To be a true reflection of God now, a true mirror, an image bearer of God now, in the world now, and to actually share in His purpose as an ambassador, a reflection of God. 2 Corinthians 5: 17 - 21 is a key Scripture in this book that you're brand new, you're not sort of new, you're not that old self, you don't define yourself by that old man, that old nature, that old sin. You have a brand-new nature, you're a brand-new person in Christ, and you have, you get to share in His purpose and walk in His authority right now. And that's the clarion call in this book, is that everything that was lost in the garden has been found in Jesus. Will you take it up? Will you live out of the truth of all that's been found for you, and live with meaning and purpose and power in your life? Because that's where you find your true identity. It's all found in Jesus.---Listen to Lorie Hartshorn, an acclaimed international speaker, author, and Bible teacher being interviewed by Joanna la Fleur. By the 1990s, Jim was Assistant Director and later Executive Director of Shepherd's House, helping hundreds of pastors and churches with their toughest counseling cases.Jim was intimately involved in 1987 when Shepherd's House conducted a careful review of why some people with the same level of trauma and treatment recovered, but others did not. Are you concerned about the growing number of Canadian young adults who are leaving their faith behind? As parents, we hold a tremendous responsibility to ensure the transmission of faith to the next generation. How can we effectively disciple our children within the confines of our own homes? What steps can we take to pass on a strong foundation of faith to our children? These are not just ordinary questions; they are critical inquiries that demand careful and thoughtful answers. Parenting is a journey that brings both immense joy and significant challenges. However, our role as parents extends far beyond teaching life skills. We have the essential duty of educating our children, nurturing their social development, and raising them within the framework of faith. To shed light on this crucial topic, the Canadian Evangelical Family Faith Formation Study (CEFFFS) was initiated in 2019. This groundbreaking project, led by the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada in collaboration with 15 ministry partners, sought to understand how Canadian evangelical parents perceive their role as disciple-makers and how they actively shape their children's faith within the home. The study draws upon insights gained from interviews with parents, family ministry experts, and a comprehensive survey involving over 1,000 evangelical parents across Canada. In this episode, we are joined by two members of the research team who will help us delve into the study's key findings and their profound implications for Christian parents. Lindsay Callaway, a dedicated researcher at the Centre for Research on Church and Faith within the EFC, brings her expertise garnered from the Parenting Faith study, the Significant Church study, and her role as a co-host on the Faith Trends Podcast. Lindsay holds graduate degrees in systematic theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and bioethics from Trinity International University. She lives in Ottawa with her husband, a pastor, and their three children. Joining us as well is Rick Hiemstra, Director of the EFC's Centre for Research on Church and Faith. Rick's background encompasses pastoral experience in the Wesleyan tradition, along with teaching mathematics and computer science at the high school level. Renowned for his insights on Canadian church and cultural trends, he has contributed to several studies, including Parenting Faith, Significant Church, Renegotiating Faith, and various explorations into Bible engagement, local church missions, small evangelical churches, and faith formation during emerging adulthood. Rick holds a BMath from the University of Waterloo, a BEd from Ottawa University, and an MTS from Tyndale Seminary. Together, Lindsay Callaway and Rick Hiemstra will unpack the research findings and guide us toward a deeper understanding of how we, as parents, can fulfill our vital role as disciple-makers and raise a generation firmly rooted in faith. Art opens us to newness, to unexpected possibilities and the Gospel does the same...opens us to newness, the resurrection, the promise, a new heaven, new Earth. So, it opens us to newness and unexpected possibilities so I think there's this sort of parallel between the Gospel and the arts. One other thing I would want to say is that both the arts and the Gospel invite us to a posture of receptivity. What we like in our culture is control and management. Art says, listen, listen, look, receive and that posture of receptivity I think is essential for us if we're going to flourish as human beings.