Who are the ‘Great Pretenders'? These are babies born between 34 and 38 plus 6 weeks. They might be multiples, pre-term babies, late pre-term babies or early term babies. Lactation Consultant Kathryn Stagg calls these babies the Great Pretenders. They might appear to be ‘full term', but often struggle to establish breastfeeding because of their prematurity. In this episode, Kathryn helps me explore the challenges and joys of these babies. We talk about the hospital experience, techniques to try to ensure that sleepy babies receive enough milk, and how to support breastfeeding going forward. My new book, ‘Supporting the Transition from Breastfeeding: a Guide to Weaning for Professionals, Supporters and Parents', is out now.You can get 10% off the book at the Jessica Kingsley press website, that's uk.jkp.com using the code MMPE10 at checkout.Follow me on Twitter @MakesMilk and on Instagram @emmapickettibclc or find out more on my website www.emmapickettbreastfeedingsupport.comKathryn Stagg IBCLC is an author and founder of an amazing charity, Breastfeeding Twins and Triplets UK. In this episode I share my struggle with breastfeeding and decision to exclusively pump, and the toll the first 72 hours postpartum, aka “the baby blues” took on me mentally, physically, and emotionally. I hope this episode helps any new moms who are putting SO much pressure on themselves to breastfeed just like I was, and can't wait to continue to share how the exclusive pumping experience plays out. Thank you for being such a supportive and loving community. I feel so comfortable sharing all of the ups and downs of this new motherhood journey with you because of it
I start this heart to heart off with a brief BTS biz update and how my perspective on goal setting and making business plans has completely changed since having these boys only two and a half weeks ago. Then I dive into my struggle with breastfeeding and decision to exclusively pump, and the toll the first 72 hours postpartum, aka “the baby blues” took on me mentally, physically, and emotionally. Thank you for being such a supportive and loving community. I feel so comfortable sharing all of the ups and downs of this new motherhood journey with you because of it
Following on from her birth story in episode 419, Leila shares her early postpartum experience with twins. She organised a foundation of strong and trustworthy support including private midwifery care, a postpartum doula and a meal train involving her closest friends. Despite her preparation she still had moments of overwhelm; the sheer amount of hours required to feed and settle twins is significant and it left very little space for anything else. She takes us through the importance of ready-made meals, her breastfeeding challenges, the upheaval of an unexpected hospital admission and the discovery of a prolapse at four months postpartum. Leila also shares her twin-mum must-haves so if you're pregnant with multiples, you'll love this episode.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Having a supportive partner in pregnancy is so important when you are giving birth for the first time, especially if you are giving birth to twins! Not only do you need another set of hands, but the emotional toll it takes to care for two little ones at the same time can become overwhelming. Add in a pandemic to make matters even more challenging, the situation goes from needing support, to it being absolutely crucial. This was the case for our guest on today's episode. Sarah is a mother of twins and has been married to her incredibly supportive husband for 9 years. Their pregnancy journey was unique since they gave birth to twins in the thick of the pandemic. Sarah had a birth plan in place, and had planned on having a doula present during her pregnancy. However, due to the pandemic, everything went out the window, but with her willingness to not quit and her husband's intuitive helping hand, she was able to make it through. In today's episode, Sarah shares her story of her breastfeeding journey where information and support from health care providers was sparse, and she was left to figure it out on her own. Thankfully after a 90 minute appointment with a lactation consultant, things turned around for her. Tune in to hear a story of teamwork between partners and the power of will in the pursuit of breastfeeding. Topics discussed in this episode: Sarah's minimal experience with breastfeeding and babies prior to pregnancy Why Lo always ask guest's about their breastfeeding exposure Sarah's experience giving birth to twins during the pandemic How Sarah educated herself about baby's tummy size Sarah's need for a doula How Sarah's breastfeeding experience would go if she received proper care How an IBCLC changed Sarah's breastfeeding experience The difficulty dealing with insurance companies The societal impact on breastfeeding How much time was spent feeding in the first few months The ways Sarah was supported by her husband When Sarah decided to start pumping Sarah's experience going back to work and having the twins in daycare How Sarah's twins weaned off breastfeeding Head to Apple Podcasts or Spotify for more episodes! Our special guest on the podcast this week is IBCLC and holistic sleep coach Kathryn Stagg, who set up and runs the Breastfeeding Twins and Triplets UK charity. Kathryn specialises in feeding multiples, and she herself is a parent four boys including identical twins. The UK remains one of the countries with the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world. As the previous generation began to acquiesce to the new accepted medicalised paradigm when it came to raising children, this did, unfortunately, filter down into following generations, with women choosing to breastfeed less and less. However, we are now starting to see an increase in breastfeeding again, perhaps because of the rise in the wellbeing movement alongside the access we now have to information highlighting the importance of breastfeeding for the long-term physical and emotional health of both mother and baby. It's a contentious subject, but one that is so important to address. If most women aren't being made aware of the life-changing benefits of breastfeeding, perhaps they'll make their choices based on that. As always with Healthy Happy Home, our intention is to bring you information that enables you to make decisions from a place of informed choice. In this episode we speak to Kathryn Stagg IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). Alongside her breastfeeding support, Kathryn also offers holistic sleep support. We touch on every facet of breastfeeding, from why some mums choose not to, what problems we could encounter as new mums, how to avoid and prevent some issues, how to overcome others, what situation means a women really can't breastfeed, the science behind what breastfeeding does for the baby and the mother, the ingredients in breastmilk and the difference between breast milk and formula. We also spoke about feeding twins and triplets, as Kathryn supports many women feeding multiples, through her Facebook group and charity, Breastfeeding Twins and Triplets UK. For any expectant mothers listening, this episode will help you understand the nuances behind this much-debated subject, and will hopefully help you to make a decision you are happy with. Got milk? Today's topic goes WAY beyond the basics of breastfeeding. We'll be talking about building up a supply, what's a tongue tie and how do we fix it, why is breast REALLY best? Today we dig into some tough and fascinating topics all around twins breastfeeding. Judy Teibloom-Mishkin, our guest today is an IBCLC with Chicago's amazing group Lactation Partners. With over two decades of twins breastfeeding experience, Judy has not only seen it all, but she knows how to handle the challenging struggles that come along with breastfeeding two. She's also so inspiring and motivating that you'll happily continue your breastfeeding twins journey with your head full of why it's the best thing to do for your twinnies. Judy Teibloom-Mishkin, RN, IBCLC, has been professionally committed to supporting new families for 29 years. She currently works in private practice as a lactation consultant, and has done so for the last 25 years. Her mission is to nurture mothers and fathers as they transition into their new roles as parents, so that they have the resources available to them to nurture their newborns. This is the doula model which she learned while working as a doula in private practice and in public health for 10 years. She is guided by the values of supporting maternal choice, providing practical strategies to surviving the exhaustion of the early days at home, and facilitating the process of attachment between parents and newborns. Judy graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in political science, and from Northwestern University with a BS in nursing. She was board certified as a lactation consultant in 1992 has maintained her certification every 5 years since that time. She is a licensed RN in Illinois. She is a mother of three boys which is never to be underestimated in contributing to her experience and wisdom! She never stops learning from her colleagues, Elizabeth and Joan, and from her clients who teach her something new every day.
