After a brief memorial to the late Tenzin Robert Thurman, Ethan welcomes author and seeker Erica Bassani to discuss her new book, Women in Love with the Divine. Erica's book explores what it means to be a woman committed to a relationship with the sacred in today's world. On a quest to answer this question for herself, Erica Bassani shares stories from her encounters with a dozen women spiritual teachers from Buddhist, Taoist, Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and Nondual traditions. They discuss her own spiritual journey, beginning with the study of the earliest Buddhist teachings, and explore her encounters and interviews with women wisdom holders from a wide variety of traditions. Erica Bassani is a writer based in Italy, and the author of the recently released Women in Love with the Divine. A graduate of the Academy of Storytelling in Turin, she spent a year living in a Theravadan Buddhist monastery at the age of 23. Since then, she has turned to female spiritual teachers from diverse traditions to help her navigate her inner journey. She created the Women Awakening Project—an initiative that highlights the wisdom of female spiritual role models and explores spiritual practice through the lens of women's experiences—to share their wisdom and create a bridge between generations of seekers. Bassani is also the Italian translator of The Four Noble Truths of Love by Susan Piver. I really needed in that time of my life, I was going through personal crisis and spiritual crisis, I realized all my teachers had been men. Which, I am very grateful to them, but at that point I started really needing female role models, the examples of women who are today in this world doing the spiritual life." –Erica BassaniAbout Erica Bassani:Erica Bassani is a writer based in Italy. They followed more the masculine way, the patriarchal way of getting to power. This, of course, creates a very weird shift inside. It creates suffering ultimately because of a disconnection with where actually is the source of power in us, especially as women, and possibly for men as well. The source of power can be in the heart, can be more embodied and exclusive, more aware of the different parts of the situation instead of this focused way which cuts out many other things, it's a more gentler way.” –Erica BassaniSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

You can't breathe in the past or the future, and you can't switch off thinking on command. That's where Susan Piver brings a refreshing kind of relief to meditation practice, especially if you've ever judged yourself for having a busy mind. We talk about Shamatha Vipassana, the mindfulness awareness approach she teaches, and why the real skill is not perfect focus but the simple act of noticing and returning. We also get practical about what mindfulness is and what it is not. Mindfulness is the trainable part: placing attention where you choose and coming back when it wanders. Awareness is the wider field that opens over time, often on its own. Susan shares why insight lives in awareness, why deeper practice can make us feel more (sometimes unexpectedly), and why teachers should expect inner states to shift in ways that do not follow a tidy script.Along the way, we touch on what science can measure like stress and cortisol, insomnia support, and reduced depression relapse when paired with other care, while also honoring the contemplative side that doesn't fit neatly in a chart. If you teach mindfulness, support clients, or simply want a kinder relationship with your own mind, this conversation gives you a clear frame you can use immediately. What happens when two powerful paths—Buddhism and the Enneagram—sit down for a conversation? In this episode, Ian welcomes author and Buddhist teacher Susan Piver (The Buddhist Enneagram) to explore the overlap between these two systems. Susan's new book, The Buddhist Enneagram, offers a fresh lens on personality—not as something to fix, but as something to understand, soften, and ultimately hold with compassion. This conversation goes beyond personality labels and into something deeper: How your patterns form, why they stick, and how awareness—not willpower—is what actually creates change. If you've ever felt stuck in your reactions, overwhelmed by your emotions, or quietly convinced you're "doing life wrong," this episode offers a different path forward. Together, they unpack: How the Enneagram and Buddhism overlap (and where they challenge each other) The difference between mindfulness and awareness (and why both matter) How meditation helps you notice your reactions without being ruled by them Why trying to "fix yourself" often backfires—and what works instead How Enneagram subtypes shape conflict, connection, and relationships As always, this isn't about becoming someone else. It's about becoming more fully who you already are—with a little more grace along the way.     About Susan Piver Susan Piver is a Buddhist teacher, meditation instructor, and author of The Buddhist Enneagram. Susan Piver, meditation teacher and writer of the nuanced book The Buddhist Enneagram, merges concepts of Buddhism and Enneagram, emphasizing how the Enneagram is a spiritual tool and not a self-help program, personality typer, or life hack. She talks of our 3 centers of intelligence (mental/head triad-delusion, heart/emotional triad-grasping, and body/instinct triad-aggression) as the 3 poisons. And arrows of integration and disintegration as peaceful and wrathful deities. We just grazed the early chapters of her very helpful book, with my dog Wendell repeatedly groaning in her lap. There is much more to dig into. Also, when I talk about “centering” myself in this podcast, I am talking about the compulsion to see myself as the center of my experience. I am not talking about centering prayer or grounding oneself. I am literally talking about overfocusing on self and individual identity.End music is by artists Adam Hilton and Henna Chou created in collaboration with my exhibition Treespell (3:35pm, clearing not far from camp on the album Forest Meditation)

Susan Piver is the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, an internationally renowned Buddhist meditation teacher and public speaker, and former record industry professional, having worked at legendary independent Hip-Hop label Tommy Boy, as well as Rounder Records where she helped Alison Krauss achieve a Platinum album. Susan has been a guest on Oprah twice, has been a speaker at Harvard and Google, and founded the worlds largest online only meditation center - The Open Heart Project. But as she shares throughout the course of this highly engaging conversation with Jaymee, all of these accomplishments pale in comparison to her eventually discovering the writings and teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (posthumously), which indirectly led to a life-altering encounter with Shambhala Publications founder Samuel Bercholz, who became her Tibetan Buddhist teacher (and still is to this day). Jaymee surprises Susan with an (unannounced) pop in visit from Samuel deep into an episode that has been rank with generous smatterings of praise and tears of gratitude shed by her prior to his arrival, creating a sincere moment of magic for her on the anniversary of a car accident that almost took her life. Or, ummmm, what's the enneagram?!Well, no matter where you fall on that spectrum, good news. You're about to discover one of the most powerful personal insight tools ever created, AND in a way you've never heard it explained before. In the last couple of years, many people have been extolling the virtues of something called the "Enneagram" but—what the hell is it? On today's show, longtime dharma teacher, Susan Piver, is here to demystify it. As she explains, the Enneagram is a tool that allows people to figure out their personality type and says it has been one of, if not the most important, tool in her personal development. Piver has been a student of Buddhism since 1995, graduated from a Buddhist seminary in 2004 and was authorized to teach meditation in 2005. In 2012, she founded The Open Heart Project— the world's largest online-only meditation center. She's written ten books including her latest called The Buddhist Enneagram: Nine Paths to Warriorship. In this episode we talk about:What the Enneagram is and why Piver finds it so helpfulWhat she means by warriorshipThe nine personality types, which she views as maps of our blind spotsWhy, unlike other personality systems, there is no test for the Enneagram (at least in Susan's view)And we talk about why Susan thinks the Enneagram and Buddhism mix so well even though on first blush it would seem to contradict the dharmic emphasis on the self being an illusionFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/susan-piver-495See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
