Derrière ce tube incontournable de Supertramp se cache une histoire mouvementée qui a marqué la fin d'une ère pour le groupe. Dans cet épisode, découvrez les coulisses de la création de It's Raining Again, l'un des titres phares de l'album Famous Last Words, le dernier album de Supertramp dans sa composition originale. Alors que les deux leaders du groupe, Roger Hodgson et Rick Davies, avaient l'habitude de composer ensemble et de se mettre d'accord sur la direction artistique, les choses se sont gâtées pour cet ultime projet. Hodgson voulait en effet terminer sur une note pop tandis que Davies souhaitait revenir à leurs racines progressives. Tiraillé entre ces deux visions, l'album en a porté les traces, devenant un savant mélange des deux styles.Finalement, Hodgson a quitté le groupe juste après la sortie de Famous Last Words, regrettant amèrement d'avoir cédé sur ses positions créatives. C'est pourtant lui qui a composé It's Raining Again, une chanson aux accents mélancoliques inspirée par la perte d'un proche.Au-delà de cette toile de fond tumultueuse, vous découvrirez également une anecdote fascinante liée à la fin de la chanson, où une comptine bien connue vient subtilement s'immiscer. Rick Davies hat Supertramp maßgeblich geprägt – mit der tieferen der beiden Männerstimmen und seinem speziellen Anschlag auf dem Wurlitzer-Piano. Schon als Kind war er musikalisch aktiv – erst am Schlagzeug, später an diversen Tasteninstrumenten. Von ihm stammen einige der erfolgreichsten Supertramp-Songs. Kompositorisch und stimmlich ergänzten sich Davies und Hodgson, aber es gab auch erhebliche Differenzen. Der Song stammt von dem sechsten Album der Band „Breakfast in America“, das zwei Grammys gewann. Einen davon für das beste Cover. Als Roger Hodgson die Band verließ, machte Davies weiter und war bis 2010 mit seinen Bandkollegen auf Tour. Rick Davies starb am 6.9.2025.

By 1973, after two albums, it looked like the career of Rick Davies and Supertramp was over. But with the addition of new members, Supertramp set about creating an album that would turn their fortunes around and that would go on to be recognized as an all-time classic. In remembrance of Rick Davies who passed away on September 6, 2025, at the age of 81, Randy Renaud revisits the story behind that brilliant album on the Chronicles of Rock.

No sé si cuando eras niño te gustaba ir al colegio. La mayoría, creo, que preferiríamos tener vacaciones perpetuas. Pasamos muchos años de nuestra infancia y adolescencia en el sistema educativo. Y como todo lo que se hace por obligación, no suele ir acompañado de mucho entusiasmo, pero es un tiempo que conforma tu vida. La novela de James Hilton (1900-1954), "Adiós, Mr. Chips", es una deliciosa historia, llena de humor y ternura, sobre un maestro de un colegio privado británico, que se siente frustrado por no haberse podido comunicar como quisiera con sus alumnos. El libro apareció primero como suplemento de un periódico evangélico en 1933, pero será cuando el escritor se establezca en Estados Unidos que adquiera gran popularidad al aparecer en la revista The Atlantic en 1934. Fue llevado dos veces al cine, una en el 39 y otra en el 69, por Sam Wood y Herbert Ross, respectivamente. En este programa de radio "Al Trasluz" escuchamos fragmentos de la obra, leída por Eugenio Barona y escenas de las dos películas, comentadas por José de Segovia con el fondo instrumental de la banda sonora original de John Williams para el filme protagonizado por Peter O´Toole y de Richard Addinsell para el que hace Robert Donat. Suena también la música de Michael Kamen para "Profesor Holland" (Mr. Holland´s Opus 1995), James Newton Howard para "El Club de los Emperadores" (The Emperor´s Club 2002) y Maurice Jarre para "El Club" o "Sociedad de los Poetas Muertos" (Dead Poets Society1989). Escuchamos las canciones de Petula Clark para la película que coprotagoniza con O´Toole en el 69 (Goodbye, Mr. Chips), después del himno "Jerusalem" con lo arreglos de Elgar para el texto del poeta romántico William Blake. Luego oímos el tema dedicado al "Colegio" del grupo Supertramp (School 1974) por el ahora fallecido Rick Davies y la canción de Sting para The Police sobre sus experiencias de maestro de escuela con adolescentes, al intentar que no se acerquen demasiado a él (Don´t Stand So Close To Me 1980). This SPECIAL EPISODE is a tribute to RICK DAVIES, who died this past week at age 81. Rick was the founder of, and one of the two lead singer-songwriters of, Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. In 1979 the band hit their zenith with the album “Breakfast In America”, which sold over 20 million records.Rick played keyboards and wrote several of the band's greatest hits. His songs had a blusier, edgier sound to them than those of Roger Hodgson, the other lead songwriter, who wrote more pop oriented songs which he sang in his high tenor voice. Together, however, these two guys provided the yin and yang of Supertramp which defined the band and made them a success.Rick's first band, called Rick's Blues, included Gilbert O'Sullivan on the drums. In August 1969 he placed an ad in Melody Maker seeking to form a new band, and Roger Hodgson auditioned and joined. Supertramp's first successful album was 1974's “Crime Of The Century”. It contained “Bloody Well Right”, Rick's first hit.  The band's breakthrough album was “Breakfast In America”, which contained another Davies hit, “Goodbye Stranger”. Like most rock bands, however, creative differences and jealousies eventually split up Supertramp. When we heard about the death of Supertramp founder Rick Davies a few hours ago, we wanted to pay tribute to him. Rick and the rest of the group were no strangers to us. Since Canada was very instrumental in the story of Supertramp from the mid ‘70s on, they visited our CHUM-FM Toronto studios often. As a Supertramp fan, I am intrigued by the dueling personalities of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. By 1979, when they were promoting Breakfast In America, they admitted that they hadn’t worked closely together since Crime Of The Century, which in my opinion still stands as a masterpiece. To hear more from Supertramp, check out episode 606 when we hear from both Rick and Roger as they deal with their fracturing partnership. Today I discovered an interview that I hadn’t previously heard. It’s from 1988 and Supertramp is still coming to terms with the departure of Roger Hodgson. But we also hear Rick’s fierce determination to carry on and to continue making music that’s meaningful to him… whether it sells millions of copies or not. In this chat, they are talking about their 1988 tour and the most recent (and final) Supertramp album, "Free As A Bird".
