This week we're joined again by Defensive BJJ coach and BJJMM fan-favorite guest Priit Mihkelson! In this episode, Priit discusses the importance of angles when defending from inferior positions. Priit explains concepts for finding the correct angle when defending from the bottom, such as maintaining a 45° angle relative to the floor after your legs have been cleared, and how "making a capital T" by positioning your body perpendicular to your opponent can prevent them from wrapping their arm around your head. Continuing to hone his skills, Rob was awarded his first degree on his black belt from the highly respected Priit Mihkelson, a testament to his technical proficiency. But Rob's expertise doesn't end there. As a BJJ Globetrotters coach, he has not only expanded his own knowledge but also had the privilege of sharing it with aspiring practitioners around the world. He has also earned a Black Shirt under the legendary Frank Shamrock, further showcasing his dedication to martial arts. Beyond his achievements in Jiu Jitsu, Rob has also ventured into the world of mixed martial arts, showcasing his skills inside the cage. Jay is also the primary host of the west coast location of The BJJ Globetrotters week long camp, which typically occurs twice a year. Let me preface this by saying I like Jay, I like Jay a lot. The minute I walked in his academy he was incredibly welcoming and when I was having trouble with a simple concept in one of the many sessions he was happy to assist. I was a solo traveling stranger there and he made this social/introvert a lot less nervous about being there. I loved this conversation, in the episode things get real, Jay shares with great transparency his insight into training methodologies, specific techniques, your game development, investing in yourself, and even some much appreciated personal stories. Creativity, movement, singing and dancing are ingrained in this guest and such attributes feel as if they have always been a part of her. Natasha Collazos is our guest for the first episode of 2022. We talked when she was in the midst of some international travel and what an indepth conversation we had together! You'll be drawn in to the exciting life she leads and the travel she's incorporated into her life. We talk about Covid and how that impacted her thought process…but she says the best perspective is being with those you care about the most. She teaches Thai massage and Thai yoga and her partner, Charles Harriott teaches Jujitsu … much international and with BJJ Globetrotters. They get to travel together and launch a life they love. She's a risk taker. You don't have to be confined in a box and she says fear should not stop people from living. We learn about Thai massage—energy lines and marma points -- to help sustain the flow of energy throughout your body. She compares it to a subway system of the body with the choices and junctures. We get to dive into how her career shaped and the opportunities opened. She sees purpose in what she does. Helping others acheive body awareness can truly help connect body and one's emotional self and that can lead to making impactful life decisions. We talk about coming into jiujitsu with a partner who is a black belt. How that feels on and off the mat. She never saw it as an intimidation factor, but Natasha puts more pressure on herself to forget she is new and learning. She says the journey is like a phoenix …where you break it down and build it back—time and time again. She started this path as her own journey and not for anyone else. The belts and her own journey make her tear up because of all the work she puts in as a whole. Natasha is a believer in self care. She focuses on the person in front of her in massage business, but that isn't focusing on herself and that is important too to check in with herself—from water intake, to rest, exercise, tea time to journaling. She takes stock and has a list of what she wants in life and is doing it for herself. We talk about gym loyalty and learning from across the board and the opportunities involved in travel. You bring something naturally to the table and there is an exchange with those with whom you train. A constant that Natasha deals with is having boundaries both to respectfully honor them and to set them. She's a giver and checking in with herself realizing how to set those boundaries takes extra work. Defining softness and being able to offer when appropriate and being mindful is okay to depend on one another. Tune in! Music "STOMP" used by permission of artist Donica Knight Holdman and Jim Huff
Steve Austin is a 2nd Degree Black Belt who is a Philadelphia native and is the owner and operator of Sion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Bucks County Pennsylvania. We discussed Steve's powerful story of how he was born with Legg Perthes (a degenerative disease affecting the hip) which required multiple surgeries into his teen years to address and made him the target of mental and physical bullies. A long interest in martial arts paired with a need for self-defense, Steve found Tae Kwon Do. Then Kempo. And finally Brazilian Jiujitsu. Through jiujitsu, Steve was able at last to find peace and a healthy outlet for the stress in his life. Steve received his brown and black belt from Alison Juca Brites. Over the years studying wresting and judo along with BJJ, Steve now trains with some of the biggest names in the industry; Henry Akins, Ryron and Rener Gracie, and Kroyler Gracie to name a few. He has competed in local tournaments such as Grapplers Quest, Naga, and The Goodfight, along with pro level events such as IBJJ, Metamoris Challenger and is currently a FIGHT TO WIN competitor. Throughout the years, Steve has built up a list of high-profile clients such as Maynard James Kennan, (lead singer of TOOL, A Perfect Circle, and Pusifer) Gil Sharone, (drummer for Marlyn Mason) and Hugh Fitzgerald, head BJJ instructor at 87Eleven Action Design which is responsible for the training and fight choreography of movies such as the John Wick series, and Atomic Blonde. Steve was able to branch out in 2014 and start his own gym called Sion BJJ in Southampton, PA. Sion has since turned into a brand for apparel and retreats around the world. Steve often teaches at other BJJ camps such as BJJ Globetrotters and hosts Sion's own jiujitsu retreats. Being a certified in GST (Gracie Survial Tactics) Steve works with local police in the Bucks County area. Sion also is a proud affiliate of Balance Studios in Fishtown.
