The month of September is dedicated to pleb miners who will not unplug nor comply. The backbone of the bitcoin network, dedicated to decentralisation and freedom.   On this #PlebMinerMonth episode of the pod, Jon and I speak with @BraiinsMining co-founder and CTO, Jan Capek. Jan is an embedded devices engineer and the father of the Braiins OS firmware and BOSminer software. Jan dives deep into the development of firmware and the challenges he and his development team encounter when attempting to modify machines without the assistance of the manufacturers. We cover Braiins' (SlushPool) role in UASF and how stratum V2 enhances security, efficiency, flexibility, and decentralization of mining. We also discuss the development of the BaiinsOS+ firmware, and the advantages it can bring to a mining operator. We discuss the rebranding of SlushPool to Braiins Pool under the Braiins brand umbrella. We dove deep on a lot of topics in this one, the only thing we didn't cover was “when”. The Braiins team has been a great partner in #PlebMinerMonth, they have sent swag for us to give away as prizes, several of their Bitcoin Mining Handbooks, as well as financial support to ship all of the gear and prizes out to the Pleb. “It's a competition of ideas… and it's a collaborative competition of ideas. So if you propose an organised set of ideas as a proposal, some parts of them might end up being good and used, and some parts might not. And you just have to be open to that.”— Adam BackAdam Back, an original cypherpunk, inventor of Hashcash and co-founder and CEO of Blockstream. We discuss the controversy around BIP 119: the soft fork proposal aiming to add “covenants” to Bitcoin. We also talk about the collapse of Luna. - - - - Flexible smart contracts are a USP of Ethereum and other blockchains. Currently, Bitcoin only enables basic smart contract functionality, such as a timelock that specifies when a transaction can be spent. BIP 119 proposes to add more flexibility for applying restrictions to transactions via a new programme operation code (opcode) called CheckTemplateVerify (CTV).CTV would enable conditions on spending UTXOs that would limit, not when they are spent, but how. These are referred to as “covenants”. It is envisaged CTV could significantly enhance Bitcoin by enabling a raft of new and powerful applications to be developed; these could bring new security, privacy and scalability benefits. The concern is that CTV is a significant change and could open up potential unknown security risks, or that if this functionality is desirable, it could be possible be better achieved with a different technical approachBIP119 has been authored and enthusiastically promoted by Bitcoin developer, Jeremy Rubin. It has been around now for 2 years, and whilst Rubin has generated support for BIP119, he has also faced criticism from prominent Bitcoiners for his approach and so far there doesn't seem to be consensus among the protocol development community on implementing the proposal. The consideration, approval and activation of changes to Bitcoin are methodical and slow. Further, such changes normally involve the development of competing ideas, and a collaborative approach to combine the best elements from these efforts. Notable critics feel that BIP119 is being too forcefully promoted and that more time is needed to test and consider alternatives. The pressure to innovate will always be there. The issue at hand is Bitcoin's USP: it has never been hacked. This has been hard-won. So it seems BIP119 isn't going to get a formal consensus at the moment. Rubin, however, could bypass the Core developers and implement a UASF. Could we again be about to test the limits of Bitcoin's rough consensus process? In this episode of Bitcoin, Explained, hosts Aaron van Wirdum and Sjors Provoost discuss URSFs, which stands for either User Rejected Soft Forks or User Resisted Soft Forks, depending on who you ask. URSFs are a recently introduced tool in Bitcoin's upgrade mechanism toolkit. In the first part of the episode, Aaron and Sjors explain that URSFs are best considered the mirror equivalent of UASFs (User Activated Soft Forks) with mandated signaling. Where UASFs will towards the end of a soft fork activation window reject blocks that don't signal readiness for a soft fork, URSFs will reject blocks that do signal. If both UASF and URSF clients are deployed, they would in principle create a split in the blockchain. In the second part of the episode, the duo outlines the various soft fork upgrade mechanisms, ranging from MASFs (Miner Activated Soft Forks), flag day activated UASFs and mandated signaling UASFs. Aaron then explains why he believes mandated signaling UASFs are his preferred method of deploying soft forks, and why he thinks URSFs should in the future be offered as an added option for users who prefer to reject the soft fork. Finally, Sjors lays out the “rough consensus” guidelines as used in context of the Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF), and how this applies to Bitcoin upgrades.

