The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe the daughter of Aaron Burr, sir, but they don't teach you about this in Hamilton. We breeze through the late 1700's in to the early 1800's as we learn all about the close relationship between Aaron Burr and Burr's daughter, Dear Theodosia. But Burr had to flee the country and when Burr returned to America, Theodosia faced some difficulty in returning to her father. The remnants of that difficulty may still plague the Bald Head Island shoreline today. There be pirates in these waters, Jaaaaaaaack. There be spirits in these waters, Jaaaaaaaaaack. Alongside that we ponder who shot first aka who was the Han between Burr and Alexander Hamilton? We also question whether there is an official honeymoon record? Are Moonwalker and Greybeard married? Change the name and nobody knows… All that and more on this week's file. October 22nd: Davina Buff Jones Dies(1999) A small sleepy town doesn't seem like the kind of place to have a murder, let alone a police cover-up. On October 22nd 1999 a police officer was found dead while out on patrol in the sleepy little island just off North Carolina. A death, or murder, that many believe is part of a march larger, and much more dangerous, cover-up by police and the District Attorney. https://www.forbes.com/sites/crime/2012/06/25/analysis-of-13-year-mysterious-death-of-cape-fear-police-woman/?sh=304e610a6ebd, southernfriedtruecrime.com/38-officer-davina-buff-jones, https://www.charlottemagazine.com/shadows-by-the-sea/, https://www.wect.com/story/3558006/case-may-re-open-for-police-officer-killed/

At first glance, the name Theodosia pops out in the eyes of many broadway-enthusiasts. With the success off the widely popular musical Hamilton, “Dear Theodosia” stood out in a soundtrack full of instant classics. The ballad told of a love between a father and his daughter, but many people have never explored the tragic life of Theodosia Burr. Presumed dead after being lost as sea, many theories started to rise surrounding her mysterious vanishing. Her ghost is said to haunt her plantation The Oaks, along with the Outer Banks, Richmond Hill and Bald Head Island, where it is said that her spirit is chased by three headless pirates. The questions surrounding her disappearance seem to outnumber the answers. That may be the most tragic part of this entire tale. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/scspookshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/scspookshow/support

In honor of today's start of the Badwater 135 I can't think of any better guide for mile #28 than to replay the episode with Bob Becker. For those that may have missed it Bob was my guide for mile #10. For those not familiar with the Badwater 135 it is called the World's Toughest foot race. It covers 135 miles from the Badwater Basin in Death Valley which marks the lowest elevation in North America at 280 feet below sea level and finishes at Whitney Portal at 8300 feet which is the trailhead to the Mount Whitney Summit. Runners will traverse 3 mountain Ranges with a cumulative ascent of 14,600 feet and descent of 6100 feet. What is remarkable about this race is temps in Death Valley for this event are forecast for 114-117 degrees. This year it will involve 84 runners from 7 countries including 29 states. The roster is made up of 60 men and 24 women, with 36 of the participants are over the age of 50, there are 10 in the 60-69 age group and 2 over the age 70. Bob will be this years oldest participant at age 76. Bob has been a part of this race for total of 14 years either crewing for another runner or running the event. This is his 4th year running the event. As you listen I ask you to think how you will spend your days at age 76. When it comes to ultra running Bob's Bio is incredible. On September 2, 2019, Bob was the overall winner and broke the race record at A Race For The Ages ("ARFTA") in Manchester TN. Bob completed 230 miles in just under 74 hours, besting the old record of 228 miles in this fixed time race. To level the field for older athletes, runners at ARFTA are age-handicapped: competitors run for the number of hours equaling their age to see who will complete the greatest number of miles. In November, 2018, Bob won the "Masters" award at the Azalea 12/24 Hour race in Palatka, FL, completing 54+ miles in 12 hours. In October he finished the 50-kilometer race at PALM100, and in March 2018--and again in March, 2019--completed the 51.4-mile race at Badwater Cape Fear on Bald Head Island, N.C. https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a20849297/70-year-old-becomes-oldest-to-complete-292-mile-badwater-double/ Full bio: https://www.keys100.com/index.php/more/about-the-race-director Bob is the Race Director for the Keys 100 and Everglades Ultras Trail Race "The KEYS100 Experience": https://youtu.be/6hOza0OOS8s https://keys100.com/the-experience Race web page is on the keys100.com

