Joshua (Josh) Baldwin; Drummer/Artist joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey. Josh was born in to an artistic family and he spent much of his childhood drawing and reading art books. He began to learn the drums while attending Magill primary school which had a really strong music program run by Ruth Bone. His parents encouraged him to play and sent him to have lessons with Dennis Johnson. A couple of years later he received his first set of drums at the age of 10. After completing High School he studied music at the Elder Conservatorium. During his school years he played in a variety of ensemble's, including performances with James Morrison, Don Burrows and Grace Knight. His first regular band was an alternative/indie/rock band that began to play regularly around Adelaide in late 2006 called 'Masterthief'. Josh completed the Bachelor of Music Jazz Performance program in 2005 and was the recipient of an undergraduate Jazz Award for drums. He received 1st Class Honours in Music (Jazz Performance) in 2006, and in 2007 he was awarded the Adelaide City Council Award Most Outstanding Jazz Honours Graduate. Josh has established himself as one of Adelaide's leading drummers and has performed in concert with leading national and international jazz artists, including George Garzone, Jamie Oehlers and Paul Grabowksy (with whom he performed at the Adelaide Festival Centre for the launch of the Adelaide Festival of the Arts) and at a masterclass assisting Joel Frahm. Josh performed as part of the support act for the Brad Mehldau Trio at the 2009 Adelaide East End Jazz Festival. Josh completed a Law/Music double degree at the University of Adelaide in 2010 after which he moved to France, which inspired him to pursue art more seriously and eventually led him to establish a career as a full-time visual artist. Josh and his wife Colline spent quite a few years traveling between France and South Australia, when in France he worked as a full-time artist, and performing when he was back in his home town with a variety of ensembles including the Josh Baldwin Trio and Josh Baldwin band. Josh and his wife returned to Australia in 2017, he regularly performs with Big Wigs Trio, Gymkhana, 5-sided Cube, Lou Blackwell and the French Set, Surahn, Amelia Ryan and Michael Griffiths, Max Savage Blues Band, Adelaide Society Swing Orchestra, Karen DeNardi's Golden Boy Project, Mark Ferguson Trio, Kym Purling Trio, Max Grynchuk Big Band, and Christina Guala. Music: Intro "Band It About", written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. My guest today is a world renowned musician, course creator and author of a series of books from the acclaimed “Low Down Publishing” company, jazz bassist Danny Ziemann in the studio today. We're going to talk about how his bass playing took him from living in the freezing cold tundra that is northern New York, to living all the way, in the freezing cold tundra that is Vienna, Austria. OK, maybe Vienna isn't exactly a tundra, but everything seems freezing cold to me compared to southern California, so…there's that. If you've ever wondered what it might sound like to rework the bass lines of a Beethoven symphony, What Shostakovich and Count Basie were doing in the same classroom, Or if a person who started out as a heavy metal guitarist playing seedy bar gigs could transform into a world class jazz bassist, We are going to deal with all of that, and more. You're even going to find out exactly WHAT is fermenting in Danny's pantry, right at this very moment. Turn the treble all the way down and the bass all the way up, because it's time to talk with Danny Ziemann. Links Instagram: @danny.ziemann Facebook: Danny Ziemann Publishing: Low Down Publishing Website: www.dannyziemann.com Books/Recordings "I'm Old Fashioned", Jerome Kern, (Danny Ziemann Trio) Kind of Blue, Miles Davis Chet Baker Sings, Chet Baker Honesty Pill Links Free Resource Library Facebook Group Mailing List About Danny For Danny Ziemann, being a musician was inevitable. A native of Buffalo, New York, Danny's passion for music began at age nine with dreams of becoming a heavy metal guitar virtuoso. A couple of years later, though, he was introduced to jazz bass and that was the end of that. After hearing a Ray Brown recording, the steady pulse and sound of a walking bass line was hypnotic for him. The supportive role of the bass suited his personality while allowing him the freedom to improvise. Danny's love for music took him through a Bachelor's and Master's degree at the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Jeff Campbell, James Van Demark, and Bill Dobbins. After college, Danny was mentored by bass legend Larry Grenadier, a veteran of the Brad Mehldau Trio. As a professional jazz bassist, Danny performs internationally and records copiously. Right out of college, he was invited to tour with Gordon Webster and began touring with him internationally a few years later. In 2017, Danny was first bassist with the prestigious Focusyear Artist Diploma Band in Basel, Switzerland. There, he performed with acclaimed jazz artists such as Joshua Redman, Dave Holland, Steve Swallow, Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Becca Stevens. Recently, he had the pleasure of playing with Jorge Rossy, Sheila Jordan, Matt Wilson, and other icons of the jazz world. In addition to playing, Danny also teaches and writes books on jazz bass methods. Throughout his teaching career, Danny has encouraged and challenged students from a place of positivity to bring out the best of their musical abilities. Finding himself without adequate resources to teach his students, Danny took matters into his own hands and wrote his own series of books, receiving encouraging feedback from the bass community. This prompted Danny to found Low Down Publishing in order to continue producing books for music educators and independent learners. As if all that weren't enough, he also produced three video courses on performance as a tutor for the website Discover Double Bass. A highlight of his teaching career was in the fall of 2018, when he was interim professor of jazz bass at the Eastman School of Music. When Danny isn't being a musician, he practices latte art once or twice a day while indulging in his morning espresso ritual. For him, coffee provides balance. Or maybe that's just his excuse to hide a caffeine addiction.

Being able to sit down with outstanding artists and thinkers like Larry Grenadier is one of the true pleasures of doing this podcast. Larry is a longtime member of the Brad Mehldau Trio and Pat Metheny's group, and has recorded with Paul Motian, Charles Lloyd, Enrico Rava, Danilo Perez, Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and many others. I had the chance to check out Larry's mesmerizing headlining concert at the 2017 International Society of Bassists Convention, and I'm so thankful that we were able to catch up for this podcast! Check out Larry on Facebook as well as his own trio Fly, and look for his solo bass album in the near future. Here's the flow for this episode: Part 1 - Bay Area Years Part 2 - Technique Part 3 - Gear and Advice Check out more jazz artists on the podcast at contrabassconversations.com/jazz. Contrabass Conversations is sponsored by: The Upton Bass String Instrument Company. Upton’s Bostonian was conceived at the 2009 International Society of Double Bassists convention at State College, Pennsylvania, while world-renowned jazz bassist and Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas, Lynn Seaton and Upton Bass String Instrument Co. President and Founder, Gary Upton Birkhamshaw were playing and discussing the various instruments Upton Bass had created for the convention. They started with a blank sheet of paper, and together began jotting down Lynn’s preferences and suggestion with each model. The result was a rough outline of what would become the UB Bostonian Concert Double Bass.