Stealth, Speed, Precision, and Persistence: The Keys to the Aerospace Advantage Episode Summary: Join 17th Air Force Chief of Staff Gen John Jumper (ret) and Mitchell Institute Dean Lt Gen Dave Deptula (ret) to explore how the Air Force can secure maximum value for every dollar it invests. In conversations with Aerospace Nation host Lt Col John Baum (ret), these seasoned leaders explore the intersection between technology, concepts of operation, and a continual quest to pursue smart solutions, not just pure mass. A central part of the conversation focuses on cost-per-effect analysis and covers a wide range of air operations—from the skies over Vietnam and Desert Storm, to Kosovo and Afghanistan. These leaders also explore key investment areas that should be prioritized to best address tomorrow's challenges. Full Topic Guide In Episode 4, host John Baum dives into how to best maximize defense investment decisions through cost-per-effect analysis Baum and Mitchell Institute's Executive Director Doug Birkey provide concrete examples regarding how this thinking works. Baum and Birkey then welcome 17th Air Force Chief of Staff Gen John Jumper, UASF, (ret.) onto the show to provide his firsthand experience of seeing technologies aligned with cost-per-effect principles in action during the Vietnam War. He then tells how this experience changed his calculus moving forward as he returned stateside as he helped shape Air Force modernization as well as tactical and operational procedures. He details how he pushed for stealth, stand-off munitions,  precision weapons, and systems that had persistence as a way to leverage cost-per-effect advantages. Gen Jumper then describes his vision for future Air Force investment decisions.  Lt Gen David Deptula, USAF (ret.)  then describes how technologies aligned with cost-per-effect thinking were brought to bear in Operation Desert Storm. Stealth and precision created a situation in which 1 F-117 was able to cause the same effect on target as 19 non-stealthy aircraft. He then discusses how politics and short-term objectives undermined further gains the Air Force could have made in this area The episode wraps with Baum providing an assessment of the discussion and a final comparative example.

What Bitcoin Did
Roger Ver on Why Bitcoin Cash is the Real Bitcoin

What Bitcoin Did

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2018

Roger Ver is, without doubt, one of the most controversial people within the Crypto community. His fork of Bitcoin, use of the Bitcoin.com domain and his stock answers about honouring the original Satoshi White Paper have rightfully opened him up to questioning.Tribal factions have created a toxic mix of fighting and abuse threatening a free and open debate. What some believe is fair and open criticism has led to social intimidation where the act of creating content is now objected to, even before the content has been seen or heard.Abuse, false accusations and overt pressure from key personalities in the Crypto community has made me question who I should interview, how I should conduct an interview and the beliefs I should form. The same people who want censorship-free money are happy to intimidate free thought.I have also faced contradictory accusations that if you interview a scammer, you are only doing it to gain followers and because you interviewed Roger, you will lose a lot of respect and followers.Well, which is it?It is neither, I appreciate every follower I have, and yes, I want to grow my followers and the reach of my podcast but I do my interviews whether or not this will lead to a net gain or loss.In preparing the intro for my podcast and even writing this, I am sat here questioning my free thought. There is a nervousness that if I am open about my experience with Roger that the Bitcoin community will ostracise me, I’ll be hung out to dry as a heathen, a turncoat, a fucking big blocker.Hang the bastard!Going into my interview with Roger, I was firmly in the small block camp, but in preparing my interview, I wanted to be as impartial as I could. Surely there are things we can learn from everyone, and if we learn nothing new, we lost nothing trying.Nothing about my experience with Roger convinced me that big blocks are the solution to Bitcoin scaling, but plenty of my experience with him confirmed for me that I was right to go and see him.I liked Roger, there I said it, I liked your villain! But the Roger I liked was the guy I met off camera, the relaxed Roger who wasn’t defending the same questions with the same answers. It was the Roger I discussed the plight of Ross Ulbricht with, the Roger who talked about the ideals of freedom from the state, the Roger who sat back with his arms behind his head, not on the edge of his seat, ready to attack. The only way I got to know this Roger was by flying halfway around the world to meet him, by spending time with him either side of the interview and being respectful to him. Something many of you reading this won't get to experience because all you see is Bitcoin Cash Roger, rage quitting with a middle finger to John Carvalho or talking about dying babies at Deconomy. And even writing the above, I can picture the responses, this is how people like Roger work, they trick you with being nice and then trap you. The social intimidation is real, the fear of what how people will react when I say, yeah, you know what, he’s alright, is real.Sadly, if you don't attack Roger and call him out for