This SPECIAL EPISODE is a tribute to RICK DAVIES, who died this past week at age 81. Rick was the founder of, and one of the two lead singer-songwriters of, Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. In 1979 the band hit their zenith with the album “Breakfast In America”, which sold over 20 million records.Rick played keyboards and wrote several of the band's greatest hits. His songs had a blusier, edgier sound to them than those of Roger Hodgson, the other lead songwriter, who wrote more pop oriented songs which he sang in his high tenor voice. Together, however, these two guys provided the yin and yang of Supertramp which defined the band and made them a success.Rick's first band, called Rick's Blues, included Gilbert O'Sullivan on the drums. In August 1969 he placed an ad in Melody Maker seeking to form a new band, and Roger Hodgson auditioned and joined. Supertramp's first successful album was 1974's “Crime Of The Century”. It contained “Bloody Well Right”, Rick's first hit.  The band's breakthrough album was “Breakfast In America”, which contained another Davies hit, “Goodbye Stranger”. Like most rock bands, however, creative differences and jealousies eventually split up Supertramp. When we heard about the death of Supertramp founder Rick Davies a few hours ago, we wanted to pay tribute to him. Rick and the rest of the group were no strangers to us. Since Canada was very instrumental in the story of Supertramp from the mid ‘70s on, they visited our CHUM-FM Toronto studios often. As a Supertramp fan, I am intrigued by the dueling personalities of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. By 1979, when they were promoting Breakfast In America, they admitted that they hadn’t worked closely together since Crime Of The Century, which in my opinion still stands as a masterpiece. To hear more from Supertramp, check out episode 606 when we hear from both Rick and Roger as they deal with their fracturing partnership. Today I discovered an interview that I hadn’t previously heard. It’s from 1988 and Supertramp is still coming to terms with the departure of Roger Hodgson. But we also hear Rick’s fierce determination to carry on and to continue making music that’s meaningful to him… whether it sells millions of copies or not. In this chat, they are talking about their 1988 tour and the most recent (and final) Supertramp album, "Free As A Bird". From February of 1988, it's Rick Davies of Supertramp in conversation with Gord James. Rick Davies died on Sept 6, 2025 at the age of 81.

Oui, qui peut affirmer : « J'ai toujours su que Mick deviendrait une star. John ? On était tous d'accord au lycée : un jour, on le verrait passer à la télé. »Non, bien sûr. Les profs et les camarades de classe ont tous été étonnés du destin d'un Michel Polnareff ou d'un Paul McCartney. Mais alors puisqu'il n'y a pas d'école de stars où elles grandissent toutes ensemble, qu'est-ce qui fait qu'un jour Michael devient Mick Jagger ou un Farokh Boulsara, Freddie Mercury ?Et bien, le plus souvent, un drame, une fêlure, un manque, bref un gros problème non résolu qui poussent ces enfants à développer un talent dans lequel ils vont tout donner, s'engouffrer, et qui va un jour être reconnu par tous car, oui, on n'a jamais vu ou entendu un truc pareil. Et en 1962, à Windlesham, une petite ville de la campagne londonienne près du fameux champ de course hippique d'Ascot, le jeune Roger Hodgson vit un drame avec le divorce de ses parents. Avant de quitter la maison familiale, son père lui fait un incroyable cadeau : une guitare électrique. A cette époque, je peux vous dire que des guitares électriques, on n'en voit pas beaucoup. D'ailleurs pourquoi deviendrait-on guitariste ? Les membres de l'orchestre sont toujours dans l'ombre, regardez, derrière Elvis Presley ou Frank Sinatra. Ce sont les Beatles qui dans quelques mois vont devenir les premiers premiers musiciens superstars et envoyer des milliers d'adolescents britanniques dans les magasins d'instruments, créant une génération de surdoués. Voilà donc notre jeune Roger replié sur sa guitare électrique. Il est tellement attaché à ce cadeau de son père que, pour combler le vide, se protéger du complexe d'être désormais un enfant de divorcé, il se rend à l'école avec elle. Et surprise, il ne se fait pas montrer du doigt en classe, miuex, son instituteur lui apprend à jouer les trois accords principaux.Rodger fusionne alors avec sa guitare. Un an plus tard, il donne déjà un concert dans son école en duo avec un autre élève avec qui il interprète neuf chansons qu'il a lui-même composées. La musique et lui font désormais UN. Rodger apprend aussi à jouer de nombreux instruments, rien ne lui résiste.Au sortir de l'école, en 1969, Rodger Hodgson enregistre déjà un disque pour le label Island qui avant de produire Bob Marley et U2, publie alors Steve Winwood et Eric Clapton. Il faut dire que Rodger a croisé le chemin d'un autre surdoué nommé Reginald Dwight avec qui il chante sous le nom de Argosy. Malheureusement après un premier 45 tours, Reginald le quitte avec le batteur et l'autre guitariste pour faire une carrière solo sous le nom de Elton John. Se retrouvant seul, Roger Hodgson répond alors à la petite annonce d'un certain Rick Davies : cherche guitariste. Le jour de l'audition, ils sont une petite centaine à faire la file. Pourtant, immédiatement, Rick dira : C'est lui ! Quel talent ! Je n'ai jamais entendu un truc pareil.

