision is blurred and I start to feel uneasy and dizzy. Then I get a headache and then I get numbness in my left hand. I have gone to Neurologists a couple of times and they have done many tests, MRI's even had an echocardiogram and they have no idea what is causing this. Do you have any suggestions? It is very scary when this happens. Best, Ashley Evelyn: Hi, I have a history of indigestion as well as heartburn and I get bouts of loose stool where I have to run to the bathroom. I am fighting severe fatigue with a past history of Lyme disease, H Pylori, and Babesia that I treated for a year homeopathically through a specialist in Maine. I have started to take B2 which seems to be helping. I have tried immune system boosters but it seems like those overstimulate my system and cause things to get worse. I have a superb diet and am a pescatarian. I do not eat dairy or wheat and I workout 5-6 days a week doing mostly cardio. I struggle with a hiatal hernia as well (on and off), which my mom and daughters also struggle with. Jim B.: Hi, I struggle with having to constantly clear my throat due to phlegm. I have tried cutting wheat/gluten and dairy out of my diet and that did not seem to help. I am not sure what causes this or where to begin. I also have many small, splitting and cracking cuts at the tips of my fingers to the point of pain and it is much worse in the winter time. No lotion has seemed to help. Swimming in salt water and being in humidity clears it up right away, but living in Maine I do not often have the option and it comes back right away. Lastly, while I am sleeping at night I am constantly jerking and making sudden movements, almost like full body twitching. Looking forward to hearing from you, thanks so much! L Caesar: Hey Dr. Cabral. From Tobago. Great show. It has been a life changer ever since I heard you in Jason Ferruggia's podcast and I recommend it to everyone I know. Rain Barrel Effect book is excellent. Just wondering if you've ever done a show with regard to an ayurvedic take or what natural means are they, if any to boost both male & female virility, enhancement, libido etc with regard to sexual performance and measures to prevent any onset of problems like erectile dysfunction, loss of erection, dyspareunia, loss of sexual desire etc. Used search bar and didn't come up with anything. As always keep up great work. It's making a huge difference worldwide. Katie Meuse: Hi Dr. Cabral & Team! I've been loving the Ayurveda podcasts. I've recently read "The Rain Barrel Effect" and "The Paleovedic Diet", and Vasant Lad's "Ayurveda-The Science of Self-Healing" many times, yet I'm still struggling with choosing the correct foods for my dosha. I'm pretty positive I'm a Vata-Kapha. I'm 43 with no health issues, but want to lose 10 pounds (mostly around my middle). I'm a yoga instructor and have been teaching for 15 years. Although I'm from New England originally I live in South Florida now, and also find it hard swear off smoothies & cold foods when it's always hot here. So many of the vata pacifying foods contradict the kapha pacifying. How do I know which is out of balance? Since I've accumulated a little weight, should I lean toward the kapha diet? I did the 7 day detox a few weeks ago and did lose 3 pounds, but a couple crept back LOL. I'm planning on doing it again soon. Thanks for your help!! In this episode we explore... What it means to live an embodied, elemental life alongside Ayurveda (The Science of Life). Janae's own healing journey from chronic illness. How she believes healing is within us all, how we can awaken our inner healer and how we can work with our body to support that. How the trauma of menarche (a woman's first period) can leave lasting effects on our menstrual cycle. How we are living in an ojas (vigor and vitality) depleted society, and simple practices we can do for ourselves to replenish this. How to introduce simple ayurvedic practices to everyday life. In this weeks episode, we speak with Jaisri M Lambert about Ayurveda itself, and how it is an ancient and yet directly relevant approach to attaining and maintaining health and happiness in daily life. “According to Ayurvedic principles, by understanding oneself, by identifying one’s own constitution, and by recognizing sources of doshic aggravation, one can […] The post Ayurveda “The Science” or Wisdom of Life – with Jaisri M Lambert appeared first on Conscious Living Radio.

Ayurveda is a system that produces a wonderful quality of life for everyone. Based in ancient teachings from 1,000's of years ago - the Ayurveda system takes into account you as an individual with a spirit, soul and a body. Learning how to intergret these different parts of yourself and learning how to live in harmony with all of the other systems and cycles of nature, and the other kingdoms of the animals, plants, minerals, space, the waters of the earth, fire and air produces this quality of life that cannot be realized otherwise. Tune in as I discuss the Ayuirveda system with Dr. Faez Mashood. And also I will share my success story. s