his bullshit, then you aren’t a proper journalist, and you’re one of them. Don't worry, I called him out.In my short, very amateur career as a 'journalist', I am doing things my way. I am not out there trophy hunting for a middle finger meme so that a few anonymous cartoon frogs and can Twitter high five me and say well done Pete, fuck Roger!Firstly I do this for me, to learn and develop myself. Secondly, I do this for the people who want to hear it. Lastly, I do it for those who think I shouldn't. I do it for everyone, whatever your opinion. And if from this interview we all learn something new, or we see a new angle then great. If we learn nothing new, then at least I tried.I certainly learned new things; I saw a bitter, competitive businessman who understands that for commerce to adopt Bitcoin, it needs to be fast and cheap. Someone who therefore did it his way, controversially, rather than working with the community. I saw someone struggling to admit his flaws and thus working in a way which is counterproductive to his own goals. This is the second time, I have been attacked for interviewing a guest on my podcast. The tribal nature of Bitcoin wreaks of control, built on the shoulders of a libertarian ideal. You are either with us or against us. If you’re even entertaining the thoughts of them you’re against us. If you talk to them you’re against us. If you can also remotely see their point on any issue, you are against us.And if you are against us, we will hang you out to dry; we will humiliate you, we will block you, we will ostracise you, we will fucking crush you.Whether you think I am a journalist or not, whether you like my work or not, shouldn’t we be open to free dialogue?I will always stand up for the freedom and choice of interviewing whoever I like. I will always try and create my interviews in a way which offer something new. What I will never stand for is intimidation, the subtle coercion of being accused of giving frauds a platform. The same people who watch and applaud Loius Theroux interview murderers, Nazis and pimps. Oh but that’s okay, Louis is on the TV and famous, you’re just a shitty little podcast. When we pressure the content creators into a particular narrative or if our journalists are scared to give an opinion which may be contrary to the public consensus, we are creating control and removing freedom.Do not confuse criticism with intimidation. Censorship is a broad and a slippery slope.Whether you agree with Roger or like Bitcoin Cash or not, it is part of our ecosystem and is one of only four coins listed on Coinbase. It is legitimised by the open source nature of our ecosystem and the lack of brand protection. We might not like, I don’t too, but those are the rules, or the lack of rules we have. But Bitcoin Cash doesn’t scale unless it becomes more centralised, which I do find concerning and my primary issue with it. The UASF led by Luke Dash Jr protected Bitcoin from the corporate handover to the DCG, we should protect this with all we can. But there are intelligent people on both sides of the scaling debate. There are leaders in Bitcoin who have questions about the Lightning Network, I see some quote three years before it becomes usable, others agreeing that it has many challenges to overcome.Sadly, it has become Bitcoin treason even to challenge LN, or suggest other ideas. I mean really, would it have been such a big deal to increase the block size to 2MB an alleviate the pressure on the network while layer 2 technologies are developed? I understand the long-term need to be efficient with block use, and I know that there will come a time where fees need to replace block rewards to ensure that mining is profitable. But right now we have use cases which can be supported.I am sure we can all agree that we want low fees and fast transactions, who wouldn’t? But when fees are expensive, and transactions slow, we kill a couple off uses cases, uses cases which can grow adoption. We kill BTC a usable currency for those in failed states who rely on it, and we kill it for low price transactions. And what a shame, why can’t we have both? When I was with Roger, he got me to set up a Bitcoin Cash wallet and sent me a dollar, and it was pretty much instant. I won’t lie, I was impressed, that would be much better than the 2-6 hours I currently wait for Bitcoin transactions when I am sending money to an exchange. As cool as it was, I still won’t use it, for the same reason I don’t use Litecoin, XRP or Digibyte. My currency is Bitcoin, and I’m sticking with it. Still, I will not stand for social intimidation for who I should and shouldn’t have on my podcast.Challenge the content, not the existence of the content.-----If you enjoy The What Bitcoin Did Podcast you can help support the show my doing the following:Become a Patron and get access to shows early or help contributeMake a tip:Bitcoin: 3FiC6w7eb3dkcaNHMAnj39ANTAkv8Ufi2SQR Codes: Bitcoin | Ethereum | Litecoin | Monero | ZCash | RipplecoinIf you do send a tip then please email me so that I can say thank youSubscribe on iTunes | Spotify | Stitcher | SoundCloud | YouTube | TuneIn | RSS FeedLeave a review on iTunesShare the show and episodes with your friends and familySubscribe to the newsletter on my websiteFollow me on Twitter Personal | Twitter Podcast | Instagram | Medium | YouTubeIf you are interested in sponsoring the show, you can read more about that here or please feel free to drop me an email to discuss options.