---Today's guest is John Franklin, interviewed by Rev. Michel Hendricks, author of 'The Other Half of Church,' is former pastor of spiritual formation at Flatirons Community Church in Lafayette, Colorado. Over 25 years of teaching and training others has taken him all over the world. With a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Colorado in Boulder, plus an MDiv degree from Denver Seminary, he has the credentials and resume to write and sell this book, and modern American Christians especially can be relied on to read it enthusiastically. His partner in that endeavor and others related, Dr. Jim Wilder has 30 years of experience, and is also a globetrotter. Growing up in South America, he's the author of nineteen books. One of them, a certain Living from the Heart Jesus Gave You, sold over 100,000 copies and is available in eleven languages. He's also lectured as a guest at Fuller Seminary, Biola, Talbot Seminary, Point Loma University, Montreat College, Tyndale Seminary, among others. But Wilder's extensive clinical counseling experience has led directly to his branding as "chief neurotheologian" at Life Model Works, a nonprofit self-described on the organization's website as residing "at the intersection of theology and brain science." And yesterday I finished reading Hendrick's and Wilder's collaborative work, 'The Other Half of Church.' Let me confess from the start that I did not love this book, for reasons which need to be explained carefully and at some length. For starters, there is a certain cost-benefit analysis which seems not to have been done carefully enough, in my view, where combining the latest in brain science with tried and true Christian theology is concerned. What, for instance, will happen to all our overhauled theology when the brain science is updated? Will we need to revise our theology again, if we were too hasty and too extensive in transforming the renewing of our minds along the lines laid out here? So also, the term 'neurotheologian' makes me uncomfortable, and reminds me of transhumanism. I imagine the influential churchmen of 2000 years coming back as cyborgs, or us looking back on them with some mixture of pity and contempt because we suppose our ability to describe how and where the electrical signals travel in our heads has improved the Bible. Maybe this is excessively critical. If so, that's not my goal. But then we can see in the last few centuries since the Enlightenment too much of what goes wrong when we get carried away with our pursuit of the physical sciences, then let them shape and dictate our study of God and His Word. We do not have to confine ourselves to hypotheticals here, but we have many cautionary examples in recent enough memory. There are odd choices made in 'The Other Half of Church.' For instances, why coin a new term like 'neurotheologian' but use the Greek word 'hesed' throughout here? It's defined early on, yes. But by the end of the book, it's been used so often and in such a way that it feels downright gimmicky. But then the whole work feels a bit gimmicky, if I'm honest. The latest brain science seems put forward in a similar way to how Richard Dawkins used to argue against the existence of God by use of lengthy non-sequiturs about how much we know in the fields of microbiology and astrophysics. This feels like Christians trying to prove that we can do science too, therefore you should believe in Christ and read the Bible and love your neighbor accordingly. This feels backwards and foreign, I think, because neuroscience should get its legitimacy from our Christian faith based on God's Word, and not the other way around. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support
After 35 years as the director of Youth for Christ (YfC) Sri Lanka, Ajith Fernando stepped back to become Teaching Director, giving him the space to write and teach that he'd struggled to find previously. Brought up in a Christian home which highly prized the exposition of the scriptures, it was unsurprising that he would find a model and mentor in the writing of John Stott. However, he has followed his lead in many different ways ever since, including being instrumental in committing YfC Sri Lanka to serving the country's poor with various relief and discipleship programmes. He learned the importance of the simple lifestyle from Uncle John and with his wife Nelun, two adult children and four grandchildren, has made a profound contribution to the mission of the global church. A graduate of Asbury and Fuller seminaries, he has been awarded honorary doctorates by Asbury, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Gordon-Conwell seminary, and Tyndale Seminary in Canada. Tara Owens is the founder and executive director of Anam Cara Ministries, where she has been accompanying others in their journeys with God for 15 years as a certified spiritual director and supervisor. Tara holds a Masters of Theological Studies in Spiritual Formation, combined with a certificate in Death, Dying & Grieving, from Tyndale Seminary, and the Advanced Certificate in Supervision from the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education at Fordham University. Tara also teaches rabbinic Scripture study groups, educates spiritual directors, teaches in several spiritual direction programs across the U.S., and teaches a variety of spiritual formation courses. Tara was the Senior Editor of Conversations Journal for 7 years and has authored two books, Embracing the Body: Finding God in Our Flesh & Bone (IVP, 2015), and At Play In God's Creation: A Contemplative Coloring Book (Franciscan Media, 2016).In my conversation with Tara, we talk about soul friendship; what it is, how it impacts the world, why Tara refers to it as “living art,” and how soul friendship plays a crucial role in resisting culture. We also talk at length about Tara's book, Embracing the Body. Tara helps us move away from cultural trends of objectifying or criticizing our bodies, to instead befriend our bodies and see them as good. She reminds us that God speaks through our bodies, so often reminding us of His care and presence in the midst of our own embodiment.

