Yes, it's ‘80s New Year's Wrestling with Bobby the Brain and Gorilla Monsoon!It's a recap show on Jan 2, 1989, as Bobby and Gorilla discuss great moments of 1988 wrestling. First up, Jimmy Powers took on Dangerous Danny Davis and lost, though Davis cheated. They proceed to talk the Summer Slam as the Intercontinental tile changed hands. Of course, the duo had to mention broke the record of title ownership with 30 seconds. He beat Hulk Hogan and gave the belt to Ted Dibiasi, which was illegal.Subsequently they discuss new faces in the WWF: Mr. Perfect, Red Rooster, Bushwhackers, Big Boss Man. And no episode is complete without a plug for the upcoming Royal Rumble. Back to the matches, the Rockers fought Iron Mike Sharpe and Jose Estrada and won. On Thanksgiving, Demolition battled the Powers of Pain. Harley Race abdicated and gave Haku his crown. This week, Bec decided that it's been a while since she's gotten to talk about '70s concert material, so we're discussing the legendary August 19, 1974, show in which Elvis abandoned his usual setlist and completely changed directions. Opening with "Big Boss Man" instead of "See See Rider", filling out the show with tons of newer and more contemporary material like "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues", "Promised Land" and "It's Midnight" and forgoing most of his iconic hits in favor of more unique and intimate performances just for his Vegas audiences.  We sit down with the soundboard recording and try to reckon with how Elvis chose to make such a bold move, whether fans and audiences appreciated it, and why he abandoned it so quickly to fall back into the comfortable professional grooves that would carry him to the end of his life. And before all that, Bec also fills us in her trip to see Priscilla Presley's recent live talk in Sydney. For Song of the Week, somehow without coordinating it at all, each host picked one of the only two songs written for Elvis by Stanley Gelber, the lawyer-turned-pro songwriter who submitted a handful of demos to Hill & Range in the 1960s, landing an Elvis cut with Bec's pick of "My Desert Serenade" from the Harum Scarum soundtrack. Then Justin rings in the holiday season with Gelber's other song, "On A Snowy Christmas Night," a holiday track that had coincidentally been submitted not long after Harum Scarum (roughly around when Elvis did "If Every Day Was Like Christmas") but somehow wound up in the demo pile later in 1971 for Elvis to record - despite Hill & Range no longer having the rights!  If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. This week we continue with the second set from the Grateful Dead's final show at the Fillmore West on July 2, 1971 This starts out with an unusual 'Sugar Magnolia' opener, going into a sweet 'Sing Me Back Home'.. after a short "Mama Tried' we are thrown into a whirlwind with a great 'Cryptical>Drums>Other One', with the Other One being dedicated to Owsley who was incarcerated at the time.. while this is perhaps the highlight of this set, the closing 'Not Fade Away>Going Down the Road>Not Fade Away' shows the band at their rocking best. This week the Deadpod goes back to a crazy show that happened back on June 21, 1971, which was only the band's second performance in Europe. Apparently they were invited to a outdoor festival in France by a rich fashion designer, who paid for the their transport, equipment and entourage to travel to Europe to play at this free festival. Well they were put in up some kind of nice Chateau, and the festival was rained out with a huge downpour. They sat around for a day or two and decided to break out the instruments and play at the grounds of the Chateau for the locals and those who traveled with them.
