Speaking Podcast Social Media / Coaching My Other Podcasts + Donations https://bio.link/podcaster ==================== Bio of Naomi: Naomi Susan Isaacs has “led many lives” and practiced a variety of professions. Born 1943 in England, she first became a school teacher and a folk singer. After relocating to Munich, Germany in 1968, she spent many years in various industries learning “how the real world functions”. 1984 she followed her heart and awarded herself a sabbatical year in order to explore her chances of surviving in the world of music, which she had always wanted to join professionally. She freelanced as a jazz singer and singing teacher, and over the years expanded her activities as speaker, actor and inspirational coach, working internationally (Europe, USA, Asia) until 2019. The sabbatical year never ended. 1991 she founded the New Vocal Center for "workshops and tuition with, for and about the voice". Many famous singers (Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordan and more) visited to share their wisdom, experience and expertise. During the period from 1992 to 2016, she produced 5 CDs under her own name, published a short collection of songs and organized several cultural events, amongst them "Naomi's KulturSalon" which ran for nearly 5 years and attracted many well known celebrities from the city of Munich. 2018 saw the inauguration of the Institute of Charismology, where she and her associates create a safe space for people to explore their innate gifts and learn to follow their individual life path. Her Novel “Postkarte aus Bali … ein Kinderbuch für Erwachsene” which appeared in 2013, encompasses her philosophy of life and has moved adults and young people alike to examine their own values. Written originally with children in mind, it is the adults who report getting tears in their eyes, thus the title ".... a children's book for adults" (translation in progress) Now in semi-retirement, she continues to inspire people to identify their core gifts, to re-ignite the innocent eagerness of childhood, to live their true purpose and enthusiastically contribute to the growth of respect and empathy in the world. Within about a week of home quarantine in March 2020, pianist Emmet Cohen started live-streaming shows every Monday night from his apartment in Harlem. At first it was just Cohen and his bandmates, drummer Kyle Poole and bassist Russell Hall, set up in Cohen's living room. Eventually they started inviting guests, and Emmet's Place became one of the spots for live jazz in pandemic New York. Six months in, it had really caught on: the Emmet's Place performance of “La Vie en Rose” featuring singer Cyrille Aimée has over 4 million views on Youtube. Since then, Emmet's Place has become a kind of jazz incubator in New York; featured guests have included legends like Houston Person, Victor Lewis, Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Randy Brecker, Regina Carter, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, and dozens more. Cohen has one foot planted in the future and the other in the past. Maybe that's why he chose to call his most recent record Future Stride: as a nod to the stride piano that he loves and the modern world in which he lives. That tension between these two impulses, the old school and the new, is at the heart of the Emmet Cohen phenomenon. He's deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, and believes in the importance of oral history and intergenerational connection. When he was in his 20s (not so long ago!) he made a series of albums, live interviews, and performances featuring jazz masters Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Albert “Tootie” Heath, and George Coleman. He called it the Master Legacy Series. Meanwhile, he's an active digital citizen. He was quick to embrace streaming, NFTs, and direct-to-fan connection. (He offers a subscription service to his fans to support his work directly.) He's a product of the 21st century and he understands how to thrive in both physical and virtual space. We got together recently to talk about how he straddles the line between tradition and modernity, starting out as a prodigy in Miami, being a “repertory player,” his community in Harlem, “blues therapy” and the common lesson he learned from all his mentors. This show is being brought to you by www.gubbarum.com Jazz singer-songwriter Ori Dagan has attracted a dedicated and growing audience, both in his native Toronto and internationally. He brings a wry and agile sense of swing to everything he does, whether interpreting a standard, spinning a pop tune on its head or introducing his own original music and lyrics. His rich bass-baritone is unmistakable; his irreverent songcraft speaks to the lineage of Nat Cole novelty numbers and the impeccably swinging humor of the late Bob Dorough and Dave Frishberg. His scat singing has the natural, fluid, bop-inflected feel of the best in that idiom, inspired by heroines and heroes Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Anita O'Day and Sheila Jordan (with whom Dagan recorded a duet in 2017).
"I Remember April" Duke Jordan Trio: Two Loves (Steeplechase, 1973) ¿Sabías que?