Les rumeurs se multiplient à quelques jours du remaniement. Sondage Léger sur les intentions de vote à Montréal et sur le sentiment de sécurité. Une tête retrouvée à Montréal. Si on prend les exemples les plus connus de la légende du rock, les Beatles, les Rolling Stones ou encore Queen, on apprend qu'ils ont vécu des débuts très difficiles avec un métier qui ne croit pas en eux, ne leur laissant qu'une misère et la foi en leur musique pour vivre.Et bien si cela a été le cas pour les membres de Supertramp, sachez que nous n'aurions en fait jamais dû en entendre parler, ils n'auraient jamais commis les tubes et les albums que nous connaissons par cœur s'ils n'avaient pas été aidé par un homme totalement désintéressé, ou presque. Et ça, c'est une belle story.Au début des années 50, dans le sud de l'Angleterre, un défilé militaire défile à Swindon, une ville ouvrière de la taille de Liège. A son passage un petit garçon nommé Rick Davies ouvre la porte de sa maison pour les voir passer. Il ne rate jamais une fanfare, il adore ça. Particulièrement le son métallique du tambour, c'est ça qui le fait vibrer. Aussi, à l'occasion d'un anniversaire, un ami de la famille qui est bricoleur lui offre une batterie qu'il a fabriquée lui-même à l'aide de boîtes de biscuit en métal. Ca fait un boucan d'enfer, au grand dam des parents mais le petit adore ça et il se débrouille drôlement bien. En faut-il plus pour qu'il entre à l'académie ? Du tout, Rick est super motivé et il apprend le solfège, la musique, la batterie. A l'âge de douze ans, ça y est : il en possède une vraie. Un véritable événement, ses parents ne sont pas riches avec un père dans la marine marchande et une maman coiffeuse dans un petit salon.A l'âge de 15 ans, Rick découvre le rock'n'roll avec Cliff Richard et les Shadows, c'est le coup de foudre. Il s'est mis entretemps au piano et à l'orgue électrique dont il a appris tout seul à jouer. Une nouvelle fois, admiration de ses parents et de ses amis.Sûr, ce gamin ne mérite pas la vie dure de ses parents, aussi ils l'envoient dans l'enseignement supérieur où Rick rencontre d'autres musiciens avec qui il forme un groupe de rock. Le batteur se nomme Gilbert O'Sullivan. Oui, LE Gilbert O'Sullivan qui sera un jour une superstar mondiale et à qui, il le clamera haut et fort, Rick Davies a tout appris puisqu'au départ il n'est que le batteur du groupe.Mais voilà, son père tombé gravement malade et pour longtemps, Rick doit abandonner les études et son groupe pour travailler : c'est sur lui que pèse désormais la charge de faire rentrer de l'argent à la maison. La soudure à l'usine, ça n'a rien à voir avec la musique : jour après jour, mois après mois, la routine s'installe. Ce n'est plus dans la vie rêvée des Beatles dans A Hard Days Night mais plutôt Le Voyage au bout de l'enfer avec Robert de Niro et Meryl Streep.Qui pourrait croire que ce jeune type qui arrive l'usine le matin, la mine sombre avec dans son sac sa boîte et son thermos va un jour écrire et chanter des chansons que le monde entier reprendra durant des décennies ? Seul un rêveur pourrait y croire.