Spiritual warfare. William Gurnall says that all Christians are in the battle whether they realize it or not, and that the war is so serious that it makes the cruelest battle between human armies seem like child's play. -But what is spiritual warfare, anyway? -Why has it been neglected by some branches of Christianity in more recent times? -Who is our enemy? -Isn't the New Testament just “out of date” on some of this stuff? -Does “possession” still happen? -How should we think about the “armour of God” in Ephesians 6? -How do we win the battle? This episode of The Word at Westminster is a talk Pastor Ruttan had with Jon Thompson. And yes, we talk about all those questions. Jon's work and experience in this area isn't just academic. Episode 63 | Jon Thompson joins Jason this week for a unique conversation about calling in pastoral ministry. Based on a talk from a 2018 church leaders gathering, Jon shares what he believes is the foundation for long term, effective church leadership. Jon's own journey led him to question what biblical calling looked like. Experiencing a sense of supernatural leading and divine intervention in his twenties, he came to believe pastors without that “moment” might not be called. However, after stepping back to evaluate the scriptures, he came to see four biblical models for calling that he called: 1) “I have no choice”, 2) gift-based, 3) family-based, and 4) community affirmed. Based on biblical figures, Jon shares with Jason how most pastors experience one or a combination of these before or in their early years of ministry. Jason presses Jon on common objections or hesitations people might raise from seeing the idea of calling misused in church circles historically. About | Jon Thompson serves as the Senior Pastor at Sanctus Church (formerly C4 Church), just outside of Toronto, Canada. He has been on staff for more than 20 years. Sanctus is a regional church with a community of over 3,000 people that gather in multiple locations in the Greater Toronto area. In all the many conversations we've been having about what the future holds for the post-Covid church, there's been one common idea that we keep hearing: a sense that God is at work doing something new in His church through Covid and a deep desire to participate with Him in whatever that is. But how do we know what it is that He's asking us to participate in? In this episode, Jessica Powell sat down with Jon Thompson, Senior Pastor of Sanctus Church and author of the books Convergence and Deliverance to talk about the importance of asking God if He has something specific for us to do before we jump into making our plans and what that actually looks like in practice for us as church leaders who are trying to discern what to do in a post pandemic world. So as part of our exploration and discussion today on Where are all the Christian Men and What do we do about it; we have a PANEL OF MEN who will be sharing their thoughts with us: Bruxy Cavey, Lead Pastor of The Meeting House, Rev. Chris, The 'Viral Vicar' on YouTube and Dr. Narry Santos, Associate Professor at Tyndale Seminary. An Important conversation for ALL OF US – single or married – and how we can support and love one another.

How should we understand the appearances of the king in Book V of the Hebrew Psalter? Ever since Gerald H. Wilson’s landmark work, The Editing of the Hebrew Psalter (1985), some have interpreted the failure of the Davidic covenant in Psalm 89 as signaling its replacement by a hope in the direct intervention of the LORD—that is, without any further role for a Davidic king. Others, however, insist that Book V marks the return of the king, pointing to a renewed hope in the Davidic covenant. Join us as we speak Ian J. Vaillancourt about his recent monograph, The Multifaceted Saviour of Psalms 110 and 118: A Canonical Exegesis (Sheffield Phoenix Press, 2019), in which he seeks to demonstrate that Book V focuses Israel’s expectation on an eschatological figure of salvation who encompasses many hoped-for figures across the Old Testament in one person. Dr. Ian J. Vaillancourt serves as Associate Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Heritage Theological Seminary. He earned a B.Th. from Tyndale College, an M.T.S. from Tyndale Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto. He is also an ordained pastor in the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists in Canada and served in senior/teaching pastoral roles for 14 years. He has published articles and book reviews in several academic journals, including The Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, Westminster Theological Journal, Journal for the Evangelical Study of the Old Testament, and The Scottish Bulletin of Evangelical Theology. Ian is married to Natalie and they have two children: Caleb and Emily. We are featuring his first monograph, on the vision of the Messiah from Psalms 110 and 118. Michael Morales is Professor of Biblical Studies at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and the author of The Tabernacle Pre-Figured: Cosmic Mountain Ideology in Genesis and Exodus(Peeters, 2012), and Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord?: A Biblical Theology of Leviticus (IVP Academic, 2015). Transcribed