Today, we have an exciting treat for you, a double guest interview! We are delighted to introduce the remarkable female co-founders of BOXFOX, a personalized, curated gift box company. Meet Chelsea Moore Shannon, the CEO, and Jenni Olivero, the COO. Chelsea and Jenni embarked on their entrepreneurial journey in 2014, alongside their friend and third co-founder, Sabena Suri. Their mission was clear: to foster stronger relationships through personal gifts, empowered by user-friendly experiences. Nearly eight years since its inception, BOXFOX's e-commerce site allows customers to choose expertly curated options or build the perfect gift box for any occasion using their proprietary "build a box" platform. Whether the gift is for personal or corporate purposes, each box is adorned with a heartfelt handwritten note before being shipped anywhere in the world. One quote from the BOXFOX website stands out: "Modern technology powers the box-box business, but it's also why our world needs companies like ours." We couldn't agree more. At Bridget, we understand the importance of nurturing relationships and fostering better communication in this technology-driven era. Join us as we explore the inspiring stories of Jenni and Chelsea, their entrepreneurial endeavors, and the valuable insights they've gained along the way. Stay tuned for an engaging conversation that will inspire and empower you. Head over to meetbridget.com for full show notes.
“Business, like life, is all about how you make people feel. It's that simple, and it's that hard.” —Danny Meyer, Setting the Table Danny Meyer is a famous restauranteur responsible for founding some of my favorite spots, including Gramercy Tavern, Eleven Madison Park, and the popular Shake Shack chain. He pioneered the philosophy of “enlightened hospitality.” That's the thing about engineering surprise and delight moments in your business. Like the example I share in this episode, while they may seem small or spontaneous, the best ones have intention and strong systems behind them. It's not hard to design a system to do this repeatedly and consistently for the people you love working with, encouraging more word of mouth referrals in the process, and reducing your reliance on marketing strategies that don't align. Today I'm sharing some examples of small gifts that make a big impact and leave a lasting impression on the people and clients you care most about.

In This Episode You’ll Hear About:How she discovered, that she really loved retail and how that was helpful as she began to build BOXFOXHow wanting to send a thoughtful and comforting gift box to a friend who was sick sparked the idea for BOXFOX when Chelsea and two good friends saw that there wasn’t really a great way to do this yetHow the three Co-Founders work together and get a long and how they worked to get ready for launch in 2014What companies Chelsea and her Co-Founders look for when building partnerships with brands that will be part of the platform for their boxes and why these characteristics are important to them and to their customersHow they managed to build this company without any investor help and what steps they took to stay the course and grow organically with self-funding and revenueHow they have navigated COVID, what positives and negatives came from it all, and how they continue to move forward with every job still in tact within the companyWhy partnerships BOXFOX has entered into with companies like Nordstrom, Anthropologie, The Bachelorette, Girlboss, and others have been impactful and meaningful What Chelsea looks for when hiring, what she’s learned as the company has grown, and what advice she has for othersTo Find Out More:Shopboxfox.comQuotes:“It is kind of interesting how certain qualities lend themselves to ending up being entrepreneurial, or you could just be straight up, I want to be an entrepreneur, and then those qualities, find you.”“We were not going to shut it down for anything. Like come hell or high water we were just going to keep going now with time. That was our attitude at the time.”“I remember we were like, “What are all the reasons and seasons?” Which is a phrase we use. And we are trying to figure out what was the need for people? And that's really what dictated the original curation.”“It's really important for us that they're utilitarian and useful products. They're not throwaway products, and they're well designed and beautiful and they come from companies run by good people.”“We had a phenomenal year in that sense because part of our ethos is being there when you can't physically be there. We've been saying that for six years and it just became super true last year.”“The management of people is really hard...that's stuff that weighs on us. And in a good way, like we care about it. But it is a lot of work, too.”“Honestly, putting my phone down when I get home, if I'm done for the day, I'm done for the day. And that alone will set me up for success the next day because I just feel refreshed and better.”“Being a manager means you're responsible for guiding and shepherding and advocating for the people that work for you.” “Being super open and honest with people, being super kind to one another, and also just empathetic... We're really pro humanity here.”“It's a lot of responsibility, but don't feel like you need to do everything at once. Nobody's an overnight success at all. I mean, there's so many things you need to get your ducks in a row when it comes to supply chain, operations, marketing. And it's OK if it takes a little bit of time.”