It’s hilarious enough that the SEC claims authority to write stuff on paper and expect the entire globe to obey. It’s even funnier when the agency issues a stern “investigative report” in an effort to regain control and the crypto world just laughs in the regulators’ faces. The principal never came close to successfully eliminating cell phones from his classrooms and lunchrooms. The SEC, likewise, will never come close to stopping ICOs. So in today’s show, we’ll have a good laugh and share some predictions about what the ICO community will do in the future. Then after that, we’ll dive into Bitcoin Cash. With BIP 148 expected to kick in soon, some people thought we successfully avoided a hard fork. Explaining compatibility between the Segwit activation of the current Segwit2X code and BIP 148 UASF is the meat of this weeks episode, so if this isn't your bag, or you're NOT curious, well... As of August 1st (and if Segwit is not already either locked-in or activated) nodes that run BIP 148 will not accept any blocks that don't signal Segwit. There is a chance Bitcoin will experience a chain-split on August 1st. The bad news is that this coin-split can be messy and risky. And if you're not careful, you could lose funds. Do we want SegWit2x? UASF? No changes? Something else?To be honest, we're kinda sick of talking about scaling, so tonight we're gonna dive into something related but different: sidechains. Or more specifically, drivechains. The concept of sidechains has been around for awhile, but according to Kyle Torpey, it appears that a protocol called drivechain will soon become the leading sidechain implementation. One theory is that sidechains will solve Bitcoin scaling by allowing completely new blockchains to reduce Bitcoin's load. Is this really possible? Would it compromise Bitcoin's security? We'll try to answer those questions and share more details during this week's livestream. Then later in the show, we'll cover some brand new events in the Mt. Gox saga. Karpeles is finally going to trial, but (of course) he says he's innocent.Tune in at tonight 9PM Eastern and check the list below for some of the specific stories we'll cover!- Op Ed: Drivechains Could Kill Off the Altcoin Market- Drivechain- Chief of bitcoin exchange Mt. After years of what has seemed like an endless debate, bitcoin may be at a crucial turning point in its relatively short lifetime. The question network scalability has divided the community into several factions which are seemingly irreconcilable. However, in just a few weeks, the future of bitcoin may be decided as miners and users throw their support behind one of many proposals to propel the bitcoin network into a new era. Bitcoin Developer and Principal Architect at Paxos, Jimmy Song, joins us to discuss the different scalability proposals for which miners are currently signaling their support. Among others, Segregated Witness (BIP 141), Emergent Consensus (Bitcoin Unlimited) and SegWit2x (The New York Agreement), are gaining significant traction among miners. Will one of these proposals gain majority support, allowing for the network to upgrade with relative ease, or will we enter a situation where one proposal is backed by a strong minority of users, potentially forking the network into two? Topics covered in this episode: Jimmy’s background as a Bitcoin Developer and former VP of Engineering at Armory A broad overview of bitcoin network’s current situation An overview of the different scaling proposals for which miners are signaling their support Important dates coming up in July and August of 2017 The difference between Segregated Witness and SegWit2x The UASF and how it may affect SegWit2x implementation Episode links: BIP91: The SegWit Activation "Kludge" That Should Keep Bitcoin Whole Examining Bitmain’s Press Release BIP 148 UASF Q&A Greg Maxwell: "a hasty snapshot of a few of my views" UAHF: A contingency plan against UASF (BIP148) How to Give Everyone More Control "Bitcoin Scaling Agreement at Consensus 2017 Bitcoin, UASF and Skin in the Game UASF BIP148 Scenarios and Game Theory Why the UASF Segwit Scenario is Hopelessly Naive [bitcoin-discuss] [Bitcoin-segwit2x] Alpha Milestone This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Sébastien Couture. Years into the great Bitcoin scaling debate no solution is in reach. Neither bigger blocks nor Segregated Witness have anywhere near consensus support. With the conflict escalating, a Bitcoin fork has become a real possibility. Electrum Developer Thomas Voegtlin joined us to discuss the state of the Bitcoin scaling debate. We discussed Bitcoin Unlimited, ASICBoost, SegWit activation without miner support and how a Bitcoin fork could play out. Possible outcomes include that Bitcoin Unlimited gains a majority of hashing power and starts mining bigger blocks. In the event of a fork, a proof-of-work change could be done to defend the minority chain from miner attacks. And lately a proposal was brought forward to activate SegWit without the support of the hashing power. Topics discussed in this episode: ASICBoost and its potential role in the conflict How a Bitcoin fork could happen How to split coins in case of a fork How UASF could be used to activate SegWit without miner support Requirements for UASF to be safe How Electrum would handle a fork Episode links: Electrum Bitcoin Wallet ASICBoost – Hacker Noon Bitcoin's New Controversy: The AsicBoost Allegations Explained - CoinDesk Timo Hanke on ASICBoost and SegWit Non-Activation From AsicBoost to UASF: Greg Maxwell on Bitcoin's Path Forward - CoinDesk [bitcoin-dev] Thomas Voegtlin: Soft Fork Threshold Signaling Proposal UASF Working Group [bitcoin-dev] Greg Maxwell: I do not support the BIP 148 UASF Thomas Voegtlin: Electrum, SPV Wallets And Bitcoin Aliases — Epicenter This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Sébastien Couture.
