Bilas shares his thoughts on Kenny Payne's status at Louisville, how many NCAA Tournament bids will come out of the ACC and coaches who complain about the changing landscape in college basketball. There's a big game coming up on Saturday evening. It's that time. The biggest and best rivalry in college sports takes flight when the Duke Blue Devils head to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. We welcome Jay Bilas to the show on Episode 589 for Part 1 of our preview of the big game! Jay Bilas provides some incredible insight in several areas of this game, first focusing on UNC. He discusses what has made them so successful this season and why they're such a problem on defense. He talks about the All-American play of RJ Davis and how the UNC offense has operated using him a lot more than he was utilized last year. Bilas provides some excellent context to the big man matchups and who may end up guarding whom when the ball is tipped. If you haven't watched UNC play this season, Jay really helps you understand what makes their engine go. After the break, we switch our conversation to how Duke is doing and what they need to bring to the table on Saturday to walk out of Chapel Hill with a win. Jay provides some valuable knowledge on what Duke has done right and whether players on the team that received some high expectations may actually be playing at an improved level this year. Of course, we end with Jay's predictions and even a surprise guest towards the end of our time with him. Jason and Donald then react to Jay's thoughts as we close out Part 1 of this preview. Look out tomorrow afternoon for Part 2 of our Duke-UNC preview, where we continue to further break down the matchups and discuss what Duke needs to do to win this huge battle for 1st place in the ACC. May 20, 2023: We're thrilled to welcome Jay Bilas (https://www.twitter.com/JayBilas) from ESPN onto the show where we covered a ton of topics on college basketball. Jay is one of the most recognizable analysts and colormen in the college game for decades. The best thing about Bilas is that he is more than happy to state his opinions on the game and the overall landscape of the game. We spoke about the impact of NIL and whether contracting and employment was really on the horizon for the college athletes. Also, we discussed the impact of officiating and where the correct emphasis should be with employing officials and how to call a charge. Jay explained what has made Tom Izzo so successful at MSU. Finally, Bilas threw some shade on all the Michiganders for being a little too wimpy with the cold. Are you looking for Spartan gear? Jay Bilas, this week's guest on “Sports Legends of the Carolinas,” is ESPN's leading college basketball analyst, and arguably the preeminent voice in the entire sport. A former Duke basketball player who started for the 1986 Blue Devils team that made it to the NCAA finals, Bilas' journey to national prominence included far more than basketball: He got a degree from Duke Law School after his playing career ended, and has long advocated that college athletes be paid for their labor. In Part 1 of our conversation, I talked to Bilas, 58, about his start calling Duke basketball games for $200; his role today as, in many ways, the conscience of college basketball; and a highlight of Bilas' legal career: a courtroom battle with Barney the purple dinosaur. We are back with Episode 426 of the DBR Podcast, and we begin a 5-part series on each of the Duke Blue Devils that hope to hear their names called in this month's NBA Draft. For that, we call in Friend of the Podcast and ESPN analyst Jay Bilas to begin our series with Paolo Banchero! However, before we start on the series, we discuss the news yesterday of the hiring of Rachel Baker, who will serve in a new role as General Manger of Duke Men's Basketball. We discuss the role and how Baker will help the entire program set itself up to be a leader in the arena of NIL opportunities. It also helps the program to adapt to the times quickly as we move into a new era of college basketball. After the break, Bilas joins us to discuss Paolo Banchero. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of his game, why he's so highly regarded as one of the top 3 prospects in the draft, and what he improved on in college to give him this opportunity to be a star at the next level. While we are fairly confident that Banchero will end up with the Houston Rockets as the 3rd pick in the draft, we do a bit of Over/Under on his draft slot to close out the show. We will be back this weekend with the second player in our NBA Draft preview series, which will be A.J. Griffin. Until then, definitely let us know your thoughts at DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com! The DBR Podcast will be previewing Dukies in the NBA draft over the next week or so... and there is no one better to help out with that preview than Duke's own Jay Bilas. Bilas has been an expert on ESPN's NBA Draft coverage for close to two decades and has been pouring over scouting reports and talking to NBA insiders about how the draft will shape up. The DBR is going to have three separate episodes previewing the draft, one focusing on each of the three Dukies hoping to hear their names called on July 29th. This first episode features Matthew Hurt. Jay will tell you all about what NBA teams see -- the good, the bad, and the ugly -- in Hurt's game. And, after the draft talk is done, the podcast crew has a brief discussion about some very interesting measurements to come out of Duke's summer workouts with the 2021-22 team. There is a new strongest Dukie of all time and a new longest Dukies of all time. If that doesn't get you a bit more excited about this coming season, we don't know what will. Here we are, almost exactly a week after Brad Hurlbut, the athletic director at Fairleigh Dickinson and member of the local NCAA Championship committee who walked down the stairs of The University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, put his hand on his chest and stomped on the hearts of the assembled crowd. In Part 1, we told the story of what happened last week. In Part 2, we covered what happened after they cancelled the championship. And in Part 3, I turn to Jay Bilas, the college basketball analyst who once played and coached at Duke and is still a practicing lawyer in North Carolina. Bilas has spent the better part of his career questioning and assessing the dysfunction and flaws of the NCAA. Bilas is brilliant. I always get smarter when I spend time with him. It’s Bilas, Bones, John Smoltz and Tony Romo who are on my modern Mount Rushmore of sports analysts. Even if I don’t care about the teams or the outcome, I’ll watch for an education on the sport and what I’m seeing on the screen. In this case, I called Bilas to teach us about what we saw on those steps that day, and I wanted to get a better understanding of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. When Jay Bilas calls out the Indiana fanbase, the Hysterics answer. He's the preeminent voice in college basketball and even though we are the opposite of that, we just couldn't let his comments slide. Much to his credit, Jay immediately agreed to hop on the pod and discuss these points of contention, despite having no idea of the lunacy that awaited. Let the games begin! Earlier this week, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim commented on Jalen Johnson's departure from Duke University to prepare for the NBA Draft. A number of people, including Jay Bilas of ESPN found Boeheim's comments inappropriate. Bilas joins Monica McNutt and King McClure to discuss the Johnson situation and his response to the Hall of Fame Syracuse coach. Jay, Monica, & King all bring their unique perspectives to the discussion.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