Thank you for tuning into "Starting Small", a podcast about brand development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the modern world. This episode is with Chelsea Moore, CEO and Co-Founder of BOXFOX. While working a tight job, a close friend of Chelsea's got sick, resulting in a stay in the hospital. Due to Chelsea's job, she was restricted on time, taking away from the opportunity to be there for her friend. To fill this void, Chelsea curated a gift box that was personable, instead of just flowers or items in a generic gift basket. This led to the inspiration to create BOXFOX as it is today, creating stronger relationships through personal gifts, powered by the simplest user experiences. Listen, as we talk about Chelsea's up-bringing, schooling, and journey with creating BOXFOX. Chelsea made the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2019 for the Retail and Commerce category. BOXFOX also made the 2020 Inc. 5000 list of America's Fastest-Growing Private Companies. Thank you for listening, and make sure to leave a review on your preferred platform! Sabena was born on Long Island and raised in the Bay Area. She realized her heart was in SoCal and traded in the City by the Bay for the sunnier skies of Los Angeles. Ever the USC over-achiever—student government chair by day and leadership fraternity by night—she was selected as a USC Global Fellow, earning a 3-month summer fellowship in Hong Kong with Burberry and graduated magna cum laude with a BA in PR. In 2014, Sabena and her two co-founders, Chelsea Moore and Jenni Olivero, were inspired to create BOXFOX, an LA-based e-commerce gifting company, with a clear mission: to create stronger relationships through beautiful and personal gifts, enabled by simple user experiences. The three women identified the need for a comprehensive gifting service that lets both consumers and corporations send high-quality, personalized gift boxes for any occasion. At BOXFOX, Sabena wears many (designer) hats, namely managing their Corporate Concierge program, driving B2B business development, and working closely with developers on site enhancements and solutions that are constantly improving their offerings. Chelsea Moore started BOXFOX, a personalized gift-giving platform, out of her tiny apartment in Southern California. Today, they're in a 20,000 square foot warehouse. But they started out scrappy. Fresh out of college and just 22, Chelsea has been focused on the brand's look and feel from the very beginning. And even though revenue today is in the millions, Chelsea is still really hands on – with everything from social media, to email, to packaging, to site design. And it shows.

Chelsea Moore is the co-founder of BoxFox, a high-quality gifting company. BoxFox is now a team of thirteen women all in their twenties and one team mascot Eleanor their dog. Two things that stand out for me with this company. One is obviously the growth. BoxFox has had record-setting growth in their sales in just three short years. On this episode of the Support of the Sexy, Sabena talks about taking risks, transitions into entrepreneurship and getting clear on your marketing and messaging.
My guest today is Chelsea Moore. At age 22, Chelsea co-founded a company called BOXFOX with two of her friends. BOXFOX is a cool, personalized gifting service they launched with the mission of connecting people and creating stronger relationships through giving. It's a unique service that allows you to put together a perfect gift, for any occasion. Each BOXFOX box is then hand packed and sealed with a written note before it's shipped. She and her friends started this company when they saw a gap in the lifestyle and services space. They wanted to be able to deliver a higher quality gift and make it easy for people too. Listen To The Podcast: To date the company has delivered over 45,000 boxes to over 20 different countries around the world! I do want to talk about the company, but the big reason I wanted to have Chelsea on was to talk about the idea of pursuing a dream with your friends, because that sounds awesome. And sometimes it's the absolute right thing to do. But going after dreams with your friends is not always easy. So I want to talk to her about how they've done it and what tips she has for clarifying the dream together. Deciding on how to go after it together and then just as importantly, maybe even more importantly, how do you stay the course. Especially with the wild twists and turns that can come with any dream journey. So I'm excited to have this conversation, let's get to it. Chelsea, welcome to Dream Think Do. Thank you so much. Absolutely. So how do you describe BOXFOX? We are a gifting company that specializes in bringing personalized and custom gift boxes to people everywhere. And our claim to fame is our Build a BOXFOX platform that enables you to build your own custom gift and care packages that are specifically created from all the best brands. It's all in one place, brought together for the specific recipient and the specific occasion. Anything from new moms to birthdays, to sympathy to get well, to just because, to congrats on your new job. The reasons are truly endless. We have taken that authenticity to scale with the corporate concierge B2B side of our business as well. We take the same care and detail oriented attention to detail for our corporate clients as well. That's cool. I have to say one of the great things about having a growing podcast is you get pitched by lots of different people. But we went and checked out your website and everybody was really impressed. You have a lot of different offerings but it just feels nice. It feels real like you said, it's a very personalized experience where you really can deliver something nicer than hey, sent you something through Amazon Prime. I love Amazon Prime but this is a different type of experience than that. How did it get started? What was the catalyst for the idea for you guys? I was about six months out of college in 2013 and a good friend of ours had been hospitalized. I was working crazy hours. I couldn't leave to go to five different of my favorite stores and the post office. I to put together something really thoughtful. I had the intention and the want and the need, but not the time. And so it sparked this idea – what do you do on those occasions when flowers don't cut it? Amazon Prime doesn't cut it. How do I put together a meaningful gift box or care package with the next level essentials that somebody actually would need in a specific situation? How do you physically be there for people when you can't actually go to them and be there? That's what sparked the idea of Build a BOXFOX. Being able to use our platform to create these custom perfect, well presented gifts in high quality, nude or black gift boxes, topped with your note handwritten by our fulfillment team. Personal, as if you had done it yourself. We make it easier, streamlined with all the best brands available to you. We launched with prepacked offerings because some people do like to shop that way and just tru...
