Joshua (Josh) Baldwin; Drummer/Artist joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey. Josh was born in to an artistic family and he spent much of his childhood drawing and reading art books. He began to learn the drums while attending Magill primary school which had a really strong music program run by Ruth Bone. His parents encouraged him to play and sent him to have lessons with Dennis Johnson. A couple of years later he received his first set of drums at the age of 10. After completing High School he studied music at the Elder Conservatorium. During his school years he played in a variety of ensemble's, including performances with James Morrison, Don Burrows and Grace Knight. His first regular band was an alternative/indie/rock band that began to play regularly around Adelaide in late 2006 called 'Masterthief'. Josh completed the Bachelor of Music Jazz Performance program in 2005 and was the recipient of an undergraduate Jazz Award for drums. He received 1st Class Honours in Music (Jazz Performance) in 2006, and in 2007 he was awarded the Adelaide City Council Award Most Outstanding Jazz Honours Graduate. Josh has established himself as one of Adelaide's leading drummers and has performed in concert with leading national and international jazz artists, including George Garzone, Jamie Oehlers and Paul Grabowksy (with whom he performed at the Adelaide Festival Centre for the launch of the Adelaide Festival of the Arts) and at a masterclass assisting Joel Frahm. Josh performed as part of the support act for the Brad Mehldau Trio at the 2009 Adelaide East End Jazz Festival. Josh completed a Law/Music double degree at the University of Adelaide in 2010 after which he moved to France, which inspired him to pursue art more seriously and eventually led him to establish a career as a full-time visual artist. Josh and his wife Colline spent quite a few years traveling between France and South Australia, when in France he worked as a full-time artist, and performing when he was back in his home town with a variety of ensembles including the Josh Baldwin Trio and Josh Baldwin band. Josh and his wife returned to Australia in 2017, he regularly performs with Big Wigs Trio, Gymkhana, 5-sided Cube, Lou Blackwell and the French Set, Surahn, Amelia Ryan and Michael Griffiths, Max Savage Blues Band, Adelaide Society Swing Orchestra, Karen DeNardi's Golden Boy Project, Mark Ferguson Trio, Kym Purling Trio, Max Grynchuk Big Band, and Christina Guala. Music: Intro "Band It About", written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro: "Belvedere" written by Joshua Baldwin which is track 3 off of his “Rockpools” album released in 2021. Joel Prime joins me from London to discuss his musical journey which began after he received his first set of drums for Christmas when he was three years old. He initially taught himself the basics, then began lessons with John Zac when he was 6, and by age 11, Joel was playing regular gigs. Joel's drumming prowess was immediately evident, and by being taught by many of Adelaide's elite drum educators, attending Marryatville High School, which offers a fabulous SIMC program, combined with a solid regime of practice, he soon developed his sparkling technique. Joel's acquired skill through hard work and persistence became his entrée card to a world of musical diversity. In his teens Joel was part of the Marryatville High School Stage Band, the group travelled for performances in London, New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and Sydney. These gigs paved the way for Joel to share the stage with such performers as Bob Mintzer, James Morrison, Bobby Shew, John Hoffman, Rhonda Burchmore, Jon Gordon, Tony Kofi, Alina Bzhezhinska, Ray Vega, Paul Bollenback, George Garzone and Pharoah Sanders. He was inspired to begin percussion after seeing his teacher Steve Todd performing together with his son Ben, in the popular Adelaide band 'Goose'. Joel took a break from studying music in the last 2 years of high school, and for a while was contemplating becoming a pilot, thankfully his love of music returned and he successfully auditioned for the The Elder Conservatorium of Music, at the University of Adelaide, where he was taught by another previous BAND IT ABOUT guest Laurie Kennedy. In 2005, he was awarded most outstanding percussionist at Generations in Jazz by James Morrison. In 2008, he received a prestigious performance award from Downbeat magazine (USA) as a member of the 2008 Adelaide University Big Band 1. Later that year, Joel received the Helpmann Academy Award for Jazz Drums, for graduating at the top of his class at the Elder Conservatorium in 2006 and 2007, then received the 2010 Helpmann Academy Award for most outstanding Honours graduate. Joel has led percussion workshops and performed at WOMADelaide, Glastonbury Festival, London Jazz Festival, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and The Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Joel's burgeoning skill set continues to be recognized by the drumming elite. Joel is currently endorsed by Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth drumsticks and Remo drumheads. In 2011 he won the award for Australia's Best Up and Coming Drummer (Open age category) at Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend. It was Joel's parents who initially floated the idea of him going overseas to expand his music career, and as he already had a British passport, moving to London was the obvious choice. Joel didn't know anyone in London, so it took a while for him to begin to get work, but once his talents were seen at the open jam nights that he was regularly attending, he began to receive job offers. Joel is a member of the critically acclaimed 'Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet', who