Shaping Bitcoin's Future in UK with Freddie New SLP614

Stephan Livera Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2024 74:54

In this conversation, Freddie New, general counsel at The Little Car and Head of Policy at Bitcoin Policy UK, discusses the evolution of Bitcoin regulation in the UK. He highlights the historical context of regulatory attitudes, the role of the Law Commission in recognizing Bitcoin as property, and the challenges posed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).  The conversation also touches on banking access issues, the impact of fraud concerns, and the future of Bitcoin custodianship. They also discuss the strategic reserve held by the UK government, regulatory challenges faced by Bitcoin exchanges, and the broader policy goals for Bitcoin advocacy. Freddie sheds light on the political landscape and the need for engagement with politicians to promote Bitcoin-friendly policies. Additionally, they address the ECB's recent criticisms of Bitcoin and contrast the regulatory approaches of the UK and EU. Takeaways Freddie New advocates for Bitcoin policy in the UK. The UK has a history of misunderstanding Bitcoin. The Law Commission has recognized Bitcoin as property. The FCA has restricted access to Bitcoin products. Fraud concerns impact banking access for Bitcoin users. Bitcoin is seen as a unique form of money. The government is becoming more positive about Bitcoin. Banks are primarily concerned with self-preservation. The FCA's stance is a significant barrier to adoption. Bitcoin is for both individuals and institutions. The UK holds 61,000 Bitcoin, making it the third largest holder. There is a need for the UK to capitalize on its Bitcoin holdings. Self-custody of Bitcoin must remain legal in the UK. Access to exchanges and banking services is crucial for Bitcoin adoption. The UK should explore the potential of Bitcoin mining using renewable energy. Political engagement is essential for Bitcoin advocacy in the UK. The ECB's criticisms of Bitcoin are fundamentally flawed. The UK and EU have different regulatory approaches to Bitcoin. Pension funds are beginning to allocate assets to Bitcoin. Support for Bitcoin Policy UK can help influence positive change. Timestamps: (00:00) - Intro (01:00) - Who is Freddie New? In this episode, we're speaking with Bethany Crystal about all things fractional work, using AI to improve learning and workflows, and we wrap up with a quick discussion on the Bitcoin developer ecosystem. Bethany is the web3 fractional work queen, and she shares very openly in this episode about her experience as a fractional worker in web3, what her process looks like, and practical tips for others to think outside of the box about how they want to work.As a mother of two and hobbyist of many things, Bethany has had to think creatively about how she can find the best balance for herself to do all the things she wants to do in life. For her, the answer was fractional work, or working on various projects on a contract or part time basis so that she has time for other aspects of life she enjoys and so that she can have her curiosity constantly satisfied with a variety of projects. She talks about some of the pros and cons to being a fractional worker, the types of people she believes are best suited for the job, and gives us practical tips for identifying our core skillsets and finding work. She also shares some of the ways she's been using AI to aid in her workflow and help her learn new skills at a much faster rate as well.Bethany was nominated by DeFi Beats and voted onto the podcast by DeFi Beats, Parker Jay-Pachirat, Birb, Triumph, fifthworldzach, David Phelps, Spencer Graham, Andy Boyan, and Nick Naraghi. COLLECT THIS EPISODESUBSCRIBE TO REHASH PODCAST CLUB (RPC) FOLLOW REHASH:TwitterWarpcast (Farcaster)TikTokInstagramNewsletterRehash Podcast Club (RPC)Diana Chen (Host) IMPORTANT LINKS:Bethany's WebsiteBethany's BlogThe 4-Box Job Searching GridTime management for fractional workersBethany's TwitterBethany's Warpcast (Farcaster)Building on Bitcoin TIMESTAMPS0:00 Intro3:32 What is fractional work?5:09 Bethany's background in fractional work11:35 Pros and cons to fractional work15:44 Tips for promoting yourself as a fractional worker23:15 How to balance life with work26:25 Strategies for finding clients and work32:46 Education x AI36:54 Developing your learning stack44:43 Incorporating AI into your learning stack48:36 Building on Bitcoin L253:08 Can You Not53:40 Follow Bethany DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is the opinion of the speaker(s) only and is for informational purposes only. My guest on today's podcast is Jimmy Song, Bitcoin Developer, Educator and Entrepreneur and one of the most popular personalities in the bitcoin community. I had listened to Jimmy on many podcasts and I knew that he was really against the rest of the crypto space, including Ethereum, and the whole concept of Web3. Naturally, I really wanted to talk to him as there is nothing better than being able to have a dialogue with people who hold different views from yours. I have to say that this was a tough conversation because Jimmy and I disagree on a lot of things. I see Blockchain technology as interesting and revolutionary in itself with application to many other things beyond bitcoin. Jimmy not only disagrees with me, but he also tends to be rather hostile towards everything Web3 to a point that he calls the whole space a scam and immoral.  I'm grateful to Jimmy for sharing his time and insights with me even though our perspectives deeply differ.

The tendency in our society today is to be very high time preference. We want things right now and consume things right now. This is how the monetary system is designed. It's designed to enslave you through that, it lets you consume first and pay off later. But that unfortunately enslaves you in ways that you don't really understand until later. With Bitcoin, you get the opposite. It's about saving and then getting things afterwards. That's a lot more rewarding a lot better for character and a lot better for civilization. I would say the real fruit of Bitcoin is that ability to think long term and, and if there's one thing that I would encourage your listeners to go figure out is how to think long term and how to change the incentives in your life. So that you're thinking long term because it's a lot better, a lot more rewarding. A lot better for society and civilization.

After years of what has seemed like an endless debate, bitcoin may be at a crucial turning point in its relatively short lifetime. The question network scalability has divided the community into several factions which are seemingly irreconcilable. However, in just a few weeks, the future of bitcoin may be decided as miners and users throw their support behind one of many proposals to propel the bitcoin network into a new era. Bitcoin Developer and Principal Architect at Paxos, Jimmy Song, joins us to discuss the different scalability proposals for which miners are currently signaling their support. Among others, Segregated Witness (BIP 141), Emergent Consensus (Bitcoin Unlimited) and SegWit2x (The New York Agreement), are gaining significant traction among miners. Will one of these proposals gain majority support, allowing for the network to upgrade with relative ease, or will we enter a situation where one proposal is backed by a strong minority of users, potentially forking the network into two? Topics covered in this episode: Jimmy’s background as a Bitcoin Developer and former VP of Engineering at Armory A broad overview of bitcoin network’s current situation An overview of the different scaling proposals for which miners are signaling their support Important dates coming up in July and August of 2017 The difference between Segregated Witness and SegWit2x The UASF and how it may affect SegWit2x implementation Episode links: BIP91: The SegWit Activation "Kludge" That Should Keep Bitcoin Whole Examining Bitmain’s Press Release BIP 148 UASF Q&A Greg Maxwell: "a hasty snapshot of a few of my views" UAHF: A contingency plan against UASF (BIP148) How to Give Everyone More Control "Bitcoin Scaling Agreement at Consensus 2017 Bitcoin, UASF and Skin in the Game UASF BIP148 Scenarios and Game Theory Why the UASF Segwit Scenario is Hopelessly Naive [bitcoin-discuss] [Bitcoin-segwit2x] Alpha Milestone This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Sébastien Couture.