Listen to the podcast with this player: On one side of North Carolina's Bald Head Island, the Cape Fear River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. On the other, treacherous sand bars known as the Frying Pan Shoals stretch to the south for about 30 miles into the ocean. The island's first lighthouse was established in 1794. The original lighthouse was soon threatened by erosion, and it was discontinued in 1813. A new 110-foot-tall lighthouse was completed in 1817, but it was soon realized that it wasn’t bright or tall enough to guide vessels past the dangerous shoals. A new lighthouse, known as the Cape Fear Light, was built on the island in 1903 to help mariners negotiate the Frying Pan Shoals. Cape Fear Lighthouse has since been demolished but Old Baldy remains standing as the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. Bald Head Lighthouse, aka Old Baldy, North Carolina. Frying Pan Tower was once the first light of the Cape Fear, serving as a light station 32 miles off the coast of Southeastern North Carolina to warn mariners of the dangers of Frying Pan Shoals. Today, it has been retired by the U.S. Coast Guard and is well past its prime, but a group of owners and volunteers are working against rust and time to preserve and restore it for the future. This special episode was recorded live on deck of Frying Pan Tower, featuring a interview with former owner and current non-profit director Richard Neal, who talks about buying the tower a decade ago, how they are working to preserve the structure and what life is like on the 135-foot tower. This episode is about Officer Davina Buff Jones who died while on duty on Bald Head Island. Then why was her death ruled a suicide? Lets find out.
For 202 years, Old Baldy lighthouse on Bald Head Island has stood as a product of a different time in the Cape Fear region but an everlasting reminder of its history. But Old Baldy is just one of three lighthouses that have stood on the island to help direct mariners around the dangerous shoals and into the Cape Fear River since 1795. Two have since been lost to time, but each lighthouse has helped shape the identity of the island and the development of the region. This week's episode traces at the history of all three lighthouse with the special guest Travis Gilbert, the historian for Old Baldy Lighthouse. In 1999, a dedicated rookie police officer on the luxury island of Bald Head, North Carolina, is shot in the back of the head while on duty. Emergency officials destroyed the crime scene and all evidence and the DA quickly closed the case, ruling it a suicide. Her family sued in civil court to get the ruling changed to homicide and the case is still open to this day. October 22nd, 1999. Bald Head Island, North Carolina. A police officer radios dispatch to report that she has stopped three people. Soon after she is heard telling one of them that there is no reason to have a gun on the island. A loud squelch noise will be heard followed by radio silence. By the time another officer arrived on scene it was too late. Officer Jones was dead. Her death was ruled as a suicide. A single shot to the back of her head with her own service weapon had ended her life. Rumors of a coverup seem to explain why what appears to be a murder would be interpreted as a suicide by officials. But was it a murder? Could officer Jones have staged her death so that her family would receive money? Or could there be another explanation? We break this case down using the known facts and even include a piece of evidence that you may never have heard about until now.

Forming North Carolina's most southeastern tip at Cape Fear, Bald Head Island presents a stunningly diverse geography of salt marshes, sand dunes and old growth maritime forest. A little over 25 years ago conservationists and developers worked together striking a balance between what people need to thrive in a subtropical environment and what the islands need. Explore the interplay of people and place in this unique coastal barrier system.

They also come for another purpose...to sell some of their paintings in order to help disadvantaged artists through a Dutch non-profit called Paint a Future. Meet these talented artists and see why Bald Head Island keeps beckoning their return.
