In this episode of Maintainable, Robby welcomes Scott Hanselman, VP of Developer Community at Microsoft and host of the Hanselminutes Podcast, to discuss the emotional side of maintainable software. Scott shares his thoughts on fear as a common thread in poorly maintained software, the importance of building a team culture of trust, and how finding a good work-life balance helps create better software. The Role of Fear in Technical DebtScott believes that if you fear the software you work on, it's a tell-tale sign that it has maintainability issues.Technical debt is rooted in fear--either fear of making a change that will break something or fear of being unable to change something when needed. He encourages teams to talk openly about their fears and anxieties regarding the software and to consider what things give them confidence in the codebase.Building a Team Culture of ConfidenceScott emphasizes the importance of empathy in overcoming technical debt and making software more maintainable.Senior engineers and team leads have a responsibility to make junior developers feel safe enough to speak up and ask questions. He advocates for providing new hires with small, achievable tasks to build their confidence and trust in the software.Scott encourages teams to use "inner loop" and "outer loop" thinking.Inner loop - The cycle of making a change, hitting f5, and seeing changes immediately.Outer loop - Things like deploying the codebase, getting it tested, ensuring production stability. Both experienced and junior engineers have their own inner and outer loops as individuals, and continuous improvement at all levels is key.Overcoming Fear, Embracing Maintainability, and Finding BalanceScott shares stories about Microsoft's journey with open-source software and how that process has shaped the company's culture around maintainable code.He talks about the importance of striking a balance between source-opened and open-source software and finding the sweet spot for a project or organization.Scott warns against the trap of striving for unattainable perfection. Aiming for good, solid repeatable work over perfection ultimately yields better results. He uses his own projects, like the Hanselminutes podcast, as examples of focusing on consistent outputs and utilizing a simple workflow.Scott advocates for using AI tools to transcribe coding sessions, freeing up developers from extensive note-taking.Book Recommendation:The Daily Stoic By Ryan HolidayScott Hanselman - Personal WebsiteHanselminutes Podcast.NET Open Source History: .NET Core | Microsoft LearnHelpful Links:Scott Hanselman - Personal WebsiteHanselminutes Podcast.NET Open Source History: .NET Core | Microsoft LearnThanks to Our Sponsor!Turn hours of debugging into just minutes! Johnson also works with NVIDIA's Inception program, a virtual accelerator for AI and deep-learning startups. “It's kind of necessary to know the shape of the world to have a sense of where things are headed,” he said. “We ideally want to see around corners, we want to try to get there first, or at least, meet developers where they are.” Here's what we talked about: Why more AI founders should focus on fundamentals (1:50) How AI is leveling the playing field for non-technical founders (4:28) How to (and not to) recruit talent from the developer community (7:26) The dangers of digging your moat too early (9:41) Finding scalable problems customers want solved (11:30) Prioritize early spending on "saleable differentiation" (14:36) Top traits of successful AI founders (17:21) Benefits of NVIDIA's Inception program (22:11) Balancing customer feature requests with roadmap control (25:21) Why the rise of Gen AI is a transformational moment (28:21) Ozzy's advice for anyone interviewing at an AI startup (31:36) Thanks for listening! In this episode of Elixir Wizards, Xiang Ji and Nathan Hessler join hosts Sundi Myint and Owen Bickford to compare actor model implementation in Elixir, Ruby, and Clojure. In Elixir, the actor model is core to how the BEAM VM works, with lightweight processes communicating asynchronously via message passing. GenServers provide a common abstraction for building actors, handling messages, and maintaining internal state. In Ruby, the actor model is represented through Ractors, which currently map to OS threads. They discuss what we can learn by comparing models, understanding tradeoffs between VMs, languages, and concurrency primitives, and how this knowledge can help us choose the best tools for a project. Topics discussed in this episode: Difference between actor model and shared memory concurrency Isolation of actor state and communication via message passing BEAM VM design for high concurrency via lightweight processes GenServers as common abstraction for building stateful actors GenServer callbacks for message handling and state updates Agents as similar process abstraction to GenServers Shared state utilities like ETS for inter-process communication Global Interpreter Lock in older Ruby VMs Ractors as initial actor implementation in Ruby mapping to threads Planned improvements to Ruby concurrency in 3.3 Akka implementation of actor model on JVM using thread scheduling Limitations of shared memory concurrency on JVM Project Loom bringing lightweight processes to JVM Building GenServer behavior in Ruby using metaprogramming CSP model of communication using channels in Clojure Differences between BEAM scheduler and thread-based VMs Comparing Elixir to academic languages like Haskell Remote and theScore are hiring! "Evangelism comes from a Greek term, meaning bringing the good news. So fundamentally, what an evangelist does is bring the good news.  And so with Macintosh, the good news was that this personal computer can increase your creativity and productivity. The good news with Canva was that this product, it can increase your ability to communicate by a democratizing design. That's the good news. My podcast can help you become a remarkable person because you listen to what other remarkable people have done and how they did it. That's the good news of my podcast.  