Dr. Dan and pediatrician (and mother of four) Dr. Shelly Vaziri Flais discuss the tools parents need to start the lifelong process of raising their boys into men who are mentally healthy, empathetic, and committed to gender equality. Dr. Flais explains concrete techniques for parents to push back against cultural stereotypes and toxic masculinity as they nurture their sons. Because “kids do as they see,” the work of being role models for gender equality starts in the home. This conversation-starter episode emphasizes the benefits of gender equality for boys and girls and men and women, and discusses it not only in the context of the family, but also the extended family, school, and greater community. The interview is inspired by Shelly's book American Academy of Pediatrics' Nurturing Boys to Be Better Men: Gender Equality Starts at Home. Shelly Vaziri Flais, MD, FAAP, is a board-certified practicing pediatrician, mother of three sons and one daughter, and an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Ann & Robert H. Life is filled with roles that are neither made for men nor women. The household for instance, is a place that needs human labor. But how do we break the stereotypes that we've grown up with and knock down the walls of gender equity in the home and at work? Joining me to talk about this important topic as well as her new book is Dr. Shelly Vaziri Flais. Shelly is a board-certified practicing pediatrician, the mother of 3 sons and 1 daughter, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. She is the author of Raising Twins, Editor in Chief of Caring for Your School-Age Child, and co-editor of The Big Book of Symptoms. She is an American Academy of Pediatrics spokesperson and frequent media contributor Listen as she shares her thoughts on everything from modeling equitable behavior at home, why she was happy to be the “hangout house” for her kids and their friends, and why the change we want to see in the world starts in our homes. If you are raising children, whether they are boys or girls, you'll want to listen in. Also, don't forget to grab a copy of her new book, Nurturing Boys to Be Better Men. In this episode, we discuss: What inspired Shelly to write her latest book Her thoughts on ways that bigger families lean into more well-rounded kids and adults Ways to include your kids in the tasks of the household What it means to model equitable behavior at home Why it's important to also model equitable roles in the workplace Resources: About Shelly - https://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/faculty-profiles/az/profile.html?xid=27113 Nurturing Boys to Be Better Men by Shelly Vziri Flais, MD, FAAP - https://www.aap.org/Nurturing-Boys-to-Be-Better-Men-Paperback Discount Codes from Our Sponsors: Copilot - https://go.mycopilot.com/lynzy - for a 14-Day Free Trial with your own personal trainer Questions: What inspired you to write your latest book? Have you ever wondered how the power of faith could help you navigate through life's most challenging storms? Our latest episode offers a deeply moving conversation with one such father who has done just that. Meet Clay, father to identical twins with severe autism and intellectual disabilities, who shares his journey on raising his children, the grief process he and his late wife experienced, and how they chose to focus on their children's growth and development rather than the cause of their disability. And if you're curious, he also reveals his favorite movie, Top Gun, and explains why it strikes a chord with him. This heartfelt talk also delves into Clay's struggle of finding an inclusive church and community that could provide the support his family needed. His experiences underline the importance of maintaining a positive outlook, even when the going gets tough. He emphasizes the importance of learning from our blunders, minimizing potential damage and, most importantly, choosing happiness. His insights on accessing disability services and the role of community-based programs are invaluable. In our final chat segment, Clay discusses the importance of perseverance, faith, and prayer in overcoming life's challenges. He touches on the value of having a supportive community to lean on and how acknowledging and embracing difficult times can be a stepping stone to a brighter future. This episode is a testament to resilience, faith, and finding purpose in disabilities. In this interview I talk with professional ice and mixed climber, Majka Burhardt, about her new book, More. In it, she describes the transition she went through from being a full-time pro climber to having twins and balancing her life with her two children as a new part of it. The book is a compilation of letters she wrote to her kids through the first 6 years of their lives about the emotional rollercoaster she went on trying to balance it all. Not only is Majka a climber and a mother, she also founded an international non-profit called Legado that works with indigenous cultures to make sure they have what they need for their communities and their environments to thrive. We discuss how she makes time for all of the things she juggles in her life so successfully. We talk about how motherhood changed her life as a climber, how it affected her relationship with her husband, and how she's grown from it. We talk about how female climbers have very few rolemodels for how to be a climber and a mother and make it all work, and we talk about how her parenting style is so different from what she received as a child (it's really quite progressive). This was a super inspirational conversation, and if you're a parent or an aspiring parent, Majka's wise words will likely resonate with you.

After many years they were the positive result after four rounds of IVF and although still shocked it was twins, it was a welcome miracle. After having the boys she went back to work part-time and also decided to set up a business called Just4twins. There didn't seem to be many UK-based websites for twin parents so she took the leap and set one up. And during Covid with another fellow twin mum, Melanie set up a twin support group called Multipals. I remember sobbing on the sidewalk with two screaming babies on my chest because I couldn't figure out how to close my stroller (a UPS man eventually carried my stroller in for me) and then, a few months later, I could get the stroller and babies out no problem! I like thinking back on that moment and reminding myself that everything in twin parenting is like that -- I'll eventually figure it out. 2) I tell myself that my twins are learning to be more patient and gracious little people by constantly having to wait their turn! I hate the feeling of being divided as a mother, but I'm hopeful that they are learning useful life skills very, very early. 3) It's super helpful to have one child with an "L" name, because forevermore Lily's items will always be stored on the LEFT. The same would be true for an R name. Or even better, choose two names that start with L and R. I didn't think of that until it was too late :)
