In this episode of The Go-To Mise en Place, we sit down with Samyukta Nair, the powerhouse behind London's boldest and most elegant dining destinations. As the creative director of LSL Capital, she's responsible for a growing portfolio of restaurants that blend storytelling, design, and deeply personal heritage — from the Michelin-starred Jamavar to the vibrant, cinematic Bombay Bustle, the maximalist charm of MiMi Mei Fair, and the newly launched KOYN, Elenas, and Élan.We delve into Samyukta's journey from the family-run Leela hotel group in India to launching her first solo concepts in London. She shares what it was like entering the restaurant world on her own terms, how she approaches each venue like a film set with its own narrative, and why her late grandfather remains a guiding force in her decision-making.Expect reflections on the power of instinct over trend, how she builds restaurants with longevity in mind, and what she's learned about balancing creative ambition with operational excellence. We also talk about the making of KOYN, her most personal project to date, inspired by her time in Tokyo, as well as her bold move into Mayfair nightlife with the newly opened Koyn Thai and Nipotina. This is a wide-ranging conversation with one of the most visionary and quietly influential figures in hospitality today — and a rare look behind the scenes of London's most theatrical dining rooms.---------Please leave us a great rating and a comment and share it with your friends - it really helps us grow as a show.If you're in the industry and are looking for the greatest POS system in the world than look no further as Blinq are tearing up the rulebook—no long-term contracts, no hidden fees, and no per-device charges. Send us a textArnie is joined by Glenn Landrum to continue the discussion of the literal and figurative aspects of the Bible. This episode begins by noting some helpful hints on how to distinguish between literal and figurative expressions in the Bible. We shouldn't make up our minds prematurely on a particular subject without considering the context of it. The time that the Pharisees misrepresented Moses as commanding divorce is discussed at length. Sometimes Jesus or one of the writers tells us which figure of speech is being used, whether it is a parable or an allegory. That is discussed. We ought to note how the inspired writers or speakers treat an event recorded in the Bible. Jesus speaking about Moses at the burning bush and the Hebrew writer noting Noah and the flood is looked at. We discuss Jotham's fable to show some of the figurative language found in the Bible and how to understand it. A good guide to follow is what someone has been quoted as saying, which is, "The sense that makes the most sense is the correct sense." There is a little bit more that needs to be said about this subject, so we will complete it in the next episode. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript of this Buzzsprout episode for your convenience.

#152 | 1 Samuel: Israel Asks for A King - Prematurely

OneLife Nashville: Rare but vital conversations about Jesus

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2024 23:19

In this episode, we discuss one of the most pivotal moments in Israel's history: their request for a king as recorded in 1 Samuel 8:1-9. This moment marks a significant turning point, not just in Israel's political structure, but in their spiritual journey as a nation, as well. Many have misunderstood this episode as God rejecting the very idea of kingship in Israel. However, as we'll explore, kingship had always been part of God's plan, embedded in His covenant promises to Abraham, Jacob, and Judah. The problem wasn't the request for a king itself, but the timing and motivation behind it. Much like Adam and Eve's decision to prematurely eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Israel's demand for a king was driven by a desire to be like the nations around them, revealing a deeper issue of idolatry. Samuel sums up their request as a rejection of God's kingship—a longing for a substitute that could replace God's presence and rule in their lives. We then draw a connection to the New Testament, where Jesus faced a similar temptation in John 6. The crowds wanted to make Him king by force, but Jesus, in His wisdom, resisted a premature ascent to kingship. Instead, He submitted to the Father's appointed time and way for installing him as king, going through the necessary developmental process that would lead Him to the cross and ultimately to His resurrection as the true King of Israel. In our next episode, we'll explore God's ideal vision for kingship in Israel—one that stood in stark contrast to the nations around them—and discuss the implications for our understanding of the kingship of Jesus in the New Testament. You see the reports in the news all the time, a patient on life support has given the “gift of life” by donating organs. Few people realize but organ donors needs to be alive to do this.  Hospitals can legally declare people with a brain death diagnosis allowing them to take their vital organs for transplant.  Dr. Heidi Klessig is author of The Brain Death Fallacy.  She discusses whether brain death is irreversible and how the organ transplant business has grown since the decision in 1968 to include brain function in the legal definition of death. Klessig: “People defined to be brain dead or dead by neurological criteria have beating hearts, digest food, excrete urine, and even gestate pregnancies and deliver healthy babies. These people are not biologically dead, and their spirits have not departed. Brain death is not death. Many people who were diagnosed as being brain dead have recovered. If brain death was real death, people should not recover even once.” Klessig also discusses the Uniform Declaration of Death Act, and how New Jersey is the only state that allow families to demand treatment for patients declared “brain dead.”  Patients and families can take measures before a crisis to make sure hospitals do not violate their wishes when it comes to life and death issues.  For more information, see respectforhumanlife.org