So what an evangelist does is bring the good news of his or her product. Now, this assumes that your product is good news.  So if you don't have a product that is good news, it's very hard to use evangelism to make it successful." - Guy Kawasaki   Fresh from the studio, we had an enlightening conversation with Guy Kawasaki, Chief Evangelist at Canva, who delved into the essence of product evangelism and revealed how the power of positive messaging propels Canva forward. Guy also dissected the transformative role of generative AI in democratizing design, explaining how it amplifies productivity and sparks greater creativity among users. To cap it off, he offered a glimpse into what great would look like for Canva's future trajectory. This week Joe is joined by Navy Veteran, Educator, and business owner, Bill Hoopes. Bill served for 16 years, finding success as a recruiter and ultimately reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Prior to his naval service,  Bill dropped out of high school to help his Mom with bills and earned his GED. It was during this time he first experienced the restaurant business and the daily challenges it brings. Now Bill is the owner of the first Capital Tacos franchise, a quick service restaurant brand that is expanding on local success. Bill shares the challenges he faced transitioning from active duty after 16 years of service and the experience of starting his own business; using his lessons learned from the Navy and leveraging his wife's skills as an educator.  Learn more about Capital Tacos here.  About Our Guest  Bill Hoopes opted for helping his mother pay the bills over school growing up. A decision he doesn't regret at all. Though, he did eventually choose to return to education, enrolling in culinary school to hone the craft of cuisine and good food. He took that passion for food to the Navy, where he served for nearly two decades, whipping up food for his fellow soldiers all along the way. He then took the discipline and rigors inherent to military culture to guide him in his next adventure - which was a journey of entrepreneurship. He took over a local softball business in Tampa, while working as a teacher alongside his wife. Our host, David Spinks, VP of Community at Bevy and Co-Founder of CMX, moderated the conversation. For the past fifteen years, Sarah has been growing and nurturing developer communities at various stages of growth, like Context IO, Keen IO, Shopify, Intel, and Mailchimp. Now, she leads Hubspot's broader developer community strategies. Today, Sarah shares what she's learned from working with these brands and the differences between the different kinds of developer communities that she's built. She also talks about how to get started in a community role, DEIB in building developer communities, and the balance of community capitalism. Who is this episode for? Community builders, community managers, community leaders, developers, and developers advocates. Timestamps: (00:49) - Intro to Sarah and her experience with developer communities (12:31) - Building a community from the ground up versus managing an existing one (16:55) - The difference between a developer community program and a developer advocacy program (19:06) - Setting up a healthy developer community based on context and the company (24:28) - How the developer community program at HubSpot stands out (28:18) - Why the community team should be the guiding light (35:00) - Auditing and improving a developer community program (48:33) - Working in a community in the world of capitalism (52:46) - Investing in DEIB in developer ecosystems (59:03) - Rapid-fire questions Notable Quotes: “The first question you need to ask is: does the developer community even make sense for this company?" “I feel like the community strategy is more about enabling developers to connect with each other, creating the spaces and clear pathways for that to happen. But, also understand what are the actions that you want to see developers taking in your community to get them more value and to bring more value back to the company.” “When the customer is the driver of the narrative, it's very hard to plug developers into that. But I think once you find that sweet spot and start to tell stories about how developers are impacting our customer's businesses, they love that too.” “I think community plays a big role in making things more equitable across the company because you're representing a good experience and a good journey for anyone in the community” Answers to rapid-fire questions: What's your favorite book to gift or recommend to others? The Business Value of Developer Relations by Mary Thengvall What's a community product you wish existed? Slack for communities. Who in the world of the community would you most like to take to lunch? Evan Hamilton, Director, Community and Customer Experience at Reddit What habit has had the most positive impact on your life? I think the habit of knowing when I'm done for maybe not the day, but at least for the hour. And just like slapping that laptop closed, stepping away, getting a break, drinking a glass of water. What's the weirdest community you've ever been a part of? So, I don't know if this is weird, but the way I kind of went about it was weird. So this is like 2002. I had been in love with pugs my whole life and I never had one. So I established the Montreal pug meetup group. What's one community engagement, tactic, or conversation starter that you like to use in your communities? “Where are you from?” If you could condense all of your life lessons into one Twitter-sized piece of advice to the rest of the world on how to live, what would that advice be? Care less about the things that you don't need to care about as much. Care about what matters because you only live once.
