Dylan Smith of Vital Veda joins Mason on the show today for an expansive conversation around the Vedic sciences, and how to use the natural lores on which these were founded to formulate your life from a place of flow rather than friction. Dylan is certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and holistic health educator who uses the vast depth and breadth of his knowledge to help, to heal and to teach. Drawn to the craft through his own initiating experiences of Panchakarma, Dylan's path is one of well trodden embodiment. Dylan unfurls his knowledge and wisdom in a gentle and considered way, sharing how the practical application of this ancient philosophy can assist in the very tangible material decisions one is required to make in their every day life, such as where to live, where to work, how to eat, when to evolve a relationship and more. In Ayurveda it is said that the number one quality for successful healing is to surrender to the hands of the healer; the physician. Dylan shares the concept of hasta vasti; the power of the hand that heals, explaining that it is not so much the herb or the method that elicits the medicine but the that hand it comes from. In a contemporary climate where regulators and governing bodies have the dominion to inhibit and repossess the credentials of a practitioner based solely on their capacity to concede to the law and order of obligation, what is left for the sovereign individual in which these choices don't align? The hands the heal. What Dylan is speaking to through the lens of hasta vasti is the inherent power of the healers touch, the aura, the energy, life force, Prana, Qi or seeming magic that works through the body of the practitioner as a conduit of harmony. When the apparatus is taken away and the herbs held hostage to capitalistic greed, what's left over is the craft, the heightened sensory system, trained meticulously to perceive, to feel, to hear and to know. There is so much potency in this, this is nature based wisdom, universal to all beings. The hands of the healer could be the hands of the practitioner you hold dearly in esteem, these hands could also belong to you, perhaps the most powerful healer of all; the self. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation, may it bring inspiration and insight. Dylan & Mason discuss: - How to use the Veda's to manufacture your life in alignment with the universal flow. - Vedic Astrology. - Yin and Yang through the Vedic lens, and how this philosophy can be applied to the practicalities of being and doing. - The inception of Ayurveda and Chinese medicine into Western allopathic medicine. - The future of holistic health practice beyond regulation. - Dhanvantari and initiation of the Ayurvedic healer. - The guru/disciple relationship. - Karma and trust as key elements in healing. - Jyotish herbology. We're delighted to welcome Myra Lewin of Hale Pule back on the show today to share her insightful dialogue in the realms of Ayurveda, yoga and business with Mason. Myra was first on the show back in February 2020, a moment in time we all look back on now with a pivotal understanding. Back then Myra spoke with Tahnee about the foundational aspects of yoga and Ayurveda and how these tools can be used to create harmony in one's body and life. Today Myra connects with Mason about the importance of "the why" when engaging with a personal or vocational endeavour and how her offerings through Hale Pule have changed since the pandemic when the world went primarily online. Myra speaks to the Ayurvedic approach, of interacting with the body as a self correcting organism, and using herbs and practices to support the body's natural cyclic functions and the inherent intelligence embodied in each of its cells. Originating from a previous life lived through the lens of the scientific medical model, Myra shares how her experiences with Ayurveda shaped her holistic understanding of the body, mind, spirit, and being as a whole, and how the linear workings of her mind are continually cracked open through the practice of Ayurveda and its governing principals. Myra and Mason explore how many of the premier herbs of the Ayurvedic cannon are used in a casual and one dimensional fashion, especially in the contemporary field of health, and how this approach can often mask the core issue rather than resolve it, as traditionally practised via the ancient roots of this highly revered system. Sharing their resonance for embodied health in an explorative, grounded and charming conversation, the pair provide us with deep insight, wisdom and light hearted sentiment as they explore the many similarities that Ayurveda and Taoism share. Take a moment, take a breath and settle in for the sweet journey this episode takes us on. A truly enjoyable listen. P.s Myra will be hosting an incredible 3 day event focusing on Ayurvedic wisdom for anti ageing and longevity in Sydney later this year, click here to view the entire program. PLUS SuperFeast will be partnering with Hale Pule for a special in person offering in the Northern Rivers on 11th November, mark the date in your calendar and stay tuned for more details. Myra & Mason discuss: - The power of "the why" in keeping focus on any endeavour; business, personal or otherwise. - The Ayurvedic approach to health and healing. - How the practice of Ayurveda challenges the linear based thinking present in many Western models of health. - The importance of laughing at yourself, embracing mistakes and honouring the merits of both the ego and the higher self. - How to begin your journey with Ayurveda and view health through the elements and doshas. - Ayurvedic herbalism. Podcast Intro: Our habits begin with the things that our family does. Eventually, those things are firmly embedded. To truly make a difference requires time, focus, and a shift in energy inwardly. Reconnecting with our bodies is a must. The process by which behaviors become habitual is known as habit formation. Habits can arise without a person's knowledge, but they can also be cultivated—or eliminated—to better suit one's particular objectives. But how does one go about changing a bad habit? With acclaimed yoga teacher and author Myra Lewis, this episode will discuss how to nourish your holidays through a holistic approach. What