Today on the show I have the pleasure of having a conversation with Jay Pages first degree Canadian Black Belt, Matthew McPeake. I had the honor of attending Matt's "Backpack Attacks" class at the 2021 Arizona BJJ Globetrotters camp. The efficacy of Matt's teaching and in particular his execution of the "backpack" concept is immediately evident. As soon as we started I knew this is something I needed to learn ASAP and this is someone who I need to study and keep an eye on going forward. In the episode, we learn about why Matt left his original academy as a Brown Belt, his path to becoming a BJJ Globetrotters instructor, how he went from Ronin to Black Belt, his holiday BJJ gift related suggestions, and so much more. Some housekeeping notes, this is another one of those episodes where we go deep into positional conversation and as such, I would highly recommend going to the Forever White Belt Facebook page to watch the corresponding videos posted there. In this episode, I'm super honored to have a personal bucket list guest of mine, Priit Mihkelson. Priit is an Estonian Black Belt under SBG founder, Matt Thorton, his second degree issued by Chris Haueter, and he's a member of the BJJ Globetrotters. I can't stress this enough, in my opinion, Priit is the most important mind, researcher, and possibly voice on defensive BJJ at present. His positional teachings have been quietly revolutionizing BJJ for years, if you are an older player, a smaller player, or just interested in improving your defense, Priit's material is a mandatory study. As I state in the episode, his take on the turtle should be one of the first things a white belt gets proficient at. His updated turtle position is akin to going from a time when we did not use wheels on luggage, to the day someone decided to put them on and the rest of us were left wondering why we did not do that all along. A few years ago I thought it a shame that more were not adopting his findings largely in part due to tradition, his sometimes curt delivery and just being ahead of his time. However, it seems the ice is thawing and people are finally getting on board with his defensive positions and concepts. Priit Michelson is best known as the founder of 'Defensive BJJ', along with his Estonian-blunt lessons at BJJ Globetrotters camps. One of the greatest minds in the sport at the moment, we speak to him about his system of BJJ, some of his personal history and philosophy, and dig into some issues of how Jiu Jitsu has been taught for many years.
Mike Currier is a lifelong athlete, gym owner, and regular instructor at the BJJ Globetrotters camps. He has featured on SUG, F2W and EBI so he's really reached the highest points in the sport and despite his age shows no sign of slowing down. We discuss with him how his unique history has shaped his views on BJJ, how he feels that teaching should happen and academies should be run, and the importance of failure in our development
Today on the show I have Sven Groten. I'm feeling more and more like one of those record store nerds who just has to find the diamond in the rough, the one who carefully curates his collection. From time to time you can find these in Jiu Jitsu as well and I feel I've found one in Sven Groten. He's a fantastic Jiu Jitsu thinker and teacher, I feel he brings tremendous insight and value to the community with his free videos, I highly suggest you check them out. Sven is also a European no gi competitor and co-owner of the Game Theory Academy in Cologne, Germany. He is a Luta Livre Black Belt and a BJJ Brown Belt, I'll leave the belt color explanation story to Sven in the conversation. He is also a regular instructor on the BJJ Globetrotters Circuit and is a professional special needs teacher. Some housekeeping notes, in the interview we refer to BJJ Globetrotters quite a bit and I've realized that some people have no idea what that is. They refer to themselves as, "A WORLD-WIDE COMMUNITY OF TRAVELERS AGAINST JIU JITSU POLITICS.”. I would say they are best know for putting on amazing Jiu Jitsu camps all over the world, in fact, I'm excited to attend my very first one in Arizona soon (more reports on that later). I talk to Christian Graugart who is the founder of BJJ Globetrotters, a community that runs seminars & camps around the world that discourages jiu-jitsu politics. We discuss the role of tribalism in BJJ and the benefits of thinking outside the box. The desire for social recognition that drives the need for many competition accomplishments and their recent issues with the IBJJF and their Beltchecker website as a possible alternative. Along with tips on training, teaching & building a friendly culture at your club.
