Beyond the Mat is a movie that appears NOWHERE in the 1999 box office charts, mainly because it only screened once in 1999 in Los Angeles on October 22, thanks in no small part to Vince McMahon fuckery (though it did get a limited release in March of 2000). Beyond the Mat was directed by Barry Blaustein, an accomplished comedy screenwriter, and it features the real-life stories of wrestling legends Terry Funk, Mick Foley, and Jake the Snake Roberts, Though it wasn't a commercial hit, it received a mostly favorable critical response, and has gone on to become a beloved documentary, especially among wrestling fans. Joining John and Julia to discuss it is Ross Benes, author of the upcoming book 1999: The Year Low Culture Conquered America and Kickstarted our Bizarre Times. His book will be available everywhere in April. You can learn more about Ross and his work on his website: www.rossbenes.com

"Jake the Snake" Roberts was a wrestling legend, famous for his trademark bag of snakes and intimidating on-screen persona. But behind the glitz and glamour of his in-ring performances lay a dark and troubled reality. Jake's addiction was a result of a traumatic childhood. His father was not only physically abusive, but he also sexually abused Jake's sister and had a history of pedophilia that included Jake's mother, who was only 13 years old when she gave birth to him. In a desperate attempt to numb his pain, Jake turned to drugs and alcohol, leading him down a path of self-destruction. Despite being a star of the 1980s wrestling scene, Jake's addiction was spiraling out of control. He would show up to matches drunk or high and even disappear for days at a time. It wasn't until he hit rock bottom that he realized he needed to make a change. Jake eventually committed to getting clean, with rehab and turning to a higher power for support. He also found solace in DDP Yoga, which helped him heal his mind, body, and spirit. After over a decade of sobriety, Jake is now an advocate for addiction recovery and mental health awareness, sharing his story to inspire and help others facing similar challenges. Jake's journey is a testament to the power of resilience and hope in overcoming adversity. Despite facing unimaginable trauma and struggling with addiction and mental health issues, he was able to turn his life around and find a sense of purpose. Jake's story is a reminder of the importance of support and understanding for those battling addiction and mental health issues, and the power of the human spirit to overcome even the darkest of circumstances. SHAKE THE BOOTY! In this episode of Wrasslin' Raw, the boys bear witness to a particularly poor episode of Monday Night Raw. Flash Funk gets pyro, Shawn Michaels has an apology to present to everyone, and The Goon is here to ruin everyone's good time. That trend continues with Fake Diesel, Jake “the Snake” Roberts, and the Mildman Marc Mero. Some confusing events happened last Wednesday in London, but it's very clear that Tiny Tim has passed away and Jerry Lawler loves it. “I like my ukulele!”

It's a fine celebration of 20 years of professional wrestling on "The Superstation" TBS. Complete with legends such as Gordon Solie, Bruno Sammartino, Andre The Giant, Dusty Rhodes, Bill Watts, Thunderbolt Patterson and more! However, there was also some (not much) wrestling action featuring Ron Simmons, Cactus Jack, Vader, Rick Rude, Sting, Dustin Rhodes, Barry Windham, Jake the Snake Roberts and many others. We go back to 1992 when the Bill Watts era attempted to be completely different than the WWE...but then there was Turner Home Entertainment that didn't give a damn about Bill Watts, as long as they could turn "Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal" into a sitcom.