have appeared at the Jazz Legend Festival in Birmingham and many other venues around the UK including top London jazz clubs The Crypt and The Vortex. They appeared at the London Jazz Festival 2017 in a triple bill performance along with Coltrane' s specialist Denys Baptist and the legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. Joel's versatility across congas, drum kit and all manner of Afro Cuban and Brazilian percussion now sees him performing with a vast array of ensembles across many musical styles. Joel also performs with 'Mr Little's Noisy Band' and 'London Street Band.' Music: "Band It About" theme song written & recorded by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. He is the leader of the Jon Herington Band and has been the guitarist of choice with the iconic band Steely Dan for both recording and touring since 1999. With the launch of Adult Entertainment, Jon now has five solo releases in his discography. His previous release, Time on My Hands, was nominated for Vintage Guitar Hall of Fame Album of the Year.In recent years Jon expanded into education and is currently offering instruction via TrueFire, the world's most comprehensive library of guitar instruction. The TrueFire Ear IQ series currently has two offerings, “Reactive Improvisation: Develop Big Ears and Powerful Improvisation Skills” and “Soloing Strategies: Creative and Harmonic Approaches for Crafting Solos”. In 2015, Jon released “Arrangements for Guitar”, a collection of 18 songs arranged for solo guitar, presenting the unique “chord melody” style of solo jazz guitar that impressed him as a young player.Jon's love for music surfaced early, and he studied piano, saxophone, and harmony in his grade school years. Just before his high school years, however, he developed a passion for pop music and the electric guitar, and soon was writing songs and performing with his own band near his New Jersey Shore home doing opening slots for local hero Bruce Springsteen, beginning a performing career that has continued ever since. College followed, with extensive musical studies in both classical and jazz composition and theory at Rutgers University, and private jazz guitar study, with the help of a National Endowment for the Arts grant, with the late, great jazz guitarist, Harry Leahey. Next came several years of study with the late Dennis Sandole, the acclaimed music teacher from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who once taught the late greats James Moody and John Coltrane.Jon's gigging life took a detour for about three years when he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, home to jazz guitar great Wes Montgomery. There Jon played jazz, with the many accomplished local players and former band-mates of Wes, including Wes's brother Buddy Montgomery, "Killer" Ray Appleton, "Pookie" Johnson, and organist and vocalist Terry Hayden, as well as the many talented young players who were students or residents in Indiana, including Jim Beard, Bob Hurst, Kenny Aronov, Chris Botti, and Shawn Pelton. Jon also began doing extensive session work at the time in several of the local studios and played on dozens of jingles and albums. After a return to the New York area, Jon began the challenging process of establishing a working life in New York. His work included performing with many different bands and for many Broadway shows, session recording, teaching, and an occasional writing or arranging job.Jon's debut release in 1992 titled The Complete Rhyming Dictionary (remastered and retitled as Pulse and Cadence) was an instrumental recording, showcasing eight of his own compositions as well as the brilliant playing of keyboardist Jim Beard, bassist Victor Bailey, drummer Peter Erskine, and percussionist Arto Tuncboyacian.Since late 1999, Jon has been the guitarist of choice with Steely Dan for both recording and touring. Jon has also toured with Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, Bette Midler, the Jim Beard group, The Blue Nile, Phoebe Snow, Madeleine Peyroux, Bobby Caldwell, Catherine Russell, Rob Morsberger, saxophonist Bill Evans, the contemporary jazz superband Chroma, Lucy Kaplansky, jazz/blues organ great Jack McDuff, and The Dukes of September (a supergroup featuring Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, and Michael McDonald). Some of Jon's recording highlights (aside from Adult Entertainment, Time On My Hands, shine (shine shine), Like So, and Pulse and Cadence) are the Walter Becker release Circus Money, the most recent Donald Fagen release Sunken Condos, as well as his prior release Morph the Cat, the Steely Dan albums Two Against Nature (Grammy Award Winner) and Everything Must Go, Jim Beard's five recordings (the first four co-produced by Jon), two Bill Evans records, Escape and Starfish and the Moon, Michael "Patches" Stewart's Penetration, Bob Berg's Riddles and Virtual Reality, Lucy Kaplansky's 10 Year Night, Michael Brecker's Now You See It...(Now You Don't), Randy Brecker's Toe to Toe, Victor Bailey's Bottoms Up, Chroma's Music on the Edge (with Mike Stern and others), Rob Morsberger's The End of Physics, Relativity [Blues], A Periodic Rush of Waves, The Chronicle of a Literal Man, Ghosts Before Breakfast, A Part of You, and the DVD Rob Morsberger Live, and Lynne Robyn's Red Bird in Snow, one of Jon's production efforts. Jon can also be seen on Steely Dan's live Two Against Nature DVD, the Making of Aja DVD from the “Classic Albums” series and the Dukes of September Live at Lincoln Center DVD. Jon's current work remains a combination of free-lancing as a guitarist and producer in New York, song-writing and band-leading work with his own group, and world-wide touring in support of some of the world's most renowned musical artists.