At the age of 92 and still going strong, singer-songwriter Sheila Jordan has been one of the most revered and utterly unique voices in jazz for decades. Beginning with her debut album, 1963's Portrait of Sheila on Blue Note Records, she pioneered a bebop-inflected approach to singing accompanied only by solo bass (in that case, a duet with Steve Swallow on one of her signature tunes, Bobby Timmons' “Dat Dere”). Following the release of that album, however, Sheila retreated from the scene to concentrate on raising her daughter, working as a typist for the next two decades and not recording as a leader again for more than a dozen years. The never-before-released Comes Love: Lost Session 1960 thus adds a crucial new chapter to Jordan's remarkable story. Recorded on June 10, 1960 at New York's Olmsted Sound Studios for the little-known Chatam Records, the recently discovered studio date presents the singer in nascent but instantly recognizable form on a set of standards.Release by Colorado-based Capri Records on September 17, 2021, the album is otherwise shrouded in mystery: Jordan has no recollection of the date or the names of her accompanists, a nonetheless deftly attuned trio. Virginia Schenck, known by the stage name VA, is an accomplished international vocal artist and jazz performer, utilizing both straight-ahead, spoken word, and free improvisation. VA is an imaginative vocalist with a broad stylistic reach. She can soothe her audience with a beautiful ballad, invigorate them with a re-imagined standard and challenge them with a powerful blast of free improvisation. Yet all of these aspects exist within one singular and unique voice. VA often spices up her shows with world music influences from her own vocal exploration and CircleSinging, which she studied under the legendary Bobby McFerrin. Last year, she was honored to perform with McFerrin as part of his Atlanta, Ga., CircleSongs concert. In addition to performing with him, Virginia was handpicked to put together the exclusive 12-voice ensemble that led McFerrin's CircleSongs for the concert. Read more about that here. A Florida native, VA came to Georgia after graduating from Florida State University. While her degree was in Music Therapy, she studied jazz piano, voice and dance. She started singing jazz gigs while in school and continued to perform after she launched her music therapy career. Her love of jazz was enriched through a friendship with drummer Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers Band. Performing regularly in Atlanta’s top jazz and music venues, her recent appearances also include New York & Seattle for a play with totally improvised music, “The Gift”, with aerial dancers at The Robert Mondavi Ctr/UC-Davis, St Patrick’s Cathedral/Dublin, IR, Chartres Cathedral/France, Kripalu Yoga and Retreat Center, and Rome, Italy. VA has released three critically acclaimed albums, which showcase her artistry. Her debut CD, VA (2012), generated serious buzz with jazz fans, immediately receiving global airplay with such artists as 2012 NEA Jazz Master, Sheila Jordan, who exclaimed, “Wonderful CD… Wonderful singer!” Her CDs, Interior Notions (2015) and Aminata Moseka: an Abbey Lincoln Tribute (2017) have followed similar suit. Her fourth album, Battle Cry (2020), is set for release on January 3. This is a 1-track sample of this album. My guest today is a world renowned musician, course creator and author of a series of books from the acclaimed “Low Down Publishing” company, jazz bassist Danny Ziemann in the studio today. We're going to talk about how his bass playing took him from living in the freezing cold tundra that is northern New York, to living all the way, in the freezing cold tundra that is Vienna, Austria. OK, maybe Vienna isn't exactly a tundra, but everything seems freezing cold to me compared to southern California, so…there's that. If you've ever wondered what it might sound like to rework the bass lines of a Beethoven symphony, What Shostakovich and Count Basie were doing in the same classroom, Or if a person who started out as a heavy metal guitarist playing seedy bar gigs could transform into a world class jazz bassist, We are going to deal with all of that, and more. You're even going to find out exactly WHAT is fermenting in Danny's pantry, right at this very moment. Turn the treble all the way down and the bass all the way up, because it's time to talk with Danny Ziemann. Links Instagram: @danny.ziemann Facebook: Danny Ziemann Publishing: Low Down Publishing Website: www.dannyziemann.com Books/Recordings "I'm Old Fashioned", Jerome Kern, (Danny Ziemann Trio) Kind of Blue, Miles Davis Chet Baker Sings, Chet Baker Honesty Pill Links Free Resource Library Facebook Group Mailing