Il a raison Voulzy. Londres en 1966 est véritablement coupée en deux mondes qui semblent ne pas pouvoir se rejoindre. D'un côté vous avez les bobbys, les hommes en costumes noirs, les façades sombres, bref à part le rouge des cabines téléphoniques et des autobus, la capitale de l'ex-empire britannique n'a pas changé malgré la reconstruction d'après-guerre. Et puis de l'autre côté, vous avez quelques quartiers où la folie explose : ça s'appelle la pop. Elle s'écoute sur quelques nouvelles radios de la BBC et de la Mer du Nord embarquant la jeunesse anglaise dans un monde de couleurs. Les jupes sont courtes à faire peur, les cheveux longs à en rire, et puis surtout il a ces danses où les jeunes font n'importe quoi.Dans cette ville où l'industrie du disque règne grâce aux ventes mondiales des Beatles, Tom Jones, Eric Clapton, des Who et autres Rolling Stones, l'argent coule à flots. Tout est permis surtout de rêver dans sa cave, son grenier, le garage des parents, qu'on peut réussir comme eux. C'est tellement possible que même les Américains quittent New York pour Londres afin de se faire connaître chez eux. Ainsi le jeune Jimi Hendrix qui vient de recruter deux Anglais pour former son groupe : the Experience. Il a pour ce faire, dévoyé un certain Noel Redding de son groupe les Lovely Ones qui se retrouve sans claviériste. Je peux le remplacer si vous voulez ? Tu sais jouer de l'orgue ? Bien sûr. Rick Davies, 22 ans, a menti. Mais la perspective de partir enregistrer de la musique en Allemagne l'a poussé à raconter cette carbistouille. Après une solide formation musicale à la batterie, Rick a appris tout seul le piano il y a quelques années pour jouer du rock'n'roll. Mais l'orgue électrique, c'est autre chose. Sauf qu'en 1966 à Londres, tout est possible, je vous l'ai dit. Rick apprend vite. Le groupe ne fait pas d'étincelles mais lors d'une session de studio à Munich, Rick rencontre un riche Hollandais qui lui fait une proposition dingue : tu es vraiment doué. Si tu montes un groupe, je le finance. Je paie tout : matériel, enregistrement.Produire un groupe du pays des Beatles, un hobby de millionaire du continent. Et il tient parole. Rick organise un casting en 1969 en publiant une petite annonce à laquelle répondent de nombreux musiciens dont un multi-instrumentiste à la voix haut perchée nommé Rodger Hodgson. C'est le coup de foudre artistique, un nouveau duo de la trempe Lennon-McCartney vient de naître. Il faudra juste six ans pour que leurs compatriotes en entendent parler et presque dix pour qu'ils soient populaires dans le monde entier. Comment ont-ils tenus tout ce temps ? Tout simplement parce que gagner des fortunes n'était pas leur but. A l'époque, tout ce qu'ils voulaient, c'est créer de la musique et la jouer, si possible devant des salles pleines et accueillantes.

Living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is not a life sentence, as Rick Davies so eloquently tells Hugh and Josh in this episode of The Imperfix. Best known as Jimmy from the TV show 'Offspring', Rick is unbelievably vulnerable in sharing his story with OCD - from the awkward and painful compulsions, to the relief of a diagnosis at 18 years old. Here Rick share's how he was inspired by the trailblazing work of Penny Moodie and talks through finding peace and happiness amidst the torment.

On this weeks episode, we take on a big LP, the 1979 monster hit by Supertramp, Breakfast in America. Supertramp struggled early in their career to find an audience. The two main song writers brought different strengths to the band. Founding member Rick Davies leaned more to the progressive rock side of things, where as Roger Hodgson was more pop oriented.  Every album after their breakout LP Crime of the Century showed them gaining popularity. But Breakfast in America is their magnum opus. It is the definitive Supertramp album, the culmination of  Davies and Hodgson blending tier individual strengths into a distinctive sound (aided in no small part by heavy use of a Wurlitzer electric piano).  Full of well crafted (and catchy) tunes like  "The Logical Song," "Take the Long Way Home," and "Goodbye Stranger," and possessing one of the most iconic album covers of all time, Breakfast in America captured the hearts of millions of listeners worldwide. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.