highlights of the show can be found in our episode summaries. As is now well known, millions of evangelical Christians supported Donald Trump and helped lead him to victory on November 8, 2016 in his stunning upset over Hillary Clinton. Besides Franklin Graham and Jerry Falwell, Jr., among the better known evangelicals who have support Mr. Trump are James Robison, host of the TV program Life Today, David Jeremiah, senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, a Southern Baptist megachurch in El Cajon, California, Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist, Dallas, Texas, and Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist in Prestonwood, Texas. Until recently, there hasn’t been as much focus on Trump’s more charismatic and prosperity gospel supporters. In fact, many in these circles were convinced to vote for Trump in 2016 because prophets in the movements believed Trump was destined by God to become president as early as 2015. Two lesser-known charismatics who have been on Trump’s Evangelical council are Jentezen Franklin, senior pastor, Free Chapel Worship Center, Gainesville, Georgia, and Robert Morris, pastor of Gateway Church, a multi-site megachurch of some 36,000 attenders based in Southlake, Texas, near Fort Worth. Two prominent supporters, both associated strongly with the prosperity gospel, are Kenneth Copeland and Paula White, both of whom have also been a part of the President’s council. White has had a particularly close pastoral relationship with President Trump, starting years before he took office. And recently, she’s been appointed by Trump to the Office of Public Liaison, which is responsible for communicating and interacting with various interest groups. On this edition of Quick to Listen, we want to delve more deeply into Trump’s charismatic and properity gospel supporters, and especially Paula White, to better understand the social and political passions and concerns of this religious movement. Our guest is James A. Beverley, research professor of Christian thought and ethics at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto, Canada. He is also Associate Director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion in Texas. He has been a contributor Christianity Today, Faith Today, and Charisma magazines. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including Nelson’s Illustrated Guide to Religion and Religions A to Z, and most recently, Donald Trump, God, and Christian Prophecy: A Guide to the Prophets and Prophecies in the Charismatic-Pentecostal World concerning the 45th President. SHOW NOTES Today we are talking about friendship. Not just any kind of friendship, but spiritual, or soul friendship. What is a soul friend (in Gaelic known as Anam Cara)? And how does it tie in to having a spiritual director? Listen in on this conversation with Kaylene and Tara Owens, founder of Anam Cara Ministry, and learn! RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST Today’s Guest - Tara Owens Tara was born in Montreal to British parents who moved to Canada for a better life for their growing family. Canadian by birth and British by blood, she has lived all over the US, and now lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Tara discerned the call to spiritual direction while completing a Master of Theological Studies in Spiritual Formation at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto. She was captured by the incredible privilege it is to companion someone as they discern the voice of the Loving Creator in their lives. It’s Holy Week and we’re coming up on my favorite day in the Christian calendar: Maundy Thursday. Although it’s not a popular day for evangelical services, it’s without a doubt the most transformational space - or liminal space - that I’ve encountered in a Church service. That particular service was held at the International Anglican Church in Colorado Springs. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve attended many incredible revival services over the years, but the IAC Maundy Thursday service is kind of the opposite of revival, but in the best sort of way. In this episode, Tara Owens and Jay Greener help me tell this Maundy Thursday story. We talk about the institution of the Lord’s Supper, the discomfort of footwashing and how the disorientation of betrayal (along with pastoral defrocking and abandonment) prepares our hearts for Easter. Rev. Canon Jay Greener serves as the Rector at Church of the Redeemer In Chicago. Before that he served in various ministry roles within churches and Christian organizations around the country. Jay is also a Canon, or Senior Priest, in the Shyira Diocese of the Anglican Church of Rwanda. Formerly a broadcaster, Jay is particularly interested in the many ways that we hear God, and communicate about God. He is a graduate of Wheaton College, Yale Divinity School, and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Worship and the Arts. Tara Owens opens up our imagination for Maundy Thursday through her own story, which she writes about in her book Embracing the Body: Finding God in Our Flesh and Bone. Tara is a writer, Spiritual Director and Founder of Anam Cara Ministries. She holds a TM in Spiritual Formation from Tyndale Seminary.