List About Danny For Danny Ziemann, being a musician was inevitable. A native of Buffalo, New York, Danny's passion for music began at age nine with dreams of becoming a heavy metal guitar virtuoso. A couple of years later, though, he was introduced to jazz bass and that was the end of that. After hearing a Ray Brown recording, the steady pulse and sound of a walking bass line was hypnotic for him. The supportive role of the bass suited his personality while allowing him the freedom to improvise. Danny's love for music took him through a Bachelor's and Master's degree at the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Jeff Campbell, James Van Demark, and Bill Dobbins. After college, Danny was mentored by bass legend Larry Grenadier, a veteran of the Brad Mehldau Trio. As a professional jazz bassist, Danny performs internationally and records copiously. Right out of college, he was invited to tour with Gordon Webster and began touring with him internationally a few years later. In 2017, Danny was first bassist with the prestigious Focusyear Artist Diploma Band in Basel, Switzerland. There, he performed with acclaimed jazz artists such as Joshua Redman, Dave Holland, Steve Swallow, Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Becca Stevens. Recently, he had the pleasure of playing with Jorge Rossy, Sheila Jordan, Matt Wilson, and other icons of the jazz world. In addition to playing, Danny also teaches and writes books on jazz bass methods. Throughout his teaching career, Danny has encouraged and challenged students from a place of positivity to bring out the best of their musical abilities. Finding himself without adequate resources to teach his students, Danny took matters into his own hands and wrote his own series of books, receiving encouraging feedback from the bass community. This prompted Danny to found Low Down Publishing in order to continue producing books for music educators and independent learners. As if all that weren't enough, he also produced three video courses on performance as a tutor for the website Discover Double Bass. A highlight of his teaching career was in the fall of 2018, when he was interim professor of jazz bass at the Eastman School of Music. When Danny isn't being a musician, he practices latte art once or twice a day while indulging in his morning espresso ritual. For him, coffee provides balance. Or maybe that's just his excuse to hide a caffeine addiction.

Es el caso de Anita O’Day, Dinah Washington, June Christy, Etta Jones, Sheila Jordan, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, etc Tracklist (por orden de aparición): June Christy - Something Cool Doris Day - They Say It's Wonderful Carmen McRae - My One And Only Love Betty Carter - Moonlight In Vermont Abbey Lincoln - Ain't Nobody's Abbey Lincoln - Afro Blue Jeamne Lee - Summertime Teddi King - Old Folks Della Griffin - My Melancholy Baby Dakota Staton – Misty Lodi Carr - If I Should Lose You Annie Ross - Give Me The Simple Life Chris Connor - Feeling Good Sathima Bea Benjamin - Solitude
The Jazz Session celebrates its 500th episode with NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan. In this interview, Jordan talks about how a nickel changed her life; her early years on 52nd Street with Charlie Parker; her work with Steve Swallow and the poetry of Robert Creeley; her approach to ballads and teaching; and more. A Special Note: Five hundred episodes. Twelve years. The Jazz Session is, if I do say so myself, a one-of-a-kind archive of the past decade and more of this music. Hundreds of hours of stories by the people who create the music we love. I started this show in 2007 with no idea what I was doing, other than knowing I loved interviewing jazz musicians and thought other people might like it, too, if this whole podcasting thing ever caught on. When I started this show my older son was 4 and my younger son was not yet 1. Now both are over 6' tall and one is about to start college. And through all these years, all the moves, all the life changes, The Jazz Session has kept going. Now the question becomes, how much further can it go? And the only person who can answer that question is you. I'm only able to make this show because people like you make the switch from listeners to members. I'd like to be able to do so much more with The Jazz Session: more in-person interviews, more festival coverage, more travel. That's possible only if you decide that you value this show enough to support it. If you do, go to thejazzsession.com/join and become a member for $5 or $10 a month. You'll get bonus episodes, early access to every show, and more. Thank you for being here all these years. Now, become a part of the next 500 episodes by becoming a member.