you'll get out of tuning in: How our Habits are influenced by our family and environment How our Perspective in Life is essential to our general well-being How our Negative Thoughts generate negative vibrations into our Bodies Links/CTA: Hale Pule - Ayurveda & Yoga Facebook: Hale Pule Ayurveda and Yoga Instagram: @hale_pule Youtube: @yogaandayurveda Blog: Staying with your Path Blog: Nourishing yourself in whole and healthful ways Podcast: Hale Pule Highlights: Cate discusses a workshop on Emotional Eating Cate talks about self-healing before the Dharma. Cate explains how classic holiday recipes have been extensively replicated and have grown unhealthy. Cate discusses her wrong pattern of overeating and then exercising. Timestamps: [06:03 - 06:43] “What we call cause and effect is we take action and there's a result. And we've been taught to pretty much ignore that when it comes to everything outside of us. I'm going to do these things because it seems pleasurable. But tomorrow, I'm going to feel like crap. The foundation of this is we start to see that there's cause and effect. I have control over that, or I can have control over that. ” [15:52 - 16:20] “Follow your path rather than following everybody else. And it doesn't mean you can't be with them. Perhaps, it takes some inner focus to do that, but then you show up as a light in that environment. That's very different from just being part of the crowd and going along with whatever's happening there.” Quotes: "The most essential thing is that we reconnect with our bodies. Many of the things we think, "Oh, it's my body doing this or my body doing that," are actually done by our mind." "The level of impressions produced, or wounds that occur in the early stages of life is the most powerful piece in terms of modifying our relationship. That relates to our bond with our mother. And whether you think it's amazing or dreadful, it's simply the nature of it, and how you're reacting to it at this time in your life." "You'll always find out when there's a bad motive. Something that will lead us away from ourselves rather than toward ourselves. And so you have all that success on the surface, and you're empty on the inside." Ayurveda originated several thousand years ago in India and is an alternative/integrative form of healing. Special guest Myra Lewin explains very clearly the origin, what the science and healing is about and how food is a major component of how Ayurveda helps address the well being and vibrant health of an individual. In Ayurveda, food combining guidelines stipulate what foods go together and what may be eaten together; what cannot be had together to avoid toxin buildup which may result in disease. How one needs to eat for robust health and wellness is something every listener can take advantage of, from this episode.Myra is a highly experienced Yogini, certified in Ayurveda and Yoga with 30 years of experience and teaching more than 50,000 hours of yoga. Join me with Myra Lewin of Hale Pule Ayurveda & Yoga as we explore her book and 12-week workshop, both titled Freedom in your Relationship with Food. Myra is an Ayurvedic practitioner and Yoga Therapist. She is the author of two books: Freedom in your Relationship with Food and Simple Ayurvedic Recipes. She also produces two podcasts: Everyday Ayurveda & Yoga at Hale Pule and Spark your Intuition with Hale Pule. The word "freedom" is important. It leaves a very different imprint than the term "disordered eating." Myra explains that our relationship with food is very much connected with mother, mother earth and perhaps our birth mother. Ayurveda believes food is our nourishment, but we need to be able to digest it. Food reflects our relationship with ourselves and all of nature. The relationship between how we interact with our world and the food we eat is a direct one, i.e. if we have a scarcity mentality, this will be reflected in our relationship with food. Changing any relationship starts with practicing self-awareness, giving credence to cause and effect. Our ability to digest food is directly connected to how we feel. If we are always moving quickly, we are not attending to our underlying emotions. Taking pause to look at the whole picture is required. Only then do we begin to realize it's not about the food, i.e. "that food is unhealthy." It's about how we eat. The Western approach to eating disorders emphasizes that control is often a root case. Myra uses the words “surrender” and “control” as being instrumental in healing our relationship with food. In most cases, we are confused about what we can control. As we start to cultivate self-awareness, we become willing to release our old sense of self and inquire: what is my true self, what kind of actions am I willing to take, can I trust. We all have impressions, referred to as samskaras, habitual patterns that no longer serve us. Surrender is the process of letting go, letting go of these impressions and clearing their charge in our lives. With regard to the mind, Ayurveda goes a step further than Western psychology. While the Western approach promotes awareness, it doesn't necessarily have methods that enable prana – the energy in the body to move. When prana is blocked, i.e. holding resentments can block prana, an unhealthy relationship with food can develop. When we work with the breath and mind, we begin to move prana and spark healing. Ayurvedic principles can be applied to any cuisine. Myra's approach to cooking and teaching focus on creating balance and improving agni. She emphasizes a tri-doshic meal – a balanced meal for all doshas. Herbs and spices import the six tastes and balance the meal. When we are out of balance, we tend to eat too much of one taste – which can create more imbalance. Our linear approach to food presumes that if something is “good for us,” we need more of it. We don't need a lot of herbs and spices in one dish. Myra encourages clients to work with three to start with. Cooking is an alchemy; the cook is an alchemist. When we incorporate the six tastes in a meal, we feel well-nourished and unhealthy habits begin to drop away. In addition to the upcoming program, Healing your Relationship with Food, Hale Pule also offers a 21-day Agni Therapy and a 14-day Ayurvedic Chef Training. Website: https://www.halepule.com/
