Francisco Moreno was born in Mexico City in 1986 and immigrated to Arlington, Texas, in 1992. He attended the Conceptual Design Summer Program at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Querétaro Campus in Mexico. Moreno returned to Arlington to complete his Bachelor in Fine Art at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2010, where he received the James S. Barnett Jr. Ideas in Art Charitable Foundation Scholarship. In 2012, Francisco graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a Master in Fine Art, aided by the prestigious Presidential Scholar Tuition award.Moreno and I discuss choosing the path of originality, how drawing gives him purpose, the metaphorical power of images, and his current large scale work at the Dallas Museum of Art. Dr. Azra Raza is the Chan Soon-Shiong Professor of Medicine and Director of the MDS Center at Columbia University in New York. Previously, she was the Chief of Hematology-Oncology and the Gladys Smith Martin Professor of Oncology at the University of Massachusetts. She is considered an international authority on pre-leukemia (MDS) and acute leukemia and is one of those rare physician-scientists who divide their time equally between caring for patients and supervising a state-of-the-art basic research lab that is well-funded by multiple large grants. Dr. Raza started collecting blood and marrow samples on her patients in 1984 and now her Tissue Bank, the largest and oldest in the country with >60,000 samples, is considered a unique national treasure.Dr. Raza has published her original clinical and basic research comprising over 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts in high profile journals like Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Cell, Molecular Cell, Cancer Research, Blood, Leukemia. She has published >1000 abstracts, dozens of book chapters and edited a book devoted to MDS. Blake Kimzey founded and directs Writing Workshops Dallas & Writing Workshops Paris and is a co-founder of The Big Texas Read. Arthur Peña is a Bronx based artist, curator, and writer. He is the co-founder of Dallas’ Deadbolt Studios, founder/director of experimental art space WARE:WOLF:HAUS, and grant-funded, roving music venue/music label Vice Palace.Arthur discusses his evolution as an artist, his Dallas upbringing, and time spent in the studio.