Today's guest is Christian Graugart. Christian is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, author, and founder of BJJ Globetrotters. BJJ Globetrotters is the world's largest BJJ affiliation (of which I'm a member) with over 750 academies and over 21,000 members on the community's Facebook page. The BJJ Globetrotters 5-7 day long training camps have become some of the most sought after fixtures on the jiu-jitsu calendar – they're hosted everywhere from the Austrian Alps to the Arizona desert and the tropical island of Saint Barts. The mission of the community is simple: To continue spreading the message of a non-political, open minded and positive approach to training and life. Christian is originally from Denmark but currently lives in Saint Barts in the Caribbean. He started grappling in 1999, and in 2010 took an around the world trip to train Brazilian jiu-jitsu in as many places as possible. It took him to 56 academies around the globe in 140 days. It was this life-changing experience that led him to writing a book about the trip and eventually starting BJJ Globetrotters. In this interview, we get into Christian's martial arts background, the early days of jiu-jitsu in Europe, his around the world trip, and all things BJJ Globetrotters. Timestamps 00:02:55 Growing up in Denmark 00:04:30 Martial arts journey before jiu-jitsu 00:07:43 Discovering and starting jiu-jitsu 00:09:55 Training and competing in jiu-jitsu before his trip 00:13:51 Inspiration for his around the world jiu-jitsu trip 00:18:38 The around the world trip 00:24:37 Biggest takeaways from the trip 00:27:20 Returning from the trip 00:30:13 Inspiration for BJJ Globetrotters 00:33:55 BJJ Globetrotters community and camps 00:44:37 Moving to Saint Barts 00:47:00 Living in Saint Barts 00:49:00 Fascination with natural disasters 00:50:22 His contribution to jiu-jitsu 00:54:40 The day he got his black belt 00:55:55 His favorite submission 00:57:55 His daily routine 01:02:33 His driving force 01:03:39 He doesn't want to be anyone's life coach
On this episode of Combat Thoughts we chat to Abbie O'Toole, commonly known in the UK BJJ community as the armbar queen! She is a purple belt currently training out of RGA HQ in London and is an active competitor in both Gi and No-Gi competitions. We talk to her about her martial arts journey, competing, and attending a BJJ Globetrotters camp in Iceland! Make sure you stay until the end! Check us out on social media, and podcast streaming platform by following the link below:https://linktr.ee/combat_thoughtsThanks!
I talk to Chris Paines who describes himself as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt who has never done Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He started training submission grappling somewhat isolated from the larger BJJ scene in Staffordshire, England but began attending BJJ Globetrotters camps where he met Priit Mihkelson. It was at these camps where he was graded up and awarded his black belt by Priit. The unconventional way he learned made him forced him to emphasise understanding the concepts behind grappling, which he describes as a machine of physics and biology through which using concepts the techniques can emerge. We discuss these conceptual ideas and specifically his universal theory of guard which has him focusing on control points and applying other lessons from wrestling that has allowed him to progress. .
BJJ Globetrotters "offer an alternative to traditional affiliation within Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Membership of the community is open for anyone (both individuals and academies), and the main requirement to join is to spread—and agree with—our message. The members doesn't represent a specific person, academy, instructor or lineage. They are merely a world-wide community of people."The organization is perhaps most famous for it's world-traveling training camps that mix Jiu Jitsu with partying in some of the most soft-after vacation spots on the planet. The organization is run by Christian Graugart and he joined us for a discussion on jiu jitsu, how BJJ Globetrotters got started, what their mission is and a wide range of other topics. -You can find BJJ Globetrotters at: instagram.com/BJJGlobetrotters and www.bjjglobetrotters.com-Follow our show at: @That_JiuJitsu_Podcast or visit us at www.ThatJiuJitsuPodcast.com-You can watch the full video of this episode on our YouTube Page-Follow Justin directly: @JustinLesko -Follow Mike directly: @M_Callahan106Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thatjiujitsupodcast)