(Rec. 12 July 2020) Swedish Singer, Composer, Arranger  and Painter Sophie Duner has been making waves in international Jazz/Contemporary/Avantgarde circles with her uniquely blended sound uniting the romantic and the spiritually elevated with the bold dissonance of satire drenched in tense colours that resolve into unpredictable  scapes of expansion. Drawing heavily on a variety of composers like Kurt Weill, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Hans Werner Henze, Dizzy Gillespie & Stravinsky to create what has been described as 'Dúneresque' by Grammy Award winning Producer Michael Haas. NOTE: I mistakenly called this episode 62 throughout the episode. It is indeed episode 63. Jeff Schneider wants to share with you everything he knows about making music. His greatest fear is dying before uploading to the internet all of the things he’s learned over the past 20 years. Jeff hates the word talent. It downplays the power and necessity of hard work. It wasn’t until the summer after his freshman year in high school that Jeff showed any real promise or progress on the saxophone. It was in that summer that he started practicing eight hours a day, transposing Charlie Parker solos in all 12 keys. By the way, Charlie Parker practiced 15 hours a day. When he’s not making YouTube videos, Jeff teaches Skype lessons to people in time zones all over the world. It makes scheduling a welcomed challenge. He also composes music for film, television, and advertising with a client list that includes NASA, CNN, Google, Gatorade, Ferrari, and many more. Jeff is a DownBeat Magazine award winner and three-time recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. A graduate of New England Conservatory of Music (‘09), Jeff also holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging from UMASS Amherst (‘13). His teachers over the years include Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Will Vinson, John McNeil, Bob Moses, and the late, great Charlie Banacos.

In this episode of The Italian American Podcast, we speak with world champion accordionist Cory Pesaturo. We also interview Mary and Elise from the Italian Garden Project who are trying to preserve the wonderful gardening traditions of Italian-Americans via The Italian Garden Project. Cory Pesaturo (“C Pez”) is one of only four accordionists to win World Championships on both the acoustic and digital accordion, and is the only person to ever also win a world championship on jazz. He is a graduate of the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA, where he was the first musician ever to major and graduate in the accordion. Cory’s main contribution is his visionary thinking of how the accordion should be used, played, and presented in modern music. He has given a TED Talk about this, which is currently the only talk in the world about the accordion. Pesaturo's extensive resumé includes appearances at the White House for President and Mrs. Clinton on four different occasions, beggining at age 12, including eight other appearances for the Clintons since 2000 and 14 letters from the first family. On one of those occasions, he became the youngest person to ever perform at a State Dinner, performing with the Marine Strolling Strings for the President of Hungary. Some television appearances include the Late Show with David Letterman playing with Johnny Depp, the Columbus Day Parade in New York City and nationally televised programs in New Zealand, Canada, Italy, Tunisia, France and Finland. On an American broadcast, then-CNBC host Maria Bartiromo once said, “No one is currently doing more for the Accordion than Cory.” Cory currently gives master classes on both music theory and the accordion at various universities throughout the U.S. and Europe. A win at 16 years old in a concerto competition at the New England Conservatory of Music gave Pesaturo the rare opportunity to perform with the Brockton Symphony Orchestra as a featured soloist, where he became the youngest accordionist to ever solo with a symphony orchestra in the US back in 2003. Concerning his Jazz side, Cory recorded two CDs with saxophone legend George Garzone and his known band “The Fringe” at age 19 and has performed with jazz and music legends Quincy Jones and Wynton Marsalis. His performances at all three of his World Championships were played on accordions that were not his and were generally 90% improvised; both aspects are unheard of in the accordion world.
